Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, Forty high schools throughout West Virginia receive recognition for their efforts in helping students plan for college…a popular hiking trail in the New River Gorge gets additional parking spots…and are you brave enough to stay at a haunted campground on Sutton Lake?...on today's daily304. #1 – From WV PRESS – Principals, counselors, and staff from 40 high schools across West Virginia were recognized this month for their efforts to inform students of higher education opportunities after graduation.  The “Champion of College Access and Success” recognition awards are annually presented by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the Council for Community and Technical Education to select schools that foster a college and career readiness culture within their communities. Representatives from the Champion schools attended an award ceremony at Stonewall Resort in conjunction with a statewide summit focused on affordable college and career pathways.  For more information about Champions of College Access and Success and college planning events, visit the College for West Virginia website at cfwvconnect.com/champion. Just in time for the Gorge's annual Bridge Day celebration, Gov. Jim Justice joined Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby and officials with the West Virginia Division of Highways recently to welcome the additional 70 parking spaces at the Endless Wall Trail. Ruby said the DOH first came out and widened the portion of Lansing-Edmond Road the trail sits off of, making it safe for the public to create an additional 30 parking spots. Then, just recently, DOH crews created the additional 70 more spots from a completely dense forest adjacent to the trail. According to the Department of Tourism, the New River Gorge area sees about 2 million visitors a year. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2024/10/14/parking-expanded-for-the-endless-wall-trail-in-fayette-county/ #3 – From WV EXPLORER –While there are many remote campgrounds in West Virginia, few boast their own ghosts. Though only 30 minutes from Interstate 79, Baker's Run Campground may feel remote due to how it tucks into the hills on the Elk River at Sutton Lake, and that's much of its allure. According to most versions of the once-famous tale, the ghost is that of Jacob Beamer, who was fond of moonlight walks. He met his end one night when he was hit by a train. For many years afterward, his ghost was said to appear to wanderers at night as it searched for his missing head.  Need more than a ghost to have a good time? Sutton Lake has recently become famous for alleged sightings of a Bigfoot, and the whole of the region is renowned as the site of the crash landing of the Flatwoods Monster. And if that's not enough, there are plenty of great opportunities for camping and fishing! The rock, which resembles the layout of a stone street, is a geological formation known as tessellated pavement, according to a West Virginia University geology professor. It is the result of tensional cracks that form in rock under applied stress. The unusual pattern offers a glimpse into the forces that shaped our mountains and rivers millions of years ago. A group of teens cuts cardboard with X-ACTO Knives. They will soon shape this cardboard into architectural models of their bedrooms. Behind them in a classroom at the Dunwoody College of Technology, large windows frame the Minneapolis cityscape — a sampling of building types through the ages, from the early 20th-century Basilica of St. Mary to the IDS skyscraper built in 1973.“It's my first time doing something in architectural-related study,” says Dominic Stewart of Burnsville.“I'm excited to get that hands-on experience,” says Carsyn Johnson of Elk River. They are here for the weeklong Indigenous Design Camp, the first camp of its kind in the U.S. The goal is to teach Indigenous teens about career options in architecture and design, a field where Native Americans are underrepresented.Indigenous architects Two of the founders of the new camp — architects and friends Mike Laverdure and Sam Olbekson — estimate that there are only about 30 Indigenous architects total in the U.S.Laverdure is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and a partner at DSGW Architects as well as the president of First American Design Studio. Olbekson is a citizen of the White Earth Nation and founded the firm Full Circle Indigenous Planning and Design. They are the only two practicing Native architects in Minnesota.  Renovated Minneapolis American Indian Center reflects urban Indigenous identity“The need for creating a space for kids to become designers, Indigenous designers, is great,” says Laverdure, who has wanted to start this camp for years. “Representation matters for these kids to see us as architects and designers. A lot of us who grew up in reservations or urban Indigenous communities only see a few career types.”“This is the first time anyone has ever done this in the U.S.,” Olbekson adds. “It's the right time for Indigenous communities, tribal communities, nonprofits, to really take a self-initiated approach to design, to hire architects to understand the value and the importance of designing and operating a project from an Indigenous lens.”The campersThe campers are Indigenous teens ages 14-18 from the metro area. They will be constructing architectural models all week. Campers will also tour the University of Minnesota School of Architecture and local architecture firms. They will also visit the American Indian Cultural Corridor on Franklin Avenue, where both Laverdure and Olbekson have designed buildings, as well as another Olbekson project, the recently completed expansion of the Red Lake Nation College downtown.Olbekson says, “to actually go and see [the buildings] and see the impact that they're having on the community, not only as individual buildings, but how they're forming an identity for the American Indian Cultural Corridor and how these projects are supporting education, economic development, community building, cultural development, and youth and elder spaces, I think is going to be a great way for them to understand the impact of what design, urban design, interiors, landscape, can have on creating a healthy, Indigenous urban community.”The camp began Monday morning with a welcome from Laverdure, Olbekson and University of Minnesota assistant architecture professor Jessica Garcia Fritz, a citizen of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Fritz also helped start the camp.“If you think about your home reservations, or your urban communities, you think about all the buildings that are there,” Laverdure told the class, “Ninety-nine percent of all the buildings built that Indigenous people sit in are not designed by indigenous designers. They're designed by other people who don't have a stake in the game, who don't really have a connection to that community.”Laverdure continued, “When you have Indigenous designers be a part of that process, what happens is that those buildings have a special kind of connection to the communities and that makes those buildings extra special.”Indigenous architecture, past and presentNext came a presentation on Indigenous architecture, past and present, by Tammy Eagle Bull, who did a video call from her home in Arizona. Eagle Bull is a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. In 1994, she became the first Native woman in the U.S. to become a licensed architect. Camper Carsyn Johnson says this fact caught her by surprise.“I was surprised about it, though, a little disappointed, because I feel like as a society, we should move further ahead a little bit,” Johnson says. For the remainder of the first day of camp, Jessica Garcia Fritz guided campers in a design exercise to create their sleep space or bedroom. First, they taped 10 by 10-foot squares on the classroom floor to help them visualize the scale. Then they sketched blueprints of their bedrooms. Finally, they cut and scored cardboard to build shoebox-size models. As the week progresses, the campers will join their models to create collective spaces as well as design larger communal spaces as a group.“One of the things Tammy Eagle Bull had said this morning was, ‘I wish that a camp like this had existed when I was young.' I think that's the sentiment among many of us,” Garcia Fritz says.”Part of the motivation behind this is to be able to show Indigenous high school students what those pathways are, to bring them into the environments so that we can have more representation. I think that many of us can maybe speak to the fact that we may have been the only Indigenous people in our classes at the time. Our instructors probably didn't know how to work within what we may have wanted to do. I think that's changing.”Garcia Fritz, Laverdure and Olbekson hope this camp is the first of many. One of the goals is to expand the camp to greater Minnesota.“Right now, it's in the Twin Cities, but there are so many Indigenous communities regionally, up north and even in other states that could really benefit from this,” Olbekson says. “Long term, we want to create a space where five to 10 years from now, we've got 10, 15, 20, Native designers that are out there and being a force for change,” Laverdure says. The camp ends Friday when campers present their final architectural models.

The Mountain State, along with Texas, nabbed the top two spots in the Fit Small Business ranking of Best States to Start a Business. The report examined business, economic, and demographic data in all fifty states to arrive at its best-of list. That data revealed some surprising results, according to small business expert Brigitte Korte. “All of the states in the Top 10 offer business owners an inexpensive labor force, lower operating costs, and a business-friendly environment,” said small business expert Brigitte Korte. “Some of the states … may be smaller, but they're still giants when it comes to business opportunity.” West Virginia ranked 7th in overall affordability, 9th in labor market strength, and 11th in local market Read more: https://www.brproud.com/business/press-releases/ein-presswire/695022398/fit-small-business-reveals-best-states-to-start-a-business-in-2024/   #2 – From WV MetroNews – Jackson County's largest employer will make high-dollar investments into the future of their facilities. Constellium Rolled Products unveiled a partnership Monday with the U.S. Department of Energy which will enable the replacement of three aging and obsolete casthouses in the mill at Ravenswood. They'll be upgraded to two state-of-the-art casters. The new casters will implement the most modern fuel technology available. “It's breakthrough technology to allow our combustion systems to be fueled by virtually any type of material, including when it becomes affordable and available, hydrogen. It will make us a carbon-free casting environment,” said Brian McCallie, vice president of operations for Constellium. The Ravenswood plant employs 1,100 workers. McCallie said the upgrades would protect the current jobs and that inclusions in the plan will make the operation prime for expansion in the future. From water trails to four-wheeling, outdoor recreation abounds in the Advantage Valley. And a historic property in Ansted has links to explorer William Clark…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY – Once again, the “Grow This: West Virginia Garden Challenge” is sending out free seeds to help West Virginians start their own garden, but this year's challenge has some added competition. According to the West Virginia University Extension Grow This organization, last year's challenge, which distributed seeds to 25,000 West Virginians, was “a practice round for 2024.” This year, they're giving out seeds for Jimmy Nardello peppers, red Russian kale and scarlet nantes carrots. Individuals, families and groups in West Virginia can sign up to get free seeds and to join a state-wide competition—county versus county.  Growers can now join the challenge by filling out a survey, and once they get their seeds in April, they can earn points for their country by completing challenges. Whether it's hiking, paddling, horseback riding or zooming around in an all-terrain vehicle, there is a well-maintained pathway to accommodate all manner of activities. Along the way, residents and visitors can soak in the magnificent mountain landscapes and meet plenty of other outdoor enthusiasts who are enjoying the same thing. “Our region is a growing outdoor recreation mecca for people to explore and discover,” says Bill Currey, chairman and founder of the Coal River Group, which oversees the 88-mile Coal River Water Trail. “We have everything that you would want in terms of both land and water trails.” Other recreational opportunities include the Hatfield McCoy Trails, an extensive network of off-roading trails in southern West Virginia. Read more: https://livability.com/wv/charleston/experiences-adventures/advantage-valley-an-outdoor-lovers-paradise/   #3 – From WV EXPLORER – Historians investigating the history of a landmark tavern in southern West Virginia have uncovered evidence that explorer William Clark, of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, lodged there in the 1820s. Clark's presence at the former Tyree Tavern in Ansted was unknown until a diary entry was recently uncovered in the archives of the Lewis and Clark Trust. “It is really exciting to find an actual document—in William Clark's own hand!—that established his stop at the tavern in his 1817-1820 travel diary,” said Pamela Webster-Walsh who co-owns the property with her sister Laura Moore. Believed to have been established as a tavern in the very early 1800s, the hewn-timber structure is one of the oldest in the southern state. It was a stagecoach stop for travelers crossing the Appalachian Mountains, and during the Civil War, it served as a headquarters for both northern and southern armies. Webster-Walsh says she and Moore welcome all possible information on the history of the tavern. Correspondence through email should be directed to walshpw116@gmail.com. State Representative Walter Hudson joins Jack Tomczak and "NASCAR Kelly" to break down the persecution of pro-parent school board members in a deep red district.Elk River votes 65/35 for Republicans like Donald Trump. Yet its school district staff ask kindergarteners for "preferred pronouns." That's why John Anderson and Mindy Frieberg were elected to the board in 2022, to bring a pro-parent perspective and align policy with community values. Rather than respect the will of the people expressed through the electoral process, the majority on the board, led by the chair, and eagerly shepherded by staff, proceeded to leverage "policy, protocol, and procedure" to build a case against the new board members, accusing them of being "unprepared for meetings" because they ask questions, and censuring them for such sins as holding town halls and seeking detailed curriculum information.Hudson lays out the situation and suggests a course for action to rectify the illiberal democracy apparent in ISD 728.

State Representative Walter Hudson joins Jon Justice to discuss the censure of pro-parent school board members by ISD728 in Elk River. The proceedings highlighted a nexus of policy, procedure, and protocol which conspires to evade public scrutiny and suppress public discourse. Board members John Anderson and Mindy Freiberg were censured for such things as asking questions, talking to staff, and holding town halls. Also discussed, Democrats turning a near $20 billion surplus into a projected deficit in a single biennium. Plus, why we shouldn't expect them to slow down one bit leading toward the 2024 election.

We love retreats!  We lead them, we take them, we dream them up in our waking hours and in our sleep.  We've been hosting them together for a long time and we've learned so much over the years. How women NEED retreat.  How everyone is transformed, no matter what.  How traveling to touristy, "best" destinations with other yogis really isn't the ideal anymore, rather a beautiful spot to settle into and rest does the body and soul good.  How once per year is not enough.Susan will tell you that retreat is your birthright and also your responsibility.  It is a proven way to rebalance, restore, reclaim and remember the essence of who you really are.  And THAT woman...that who-you-really-are woman...is what the world needs now.We hope you will be intrigued and inspired to join us on retreat soon.  Our January retreat to Old Field Point on the Elk River in Maryland is full; but we are on the cusp of announcing the rest of the 2024 schedule!Support the showPlease rate, review and share our podcast! It's been a pretty boring couple of weeks in cannabis in Minnesota. Oh, except for the Legacy Cup that hosted 12,000+ attendees, the number of registered cannabis businesses has skyrocketed, Elk River is allowing cannabis medicine to be administered at school by parents, and the state has begun investigating the previous selection for the Office of Cannabis Management. Then we're joined by Phillip Owens of Nomatry to talk about what led him to starting his business and what advice he would have for other BIPOC individuals wanting to enter the industry.Today's episode of Northern Lights is presented by North Star Law Group, your trusted partner in Minnesota's burgeoning legal cannabis industry.
