What did you do during the COVID-19 social distancing era? Some of us learned to make sourdough, some of us perfected a viral whipped coffee, plenty of us did a whole lot of nothing- but this NYC subculture was busy taking notes.Anna Bounds, a Professor of Sociology at Queens College, has felt called to teach, write, and tell stories for a long time. She's particularly passionate about urban policies that make cities better, stronger and more vibrant. As a sociologist–but also as a New Yorker–she began attending meetings of NYC's "prepper" community: a group of people dedicated to preparing for disasters the government may not be equipped to help with, whether it's a pandemic, terrorist attack or natural disaster.Anna clarifies: they aren't preparing for the end of the world- just whatever kind of day tomorrow might be. She's spent years (including before the pandemic) researching these groups while also learning countless skills for emergency preparation and response."All sorts of interesting people [were] coming together to figure out how to help each other in crisis- and it paid off."So forget viral food trends! This episode pairs best with assembling your emergency kit (and yes, Anna has suggestions for it).Anna's Haiku* ("A Love Letter to the City"):Smoke clings to the skyHands meet through sirens and headlinesLove that doesn't flinch(*With special thanks to Anna's 7th grade teacher)Links:Anna's book, Urban Preppers and the Pandemic in New York City: Class, Resilience, and Sheltering in Place: https://www.annamariabounds.org/urban-preppersAnna's first book, Bracing for the Apocalypse: An Ethnographic Study of New York City's Urban Prepper Subculture: https://www.annamariabounds.org/book/apocalypse

In this chilling episode Fred from Alaska, who brings two haunting accounts from the frozen north—true stories of isolation, terror, and survival in one of the world's most unforgiving landscapes. The first story follows Bernie, a woman living alone on a remote Alaskan homestead after the tragic loss of her husband. What begins as unsettling noises and strange disturbances around her cabin soon escalates into a harrowing confrontation with hairy, caveman-like beings that emerge from the forest.Alone and armed only with her courage, Bernie faces the unthinkable as she fights to survive against something not entirely human—and not entirely animal. Fred also shares a second account from Joseph, set in 1987 in Bristol Bay, where a dense fog hides something terrifying in the mist. The encounter that follows defies explanation and adds another chapter to Alaska's long history of cryptid encounters and wilderness mysteries. These are stories of fear, endurance, and the strange, untamed forces that still roam the edges of civilization.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Will artificial intelligence robots have subjective experience? What are the ethical and safety implications of such entities? Which quantum physics theory can accommodate consciousness? In this episode we have the extraordinary possibility of subjective experience and feelings in artificial intelligence robotic systems to think about. So we look at experiments to try and prove if it's even possible; the quantum building blocks from which both living and artificial systems are made up; the ethical and safety implications of advanced intelligence instantiated in robots, and we get into the controversial search for a quantum physics theory that can accommodate consciousness.Fortunately, my guest today is not only one of the first pioneering scientists to really devote themselves to the creation of sentient human-similar robot minds and bodies, but is also an experimental physicist working with quantum computing systems. She is of course the quantum engineer, consciousness researcher and AI computer scientist Suzanne Gildert. She has written over 80 scientific papers, founded several successful AI companies and has dozens of US patents for her inventions. THIS ISN'T ABOUT VIEWS. IT'S ABOUT SURVIVAL. Let's get one thing straight: the videos we're producing on SNAP & EBT benefits and the pitfalls of abusing the system — we're paying for them out of our own pockets. No grants. No sponsors. Just us. Big props to all the community members that support Feed Halifax, Hitachi Energy South Boston and Ryland Clark for there phenomenal efforts and successes providing community support in so many ways...the food pantries need all the support they can get. Ask them how you can help!Because kids can't eat politics. And parents can't swipe “good intentions” at the grocery store. We are launching a 4-part video series on how the government shutdown is putting everyday families at risk — and we didn't wait for permission. Why? Because:Mothers are praying their balance doesn't hit $0 at checkoutChildren shouldn't go to bed hungry because “Washington can't figure it out”And the people running the food pantries, stocking the shelves, and donating their time and energy — they're exhausted. We're stepping in because this is OUR community. And we refuse to watch it crumble. If you need food, there ARE resources. We've got the list. We've got the links. We've done the work. Share this.Tag somebody who needs it.And remember: one voice can spark change, but WE need a chorus.— Shawn A. BarksdaleTen Minutes of Truth Podcast

Robert Christophor Coppes is a scientist and retired financier, has studied NDEs for decades and has lectured on this topic in the US and Europe. His latest book on NDEs is called “Impressions of Near-Death Experiences” and it in fact is a compilation of hundreds of quotes from experiencers. He considers them the best tutors in life. Previous books on NDEs are “Essence of Religions” and “Messages from the Light”. He never had the intention to write books, but the death of his brother changed that. He strongly felt that he had to write this extraordinary story in a specific way. He had a flash of inspiration during the long ride back home after the funeral. While driving, the structure came to him: the chapters, the contents, the dialogues, the prologue, and the epilogue. The book that resulted was translated in English: “Michael's Cloak”. He also wrote a book based on a war diary of his uncle who became an American citizen: “A teenage boy in war torn Holland”.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Part 1- Best-selling author Tom Clavin talks about his latest book, "Running Deep: Bravery, Survival, and the True Story of the Deadliest Submarine in World War II." The book describes the crucial role played by American submarines in the Pacific Theater during World War Two (especially given the disaster suffered by the U.S. at Pearl Harbor and the way in which our naval forces were so badly compromised.) The book focuses particularly on the U.S.S. Tang, and its commander, Captain Richard Hetheringrton O'Kane- which sank more Japanese vessels and rescued more downed aviators than any other American submarine. Part 2- From 2010, Eric Blehm tells a story of heroism from the War in Afghanistan in his book "The Only Thing Worth Fighting For: How Eleven Green Berets Fought for a New Afghanistan."

Damon, Jordan and Tony are curious – Does hiding sex make us safer or is it more dangerous? Many people hide sexual encounters in order to control and manage public opinion, or just because they're a private lady. But does that secrecy open us up to more trauma? In this especially dynamic episode, the hosts dive into this topic with a pastor and LGBTQ ally, Kristian A Smith. They get into the up and down sides of being private about sex and Kristian opens up about his thoughts on why the church should heal its relationship to sex and sexuality. Take the most frightening death you can imagine, now double it. Then double it again. And then add fire. This is our Halloween episode, and by the time we're done, your favourite horror movie will have all the impact of a baby food commercial. I'm not saying you'll never sleep again, but I'm not not saying it. I am apologizing in advance, and I remind you that a Doomsday barf bag is only an email away. Back when we did the Sknyliv Airshow Disaster episode, I had grave concerns about her aggressively violent and gory it was because. If you'll remember, during the air show, a Ukrainian fighter jet the size of a medium sized store impacted the ground, skidding through a run of barbed wire, which then hooked on the fuselage and was dragged and raked across a crowd. In retrospect, that was quaint compared to the totality of horror visited upon the people of today's story. I remind you, the point of this show is not simply to disgust and horrify people. It's to educate and make them safer. It just happens that the best way to do so is to occasionally horrify, and this episode covers that in spades. This was one of the first stories I wrote, but I shelved it because I thought it would drive people away with how gratuitously awful it was. Well, we're all here toady and filtering it through the lens of a Halloween episode, you'll finally hear it today. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channels:Apple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for more:Facebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcast TikTok : https://www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsdayBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/doomsday-history-s-most-dangerous-podcast--4866335/support.

This week on Grifty, we are heading north… way north. where climate change, government chaos, and corporate greed have collided at once. Alaska is in free fall. A typhoon has slammed the western coast, wiping out villages and food stores that took generations to build. The federal government is shut down, freezing aid and cutting off SNAP benefits for tens of thousands. While people are trying to keep their families fed, the Trump administration is approving new oil leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is not about the weather. It is about what happens when a government built on extraction leaves its people to fend for themselves. It is about sovereignty, survival, and the politics of pretending the climate crisis is still up for debate. We are joined by Dr. Brian Heaslet, a lifelong Alaskan who knows what it takes to keep food and supplies moving across the most isolated parts of the state. Also joining is our own Sierra Montoya, bringing her sharp Alaskan insight and humor to unpack what life in the Last Frontier really looks like when disaster meets politics.

It should have been a quick flight, just a few hours across the Andes Mountains from Uruguay to Chile. Onboard were members of a rugby team, and many of their friends, and family. Spirits were high, the mood light. But as they crossed into the mountains cloud cover dropped visibility to almost nothing. What would happen next would end or define the lives of the 45 people on board.Victims Gastón CostemalleAlexis HouniéGuido MagriDaniel ShawCarlos ValetaDr. Francisco Nicola, Team physicianEsther Horta Pérez de NicolaEugenia Dolgay Diedug de ParradoFernándo VázquezFrancisco AbalFelipe MaquirriainJulio Martínez-LamasGraciela Augusto Gumila de MarianiSusana ParradoDaniel MasponsJuan Carlos MenéndezLiliana Navarro Petraglia de MetholGustavo NicolichMarcelo Pérez, Captain of rugby teamEnrique PlateroDiego StormArturo NogueiraRafael EchavarrenNuma TurcattiSurvivors José Pedro AlgortaRoberto CanessaAlfredo DelgadoDaniel FernándezRoberto FrancoisRoy HarleyJosé Luis InciarteÁlvaro ManginoJavier MetholCarlos Páez RodríguezFernando ParradoRamón SabellaAdolfo "Fito" StrauchEduardo StrauchAntonio "Tintin" VizintínGustavo ZerbinoSources Rare Historical Photos Britannica Wikipedia BBC All Thats Interesting Mental Floss ABC News Find a GraveSupport us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month, with benefits starting at the $3 tier!Follow us on Instagram at offthetrailspodcastFollow us on Facebook at Off the Trails PodcastIf you have your own outdoor misadventure (or adventure) story that you'd like us to include in a listener episode, send it to us at offthetrailspodcast@gmail.com Please take a moment to rate and review our show, and a big thanks if you already have!**We do our own research and try our best to cross-reference reliable sources to present the most accurate information we can. The Falklands and the Wreck Eric J. Dolan Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World The American sealers sought valuable fur seals and elephant seal blubber in the Falkland Islands, a harsh, virtually uninhabited region characterized by constant high winds averaging 18 mph and cold temperatures averaging 49°F in summer. The treeless landscape features tusk grass, which grows up to nine feet tall and yields peat useful for making fires. While the Nanina hunted seals, the Australian transport ship Isabella wrecked on Eagle Island due to Captain George Hickton's ineptitude and drinking. The 54 survivors, including Marines and pardoned convicts, made it ashore, though many were inebriated and convinced they would perish in this desolate location. 1849 FALKLANDS
