Compass, episode 15Our previous episode: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/exploration-financing-and-consolidation-fuel-mining-sector-optimismRecording date: 14th May 2025Recent developments in the mining sector show increasing M&A activity alongside robust Q1 performance, according to Olive Resource Capital executives Samuel Pelaez and Derek Macpherson.Pan-American Silver's $2.1 billion acquisition of MAG Silver represents a modest 27% premium but trades at approximately 16-17 times earnings compared to Pan-American's 12 times multiple. The executives indicated they've increased their MAG position following the announcement, speculating that Fresnillo—MAG's joint venture partner at the Juanicipio mine—could potentially make a competing offer given their $1.3 billion cash position. In another consolidation move, Silver47 and Summa Silver are merging in what the executives describe as a "creative transaction" that will create better scale and improve access to passive fund flows, with year-round exploration capabilities.Q1 reporting from major gold producers shows strong cash generation, with gold prices increasing approximately 12% from Q1 to Q2. This price improvement could translate to 30-35% growth in free cash flow for efficient operators. The executives highlighted AngloGold Ashanti as potentially undervalued, producing 720,000 ounces in Q1 with all-in sustaining costs of $1,640 per ounce. Despite generating roughly 30-50% less free cash flow than Agnico Eagle, AngloGold has only about half the market capitalization.K92 Mining was singled out as an exceptional growth opportunity, with funded expansion plans to increase production from 180,000 to approximately 400,000 gold equivalent ounces annually. At its current $2 billion market cap, K92 could potentially generate a 35% cash flow yield once Phase 4 is complete. The executives emphasize free cash flow (CFO + CFI) as the most reliable metric for evaluating mining companies, providing investors with a framework for analyzing companies in the current environment of elevated metal prices.Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

In this episode of CFI's Member Spotlight, we sit down with Celine Chaabani, a CFI learner and recent graduate. She candidly shares how she went from avoiding finance to actively pursuing a career in capital markets and credit analysis.Celine originally studied general management and had little interest in finance. But her curiosity grew after watching friends trade stocks and exploring the markets independently. That curiosity led her to CFI's Capital Markets & Securities Analyst (CMSA®) program. This turning point helped her understand how markets move, what drives volatility, and where she might fit in.Through short-term internships in credit, investment banking, and macro research, Celine quickly determined what she liked (and didn't like). Now, she's wrapping up her Master's in Financial Markets, eyeing future roles in credit and alternatives, and preparing to pursue her CFA and CAIA. This conversation is valuable for anyone considering a transition into finance without a traditional background.
A pilot with many hours of experience and an instructor rating died following the bad decision to fly his newly purchased airplane without first understanding how the aircraft systems operate. He also did not review the logbooks or have the plane looked over after 10 years sitting idle. The pilot had purchased a Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche. Key facts in the NTSB report and public docket show that the pilot did not have a pre-buy inspection, was not familiar with the aircraft's systems, and ignored the advice of his friend and former CFI to not fly.The pilot knew about a landing gear indication light problem before takeoff. He proceeded without resolving it or reviewing the appropriate emergency procedures for operating the landing gear. The plane stalled and crashed while he tried to troubleshoot the issue in flight. In this analysis with John Goglia and Todd Curtis, Greg Feith shares that he is currently in the process of buying a used airplane. Like the accident pilot, the aircraft has not flown in several years. Unlike the accident pilot, he is working closely with an experienced mechanic to make the aircraft airworthy and to examine all systems on the aircraft.Greg is frustrated with the quality of the decisions made by the pilot before and during the flight. He's further critical of the NTSB's analysis of this accident. The probable cause statement focuses on a stall that happened at the end of the flight rather than all the pilot actions before and during the flight.“[The NTSB probably cause statement is] so vanilla. It is such a cop-out,” Greg says. This accident is a result of poor aeronautical decision-making by the pilot and the actions of others around the pilot who failed to assert proper safety practices. In this podcast we talk about the 70/50 rule for determining takeoff performance. The rule says, "if I don't have 70% of the required speed by the halfway point of the runway, I should abort the takeoff". Is this a myth? Does it hold true? If you do have the speed, does it mean you should go? Let's discuss on this episode of The Finer Points, Fly Your Best!
We speak with a KC-135 pilot and licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic who runs a business specializing in aircraft maintenance, avionics upgrades, and aircraft management. In the news, budget cuts at NOAA's Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Office, a ruling in the so-called “toxic uniform” lawsuit against American Airlines, wildlife hazards, the Swiss Global 7500 aircraft, ATC retirement age, and Air Force restrictions on pregnant pilots. He is also an active KC-135 Stratotanker pilot with the Tennessee Air National Guard who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in December 2024. James holds a CFI, A&P with Inspection Authorization (IA), and Seaplane ratings (ASES, AMEL, ASEL). He has over 1,000 flight hours in a range of aircraft, from the KC-135 Stratotanker to a Cessna 140, and holds type ratings in the Boeing 707, Boeing 720, Beechjet 400, and Mitsubishi MU-300. James graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Maintenance Management. In our conversation, James describes flying the KC-135 Stratotanker in a night-time combat mission and experiencing a loss of electrical power. He and his crew managed to compensate and return safely to base. We also look at how he started his aircraft maintenance business, the type of work performed, and his commitment to a high-level white-glove service. James' aircraft maintenance company works primarily on Cirrus airplanes, and he is also a Diamond Aircraft authorized service center, an Epic service center, and a Garmin avionics dealer. Seaplane discovery rides and ICON A5 training are offered through Iconic Air & Sea Adventures. James also produces the The James Spearman Show podcast. When your CFI asks for your name and you respond with "standby" – you're experiencing what pilots call a helmet fire. In this episode, Ben, Brian, and Ted dive into the phenomenon of task saturation that affects pilots at every level, from Ben's instrument approach adventures where he made what sounded like "Charlie Brown's teacher" over the radio, to Ted's coastal flight where turning back was the smartest option. The crew shares practical strategies for extinguishing these cognitive infernos: slowing down both mentally and physically, asking for delay vectors, and constantly thinking ahead by asking "what are the next two things?" They discuss how flying with other pilots can increase pressure, why preparation is critical, and how everyone from students to seasoned pilots can recover when they fall behind the airplane. Plus, updates on the upcoming T82 fly-in (80 attendees, 39 aircraft!), community milestone celebrations, and a reminder that, as Wendell Geek says, "helmet fires are like exercise – they suck in the moment, but in the long run they make you stronger."Mentioned on the show:* VLD - Valdosta Georgia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valdosta_Regional_Airport* The Underbelly Project: https://viralart.vandalog.com/read/chapter/the-underbelly-project/* The Towering Inferno: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Towering_Inferno* M02 - Dickson County Airport, Tenn: https://www.airnav.com/airport/M02* the Dixie Dregs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Dregs* L.P. Confusion is a major barrier for alt-meat companies struggling to gain traction with shoppers — confusion about healthfulness, ingredients, labels. Add to that a disconnect between consumer expectation and reality on matters of taste and texture. In short, consumers don't trust the information they're getting. Trust in the food system is what the Center for Food Integrity is all about, and CFI has new data that segments consumers by levels of trust, in their food and in the players in the food industry. From the “progressive disruptor” to the “comfort seekers,” Charlie Arnot, CEO of CFI, has studied these micro-communities. He knows who they listen to, and why — drawing a road map for alt-meat companies to build brand relationships with their end-users.
In this special episode of CFI's FinPod, we're joined by our co-founder Scott Powell and founder of “The FP&A Guy,” Paul Barnhurst, to explore how AI, automation, and evolving skill sets reshape careers in FP&A, capital markets, and investment banking. We discuss how tools like ChatGPT are already changing workflows, why Python and Excel are still essential to your skill set, how to stand out in the hiring process, and what finance professionals need to thrive by 2030.
Opportunity can come in many shapes and in unexpected places. Today's guest, Jeff Ash, PhD, chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md., tells a very compelling story about how he was given an opportunity that set the stage for his now-illustrious career. Having had a somewhat circuitous career path as a young academic, Dr. Ash describes how he was given a break because someone saw him as a whole person. Today, with more than 25 years of academia in the University of Maryland system under his belt, Dr. Ash walks the walk when it comes to his philosophy on fair, equitable opportunities and why he is often more impressed with a lower GPA than by a 4.0. His keen insights, wisdom, and guidance in conversation with Susan Ryan in this episode are especially timely and essential. Prioritizing people, no matter their race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or age, is a core tenet of the Center for Innovation as we create communities of belonging, where individuals are seen as whole people with intrinsic worth, and our shared humanity enables all to live, grow, and thrive. Welcome to the Triple P Life Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Jay LaGuardia welcomes Michael Reddington, a certified forensic interviewer (CFI) and the author of "The Disciplined Listening Method." Michael shares his expertise in applying strategic observation and persuasive communication skills to uncover hidden value in high-stakes conversations. Drawing from his experience in investigations and teaching interrogation techniques, Michael explains how leaders, negotiators, sales professionals, and HR personnel can effectively navigate challenging interactions to achieve desired outcomes. Episode Takeaways: The ability to find common ground is crucial for successful communication, regardless of the context or the person you're speaking with. Illustrating your understanding of a situation before investigating the problem and seeking accountability can help reduce resistance and encourage open communication. Using the word "you" in conversations can be dangerous, as it may trigger defensiveness and hinder progress. Instead, make illustrative statements to demonstrate your understanding without assigning blame. When faced with a "brick wall" in a conversation, work with it instead of against it. Avoid arguing rationally against emotional problems, and instead, try to understand the underlying issues and find a way forward together. Leaders must consistently provide evidence of their trustworthiness through their actions and follow-through. Failing to do so can lead to a breakdown in trust and a decline in team performance. Deciding when to have a "no BS conversation" depends on the context and totality of circumstances. Factors to consider include the clarity of expectations, the resources provided, the magnitude of the issue, and the level of support given. Effective communication is a skill set that can be learned and developed, whether in business or personal relationships. Focusing on desired outcomes and putting emotions aside can help generate the results you seek. Tom Pinit's path to becoming a pilot was anything but conventional. As the son of Thai immigrants, he grew up believing he couldn't be a pilot due to vision requirements. After working in corporate consulting and land conservation, a layoff in 2019 pushed him to take a calculated risk: pursuing his dream of flying. With the unwavering support of his wife, Tom decided to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. He started flight training at a Part 141 school, only to face another roadblock when the school shut down during the pandemic. He adapted—working at an FBO, becoming a CFI, flying aerial survey, and building hours however he could. Even after earning his ATP-CTP, job rejections kept coming. But he didn't give up. Now, he flies a Cessna Citation for a medical transport charter, where he plays a crucial role in life-saving missions, flying surgeons to retrieve organs under intense time constraints and challenging weather conditions. Tom's story is one of persistence, adaptability, and the sacrifices required to turn a passion into a career. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How Tom transitioned from corporate work to aviation The struggles of flight training during the pandemic and how he adapted What it's like to fly medical transport and the critical role pilots play in saving lives The challenges of weather, diversions, and time-sensitive missions in organ transport The reality of applying to aviation jobs and handling rejection Why perseverance, networking, and taking calculated risks can make all the difference Tom's journey proves that setbacks are just detours—if you're willing to keep flying forward. #Aviation #AviationCareers #pilotcareer #pilottips #pilotcareertips #aviationcrew #AviationJobs #AviationLeadership #flying #PilotSuccess #pilotpodcast #PilotPreparation #Pilotrecruitment #AviationEducation #AviationOpportunities #AviationPodcast #flyingtips #AirlineInterviewPrep #PilotDevelopment #PilotFinance #PilotExperience #PilotTraining

Ed is the author of the book In Freedom We Trust: An Atheist Guide to Religious Liberty, as well as the Substack blog Letters to a Free Country, where he recently posted a piece responding to my article “Biology is not Ethics” about the conflict around FFRF and Jerry Coyne's piece "Biology is not Bigotry". We discuss Ed's objections to my accusing Coyne of arguing for bigotry and discrimination, his refusal to use "they" as a singlar pronoun, and a variety of other topics related to trans-activism in secular spaces. What is a Woman?: https://freethoughtnow.org/what-is-a-woman/Biology is not Bigotry reposted unedited at CFI's Free Inquiry magazine: https://secularhumanism.org/exclusive/biology-is-not-bigotry/Biology is not Ethics: https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/biology-is-not-ethics-a-responseFirst Person In-Trans-itive Tense? Max talks with Jim Goldfuss about his journey from a career in logistics and retail to fulfilling his dream of flying professionally with PlaneSense, a fractional aircraft ownership company. Growing up around aviation, Jim earned his private pilot's license in 1989 but paused his flying ambitions due to financial constraints. Decades later, with stable finances and family support, he resumed training, earning his instrument rating, commercial license, and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate between 2020 and 2022. Jim credits his time as a CFI with sharpening his aviation skills and communication abilities, which prepared him for his current role. He joined PlaneSense after a year-long application process, leveraging persistence and networking to stand out. At PlaneSense, Jim flies Pilatus PC-12s as a second-in-command, alternating legs with captains and handling preflight, avionics programming, and monitoring tasks. He praises the company's culture, advanced equipment, and comprehensive training. Jim's work involves a mix of short flights in the Northeast and longer legs to destinations like Florida and the Rockies. He aims to become a captain and potentially join the training department. Jim emphasizes the importance of networking for aspiring pilots pursuing their aviation dreams. If you're getting value from this show, please support the show via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or Patreon.
