July 14, 2019 You'd think that a movement that's so focused on growing wouldn't want to chase off a large chunk of their potential membership. You'd think an organization dedicated to supporting that constituency within the larger movement would be considered useful instead of unwanted. The history of Secular Woman demonstrates that reality is way more complicated than that. Today's guest is Monette Richards, current president of Secular Woman. If you enjoyed this show, we'd love to have you come back next week for another episode.  You can catch Atheists Talk live, every Sunday Morning at 9am Central on AM950 KTNF online at http://www.am950radio.com/listen-live/  Contact us during the show with questions or comments at 952-946-6205 or contact us anytime via radio@mnatheists.org or tweet us @atheiststalk Support this show by visiting https://www.patreon.com/AtheistTalk

SIO124: Lawrence Krauss Accused of Sexual Misconduct; Interview with Monette Richards

This is a doozy of an episode. Lawrence Krauss was recently accused of a range of sexual harassment and misconduct. I believe his accusers. It's documented quite thoroughly by BuzzFeed. Since people are trying to casually dismiss the accusations as "Ugh, BuzzFeed" and "Anonymous sources," I took the time to make a quick and dirty breakdown of the individual charges and how many named and unnamed sources there are, and the corroborating evidence. It's not just "anonymous sources" or "rumors" by any means. Here's a great breakdown by Rebecca Watson, and here's an episode by Godless Mama. Sam Harris and Matt Dillahunty had an event scheduled with Krauss a few days after the article dropped. They ultimately agreed he shouldn't appear onstage, but for what I think were bad reasons. There's a 15 minute recording of the event that I break down. It's profoundly disappointing. Though they give pay some lip service to #metoo, it is my opinion that their actual words and conduct in this instance has fallen way short. In fact, I believe the way they have handled this instance is part of the sexist system that is leading to predators getting away with bad behavior for so long. Sam references Keillor as though he's a victim of #metoo, but I go back into that story and there are even more updates about his sexual misconduct. And finally, on a more positive note, I have a great interview with Monette Richards, who has an exciting announcement! The Kickstarter has begun for Secular Women Work! Please check it out and consider supporting them! She was quoted in this Gizmodo article about Krauss. Leave Thomas a voicemail! (916) 750-4746, remember short and to the point! It's time once again for the best podcast you've never heard of, The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week in the pre-ramble I read new iTunes reviews, though one douchepickle decided to give me a one-star review. Sad! I then go on an angry rant about the latest sexual harassment allegations against Louis CK, Al Franken and Roy Moore. I am so fed up with these guys doing this shit. It's time for men to start calling out other men on this bullshit fucking behavior. This is the only way to get this shit to stop. On the palaver I speak with activist and knitter Monette Richards. We talk about her work at Secular Woman and CFI of Northeast Ohio. We also talk about the workshops she gave at Skepticon, one and half of which I attended! We discussed other topics such as Mythicist Milwaukee, YouTube atheists, the #metoo campaign, and much more. Monette was a pleasure to talk to, and she is passionate about her work, which really comes through in the interview. She is also funny and down to earth, and I am glad I got to meet her in person at Skepticon! I think y'all will enjoy our conversation. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Welcome to another thrilling edition of The Triple Po! I attended Skepticon 10, which was November 10 - 12 in Springfield, MO. I had a lot of fun, and I learned so much from the workshops and speakers. I got to meet so many cool people, both old friends and new faces. I want to thank you the organizers for putting it on, and I look forward to attending the next Skepticon, which I found out will be in St. Louis next time, which is closer to me! For the palaver, I did some mini-interviews with six people : blogger, activist and friend Jessica Xiao; volunteer at the Humanist Service Corps Jude Lane; blogger and activist Heina Dadabhoy; blogger, activist, sometime podcaster and Queen of the Outrage Brigade Stephanie Zvan; Organizer and activist Monette Richards; and Founder and President of Black Nonbelievers Inc., and one of my favorite people Mandisa Thomas. It was such a pleasure and honor to speak to them. All of them have been on the show previously except Monette Richards, and that will be remedied soon as I am interviewing her next week. The show is longer than usual, but I felt that getting all these voices out there was important, and I hope I think y'all will agree. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

In spring of 2012, the secular movement was a different place for women. We were grossly underrepresented on stage, in print, and in the membership of our organizations. In a movement that prides itself on asking questions, the people asking why this under-representation was happening were being shouted down. The Center for Inquiry's (CFI) Women in Secularism conference in Washington, D.C. was created to address these problems. The brain child of Melody Hensley, the conference featured a weekend of only women speakers, and it changed the movement. This week, Stephanie Zvan talks to Debbie Goddard, Director of Outreach at CFI and Director of African Americans for Humanism, about the history of the conference and what people can look forward to this year. Debbie is organizing the fourth Women in Secularism conference, taking place September 23–25, 2016. Stephanie also talks with Monette Richards, president of CFI Northeast Ohio and co-president of Secular Woman, an organization that was born at the first Women in Secularism conference. We'll catch up on what it's been up to, as well as its hopes and plans for the future.
