Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne is joined by Jacqui Bryan to unpack an often-overlooked saboteur of healthy eating: store-bought salad dressings. While many focus on "eating the rainbow" and maximizing their intake of vibrant vegetables, Jacqui points out how hidden additives, sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives in commercial dressings can undermine even the most nutritious meal—particularly for those seeking a food-first approach to cancer recovery and vitality. Together, they explore the impact of these “gunky” ingredients, the importance of reading food labels, and the empowering choice to craft simple, health-enhancing dressings at home, complete with practical recipes and tips. Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, whole health educator, health coach, and registered nurse. Renowned for her expertise in functional medicine and personalized wellness, Jacqui brings a depth of experience helping clients make informed, food-based choices. As a cancer survivor herself, she advocates passionately for using nutrition as a tool for healing, resilience, and long-term health. “We focus so much on eating the rainbow, eating the healthy foods, that we really need to pay attention to what we are actually putting on the food. Because if we don't, we are potentially hurting our health.” ~Jacqui Bryan Today on Beating Cancer Daily:· Store-bought salad dressings often contain hidden sugars, sodium, unhealthy fats, preservatives, and even additives like titanium dioxide and artificial dyes, which can undermine the health benefits of salads.· Creamy dressings are not always healthier than oily ones; both may contain problematic ingredients depending on preparation.· Being an "informed consumer" means looking past marketing terms like "natural" and checking ingredient lists for unrecognizable or non-food items.· Organic dressings typically avoid synthetic additives and dyes but may still include sugar; always read the full label.· Homemade dressings provide control over ingredients—healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, tahini, and flavor boosters like citrus, herbs, and spices can make salad both delicious and nutrient-rich.· Sodium content in dressings can be surprisingly high; those sensitive to salt or with high blood pressure should pay particular attention.· Simple homemade dressings, such as olive oil with lemon or a basic vinaigrette, are easy to make and store in glass containers. As both a Stage IV cancer survivor and a nutrition expert, Jacqui shares how licorice root can support gut health, immunity, and even skin conditions, while also cautioning against its use for certain individuals, especially those with hormone-sensitive cancers or heart conditions. This week we're dropping into your feed to share another podcast we love called Everything Happens.Duke Professor Kate Bowler is an expert in the stories we tell about success and failure, suffering and happiness. She had Stage IV cancer. Then she didn’t. And since then, all she wants to do is talk to funny and wise people about living with the knowledge that everything happens. In this conversation, she sits down with Amanda Doyle to talk about what happens when helping becomes a way to stay in control, when strength hides tenderness, and when receiving love might be the bravest thing we do. She shares her experience of parenting a neurodivergent child, walking through a breast cancer diagnosis, and learning to see herself as worthy of the care she so freely gives to others. This episode is about the ache of being the strong one—and the grace of letting that go, just a little. Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne welcomes certified nutrition specialist and whole health educator Jacqui Bryan to demystify the buzz around hemp—whether it's health food or just hype, and what cancer patients need to know before adding it to their diets. Saranne shares her own initial confusion about hemp, from wondering why anyone would eat or smoke something used to make rope, to sprinkling hemp seeds on her daily meals. Together, they break down the differences between hemp and marijuana, why some athletes avoid hemp due to anti-doping rules, and the powerful health benefits of hemp seeds, including protein, essential fatty acids, minerals, and fiber. This candid conversation explores practical ways to build hemp into your routine, addresses safety and quality concerns for cancer patients, and busts common myths about the plant. Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, functional medicine expert, whole health educator, certified health coach, and registered nurse. Drawing on her deep experience guiding clients through cancer and wellness journeys, Jacqui brings clarity to confusing nutrition trends and empowers listeners with actionable, science-backed guidance. Her expertise in functional medicine and patient education makes her a trusted resource for anyone navigating cancer care, survivorship, or prevention. "Hemp seeds are very high in fiber...fiber is critical for everybody, especially people that are in treatment, because fiber escorts toxins out of your body." ~ Jacqui Bryan Today on Beating Cancer Daily:· Hemp is not the same as marijuana; hemp seeds contain only minimal THC and do not produce a high.· Hemp seeds are a rich source of plant-based protein, particularly beneficial for vegans and individuals following a plant-based diet.· They provide essential fatty acids that support heart health, brain health, and reduce inflammation, all crucial for cancer prevention and survivorship.· Hemp seeds are rich in micronutrients, including magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamin E—nutrients that can be depleted during cancer treatment.· The high fiber content in hemp seeds helps with digestion, supports detoxification, and promotes healthy bowel movements, which is especially important for those undergoing chemotherapy.· Hemp seeds support weight management and satiety, helping to reduce overeating and nervous eating, which is common during cancer stress.· Incorporating hemp into everyday meals is simple—sprinkle it on salads, soups, smoothies, or use products like hemp hearts, hemp butter, and hemp milk.· People on blood thinners should consult healthcare providers before increasing hemp consumption, as hemp can act as a natural blood thinner. · Resources Mentioned: Tame the Flame 8 Day Challenge (Jacqui Bryan's clean eating program): jacquibryan.com Label Detective Episode (cited as a foundational nutrition resource) Guest Contact Information: Website: jacquibryan.com Ranked the Top 5 Best Cancer Podcasts by CancerCare News in 2024 & 2025, and #1 Rated Cancer Survivor Podcast by FeedSpot in 2024 Beating Cancer Daily is listened to in over 130 countries on 7 continents and has over 365 original daily episodes hosted by Stage IV survivor Saranne Rothberg! The podcast focuses on the critical need to address the root causes of health and environmental crises, emphasizing that many diseases, including cancer, are largely influenced by environmental factors and capitalism's exploitative nature. Hamza Hamouchene talks about his reasons for leaving a career in cancer research, highlighting the disillusionment he faced when he realized that the focus was on profit rather than genuine health solutions. Hamza and Steve make a case against a capitalist system that not only externalizes costs related to health and the environment but also perpetuates inequities, particularly affecting marginalized communities. They delve into interconnected struggles from climate justice to the fight against imperialism, and stress the importance of collective action and the need for a revolutionary vision that prioritizes social and economic justice. Ultimately, the episode serves as a call to action for listeners to engage in grassroots movements and challenge the status quo, advocating for an ecosocialist future where health and environmental care are public goods rather than commodities.Hamza Hamouchene is a London-based Algerian researcher-activist, commentator and a founding member of Algeria Solidarity Campaign (ASC), and Environmental Justice North Africa (EJNA). He previously worked for War on Want, Global Justice Now and Platform London on issues of extractivism, resources, land and food sovereignty as well as climate, environmental, and trade justice.
