Together, they break down what makes ALA so powerful for anyone looking to support their health, especially those impacted by cancer, diabetes, or premature aging. Saranne and Jacqui explore the differences between alpha-lipoic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, discuss how ALA is synthesized in the body, and highlight the importance of food-based sources such as broccoli, spinach, potatoes, and tomatoes. The episode also features crucial insights into when supplementation may or may not be appropriate, why food is usually the best source, and how community support can make the cancer journey more connected and hopeful. Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, whole health educator, health coach, and registered nurse. And then you have these antioxidants and they're like your superheroes...they burst onto the scene with an electron and that neutralizes the free radical." ~Saranne Today on Beating Cancer Daily:·     Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant naturally synthesized in the human body and also available from foods such as broccoli, spinach, potatoes, and tomatoes·     ALA supports nerve health and can help with neuropathy, especially in people with diabetes or as a side effect of cancer treatment·     ALA is both water and fat-soluble, giving it versatility to work in multiple cell environments·     Food sources are preferred over supplements due to bioavailability and lower risk of side effects·     Supplements should be used with caution, especially for those undergoing active chemotherapy, or with certain medical conditions like thyroid disorders or diabetes·     Ultra-processed foods contribute to inflammation and increased risk of diseases like cancer, emphasizing the need for a whole-foods-based diet·     ALA can regenerate other important antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione, offering even broader cellular protection·     Support, connection, and science-based guidance are critical tools for cancer survivors and caregivers in making daily empowered health choices Resources Mentioned:Beating Cancer Daily Episodes – "Antioxidant Episode", "Eye Health Episode", "Label Detective Episode" 2025 People's Choice Podcast Awards Best Health Series FinalistRanked the Top 5 Best Cancer Podcasts by CancerCare News in 2024 & 2025,and #1 Rated Cancer Survivor Podcast by FeedSpot in 2024 to 2025. Beating Cancer Daily is listened to in 140 countries across 7 continents and features over 400 original daily episodes hosted by Stage IV survivor Saranne Rothberg. Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne welcomes Jacqui Bryan to explore the increasingly relevant concept of being "grain curious" for those navigating cancer recovery or simply looking to boost immune health through nutrition. Saranne, a Stage IV cancer survivor, shares her personal experiences with gluten sensitivity and discusses the confusion surrounding gluten-free eating, celiac disease, and cross-contamination. Together, she and Jacqui emphasize the importance of understanding different types of grains, how gluten impacts health, and how making educated choices can support the body's healing process, especially when bloating, brain fog, and digestive distress are frequent concerns.Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, whole health educator, health coach, and registered nurse. Her expertise as a functional medicine professional empowers listeners with practical advice on reading ingredient labels, selecting nutrient-rich whole foods, and creatively incorporating naturally gluten-free grains into daily meals. Jacqui's holistic approach makes her a go-to guide for patients and survivors seeking sustainable strategies for immune-healthy eating."Fiber is the thing that is going to escort the toxins out of your body. It's going to get rid of the extra estrogen, help the cholesterol get out of your body." – Jacqui BryanToday on Beating Cancer Daily:·      Grain curiosity is an increasingly common approach for those experiencing symptoms from gluten, even if they don't have celiac disease. ·      Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley that can cause issues ranging from brain fog and fatigue to digestive distress. ·      Many packaged gluten-free foods are highly processed and may not be ideal for supporting overall health and cancer recovery. ·      Label detective skills are essential; gluten can hide in unexpected places, from lipstick and sunscreen to salad dressings and deli meats. ·      Naturally gluten-free grains such as sorghum, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, oats (if certified gluten-free), rice, and teff offer nutritious alternatives to wheat. ·      Fiber from whole grains helps the body flush out toxins, support hormonal balance, and manage cholesterol. ·      Cross-contamination is a concern for oats and rice; those with celiac disease or severe intolerance must read labels carefully. ·      Trying new whole grains is encouraged for variety and nutrition, and Saranne and Jacqui invite listeners to share their kitchen adventures for community support.2025 People's Choice Podcast Awards Best Health Series FinalistRanked the Top 5 Best Cancer Podcasts by CancerCare News in 2024 & 2025,and #1 Rated Cancer Survivor Podcast by FeedSpot in 2024 to 2025. Beating Cancer Daily is listened to in 140 countries across 7 continents and features over 400 original daily episodes hosted by Stage IV survivor Saranne Rothberg. To learn more about Host Saranne Rothberg and The ComedyCures Foundation:https://www.comedycures.org/ To write to Saranne or a guest:https://www.comedycures.org/contact-8 To record a message to Saranne or a guest:https://www.speakpipe.com/BCD_Comments_SuggestionsTo sign up for the free Health Builder Series live on Zoom with Saranne and Jacqui, go to The ComedyCures Foundation's homepage:https://www.comedycures.org/Please support the creation of more original episodes of Beating Cancer Daily and other free ComedyCures Foundation programs with a tax-deductible contribution:http://bit.ly/ComedyCuresDonate THANK YOU! "I think snacking gets a bad rap, and I'm here to clear the air and really talk about why I think healthy snacking is important." ~Jacqui Bryan Today on Beating Cancer Daily:·     Snacking can be healthy, especially when focusing on snacks that combine protein, fat, and fiber. ·     Balanced snacks stabilize blood sugar, curb cravings, and prevent energy crashes throughout the day. ·     Unprocessed, pronounceable ingredients are crucial; read labels to avoid chemicals and added sugars. ·     Creative snack options include trail mix with dark chocolate, freeze-dried fruit, nut butters, and veggie sticks dipped in hummus. ·     Nut butters, seeds, and whole-grain crackers are rich, satisfying alternatives to sugary treats. ·     Dessert-style snacks, such as yogurt with fruit or avocado brownies, can satisfy sweet cravings without unhealthy additives. ·     Timing matters.  Allowing a buffer between the last snack and bedtime may improve digestion and sleep. ·     Post-workout snacks that replenish glycogen with balanced nutrients are especially beneficial for recovery. 2025 People's Choice Podcast Awards Best Health Series FinalistRanked the Top 5 Best Cancer Podcasts by CancerCare News in 2024 & 2025,and #1 Rated Cancer Survivor Podcast by FeedSpot in 2024 to 2025. Beating Cancer Daily is listened to in 140 countries across 7 continents and features over 400 original daily episodes hosted by Stage IV survivor Saranne Rothberg. Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne is joined by nutrition and wellness pro Jacqui Bryan for a lively (and often hilarious) chat about the real deal with chia seeds. After reminiscing about those classic 1970s Chia Pet commercials, they answer the burning question: are chia pets and chia seeds in your pudding the same thing, and can you actually eat them? (Short answer: don't eat your Chia Pet!) Jacqui breaks down why chia seeds have become so trendy, their ancient superfood roots, and how they can boost your health, especially if you're living with or recovering from cancer.Jacqui Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge as a certified nutrition specialist, health coach, RN, and functional medicine expert. Her passion is helping people feel their best using real, tasty foods and practical tips that actually fit real life. Jacqui's advice isn't just about nutrition science; she and Saranne always make it approachable and fun.“It has a lot of staying power because chia seeds have protein, fat and fiber in them, which helps with blood sugar balance.” ~Jacqui BryanToday on Beating Cancer Daily:·     Chia seeds should not be eaten from Chia Pets, as those seeds are chemically treated and not intended for consumption. ·     Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants like quercetin and chlorogenic acid, promoting heart and liver health. ·     Chia seeds contain anti-cancer properties that make them valuable in a cancer-fighting diet. ·     They are an excellent source of soluble fiber, aiding detoxification and supporting weight management. ·     Chia seeds are rich in plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, beneficial for gut health, and essential for the body. ·     These tiny seeds support blood sugar regulation and provide lasting energy due to their protein, fat, and fiber content. ·     Chia pudding is an easy, adaptable way to incorporate chia seeds into the diet; using the correct proportions and giving the mixture enough time to set overnight prevents clumping and unpleasant textures. ·     Toppings like berries, nuts, coconut flakes, and nut butters can enhance both the nutrition and enjoyment of chia pudding.Guest Contact Information: Website: https://jacquibryan.com  2025 People's Choice Podcast Awards Best Health Series FinalistRanked the Top 5 Best Cancer Podcasts by CancerCare News in 2024 & 2025,and #1 Rated Cancer Survivor Podcast by FeedSpot in 2024 to 2025. Beating Cancer Daily is listened to in 140 countries across 7 continents and features over 400 original daily episodes hosted by Stage IV survivor Saranne Rothberg. Are you living your best life now? Not always? This is a podcast for you. Duke Professor Kate Bowler is an expert in the stories we tell about success and failure, suffering and happiness. She had Stage IV cancer. Then she didn’t. And since then, all she wants to do is talk to funny and wise people about how to live with the knowledge that, well, everything happens. The pandemic introduced many to living with uncertainty. But for some, uncertainty has always been their norm. In this episode, Kate speak to actress Nikki Deloach, who has starred in several Hallmark Christmas movies, but her life hasn’t matched the happily-ever-after plot-lines of her characters. Nikki’s dad was diagnosed with an aggressive form of dementia and her son was diagnosed with congenital heart defects in utero… all in the same week. In this conversation, Kate and Nikki discuss how to live with constant uncertainty, how to stay open to both the terror and the beauty of living close to the edge, and how to make Christmas meaningful when hope is hard to come by.
