Preview: Peter Berkowitz argues that American distrust of higher education is rightly earned. Universities are guilty of censoring free speech and denying basic due process rights to students accused of wrongdoing, particularly in sexual misconduct cases. Furthermore, institutions are criticized for politicizing the undergraduate curriculum or hollowing it out instead of teaching essential subjects for responsible citizenship.
This week on the podcast we examine the results of the Office for Students' first sector-wide survey on sexual misconduct. With over 50,000 responses from final-year undergraduates, the data provides a stark picture of prevalence, reporting, and staff-student relationships in higher education. But with only sector-level results released, questions remain about transparency, accountability, and the regulator's approach to such a sensitive issue.Plus we discuss the politics and potential consequences of a proposed levy on international student fees – a policy idea that could reshape funding, recruitment, and the UK's global competitiveness. And we take stock of warnings from the Institute of Physics about possible closures of departments and courses, asking what this says about funding for high-cost subjects and the sector's capacity to manage contraction and change. With Charlotte Corrish, Head of Public Policy at the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education, Mark Bennett, Vice President Research and Insight at Keystone Education Group, and David Kernohan, Deputy Editor at Wonkhe, and presented by Mark Leach, Editor-in-Chief at Wonkhe. The “regulatory burden” on sexual misconduct needs to lift the weight from studentsWhat OfS' data on harassment and sexual misconduct doesn't tell usIOP: Quarter of UK university physics departments risk closure as funding crisis bitesPublic First: Counting the cost – Modelling the economic impact of a potential levy on international student fees

Female Teachers Who Sexually Assault Male Students: Understanding a Complex IssueBill Eddy and Megan Hunter explore the concerning pattern of sexual misconduct between female teachers and male students. This episode examines the psychological, interpersonal, and cultural factors that contribute to these situations, while providing insights for prevention and awareness.Understanding the DynamicsResearch indicates these cases often involve teachers targeting older adolescents (15-16 years old), with interactions occurring both inside and outside school settings. The motivations tend to be emotionally-driven rather than predatory. While federal data doesn't track gender-specific statistics, anecdotal evidence suggests increased visibility of these cases in recent years. The behavioral patterns in these cases often reveal complex emotional attachment issues, where professional boundaries become increasingly blurred. Teachers who demonstrate this conduct typically exploit their position of authority while developing inappropriate emotional connections with students. This process frequently involves grooming behaviors, where the adult gradually manipulates the relationship dynamic through special attention, emotional manipulation, and progressive boundary violations.Questions We Answer in This Episode:What psychological factors contribute to this behavior? How does grooming manifest in educational settings? What are the impacts on teenage male victims? What warning signs should parents and schools watch for?How can educational institutions prevent these situations?Key Takeaways:Clear boundaries and oversight are essential in educational settingsSchools need comprehensive policies and annual trainingParents should maintain open communication about boundariesEarly intervention and awareness can prevent escalationProfessional support should be available for at-risk teachersThis episode provides valuable insights for educators, parents, and administrators while examining the complex factors that contribute to these concerning situations. Understanding these dynamics helps create safer educational environments and better protection for students.Additional ResourcesWatch the Full New York Post video “Psychologist Explains Why Female Teachers Have Sex With Students”OrganizationsRAINN (Help for men and boys who have been sexually assaulted or abused)Article: Sexual Assault of Men and BoysNational Sexual Assault Hotline: 800.656.HOPE (U.S.)1in6.org (Support for men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault)501(c)(3) Zero Abuse ProjectExpert PublicationsLessons to Learn: Female Educators Who Sexually Abuse Their Students (Psychiatric Times)How Female Sexual Abusers Groom Their Victims (Psychology Today - Dr. Elizabeth L. There are many reasons a victim of a crime like sexual assault or domestic abuse might be afraid to come forward. Among them is the fear that, if they do not have strong enough evidence to back up their story, their assailant might sue them for defamation. A bill before the New Hampshire Legislature this year seeks to address this by prohibiting such defamation lawsuits against accusers. The bill coincides with a national effort to get similar legislation passed in other states, but some worry the proposed law goes too far. Listen as hosts Anna Brown and Mike Dunbar, of Citizens Count break it down in $100 Plus Mileage. Carol highlights the urgent need to reform the law, especially concerning coercion and control in legislative practices. She focuses exclusively on clients who have endured sexual abuse and coercion within cultic groups—not because other forms of abuse are absent, but because the law currently recognizes and addresses this specific type of abuse. The legal system inadequately acknowledges coercion in cases where individuals surrender significant amounts of money to cults or relinquish their rights to education, marriage, parenthood, or the choice not to have children. The law appears to narrowly define coercion, primarily in the context of sexual exploitation. The law also fails to recognize the deception involved when individuals are promised enlightenment through sexual relations with cult leaders, as it does not categorize this as fraud due to its religious context. There should be a legal distinction between legitimate religions deserving of tax exemptions and those that systematically defraud, enslave, or control individuals through coercion. We should not grant tax benefits to organizations that violate the law. Yet, currently, there is no clear standard for religious tax exemptions beyond the essential requirement that organizations do not operate as commercial enterprises. If there's something that many of Trump's cabinet nominees have in common, it is being credibly accused of sexual assault. Why is Trump—and MAGA world more widely—so enthusiastic about not just tolerating but elevating men with sordid, even criminal, pasts? There's Matt Gaetz, Trump's pick for US Attorney General, who withdraw from consideration on Thursday after yet another allegation of sex trafficking Then there's Pete Hegseth, Trump's slimy nominee for Secretary of Defense—not to mention Trump himself! Kavanaugh, RFK Jr., Herbster…the list goes on. This week on How We Got Here, Erin and Max interrogate why MAGA is appealing to sexually abusive men, and to what extent voters pulled the lever for Trump despite his rampant misogyny, versus because of it.
If you're tracking Donald Trump's cabinet picks, you may have noticed common threads among them: top jobs are going to people fiercely loyal to Trump, people with experience appearing on TV, but no experience directly relevant to the jobs they would be doing. There's another thing several share: being accused of sexual misconduct. Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth, HHS Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, Elon Musk, who Trump has picked to co-run the Department of Government Efficiency — all these men have faced some variation of accusations of sexual misconduct. All have denied it, or claimed no memory.Donald Trump's first presidential win helped lay the groundwork for the #MeToo movement.
