Hi everyone, and welcome to a special bonus episode of Linking Our Libraries! We are sharing some information about the free training program available to library staffers: 23 Things Media Landscapes. We are the Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange. Our members are libraries of all sorts: public, schools, academics, special libraries, archives, and history centers. We talk about a lot of different skills that people will need when they work in libraries. Providing education and training is an important part of our mission. And of course, we are not alone in that mission! Today we have two Guest Hosts who are both actively involved in creating and providing a very interesting, very useful training program in Minnesota: Media Landscapes: 23 Things. Thank you to Ann Walker Smalley, our fellow multitype system director from the Metronet system, and to Linda Mork from Minitex for joining us today! You can read all of our show notes right here!

Joining us this week is Valerie Horton, director of Minitex! Check out our full show notes page here! Vision can mean different things to different people. But nearly every study of leadership skills and competencies agree that this is one of the most important leaders can develop. For our purposes, vision means looking at the future and see where the library can go; articulating directions to others. Of course, if we all had crystal balls and perfect views of the future, this would be so easy! “Let’s do this! Let’s try that! Oops! Money will be short next year; let’s start on some grants now!” Sadly, few of us will have those skills. We have never yet met a leader who always knew what was going to happen in the future, and could also make perfect predictions. (Check out our episode on planning for other ideas!) But vision is bigger than that. Vision means that you look at the present, you understand the past, and you think about where you want to go in the future. It is a deceptively complex skill, because you cannot ever know you are doing exactly the right thing –but if you do not have vision, you and your library go nowhere.
Following a two-year pilot, readership of Ebooks Minnesota, a free online book collection available to all Minnesotans, is taking off. The collection — managed by Minitex at the University of Minnesota — saw an 86 percent increase in readership during its second year. Through April 2018, out of 4,000 available ebooks in the collection, Minnesotans of all ages have connected to an ebook a total of 158,868 times. The platform requires no login (the only requirement for any user is to be within Minnesota borders) and is accessible at no cost through iTunes, Google Play, and Kindle apps.
