This Day in Legal History: Alabama Ten Commandments MonumentOn August 28, 2003, the Supreme Court of Alabama took down a monument of the Ten Commandments from its courthouse rotunda, marking the culmination of a high-profile legal battle. The monument had been installed by Chief Justice Roy Moore in 2001, who argued that it reflected the moral foundation of U.S. law. However, this act sparked a federal lawsuit, Glassroth v. Moore, in which three Alabama attorneys claimed the monument violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits government endorsement of religion. The federal District Court for the Middle District of Alabama agreed with the plaintiffs, ordering Moore to remove the monument. Moore refused, maintaining that he had a duty to acknowledge God in his official capacity. The case was subsequently appealed to the Eleventh Circuit, which upheld the lower court's ruling. When Moore continued to defy the court orders, the Supreme Court of Alabama intervened, removing him from his position as Chief Justice. This case became a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the separation of church and state in the United States. It is worth noting that Roy Moore, the then-Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who so vociferously argued for the inclusion of the Ten Commandment monument is the selfsame Roy Moore that, during his 2017 U.S. Senate campaign, saw nine women accuse him of inappropriate conduct. Three of the women claimed they were assaulted by Moore when they were aged 14, 16, and 28. The other six women described Moore pursuing relationships with them when they were as young as 16. Independent witnesses corroborated that Moore had a reputation for approaching teenage girls at a local mall. Moore's responses to the allegations were inconsistent, initially recognizing some accusers but later denying knowledge of any of them. Thomas V. Girardi, a prominent figure in toxic tort litigation, was convicted on four counts of wire fraud in Los Angeles federal court. Once renowned for his work on the Erin Brockovich case and his appearances on "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," the disbarred attorney faced accusations of defrauding vulnerable clients. The jury reached a unanimous verdict after just four hours of deliberation, rejecting Girardi's defense that his cognitive decline prevented him from forming intent to commit fraud.Prosecutors argued that Girardi knowingly deceived clients, fabricating excuses to explain the missing funds, which he had already spent. The trial centered on the suffering of clients who were betrayed by Girardi in their darkest moments, leading to their financial and emotional devastation. Girardi could face up to 80 years in prison at his sentencing in December. His former CFO, Christopher Kamon, will also stand trial for related charges. The case highlights Girardi's history of evading disciplinary action despite numerous complaints and reveals potential future charges against other senior lawyers at his firm.Thomas Girardi Found Guilty by Jury of Defrauding Clients (2)A recent decision by a German privacy regulator has sparked intense debate about how personal data is handled by AI models like large language models (LLMs). The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection concluded that LLMs, despite generating personal data, do not store such information in a way that makes it identifiable, challenging the notion that AI systems can retain personal data. This stance contradicts findings by technologists who argue that LLMs can memorize and reproduce specific data, including personal details. The German position could limit individuals' ability to control their data in AI systems, potentially leading to significant differences in how the U.S. and the EU regulate AI. While California is pushing for laws that explicitly protect personal data in AI, the German approach may set a precedent for a more lenient interpretation under the GDPR. This divergence highlights the complexity of applying traditional privacy laws to AI technologies, with ongoing discussions about how to reconcile these differing perspectives.By way of brief background, LLMs do not directly memorize the training material they are exposed to. Instead, they analyze vast amounts of text data and learn patterns, correlations, and structures within the language, which are then used to generate responses. This learning process involves creating a complex mathematical representation of language—a model—rather than storing specific pieces of text verbatim. However, because these models are trained on enormous datasets, they might sometimes generate outputs that resemble specific phrases or data points encountered during training, especially if those phrases are common or particularly distinctive. This can occasionally lead to the unintentional reproduction of personal or sensitive information from the training data, even though the model itself does not store or recall such information in a traditional, deliberate sense.Of course, that would all be of slim comfort to someone who sees an AI chatbot spit out their home address and social security number in response to a prompt. Personal Info in AI Models Threatens Split in US, EU ApproachSpecial Counsel Jack Smith is moving forward with prosecuting Donald Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election, despite a recent setback from the Supreme Court. The court found that Trump might have partial immunity from prosecution for actions taken as president, leading Smith to file a revised indictment. This new version removes claims related to Trump's communications with government officials, including efforts to involve the Justice Department, but retains the core charges accusing Trump of conspiring to reverse his election loss. The case comes as Trump campaigns for the 2024 election, adding tension to the legal proceedings. Trump criticized the indictment on social media, calling for its dismissal. The updated indictment also cuts references to former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark as a co-conspirator and modifies Trump's description, downplaying his role as president at the time. The case now focuses more on Trump's role as a candidate rather than his presidential actions. As the case progresses, Trump faces other legal challenges, including cases involving classified documents and charges in Georgia related to the 2020 election.Trump Special Counsel Presses Ahead With 2020 Election Case (3)A U.S. appeals court has revived a lawsuit against TikTok by the mother of a 10-year-old girl who died after attempting a dangerous "blackout challenge" promoted on the platform. The Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that TikTok is not shielded by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which typically protects internet companies from liability for user-generated content. The court found that Section 230 does not apply when TikTok's algorithm actively recommends harmful content, viewing such recommendations as the company's own speech. This decision marks a shift from previous interpretations of Section 230, which had generally protected platforms from liability for failing to prevent the spread of harmful content. The ruling overturns a lower court's dismissal of the case, allowing the mother, Tawainna Anderson, to pursue claims against TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, following her daughter Nylah's death in 2021. The case could have significant implications for how tech companies are held accountable for the content their algorithms promote.TikTok must face lawsuit over 10-year-old girl's death, US court rules | Reuters This is a public episode. Oklahoma Bible mandate: Ryan Walters threatens 'rogue' districtsThe Oklahoman, By M. Scott Carter Murray Evans, on July 31, 2024https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/education/2024/07/31/oklahoma-bible-in-schools-ryan-walters-threatens-rogue-districts/74599357007/Oklahoma's State School Superintendent has stirred controversy again by mandating the teaching of the Bible in public school classrooms, threatening repercussions for districts that don't comply. Although legal scholars widely regard this move as unconstitutional, the Superintendent remains resolute, seemingly unbothered by potential legal challenges. Critics argue that his accusations against school districts for being "rogue" are baseless, pointing out that local control over curriculum is enshrined in Oklahoma law. Despite this, the Superintendent continues to push his agenda, possibly for political gain rather than genuine educational reform. This situation echoes past instances where political figures attempted to impose religious mandates, reminiscent of Alabama's Roy Moore and his failed efforts to install a Ten Commandments monument. The Superintendent's actions are viewed by some as a distraction from more pressing issues, particularly the poor state of Oklahoma's education system, which ranks among the lowest in the nation. Rather than addressing these deep-rooted problems, the focus has shifted to controversial religious initiatives, leaving the state's educational challenges unaddressed. Furthermore, the Superintendent's policies may be seen as part of a broader effort to suppress minority cultures, especially in areas bordering indigenous territories. This has sparked concerns about the imposition of a singular religious ideology at the expense of cultural diversity and educational quality. Critics fear that this move, under the guise of improving educational outcomes, is actually a politically motivated attempt to rally specific voter bases while ignoring the true needs of Oklahoma's students and educators. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.32.1 featuring  Kelley Laughlin, Jonathan Roudabush, and Phoebe RoseBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

A block of 10 states, primarily in the South but also including states like the Dakotas and Idaho, have successfully implemented near-total bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy, with limited exceptions. Fourteen states currently have laws that ban all or most abortions, and available data suggests that these pro-life laws could potentially eliminate an estimated 200,000 abortions annually. These 14 states, which accounted for approximately 110,000 abortions per year before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, have witnessed a drastic reduction in abortion numbers. Abortion rates have plummeted to below 10 per month since the reversal, leading to the closure of numerous abortion facilities and a shift in the reproductive landscape. Birth data reflects the efficacy of these pro-life measures, with Texas experiencing a notable 4.7 percent increase in births last year. Reports also indicate that women in states with abortion bans are increasingly choosing life, often with the support of pro-life pregnancy centers. * Trump's PACs Spent Roughly $50M on Legal Expenses in 2023 - NYT. * Roy Moore is awarded $8.2M in a defamation suit - NPR - A Democratic-aligned super PAC is ordered to pay Roy Moore $8.2M in a defamation suit - AUGUST 13, 2022 The Associated Press.

Martin (“Marty”) Baron may be best known in pop culture as a character played by actor Liv Schreiber in the 2015 Academy Award Winning film “Spotlight," which re-told the story of the Globe's 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporting on the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandals. But many in our industry followed Baron closely years later when he moved from the Globe to The Washington Post, succeeding Marcus Brauchli in 2013 as executive editor. Shortly after the move, the Graham family announced they were selling the Post to Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. During the following years, under Baron's leadership, The Post received 10 Pulitzers — four for national reporting, two for explanatory reporting, and single wins for investigative reporting, criticism, feature photography and public service. Some of the major stories the Post broke included coverage of the US Secret Service's security lapses, revealing Roy Moore's sexual misconduct, plus constant, ongoing investigation of the Trump campaign and subsequent four-year administration, exposing many miss-truths and scandals. It is no wonder that Trump was quoted in 2018 as saying, "I will not allow our great country to be sold out by anti-Trump haters in the dying newspaper industry,” singling out The Post for writing “bad stories even on my very positive achievements.” His new book, "Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos, and The Washington Post," opens with Baron telling the tale of his dinner at the White House. Donald Trump invited Baron, two other senior executives, and Bezos, intending to get The Post to tone down their coverage of his presidency and be "more fair to him." Baron describes Trump as "fundamentally a transactional individual, and if he granted us the favor of dinner, he would expect something in return." But this book is not written as a personal memoir like Ben Bradlees's “A Good Life.” "Collision of Power" focuses on his experiences managing The Post's newsroom during an extraordinary time. Washington was under Trump's influence, and the news publishing industry was changing from a legacy media world to one of social media, blogging and other digital disruptions. In this episode, we go one-on-one with industry veteran Marty Baron, where we discuss his recently released book, "Collision of Power,” which offers an inside view of his time as executive editor of The Washington Post under Bezos' ownership and during Trump's presidency. We also hear his thoughts on managing a newsroom in today's challenging news media ecosystem.

If you've felt like the news cycle has been out of control in the past few years, imagine being the editor of one of the most prominent papers in the US. Martin Baron had over a decade of newsroom experience before he took charge of The Washington Post in 2013. But just seven months into his new job, Baron received unexpected news: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos would buy (and own) the Post, marking a sudden end of control by the esteemed family that had presided over the paper for 80 years. Two years after that jarring shift, Donald Trump won the presidency. Baron found himself working for the capital's newspaper owned by one of the world's richest men while reporting on a president with an anti-press platform who once referred to them as the “lowest form of humanity.” In his debut release Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos, and The Washington Post, Baron provides readers with a personal account of the immense pressure faced by both him and his colleagues. Despite unprecedented circumstances, Baron led the Post‘s staff to award-winning coverage: stories about Trump's purported charitable giving, misconduct by the Secret Service, and former chief justice Roy Moore's troubling history. In addition to external challenges, Baron faced internal battles as well, such as changing societal dynamics around gender and race. Part memoir, part investigation, Collision of Power details the feat of managing the Post's newsroom while meeting a new owner's demands, all while simultaneously contending with a president who waged war against the media. The text examines the very nature of power in 21st-century America and how key players like media, money, technology, and politics interact and intersect. Martin Baron is a longtime journalist and newspaper editor. He ran the newsrooms of The Miami Herald and The Boston Globe before being named executive editor of The Washington Post in 2013. His role in launching an investigation of the Catholic Church's cover-up of sexual abuse by clergy was portrayed in the Academy Award-winning movie “Spotlight.” Baron retired from daily journalism in early 2021 and now splits his time between Western Massachusetts and New York City. Collision of Power is his first book. Frank Blethen is the publisher of The Seattle Times and the great-grandson of the 126-year-old company's founder. On this day in history August 28, 2003, the Supreme Court of Alabama removed a monument of the Ten Commandments from its courthouse. The Ten Commandments monument in the Alabama Supreme Court building was initially installed by Chief Justice Roy Moore, garnering support from evangelical Christians nationwide. However, Moore's refusal to comply with a federal court order to remove the monument by August 20 led to divisions among religious conservatives. Prominent figures like Pat Robertson criticized Moore for undermining the rule of law, while others like James Dobson praised him for prioritizing "God's law." Eventually, the monument was moved to a storage room, complying with the federal court order, but causing protests and prayers from demonstrators. The issue remained divisive, with Moore filing an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, even as eight of his state Supreme Court colleagues overruled him and ordered the monument's removal. Ultimately, the Supreme Court denied certiorari and the case died there–with the monument in a storage room and Roy Moore eyeing bigger things.Moore's bid for those bigger things – namely a special election to the Senate – would similarly end in failure. In 2017, in the midst of a campaign, Moore faced allegations of misconduct from multiple women. Some of these women allegedly claimed that Moore had assaulted them when they were minors and he was in his 30s. Moore denied all allegations and received varying levels of support from Republican figures, including an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Despite the allegations, Moore's name remained on the ballot, and he ultimately lost the election to Democratic candidate Doug Jones. Legal battles ensued, including defamation lawsuits from both Moore and one of the accusers, and as of August 2022, Moore was awarded $8.2 million in a defamation lawsuit, which is currently under appeal. The monument, as of 2020, was on display on private property in Montgomery, at Roy Moore's “Foundation for Moral Law” building. Millions of Americans struggling with ADHD medication shortages may find relief as U.S. regulators have approved a generic form of Vyvanse, a drug by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. This generic version could serve as an alternative to generic Adderall, which has been in short supply for a year. The approval is expected to bring financial relief to over one million Americans who use branded Vyvanse for ADHD or binge-eating disorder, as the cost of a 30-day supply has risen to $369. Fourteen companies are now authorized to manufacture and sell generic Vyvanse, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The shortage of generic Adderall began last August due to limited production at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, its main manufacturer. This led many patients to switch to Vyvanse, although its availability was also affected by manufacturing issues. Until now, Vyvanse was only available as an expensive branded drug, making it unaffordable for some patients.David Goodman, a psychiatrist and assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, noted that the main issue has been the cost. He has been switching some of his patients from Adderall to Vyvanse due to the shortage. The approval of generic Vyvanse is also expected to simplify the prescription process, as some insurance companies currently require special permission for Vyvanse coverage.Takeda Pharmaceuticals acquired Vyvanse in 2019 through its purchase of Shire Plc and has since tripled the drug's price. The company stated that its pricing aims to reflect the "value and innovation" of the treatments but did not comment on how the introduction of a generic version might affect prices.ADHD Drug Shortage Set to Ease as Generic Vyvanse Approved3M Co. has tentatively agreed to pay over $5.5 billion to settle more than 300,000 lawsuits alleging that it sold defective combat earplugs to the U.S. military. The settlement amount is significantly lower than the estimated $8-10 billion financial analysts had predicted the company might have to pay. This agreement comes after 3M's controversial attempt to limit its liability through a bankruptcy case, which ultimately failed. The company has lost 10 of 16 early trials over the earplugs, with over $250 million awarded to service members so far.The lawsuits claim that 3M knew its earplugs were too short to be effective and failed to warn the U.S. government or users. The settlement would be paid out over five years, pending approval from 3M's board. The company had tried to manage the litigation through its Aearo Technologies unit seeking Chapter 11 protection, but this move was criticized and eventually thrown out by a bankruptcy judge. The settlement would put an end to a significant portion of 3M's ongoing litigation, although the company still faces other lawsuits over PFAS "forever chemicals," which are likely to cost even more to resolve. In 2018, 3M agreed to pay $9.1 million to settle civil allegations by the U.S. Justice Department regarding the same earplugs. The company's shares rose by as much as 4% in pre-market trading following the news of the tentative settlement.3M Agrees to Pay More Than $5.5 Billion Over Military EarplugsTesla is facing its first trial over allegations that its Autopilot feature led to a fatal accident, marking a significant test for the company and its CEO, Elon Musk. The first trial, scheduled for mid-September in California, involves a 2019 crash where a Model 3 veered off a highway, hit a palm tree, and burst into flames, killing the owner and seriously injuring two passengers. A second trial in Florida in early October concerns another 2019 crash where a Model 3 drove under an 18-wheeler, resulting in the death of the owner. Both lawsuits accuse Tesla of knowing that its Autopilot system was defective.Tesla has denied liability, attributing the accidents to driver error and insisting that Autopilot is safe when properly monitored by humans. The company has previously won a case by arguing that its technology requires human monitoring, despite the names "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving."The upcoming trials could reveal new evidence about what Musk and Tesla officials knew regarding Autopilot's capabilities and limitations. Internal emails have been cited to argue that Musk is the "de facto leader" of the Autopilot team. Tesla has not commented on the trials but has been transparent about Musk's involvement in self-driving technology.Legal experts suggest that wins for Tesla could bolster confidence and sales for its software, which costs up to $15,000 per vehicle. However, losses, especially with large damage awards, could significantly impact the company's narrative and financial future. The stakes are particularly high for Tesla as these are the first trials involving fatalities linked to Autopilot. Court documents have also indicated that both sides are aware of the system's shortcomings, and punitive damages are being considered in the Florida case. Tesla has filed an emergency motion to keep deposition transcripts and other documents secret, a move that is being opposed by the plaintiffs.Focus: Tesla braces for its first trial involving Autopilot fatality | ReutersLawyers for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich have appealed a Moscow court's decision to extend his pretrial detention until November 30. Gershkovich, a 31-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested on March 29 while on a reporting assignment in Russia. He is accused of espionage by Russia's Federal Security Service, a charge that both he and the Wall Street Journal, as well as the U.S. government, strongly deny. If the extension holds, Gershkovich will have been in detention for at least eight months before any trial begins, although a trial date has not yet been set. Previous requests by Gershkovich's lawyers for bail or house arrest have been denied. Gershkovich is the first American journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the end of the Cold War. The U.S. State Department has labeled him as wrongfully detained and is exerting pressure on Russia for his release.Lawyers for Evan Gershkovich Appeal Extension of Pretrial Detention - WSJGeorgia Republicans are planning to use a new law to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who recently indicted former President Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. The law, signed by Republican Governor Brian Kemp in May, allows a commission of political appointees to remove elected prosecutors for various reasons, including not prosecuting certain offenses. State Sen. Clint Dixon accused Willis of using the justice system against political opponents and aiming to become a "leftist celebrity." The Public Rights Project, a nonprofit, has filed a preliminary injunction to halt any disciplinary or removal proceedings against prosecutors while litigation over the law is ongoing. The new law is part of a larger trend across the U.S., where nearly 40 similar measures have been introduced in a third of states since 2017. These laws often target prosecutors who are implementing criminal justice reforms and are usually driven by white Republican lawmakers against Black Democrats in cities. The law has already had a chilling effect on prosecutors across Georgia, making them hesitant to discuss their work or pursue reforms for fear of being targeted for removal.Georgia GOP Gears Up to Remove Atlanta Prosecutor Who Indicted Donald Trump Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Washington D.C. in the 1850s was a tale of two cities. It was the Capitol city of a rapidly expanding new nation while at the same time ground zero for a politically fractured and divided nation hurtling toward disunion. Standing in the middle of it all was Montgomery C. Meigs, a military engineer who led the construction of two massive public works projects at the same time: the expansion of the Capitol building and an aqueduct to provide water to the residents growing city. Meigs would go on to serve as Quartermaster for the Union Army under Abraham Lincoln. Meigs was an innovator, public servant, and one of the most important patriots of the nineteenth century. This week Bob welcomes author and journalist Robert O'Harrow Jr. to discuss his 2016 book, The Quartermaster: Montgomery C. Meigs, Lincoln's General, Master Builder of the Union Army. For thirty years Robert O'Harrow Jr. was an investigative journalist and contributing writer at The Washington Post and was among the first national journalists to cover cybersecurity. In 2017, he part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of notorious Alabama political Roy Moore. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

The very idea that you can lose your property for not paying a tax to the government is a complete destruction of property rights. After all, you only truly own something if no one else has any claim to it. In the same way, so long as Americans are forced to pay property taxes under the threat of having their home and land confiscated, they don't really own their property. The property tax has reduced us to renters in perpetuity, with the government merely giving us “permission” to stay in our homes so long as we pay them the ransom money. * Getting rid of the property tax would be one of the most popular proposals Republicans could put forward. Taking place during the Christmas season, a group of sorority sisters are preparing for the holiday break when a derranged caller ("The Moaner") keeps calling and harrassing them. But soon the calls become more threatening. And then worse. One of the more inspirational/impactful films on the horror genre, Black Christmas has beeb remade multiple times. Did all the big-name end times teachers think that they would still be preaching in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, and as a group dying of old age? No, of course not. We discuss this in a series on BEL beginning on May 14th, 2018 for the 70th anniversary of the modern State of Israel. See specifically the program, How to turn perfectly good Scripture into bad predictions. We love these guys, and Bob personally (and literally) sat at the feet of Chuck Smith and Chuch Missler for scores of Bible studies. But clearly, their dying of old age indicates that they got something very wrong in their interpretation of the headlines and the Scriptures...   - Tim LaHaye (90, 1926 - 2016, Left Behind Series) - Chuck Smith (86, 1927 - 2013, founder, Calvary Chapel) - Chuck Missler (83, 1934-2018, end times teacher) - Harold Camping (92, 1921-2013, founder, Family Radio) - Hal Lindsey (91, b. 1929, Late Great Planet Earth) - Noah Hutchings (92, 1922-2015, six decades on Southwest Radio Church) - Irvin Baxter (75, 1945-2020, Endtime Ministries) as described by B.E. - John Hagee (81, b. 1940; recent error: Blood Moons) - Jack Van Impe (88, 1931-2020; had celebrated his 60-year anniversary with Rexella; began in ministry in 1948 and as a preacher in 1952). Thousands of news headlines were misinterpreted prophetically to arrive at these erroneous dates. Of course the Lord will return one day, and hopefully, soon. But confused teachers used events and dates like these to confuse others. - 1850 for the ascent of the Anti-Christ (calculated by London's protestant scholar Robert Fleming, V.D.M in 1701 by adding to 608 A.D. the "1260 days" of Revelation, converting each day to a year - 1948 the nation of Israel is reconstituted in the Middle East - 1957 European Common Market (ECM) established with six nations - 1973 The ECM added three more nations, prophecy teachers added this up to Daniel's "ten toes" - 1980 In the decade of the 80s, three more nations joined the ECM, still adding up to Daniel's ten toes - 1993 The European Union (EU) was formed with 12 nations - 1995 Ten Nation European Alliance (WEU) formed, claimed to be Daniel's 10-toed prophecy - 2001 Islamic terrorist attack on America, claimed to represent the end times - 2010 Ten Nation European WEU decides to disband claimed as major fulfillment of prophecy - 2011 Ten Nation WEU officially disbands and absorbed into the EU - 2016 The now 28-nation EU begins to unravel with the UK's Brexit and Italy's no-confidence vote- 2020 With the U.K. officially out, the EU is down to 27 nations.* Counting Backwards From 2020: It's been... 1,520 years since A.D. 500, the year when Irenaeus, et al, predicted that Jesus would return 1,220 years since A.D. 800, the year when Sextus Julius Africanus predicted Armageddon 1,020 years since A.D. 1000, the year when Pope Sylvester II, et al, predicted the beginning of the end 176 years since 1844 when the early 7th Day Adventists believed Christ would have returned 170 years since 1850 when Robert Fleming, writing in 1700 A.D., calculated the anti-Christ's reign 142 years since 1878 when Jehovah's Witnesses said would be the last year for the church on earth 116 years since 1914 when the Jehovah's Witnesses said it would be the end 99 years since 1921 when the JW's said millions now living will never die 84 years since 1936, the year when Herbert W. The guy, Jim from Columbus, Ohio asked me, "Bob, where do you stand on the Ebola virus?" I answered, "I'm against it." Looking at the news events listed above, when they occurred popular prophecy teachers claimed they represented end times prophecies. Well, it's been a long time since. The "end times" is a lot longer than any of them would have predicted. As we say at Denver Bible Church to those misinterpreting last-days prophecies, "From now only, will you only tell us about the Last Minutes?" Afterall, the most famous end-times teachers are all dying of old age and these last-days interpretations have been around for more than half a century. * The Bible shows the Timing of Christ's Return has Changed: You can link directly to this section as kgov.com/second-coming-timing or kgov.com/second-coming-timing-has-changed. For most folks, before reading this list we recommend praying, "Lord, if Your Word clearly teaches something that I will tend to reject because it conflicts with some of my biases, please help me to be humble before You and willing to challenge my preexisting beliefs." - God Views the End Times Calendar as Changeable: "I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time" Isa. 60:22 - Believers Can Change the Time of Christ's Return: Peter wrote that believers too should set about, "hastening the coming of the day of God" 2 Pet. 3:12 - Even the Length of the Tribulation will Change: Jesus said that, "those days will be shortened" Mat. 24:22 - Like God Shortening His Punishment of Israel: the Old Testament precedents for God shortening the coming Tribulation, include, "choose... seven years... Or... three months... Or... three days' plague..." And David said... "His mercies are great..." So the Lord heeded the prayers for the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Israel. 2 Sam. 24:12-17, 25 - For God Promised Mercy Regardless of Prophecy If...: "The instant I speak concerning a nation [Israel], to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will repent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it." Jer. 18:7-8 (see also a dozen more Category 1 verses like that one, including the next, about Nineveh) - Again, Get This Down, God Promises Mercy Regardless of Prophecy If: "...forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! Jonah 3:10 - Before You Get Through Israel's Villages: "...I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes." Mat. 10:23 (yet this did not happen, because as warned, God changed His plan for Israel; Jer. 18:9-10; Rom. 11) - Some of You Won't Die Until: "there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." Mat. 16:28 (this didn't refer to the Transfiguration which occurred about a day later; see too Mark 9 and Luke 9; yet they all did die, because God changed His plan for Israel, and grafted in the Gentiles; Jer. 18:9-10; Rom. 11) - John Might Not Die Before: "Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, 'If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?'" John 21:23 - This Generation Won't Pass Until: "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place." Mat. 24:34  (yet that generation did pass away, because God changed His plan for Israel and instead grafted in the Gentiles; Jer. 18:9-10; Rom. 11) - Before Paul, Believers Sold their Homes: "all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles' feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need." Acts 4:34-35; 5:1-2 (this behavior, appropriate at the time, changed after Paul's Acts 9 conversion when God grafted in the Gentiles) - Christ's Soon Return Permeated His Teachings: "Sell what you have and give alms" Luke 12:33; "And everyone who has left houses... or lands, for My name's sake..." Mat. 19:29. "...do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on" Luke 12:22. The "ravens... neither sow nor reap" yet "God feeds them" Luke 12:24. "He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff——no bag..." Mark 6:8. "Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your moneybelts..." Mat. 10:9. "Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and... come, follow Me" Luke 18:22. (yet He did not return soon, as He had warned that He may change His mind). And even that Jesus went about all Galilee preaching "the gospel of the kingdom" Mat. 4:23; 9:35; 24:14; Mark 1:14-15 and Jesus said, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel [of the kingdom]" Mark 1:15; Mat. 3:2; 4:17 - With Homes Sold, They Became Poor: Remember that "all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them... and they distributed to each as anyone had need." Acts 4:34-35; 5:1-2 - It Was the Converts of the Twelve Who Fell into Poverty:  1 Cor. 16:1–4; 2 Cor. 8:1-9:15; Gal. 2:10; Rom. 15:25–31; Acts 11:27–30; 24:17 for communism quickly fails; the sale of pesonal property was to be a short-term tactic to survive the Tribulation and enter the Kingdom; the Postponement led to their poverty. - Paul's Converts Kept Their Homes and Provided Relief: (The "apostle to the Gentiles" was able to raise relief from his converts) 1 Cor. 16:1–4; 2 Cor. 8:1-9:15; Gal. 2:10; Rom. 15:25–31; Acts 11:27–30; 24:17 to support the believers in Judea who fell into poverty; they hadn't immediately become poor after selling their property, but after the delay in Christ's previously-expected soon return  - God Warned He may Not Give Israel their Kingdom as Prophesied: "And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will repent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it." Jer. 18:9-10 (see also Jer. 18:7-8; for God, unlike a juvenile judge, does not make empty threats) - One Year Probation Followed Three-Year Earthly Ministry: "'Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree [figuratively, Israel] and find none. Cut it down...' But he answered and said, 'Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.'" Luke 13:7-9 - Daniel's Seventieth Week Suspended: The prophet Daniel's 490-year prophecy (Dan. 9:24-27) of 483 years between the command to rebuild Jerusalem (by Artaxerxes Neh. 2:1-8) until the execution of the Messiah, followed by the next seven years that were to be the Great Tribulation (Mat. 24:15; Mark 13:14); but Israel rejected their resurrected Messiah so as God had warned (Jer. 18:9-10) He changed what He had prophesied for them by postponing both the tribulation and the Kingdom it would usher in. - After the Cross Ten Signs of the Tribulation Were Evident: See chapter 9 of kgov.com/the-plot for details; in the year beginning with Christ's death the signs of the Great Tribulation that occurred included the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, signs and wonders, earthquakes, believers beaten by councils, the laying on of hands to imprison, arrests leading to occasion for testimony, martyrdom, expectation of an abbreviated end times and of the soon appearance of signs in the sun, moon, and stars, irresistible wisdom displayed. - Fulfillment of Prophetic Seven Feasts of Israel Suspended: God ceased the apparent fulfillment of the Feasts of Israel on their very calendar days, for Jesus died on the day the Jews killed the Passover lamb; He was in the tomb during Unleavened Bread; raised on Firstfruits; gave the Holy Spirit on Pentecost; and He "tabernacled" among us (John 1:14, with the Greek saying not "dwelt" but "tabernacled"), likely fulfilling that feast; but the remaining two feasts including Trumpets are yet awaiting fulfillment, as God postponed His prophetic plan for Israel.    - Jesus Hardly Spoke About the End Times Until Just Before the Cross: The apocalyptic Olivet Discourse happened when Jesus said to His disciples, "You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." Mat. 26:1-2 - God the Son Didn't Know the Timing: and neither did God the Holy Spirit but only the Father, for it is in His purview to decide when Jesus shall return. Just Google: open theism verses, and see Category 15, which includes the following: The Holy Spirit, third person of the Godhead, did not know something that the Father knew, namely, the planned day and hour of the Second Coming Mark 13:32 and of course that lack of knowledge did not negate His divinity for the quantitative attribute of omniscience is not like the absolute qualitative attributes; likewise, no man, no angel, nor even the Son knew, for "of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only" of the persons of the Godhead, with even the Second Person not knowing the timing of the Second Coming which was in the purview of the Father alone Mat. 24:36. - Israel's End Times Signs Not Relevant Today: When the Lord temporarily set aside Israel's Kingdom and their covenant of circumcision and grafted in the Body of Christ with its covenant of grace (this is not replacement theology), God's new sign, so to speak, of the end of the Body of Christ's time on earth is the "fullness of the Gentiles", whatever He means by that, be it a billion believers to populate heaven, or the Gospel preached worldwide, or holiness within the Body, etc.; so that, when "the fullness of the Gentiles has come in" then God will graft Israel back in again, "for God is able to graft them in again", and thereby resume the countdown on their end times calendar; Rom. 11:11-32. - To Read More about the Changed Date of the Second Coming: Click to get a copy of Bob Enyart's life's work, The Plot: An Overview of the Bible is the Key to its Details and review the list of 33 Categories of more than 500 scriptures at opentheism.org/verses. * Tonight on Denver's 7News: Bob Enyart said on 7News to Colorado's ABC audience that Christians who say that the death penalty is immoral are unwittingly accusing God the Father of being unjust, for He required a payment of death to pay for the sin of the world. Please also see AmericanRTL.org/death-penalty.    Now Back to the Harbinger: * Enyart & Cahn Agree on the Theme of The Harbinger: Bob Enyart interviews Jonathan Cahn, the NY Times bestselling author of The Harbinger. Bob appreciates Cahn's warning to an America defiant of God but Enyart disagrees with Cahn's claim that 9/11 was a specific sign from God. See just below Bob's notes regarding his reasons for disagreeing with Jonathan Cahn's claims of a specific divine message in the events following the Attack on America.   * Rejecting The Harbinger's Claim of Divine Signs: (This is not meant to be harsh, for we love and appreciate Jonathan Cahn, and though airing a daily radio talk show, we don't want to be like David who became battle hardened; yet, this is meant to be direct.) The last nine minutes of audio on today's program were recorded twelve years ago at an End Times seminar conducted in Winona Lake, Indiana only four days after Sept. 11, 2001. Bob Enyart predicted that sincere Christian authors (who love and honor God and preach the Gospel) would find a Bible passage with a few uncanny similarities to 9/11, and so would claim that therefore Al Qaeda's attack on America was a sign from God. Consider Jonathan Cahn's few parallels (which get repeated often) from Isaiah 9:10 to 9/11 events. In the audio from September 2001, Bob Enyart illustrates how easy this is to claim fulfillment of a prophetic pattern when, compared to the Harbinger, he quoted more, and more significant, 9/11 parallels, not from Isaiah but from Revelation 17 and 18. As one small example, the greater parallel between Scripture and 9/11 is not a sycamore and a fir tree, but Washington DC and NYC debating the patent rights of murdered unborn children so that "the merchants of the earth" can buy and sell the "the bodies and souls of men." So Bob intentionally misinterpreted the Scriptures to show how easily (and even innocently) this is done, and while Cahn's parallels get to select from events over a period of years, Bob's many more prophetic parallels were all fulfilled on the very day of September 11th. Harbinger Expert Critic says: "Bob, I read your analysis this morning and it was dead right on every point." - David James, 3/24/13 The Internet hasn't existed for 2,700 years. Jonathan Cahn's nine harbingers are based on a quote in the Bible of men defiant against God, who, after suffering God's judgment, repeated in utter ignorance, "The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stone; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars" (Isaiah 9:10). If the web had been forever, a Google search would probably return countless pages recording, after attacks, utterances throughout Judeo-Christian history of that quote. About 18 minutes into the program, Jonathan Cahn says about Isaiah 9:10 and the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor that back then, "you don't have anyone quoting the Scripture of judgment." Perhaps, perhaps not. In the very center of the Internet's page of Pearl Harbor Quotes we read Isaiah 9:10, not in the NIV or NASB, because those versions were translated later, but in the King James Version. Cahn chose to present his message in a book of fiction. Not unlike the folks who think Star Wars is real, for many readers, Cahn's literary device blurs the distinction between truth and fiction. The requisite suspension of disbelief necessary to enjoy the elements of the story, a wary reporter, a surprised liaison, and an unnamed prophet with curious ancient seals, works to bias the reader who emerges from the novella into the real world lacking the desire to expend the mental energy necessary for an objective consideration of The Harbinger's theological claims. The first harbinger (i.e., a seal in the book's metaphor) is the 9/11 attack. Cahn says at about 6:30 into today's program that a first attack is a sign of God's judgment and that God's protection will be further lifted if the nation does not repent. Bob suggests to Cahn that not unlike 9/11, Pearl Harbor suffered 3,000 casualties, about 2,400 of whom were killed. We live here, today, and so we are inclined to discount far-flung attacks over the last 2,700 years and view the world, unsurprisingly, through our own eyes. Bob mentioned to Jonathan that years ago he had interviewed the beloved Hal Lindsey who, through a similar here-and-now-centered interpretation, suggested that the Second Coming would be in 1988. (This was not unlike superstitious European Christians who would panic when pestilence coincided with Halley's Comet, nor unlike those who thought Jesus would return on the Y2K computer bug, nor unlike those who thought that lightning strikes signified judgment from Zeus, until that is lightning rods ruined the divine aim. Superstition, sadly, is as rampant among Christian authors as it was among the Greeks who worshiped the pantheon.) We interpret our own suffering as though it were of biblical proportion, as Cahn said at about 21:40, that in addition to the harbingers (signs), America has suffered "economic collapse". Well, collapse means different things to different people. Within 48 hours of our prerecorded interview, Dow Jones reached an all time high, and at the very minute today's show began, Reuters reported, "Housing starts point to growing economic momentum." Compare that just to even recent decimation by tsunami, typhoon, earthquake, and to the countries bankrupted, the millions slaughtered, and tens of millions ruined by war, and even to the billions in Asia and Africa who've truly suffered debilitating poverty. That's economic collapse, whereas if God brought economic sanctions against America, it wouldn't look like a downturn, and it wouldn't primarily hurt the poor and middle class. Given the freedom to be arbitrary, fans of Nostradamus (who apparently predicted the second coming, to America in the year 2013, of Twinkies and Ding Dongs) and Jean Dixon point to fulfillment of prophecy. Ironically, Isaiah 9:10 itself is not even a prophecy, so any claimed fulfillment is metaphorical at best. However, The Harbinger itself fulfilled an actual prophecy, uttered in the very week of 9/11, at that End Times seminar, which predicted that such books would be written :). And I'm not even a prophet. Over a million Americans were killed in the civil and world wars. Weren't those lives worth a Bible verse? Around 25 minutes into the program, Bob agrees with The Harbinger, in that "for Israel, being a prophet was a matter of life or death" (p. 9). Enyart then explains that today, God has withdrawn His accountability system for prophets. Jonathan did not anticipate Bob's statement that stoning a false prophet to death is no longer commanded, nor permitted, by God, as the New Testament says, that with "the priesthood being changed [by Christ], of necessity there is also a change of the law" (Hebrews 7:12). So today, while Christians tend to forget and forgive (often without even admitting) the false prophecies of their brethren, unbelievers have long memories and stumble over our false prophecies and prophetic interpretations.     The actual parallel between Israel and America, regarding 732 B.C. and 2001, is only thematic, not divinely particular. When a nation ignores God, she becomes increasingly weak and vulnerable to destruction from within and without. Contrary to The Harbinger's emphasis (p. 19), this is true for Israel and America and for Italy, Germany, and Argentina. Christians disagree terribly over interpretation of the plain words in the Bible. Realize how loose our interpretations will then be of events! What is the meaning of a flood? An earthquake? An attack? It is God! Or perhaps it's the devil! Or was it, in fact, Osama bin Laden? Jesus disapproved of such interpretations of current events in Luke 13:1-5, and when Enyart debated D. James Kennedy's Professor of New Testament from Knox Theological Seminary, this very passage, regarding 2,000-year-old headlines of murder and a fallen tower, was central to the matter. The Harbinger makes the important observation that, "during national judgment, both the righteous and the wicked perish" (p. 30). Then Cahn writes, thankfully, that God was not with Al Qaeda, but he claimed this as part of the prophetic pattern, in that, God was not with Israel's enemies who attacked her. But again this is arbitrary, for there were plenty of times when God Himself orchestrated the attacks on Israel in punishment for her national adultery. Yet it is wrong to extrapolate from those extraordinary biblical interventions that, therefore, God is the one who orchestrates a molester's rape of a child, or the Holocaust. Attributing to God the designs of the wicked comes close to blasphemy, except that it is done in ignorance, although often, through negligent ignorance. Jonathan Cahn says, rightly I assert, that God was not with Al Qaeda, yet because of a degree of superstition, he then interprets defiance against Islamic terrorism as defiance against God. Is Israel defiant today against God? Yes. (Sadly, like America they are a nation of socialists who defend abortion and homosexuality.) Does that mean that Israel's defiance of Hamas is inherently condemnable? Of course not. Cahn takes a Time magazine reporter's perfectly valid quote as a double entendre, with the entire thrust of the book implying that the defiance is against God, even though it is typically explicitly stated, as in this case, that it is against Islamic terrorists. "Rebuilding Ground Zero was going to be America's statement of defiance," (p. 63, from July 1, 2008) "to those who attacked us."Four days after the attack on American on 9/11, in our End Times seminar at Winona Lake (home of a famous Bible center, Billy Sunday, and a prayer launch pad for Billy Graham's first crusade), I didn't have to stretch the details, as Jonathan does somewhat, to make far greater and more substantive parallels between 9/11 and the book of Revelation. The world trade center, her sins had reached to heaven, the nations, peoples, tongues, and languages, Babylon the great, is fallen, the kings of the earth see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance for fear of her torment, watching the smoke of her ruin, the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury, her plagues will come in one day, death and mourning, she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her, alas, that mighty city, for in one hour your judgment has come, their commerce has ceased, no merchandising today of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, silk and scarlet, every kind of object, of wood, bronze, iron, and marble, incense, wine and oil, flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, pork bellies, and bodies and souls of men. For in the previous week, the targets of God's wrath, New York and Washington D.C. were debating the patent rights of the tiniest innocent babies, the embryos destroyed so that their bodies could be harvested and sold, by the Israelis, to businesses around the world, while American financial interests were angered that they may not be collecting the royalties they were demanding. And on the Hudson and in the New York harbor, all who travel by ship, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, "What is like this great city?" Both can't be correct, but either or both, the Harbinger and the Revelation 17-18 prophetic "parallels", could be wrong. As the above paragraph demonstrates, the more powerful and biblically extensive prophetic interpretation of 9/11 is not The Harbinger, but The Revelation. And that one is certainly wrong! For one, I intended it to be wrong. And secondly, if Revelation 18 was being fulfilled before our eyes on September 11, 2001 that would mean that we are now twelve years into Revelation chapter 19, and by now, the Second Coming should have occurred. So if the strong prophetic parallel (Revelation) isn't true, the weak one (Harbinger) probably isn't true either. Allow me to be petty. A sycamore tree and a Norwegian fir (the claimed sixth and seventh signs) do not come close to the extraordinary depth of substance and parallel between 9/11 and Revelation 17 and 18. Besides (and these are insignificant, but mentioned because such trivialities in reverse, are used in The Harbinger to make its point. The World Trade Center wasn't made of bricks. (On the contrary, it is noted for being the first supertall building to be made without masonry.) And yes, (p. 72) New York City and America rebuilt. But so did Berlin. And Rome, one could say. Destroyed cities throughout history rebuilt, with notable exceptions like Nineveh. Isaiah speaks of many sycamores, not one as at the WTC. And as Cahn acknowledges, that tree destroyed on 9/11 had the same name, sycamore, but it was a different kind of tree; in fact, a different species, and a different genus. And a different family, and a different order. If it were much different, it wouldn't be a tree, one could say. (But then again, what couldn't one say?) Isaiah says the Sycamores (plural, not singular) would be cut down (not crushed) and replaced with woods of cedar, not with a single pine tree. (2014 Update: And as the replacement of the tree was a sign of the end times, so was the removal of the tree, after it died, said Cahn.) The Harbinger also embraces the invalid contradiction of freedom yet being forced, justifying this by saying, "It takes two oars to make a boat go straight" (p. 86). Yes, but that boat illustration presents not even a theoretical contradiction, let alone an actual one. And the world isn't going straight, unless we mean straight to hell. Some of the claimed fulfillments of the prophetic pattern are really the same thing, repeated references to the attack itself, and tower falling, and the rebuilding, and the quoting, in hubris, it is true, of Isaiah 9:10 to rebuild, as by one significant government official who was… John Edwards? That disgraced non-official failed vice-presidential candidate. The 8th harbinger, coming with some peculiar justification in that spoken words are invisible, has to do with the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, which is as it should be because D.C. was also a target (although there was no harbinger from Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for that was not an intended target no doubt). A claim repeated about slavery and the civil war is that every drop of shed blood was due to the judgment of God. So then why could the British and much of the world end slavery without a similar judgment? (That could be answered, but would require prophetic interpretations specific to the unique history of each country.) And a biblical hewn stone did not need to be quarried from a mountain, let alone in upstate New York, though that claim adds flavor to the fiction and yet another confirmation of the prophecy! One would think that bureaucracy could not thwart a divine sign. That stone, though, that Jonathan writes so much about, being quarried and celebrated, ended up not as the cornerstone at ground zero but at a suburban office building. For Mayor Bloomberg, et al., changed the One World Trade Center design and diverted one of the harbingers… to Long Island. A few words about Jonathan Cahn. We don't think that we convinced him, nor even gave him pause. Yet, at the same time, we don't think that he loves God any less than we do, nor do we believe that God approves more of us than He does of Cahn. We're just asking God to help us to do our best to rightly divide, and to urge all believers to rightly divide, the Word of Truth. The Ten Commandments judge Roy Moore publicly apologized here on KGOV.com for misinterpreting something as simple as a court ruling. When the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the partial-birth abortion "ban", Judge Moore, currently Alabama's chief justice, praised that ruling as a godly pro-life victory. Traveling to Birmingham, Alabama we challenged him to actually read the opinion, and he did, and so admitted that it was the most brutally wicked ruling in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court (and that's saying something). So there's hope for Jonathan too :) The great upside of Cahn's book is its theme, which is the nation's desperate need to turn to God and the horror of losing His blessing, for as Jonathan quoted a Bible commentary, "The defiance of God shuts out immeasurable good" (p. 76). The Harbinger's downside though, is that many of its Christian readers will become even more superstitious. -Pastor Bob Enyart Denver Bible Church (See also Bob's Writings at KGOV.com/writings, and Bob's End Times seminar, and his super fun verse-by-verse study of the Book of Revelation!)  Today's Resources: Bob Enyart's Last Days Bible Studies! The OG “Black Christmas” is a 1974 Canadian horror film written by A. Roy Moore and directed by Bob Clark (Yes the same guy who made “A Christmas Story”). It's about a sorority house right before the Christmas holidays when everyone is in good spirits, drinking and partying before they leave campus for break. Four sisters and their den mother, Mrs. Mac (Marian Waldman), are left in the house after a party when they start receiving creepy phone calls from someone they refer to as “the moaner.” He's apparently been calling the house for a while and saying garbled, often sexual things to whoever answers. By the end of the film, this mysterious figure will have infiltrated the house and killed all of the women but one: Jess (Olivia Hussey), who spent much of the film defending her decision to abort an unwanted pregnancy that her boyfriend, Peter (Keir Dullea), wants to keep. There's a breathtaking scene toward the end of the film where everyone else is dead and Jess, who has barely escaped the killer, flees to the basement. From outside, she hears Peter, calling to her sweetly, confused as to why she won't answer him. When he breaks the window and enters the room, Jess hides, panicked and afraid, convinced he may be the killer. In the final act, we learn that Jess has bludgeoned Peter to death. As she lies sedated in her bed after the cops and paramedics have mostly packed up and left, we see the killer, still at large, lurking around the house and disappearing into the attic. It's a film that's about women being observed and harassed with no one to turn for help but themselves. The 2019 remake is written by April Wolfe and Sophia Takal and directed by Takal. The premise is the same, but with some key differences: The protagonist, Riley (Imogen Poots), was raped by a frat bro named Brian (Ryan McIntyre) and is dealing with trauma + rage over being dismissed/not believed by men The women are being hunted by multiple men in hooded robes … there is a supernatural twist where the men hunting them are possessed by Calvin Hawthorne and commanded to do whatever it takes to control women Instead of phone calls to the sorority house, the women receive text messages from Calvin Hawthorne, the founder of the school and presumably some old racist fuckwit. The title card at the beginning of the film gives this quote by him: “Man possesses powers so formidable they can only be considered supernatural. With a proper education, men can wield these powers and go forth into the world.” There are two final girls: Riley and Kris (Aleyse Shannon) who actually figure out what's going on and get revenge Other shit we mentioned: My holiday movie recommendations on WiR: Part 1 and Part 2 Interview with Sophia Takal in Filmmaker Magazine This Twitter thread about Hollywood's obsession with IP This interview with Art Hindle (AKA Chris) on the OG "Black Christmas"

Leigh Corfman went public with sexual abuse allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore in 2017. She was 14 when she says Moore, 32 and an asst. DA, groomed and abused her. Nine other women also came forward with stories of their own. It's been a difficult road for Leigh, but she says she would do it all over again. In a case that wrapped up earlier this year, Leigh sued Roy Moore for defamation, saying he painted her as a liar while denying her accusations of child sexual abuse. Moore countersued, claiming that Leigh's allegations were false and designed to damage him politically. Show NotesRead the Washington Post piece that broke the story of sexual allegations against Roy Moore Read the Time Magazine Person of the Year Silence Breakers issue Our beautiful theme song is written & performed by Maddie Morris and produced by Pete Ord at Haystack StudiosFind the Truth & Consequences website, Facebook page, Instagram & Twitter accounts.  S1E04_Schenck_FINALWed, 8/31 5:43PM • 53:55SPEAKERSRob Schenck, Amanda Henderson Amanda Henderson  00:04This is complexified where we dive deep into the places where religion and politics collide with Real Life. I'm your host Amanda Henderson. Today on the show, evangelical pastor, political operative and author Rob Schenk. Too many Rob Schenck is the father of the anti choice movement. As a young pastor, he drew headlines for a stunt in which a dead fetus was thrust at President Bill Clinton. Later, as you'll hear, Rob had the ears and the hearts and the pens of conservative Supreme Court justices. Years later, I had the chance to visit him in his old office overlooking the windows of the Supreme Court chambers. Today, Rob has done a complete about face and his political views. And about face he revealed in his memoir, Costly Grace. And as founder of the Bonhoeffer Institute, he's fighting the rise of Christian Nationalism. Rob Schenck, I am so grateful to have you on our podcast complexified. You are someone who has lived the complexity of religion and politics in your daily life. And it's central to your story. So the first thing that I want to dive into is the ways that we are seeing this rise in Christian Nationalism today. If we've been watching the January 6 hearings, or paying attention to the news at all, we know that one of the biggest threats that we face as a country and as a democracy is this rise in Christian Nationalism. Can you speak to the ways that you see Christian Nationalism as an immediate threat? Rob Schenck02:14Well, first, thank you, Amanda, for the invitation. I'm just as grateful to be in conversation with you, especially about such an enormously consequential subject. I actually seek Christian nationalism as the greatest threat to our democracy, and not just to our democracy. But to free countries and liberal democracies all over the world. I see Christian nationalism as distinctly different and not just different, but opposite of what you see in the model, and Person of Jesus, who was motivated by love for the other affirmation of the other invitation and embrace of the other. And Christian nationalism is the antithesis of that. It's the rejection and contempt and even violence towards the other. So I do see it as the greatest danger we're now facing, for for more than one reason. Amanda Henderson  03:36Can you take us back to your early story, you were raised Jewish, and in your high school years, converted to Christianity and really picked up the helm of this fundamentalist Christianity and then became a leader in that tradition? Rob Schenck03:58Sure. Well, it didn't start that way. You know, you. You referenced my upbringing, which was in a very liberal Jewish home, although as they say, south of the border,  my mother had been a convert to Judaism. Born and baptized, Catholic-raised, Episcopalian, really had no act of faith when she met my father. The family requested very strongly that she convert to Judaism to marry him. She did, and they pledged to raise their children with Jewish identity. So four of us were raised that way. But my mom and dad were very open minded people they said, go out and and shop religion and make your own decisions. And we each dead, and I found the son of an evangelical Methodist minister, who became a close friend And I was introduced to the message of Jesus in this little country church, I was 16 years old. And I had cut my teeth in activism, protesting the Vietnam War, I was anti war, I would have identified then as a pacifist. And here was this person of Jesus I saw as certainly against war and violence for peace. He loved the stranger, marginalized, he looked to me like a hero, in every sense, a moral hero. And I was very drawn to that message, I made a public profession of faith. And two years later, when I was 18, I went to cast my first vote happened to be the 1976 presidential year. And I voted for Jimmy Carter. Why? Because he seemed to exemplify all of the virtues that I saw in Jesus and the Sermon on the Mount. Love for the poor, for the margin lies for the suffering, advocate of peace, and so forth. So that was my first encounter with Christianity. And it was the gospel, the message that I embraced, but then as the years went on, and I went to what we call Bible college, which was preparation for professional Christian ministry, and seminary in very theologically conservative settings. I was introduced to the National Association of Evangelicals, and this was during the rise of Ronald Reagan, Jerry Falwell, the Moral Majority, a new political brand of American evangelicalism. Yeah. And that's really important to name I love the way that you really lay that out that this was a new brand, and a new way of expressing evangelical Christianity. And a lot of folks assumed that that's always been the case. But you, you were right there at the beginning of this movement. Sure, I mean, 100 years before that, or maybe 150. Before that. Evangelicals, at least a good portion of them. Were abolitionists working against slavery, they would later work against child labor, they would be some of the first to ordain women and give them leadership full and equal leadership posts in the church, you could argue that for a little period of time, evangelicals looked quite progressive. And then they became terribly regressive. And by the time I was at the seat of the leadership table in American evangelicalism, we were not just regressive. We were politically co opted, and strategically so and it was largely at the hands of, and I'm gonna say this with great affection for folks I know in the south, and some of whom were leaders in the civil rights movement, white and black. But at some point, Southern evangelicalism gained the ascendancy in the United States. So you had figures like Jerry Falwell from Virginia, and favoring the South, who now kind of took over and muscled out those more progressive evangelicals, marginalize them. And Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party struck a deal with the National Association of Evangelicals and other evangelical groups, particularly the fall well, web. And suddenly, you know, I was swept up in that Ronald Reagan was the first president to address a sitting body of American Evangelical leaders, and I was literally on the front row, literally, made sure I had a front row seat when he addressed the annual convention of the National Association of Evangelicals, I was there, and I felt the glow of presidential affirmation, and that would lead to a second conversion that I call my conversion to Ronald Reagan, Republican religion, otherwise known as white American evangelicalism. Yeah, that's so important. To name the way that felt to be recognized by someone with power, and to feel the effects and the ripple of that power in your own self and perhaps ego.  Amanda Henderson  09:58Can you speak a little bit to that feeling of being in that circle, being at that table on the front row with the most powerful decision makers in the world.  Rob Schenck10:10Sure, you know, some may think that white, privileged aggrievement was invented by Donald Trump it, it wasn't it, it preceded him by decades. And even in the early 80s, I can remember rehearsing over and over again how American evangelicals were a persecuted and disfavored minority in America. And there was a kind of myth that we were somehow disadvantaged, like, we didn't, you know, we didn't go to Ivy League schools, our clergy were some of the least educated, sometimes non educated people. And so the elite, you know, the Harvard, Yale, Stanford Duke crowd, looked down their noses at us, and publications like The New York Times, and The Washington Post, classified us as sort of the uneducated, ignorant masses. And so we had a feeling of aggrievement, we were aggrieved, and we wanted somehow to get back at elitist culture for persecuting us. And that was very present in those settings. So to have a President of the United States, say, I need you, I'm for you, a whole political party is behind you. And we want you to be in leadership, not to be marginalized. But in fact, to take center stage, that was a real rush to use colloquial language. It was relief, it was a feeling of empowerment. And up until that time, you know, we talked about servant leadership, that you lead by serving others by meeting their needs, by reaching out and loving them even when that affection wasn't reciprocated. And that's pretty tough to do. And I felt a little weary of it by then. And here was a way to instantly claim our place in society, on the national stage, in terms of influence, and even power, because we knew what the bully pulpit of the presidency meant executive powers, it probably meant that we could get a congress someday that would reflect our principles and values. And that's the tack that I took. And it was the track that I set out on. And eventually, I would take my place at the table in Washington, and visit with presidents, with leaders of Congress and ultimately with Justices of the Supreme Court. Yeah, it proved to be right. I mean, I predicted that, and in fact, it took 20 years, but it came to pass. Yeah.  Amanda Henderson  13:42Can you speak to your role in the anti abortion movement and the work to overturn Roe? And just kind of lay the groundwork for how that came to be? For you? Rob Schenck13:57Yeah, well, it started when I was recruited to participate in blockades of clinics, where abortion services among other reproductive health care was offered. And I thought of it as very much in the tradition of, you know, the civil rights movement when there were, you know, lunch counter sit ins. And, you know, we use that language and even sang those songs modified for our movement. And when I entered that arena, he saw, you know, what I then termed the unborn child as a victim of social prejudice and violence, and they needed advocacy. So we were advocates, but very early on in that experience, another voice came into the movement. Rush Limbaugh now notorious, you know, three hour per day, afternoon arch conservative radio talk show host, who, as far as anybody could tell, had no Christian  sensibilities whatsoever. Yeah. But he glommed on to our movements saw it as a kind of hot poker in the eye of liberal elites and championed us. And now we had another kind of public affirmation. It wasn't Ronald Reagan, it was Rush Limbaugh, yeah,  Amanda Henderson  15:41and a real broad reach that can't be understated the reach of his voice during that time,  Rob Schenck15:48massive. In fact, he would quickly rise to the most listened to radio talk show host in broadcast history, and would move political mountains with his influence. And we were a favorite of his. And so suddenly, the movement began to transform. Even using his peculiar vernacular, he invented all kinds of neologisms and bumper sticker type slogans and and we started employing those just as a way of identifying with his massive public influence and political influence. As people may recall, he was the one that Donald Trump would drape with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a State of the Union address, shortly before Rush Limbaugh died in a very ostentatious, cynical move. But in any case, that's how big he became over time. So that swept me into a fully politicized form of the pro life, I more accurately now terminate the anti abortion, even anti woman movements. And I watched that happen to when I first joined the movement in the late 80s, early 90s, we had many women leaders. But with time, the men would start shoving women, sometimes literally, physically aside, push them out of the way, take center stage. Eventually, those women those women leaders would disappear from from the platforms and take a very secondary or tertiary role in the movement. And the men started showing up. I harbored some doubt about this, but it was unspoken at the time, but the guys would start showing up literally in lizard skin boots. Why buckle belts, sometimes empty holsters on their belts because they didn't want to be arrested for having a weapon or with a weapon. And we were all being arrested for blockading the clinics and they didn't want to complicate matters with a firearm, but they would wear the empty holster to prove I could be wearing a firearm. I could be staying packing gently firepower. And literally Amanda, I'm not kidding you. 10 gallon cowboy hats started showing up everywhere. And suddenly this movement that had been a mix, a gender mix of leadership became exclusively male, and a kind of cartoonish, characterized male movement. And that would set the ethos, the tone of it for the next 20 plus years.  Amanda Henderson  18:52Yeah, one of the things I think we aren't fully aware of at this point, is the ways that these Christian nationalist ideas impact so many different areas of our life. And most recently, the dobs decision in the Supreme Court, which undoes 50 years of precedent with Roe versus Wade, and the effort tooverturn Roe is a part of the pole toward Christian nationalist ideology in the United States today. How did you in that time, see your Christian identity connected to your identity as an American?  Rob Schenck 19:42Yeah, that gets to the heart of the thing, because over about a 10 year period, I came to embrace and promote literally preach and promulgated this idea that our opposition to abortion was grounded in the claims made in the Declaration of Independence, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And we would say, I would say it, all of our leadership would say it over and over again right about it, and so forth, we would say, the first right is the right to life. You can't enjoy liberty, or pursue happiness unless your life is first defended. So therefore, we must defend life from the moment of conception until natural death. Now, that was a distinctly religious notion. And a distinctly Christian one, and even a more contemporary Christian one. Yeah. So yeah. It's not an ancient idea. Now, it's a new idea. So I failed to appreciate that, how narrow that interpretation of life is.  Amanda Henderson  21:13Can you say a little bit more about that? How is that a new idea? Rob Schenck21:16Well, first of all, it has its origins in Catholic moral teaching, not even in Protestant and certainly not in evangelical moral teaching. Right up to 1973. It shocks people to learn that the Southern Baptist Convention and many other evangelical bodies in the United States actually supported Roe v. Wade in 1973. It was Catholic moral teaching. That was, you know, opposed to Roe v. Wade. There are various dates for that. You know, some will go back to the early centuries of the Christian church, others much later in time, medieval, or even 16th century, 17th century. You know, it depends on which scholar you're talking to. But in any case, it does not date to biblical times. In terms of the Bible, the oldest contemplations instruction, resolutions on these questions are found in Judaism, not in Christianity. And I've argued, Jesus was Jewish. The early disciples were all Jewish. The message of Jesus was contained within the Jewish community. It was proclaimed in synagogues, not in churches, they hadn't been invented yet. So this was a Jewish ethos. And while you find Jesus commenting on many things, he never comments on abortion, even though abortion was widely practiced, in that period, the New Testament period. And in fact, there's been hard evidence of that. Archaeologists have exhumed hard evidence of abortion practices in that world. And yet Jesus never comments on it. Why? I'm convinced it's because he held to a Jewish belief about this, which is that the unborn fetus, the gestating human is of a different order than the Born and independent humans. I'm not an expert on it. I will just say that in Jewish moral instruction, first of all, the woman is always preeminent is in first position, the fetus in second position. And all of this was obliterated by modernarch, conservative, Catholic and later Evangelical, Protestant, moral teaching. It does not have its roots in Scripture, or in Christian history. It has its roots in modern social and political phenomena. And that's really important for us to understand that. Yeah. And when does this get tied to American identity and politics and Christianity? That first happened in the early 70s. But it wouldn't really take hold until the mid 80s. When groups like the Moral Majority, national right to life, and others struck a deal with the Republican Party. And that deal would progress as it went along. You know, in the first instance, it had mostly to do with presidential politics than it would become congressional politics. I was there in the middle to late 90s, at the tables with Republican Party operatives, when they offered us a deal. And they said, Look, we're with you on abortion, we know you want the reversal of Roe v. Wade, we're going to give you that we're going to deliver that for you. But in exchange, and some of them would be quite crude. I can see this, I was seated at an oak table inside the US Capitol, there were a number of national evangelical leaders at the table I was there. I would now put this at about 1995. By by now. It was after the what was called the Republican revolution of the early 90s. And a party operatives said, Look, in exchange, we're going to take down Roe, we're going to make abortion illegal in this country. But you're going to have to give us your full support, you understand that? Wow, everything we bring to the table you will support because there's nowhere else for you to go. You understand that? And there were literal handshakes across the table, we understand. How did you feel in that moment? Do you remember having any doubts or hesitations? Or were you all in? I had momentary reserve, I was a tiny bit conflicted, not enough to count, because it became the perfect expression of the ends justify the means. We have to get rid of this evil called abortion, whatever it takes, that's what we will deliver. And then over time, you become inured to those flashes of conscience. And I regret that deeply. And I'll carry that regret to my grave. Because I wish I would have listened to the voice inside of me. And I didn't. And I'll tell you that. And you know, we all know this to a certain degree. But boy, I'll tell you when you are given unfettered access to a White House, to congressional leadership, Speakers of the House, Senate leaders, and eventually, to the Justices of the Supreme Court. It's very seductive. There's a kind of washing over of your conscience that happens. You have to be extremely careful. And I was not. Frankly, I think the black church gives us the best example of how to maintain one's integrity, moral integrity and still engage. The white church failed entirely on that point. And I was part of that failure. So how did it feel it both felt like almost a superhero power had come over me. And at the same time, I felt in one sense, I lost myself. It was a very hollow feeling that became worse over time. Amanda Henderson  28:39You've been talking a lot about the Supreme Court and and your role as a part of the fundamentalist Christian evangelical movement in the concerted effort to influence the courts and to influence the Supreme Court particularly to build enough power to overturn Roe. Can you speak to that history and your own realizations at this point around that work?  Rob Schenck29:12Well, part of my work in Washington, my headquarters building was immediately across the street from the Supreme Court, I literally looked into the chambers of the justices from my office window of I could look into the conference room where they would eat lunch and then cast their votes on a decision, what's called the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Holy of Holies of the Supreme Court building. And part of my work in the in that time was to not only engage with the justices on a personal face to face level, but to introduce other influencers inside the religious right to their most personal spheres social spheres, into conversations with them. If they could travel with the justices invite the justices to their homes, to their places of business and so forth, all in an effort to bolster their sensibilities that this was exclusively with the conservative members of the court. We didn't even bother to try to engage with what we call the liberal side of the court. In those days, we just went to the conservative justices. We hatched the phrase Minister engage in the ministry of embolden meant to embolden them so they would be stronger, more confident, even more strident in their verbiage, their language, the positions they held, and eventually into their dissents, and even into their majority opinions to actually render up really strong, unapologetic uncompromising positions. And decisions as they did in a number of cases, including the most recent knobs with the reversal of Roe, probably the strongest and most strident right wing language we have ever heard, in an opinion, maybe since the 19th. Century, when, when there were decisions on slavery, and Jim Crow and so forth. So, you know, the quick answer is that was part of my quiet work. It was invisible. We didn't publicize it at all, for obvious reason. And I'm sorry to say it was quite effective. What we did in those years, Yeah, it sure was, we inserted what I called our stealth missionaries into the life of the court. And all these years later, I see that we achieved our objective. Amanda Henderson  31:53Can you speak to those early cracks in your worldview, and your understanding of the work that you were doing and the way that you were moving in these religious and political spaces with such power? When did you start to question your own actions, the whole house of cards that had been built up around your work and ideas at that point?  Rob Schenck32:27Well, it was anything but a sudden flash, to some degree, I harbored those doubts all along, but I, I came up with techniques to silence the voice of conscience deep inside of me to compartmentalize put it on a shelf, tell it, I'll I'll visit you later, sometime. Not now. There's too much work to do. But they were with me. And in particular, one thing that my father had asked me once very early on, and he said, you all talk about making America a great country and promoting its best and making its very best. I have a hard time with that. Because when I was growing up, as a Jewish person, I couldn't join certain clubs. I couldn't go to certain schools. I was beat up for being a Christ killer. When was it so good. And that haunted? And once in a while, I would visit that question and worry a little bit about it. But then I would move on. I remember sitting in a room with several members of Republican members of Congress in Washington. And we were talking about some upcoming election. I can't remember which one, but I do recall saying, you know, in, in our news conferences, we always have a phalanx of white middle aged men. Shouldn't we bring some women and some people of color into this mix? And a congressman from Alabama said, that ain't gonna help our numbers any? What's the use of that? And when he said that I winced and worried about it. But again, I kind of put it in a cabinet and said someday we'll deal with that problem, but not now. And so life went on. And then came a time and I'm almost embarrassed to tell you this. I'm not even sure you know, it was that bad. But I got very involved with former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore.  Amanda Henderson  34:41Oh, yes. Yeah. Yeah.  Rob Schenck34:42In his campaigns for Chief Justice, which he want to  Amanda Henderson  34:47say a little bit about Roy Moore. Who was he for those who might not remember that name?  Rob Schenck34:52Chief Justice Roy Moore was the Chief Justice of Alabama. I became aware of him when he was a circuit court judge in a little known rural courthouse where he had displayed a hand carved set of the 10 commandments on the wall. He was sued for that, because there were those who came in and said, How can I be sure I'm going to be treated fairly by this judge when he puts his religious beliefs right on the wall, and I don't share those religious beliefs. He won, he lost, he won, he lost. Eventually, when He ascended to Chief Justice of the state, he came up with a plan of installing a massive stone monument of the 10 commandments in the Supreme Court building of Alabama. And I helped him with that, literally, I went down and literally rolled up my sleeves and helped install that giant monument in the Alabama courthouse that would ignite a federal lawsuit. And he would eventually be removed from office by a court of the judiciary, which is extremely rare, even on a state level like that. While I was down there, I was arrested for supporting him in a protest, and I was thrown in the montgomery county jail, which at the time, was full to overflowing. They had a lack of cells to put me out. And so they put me in the psychiatric wing of jail. But it was a very, very sad, very tragic place to be. And oddly, it was the only wing of the jail. That was co ed. So there were men and women on this wing. And three doors for myself was a woman. And this is always difficult for me to tell this story. But there was a woman in a cell who was obviously, you know, experiencing some form of mental illness, she was in great agony and distress, and she kept screaming all day long. Where am I babies? I have three kids. Nobody knows where my baby, where are my babies? Where are my kids? Well, it was at first grating to hear that. And then it just started tearing at my heart at my conscience, hearing this woman's please, to which no one responded, not a soul. Nobody came to her aid. And so I was sitting there tortured, with sound, this woman screams but what I realized in that moment, was I had carried with me this imaginary bubble. All of my career as a national pro life anti abortion leader. The movement I was a part of had this kind of dream state where we imagined that any woman who was in any form of distress over a pregnancy, all she needed to do was cry out for help. And Christians would come from everywhere to assist her. We would bring everything from diapers to food vouchers, to child care, promises babysitting to whatever she needed. We would come to her aid, why would anyone ever want to have an abortion? And all the support you need is right there just for the taking. Call out and we will be there for you. No one was there for this woman. No one No one came. No one cared. No one responded. And for the first time, I came face to face with the reality of a desperate mother who could not care for her children. And she was right there in my conscience in my hearing in my presence only a few yards from me for a torturously long period of time. And I and I tell you that because it awakened me to something that I had never not engaged in to that moment, which was the reality of her world. And quietly I thought, you know, all this time, I have demanded that others leave their reality to live in my fantasy. And in that moment, I was being called out of my fantasy into her reality. And it was like an awakening. But I would still go back to Washington after it was all over and put her on the same shelf where I had put a whole lot of others. And it would await another, I'm sorry to say 10 years, before I would take that off the shelf, that terrible cry of anguish. Amanda Henderson  40:29It's this encounter with the real life of another person that has the power to crack open our fantasies and our imagined worlds. And it's not immediate, as you just named, it takes so much time. And I think that's one of the daunting things about this work. And these efforts to counter Christian nationalism, and these ideal ideologies, and ideas that are so rooted in the imagined worlds that we build for ourselves and that we place on others, it takes so long to break through those cracks. Rob Schenck41:24And it would take a decade, until finally I reached the tipping point. And it was a whole combination of things too numerous to detail here. But the real breaking point for me, came when I took a leave of absence from all of my now very political work in Washington cloak does ministry. But it was really far more political than it was. Even at that point, religious though, religion played a very big role in it. I had to take a leave of absence at one point, and my wife Cheryl was very much ahead of me in this transformation. And she took her own professional hiatus, I took mine, we went out west to Seattle, where she completed a degree she had left off when she was pregnant with our daughter. And then I decided to do my late in life doctoral work. And in that research, I looked at the problem of the evangelical church in Germany during the rise of Adolf Hitler, and not see us. And I can recall this vividly, I was in the dusty, musty basement of my seminary library in Tacoma, Washington, reading about the declaration by the Yvonne Gelish character, the Evangelical Church of Germany, when Paul outhouse one of the most revered Bible teachers of that day, declared that Adolf Hitler was a gift and miracle from God, sent to the German people to make Germany great again. Wow. And as I read that, I was reflecting on my first encounter with Donald Trump, at the 80th birthday party of the renown evangelical religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, at his party where Donald Trump was, you know, this was before he was a declared candidate for president, but he was working the room filled with evangelical leaders. And he had already tried out his slogan, make America great again. words to that effect. I don't think they had quite developed it yet. But it conveyed that and long story short is, I thought, Oh my God. We are replaying precisely what happened in Germany, the confluence of what they call blood and soil, racial and ethnic and patriotic national identity with Christianity. And that, that somehow this indicated the superior race of humans. And I, it was like, suddenly one of those scenes where all these little fragments of imagery and words and experience start coming together. And I sat there and said all Oh my God, we are perpetrating the same error that brought about one of the greatest human catastrophes. And that's why I say now that for me, Christian Nationalism is the greatest threat that we face. Because once you put religion at the service of a racialized ethnocentric political jogger, not, you remove all of the checks on that, because now that it's been sacralized, it's been made holy or divine. You don't dare question it. You can question politics, partisanship, ideology, but you don't question the mind of God. And when I started hearing, my colleagues say, that God has anointed Donald Trump and raised up the Republican Party for this time. You now remove all accountability, because for evangelicals, and I would say the same largely for Arch Conservative Catholics. The Bible says clearly, that to question God is a form of rebellion and to rebel is, quote, as the sin of witchcraft. In other words, it's satanic. So you remove all checks, all accountability, all questioning. And now you have a regime that can order its followers to dutifully obey. And if they don't, they are defying Almighty God, and therefore are in league with the devil. That's an advantage that no other political, social, even military convention can give. And we see all kinds of examples of it. And it's certainly present here, it was present on January 6, during the insurrection, it's been present in state houses, it is certainly present in the current permutation of Republican politics, on every level, and I would argue, without apology that Donald Trump embodied and will again, if reelected to the presidency, so these are not small marginal things. It is the center of the crisis we're living in. And it boils down to the subject you introduced at the very beginning of this conversation, it all amounts to the worst form of Christian nationalism. Amanda Henderson  48:13What are you doing to counter this rise that we see as a threat,  Rob Schenck48:20I'm very conscious, that I did a lot of damagefor a lot of years. And, and that, you know, that's, I don't say that for sympathy or, or to be maudlin. I'm just conscious of it. I'm very aware of it. And I know I have to do a lot of work, to even try to remediate some of that damage. That was done. And I'm trying to do that. But what I'm doing, one of the first things I'm doing is is speaking, is saying things, I think some people think, you know, what can I ever do? Well, the first thing you can do is speak your conscience. Just speak it sometimes in very small, limited ways doesn't mean you have to mount a podium somewhere or publish a tome or do an interview on some national platform. You don't even have to do a podcast with Amanda Henderson, but it helps. But you know, you can speak during a dinner at your family table. Just venture your conscience in a moment in time. Check and challenge somebody lovingly and respectfully. And even maybe with some apology or humility. Sometimes you win bigger that way, even when you assert how right you are in the moment. You might say, you know, I don't know. I don't know. I may be the only one at this table. But it bothers me and I'll tell you why. And I don't know. I go to sleep If these kinds of things, and it really troubles me, and that's just me, and then let others wrestle with fat, even if it annoys them, and angers them, let them own that and experience it, don't take it from them, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. Just let them be upset. We're all big grownups. Just even speaking your conscience, I try to do that on the platforms that I have, whether I'm blogging, or I'm speaking from a podium or a stage, or I'm sitting with sometimes the old colleagues from my old worlds. And it's amazing how many people are out there, troubled in a similar way. And all they've been waiting for is somebody to say it. And they will find you somehow they'll find you, even after the family leaves the table, somebody comes up and pulls on you. And says, I was really glad you said that. Because you know, I've been thinking some of the same things. And it's been bothering me too. And maybe they're whispering, but then two of you get talking. And now you can strengthen one another and you start speaking a little louder with a little more volume, because there's two of you now, not one, and then maybe there'll be a third and on and on it goes. So that's the small way of doing it. The other is, of course, we've got to exercise our privileges and use them as best we can. And one of those is voting. And this is not a time to sit anything out. Amanda Henderson  51:36Wonderful, Rob. Thank you so much. So for those who want to hear more about Rob's story, I can't recommend enough the film by Abigail Disney Armor of Light, and Rob's book costly grace, that I will have links to on the show notes for both of those. It's Tuesday, August 16th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Early Rain Covenant Church hit by Chinese Communists again The Early Rain Covenant Church has been hit again with another government raid in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, reports Radio Free Asia. Xing Hongwei, a Christian writer and translator, was detained. The well- coordinated attack included 23 uniformed police officers and eight or nine plainclothes police for a gathering of 50 church members. The Chengdu police department is taking a "zero tolerance" approach to the gathering of Christians for fellowship and Bible study. Thailand embraces debauchery Thailand may be one of the few Asian countries following the West into debauchery.  The country has legalized marijuana. Plus, the nation's legislature is close to passing a law allowing for civil partnerships between two members of the same gender living in a state of unnatural relations. Taiwan was the first Asian nation to approve of homosexual faux marriage in 2019.   China increased pressure on Taiwan China continued military exercises near Taiwan yesterday, following an official visit of five members of the U.S. Congress over the weekend.  The communist country's saber-rattling began several weeks ago when Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, paid a visit to the island nation. The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command  has announced these drills in preparation for “operations of joint defense and joint blockade,” reports the South China Morning Post. Psalm 9:1 and 5 tells of God's sovereignty over the nations: “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. . . You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and ever.” Hollywood rejects Kendrick's pro-life movie Hollywood studios don't mind promoting films about fatherhood and prayer, movies like “War Room” and “Courageous.” But when Alex Kendrick looked for distribution for his soon-to-be-released pro-life film, “Lifemark,” he hit a stone wall. Kendrick told Christian Headlines, “They all turned down the film. They said, ‘We're not releasing this one because we're scared of the response.'” The film, produced by Alex Kendrick and directed by Kevin Peeples, will be released in 1,400 theaters the week of September 9th. You can watch the trailer through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. 49% of Texans disapproved of Roe's overturn A Dallas Morning News survey of 1,384 Texans found 49% disapproved of the overturning of Roe v. Wade versus 42% in favor of it.  According to popular opinion, Texas is the twelfth most pro-life state in the country. In addition, Pew Research revealed the eight most pro-life states by popular opinion are West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Also, an Axios poll found that 54% of Americans would vote in favor of abortion's legality given the choice on the ballot, whereas 28% say that they would vote against it. The passage from Psalm 106: 37 & 40 addresses this sin. “They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. ... Therefore, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against His people.” California legislators considering 18 pro-abortion bills California is leading the abortion charge in the country now, as the Golden State Legislature considers 18 separate bills dedicated to abortion. The prospective pro-death laws address abortion providers, access to abortion, funding of abortion, licensing of abortion providers, abortion research, abortion fairness, paid time-off for abortion, telehealth for abortion, and protections for abortion providers. Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed California an “abortion sanctuary state.” Sparing no expense, he is even offering taxpayer-funding of out-of-state abortions. Tragically, California's Infanticide bill, AB 2223, which would allow the murder of a newborn up until 28 days old, has passed the state house. It's headed to the state senate for approval. Biden to sign so-called “Inflation Reduction Bill” today President Joe Biden is slated to sign the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” into law today — complete with a tax increase, a huge increase for the IRS, and additional funding for environmental causes and healthcare, reports CBS News. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill on a party-line vote last Friday. Home builder confidence at low point Home builder confidence in the country has dropped off for eight consecutive months. It's the worst stretch since the 2007 recession, reports the National Association of Home Builders. The total volume of single-family housing starts is headed for an annual decline this year, the first decrease in 10 years. Liberal PAC ordered to pay $8.2 million to Judge Roy Moore And finally, good news for Roy Moore, the retired Alabama Chief Justice and Ten Commandments advocate. He was awarded $8.2 million damages in a federal court, for a derogatory advertisement placed by the Senate Majority PAC during his 2017 bid for the U.S. Senate. The controversies generated by the ad during the special election are thought to have contributed to his narrow defeat to Democrat Doug Jones in the special election. Out of the 1,320,000 votes cast, Moore lost by 21,311 votes. In 2020, when Jones ran for re-election, he subsequently lost to Republican Tommy Tuberville by a wide margin. The CDC's relaxing of its guidelines is a rope-a-dope trap to get us to move on from this issue. We must realize that the fight is not over, and it begins by educating people about the Nuremberg level of crimes perpetrated against humanity. I present spellbinding data that hints at hundreds of millions of vaccine injuries and likely millions of deaths. We must make the legal, policy, and social changes, as well as fixes to the medical system, that are necessary so that governments can't do this again or use emergency powers for climate change. Also, we discuss the Roy Moore story and how he was buried alive by a sick plot that to this day the GOP establishment is responsible for. Finally, we discuss anarcho-tyranny and some crazy examples of how our country is the weakest it's ever been against true threats as it tightens the noose around our necks as patriotic Americans. Some atheists have waged war against the Ten Commandments in recent decades, forcing monuments off public property wherever they find them. One famous case involved Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who placed a monument of the Ten Commandments in the judicial building rotunda in Montgomery, the state capitol. This caused no small controversy. After a lengthy legal battle, the monument was removed from the rotunda and Roy Moore was removed from his judgeship. In another famous incident, a monument displaying the Ten Commandments at the Arkansas State Capitol was destroyed by a man who deliberately crashed his car into it less than 24 hours after it had been erected. The same individual destroyed another display by the same method a year earlier in Oklahoma, but was this only an act of one crazed man? As reported by the Associated Press: The Oklahoma Supreme Court ordered the removal of a Ten Commandments display from its Capitol in 2015, and the state's voters in 2016 rejected an initiative aimed at allowing the monument to return. (“Arkansas replaces Ten Commandments monument at state Capitol,” Times Record, April 26, 2018). Some professing Christians are rightfully angered by the assault against this God-given code of law, yet surprisingly, the greatest enemy to the commandments is not atheists. I'll show you who that enemy is, and it may surprise you! Stay tuned!
