Pocket Protector began as the solo project of Brooklyn indie scene veteran Joe Reichel (Howth, Robot Princess, MiniBoone) before the addition of drummer (and Brooklyn Drum Collective creator) Carlo Minchillo and bassist/photographer Mike Petzinger (of Meansiders). Reichel’s hooky, melodic songs and honest lyrics take the best of punk and indie rock to make for a catchy good time. Independent Venue Week is a festival that began in the UK in 2014. This year it spreads to the states with StereoactiveNYC and BTRtoday presenting its New York City showcase at Pianos on Thursday July 12th. The bill features plenty of artists who’ve been featured heavily both on the SANYC podcast and the BTRtoday platform generally, along with a couple of artists a bit newer to the mix. One of the artists playing the show is Robot Princess, so we spoke with band members Beau Alessi and Peter Ingles about 3 songs from 3 different points in the band’s musical history as part of a series we do from time to time called “Take 3.” FULL SHOWCASE DETAILS: StereoactiveNYC + BTRtoday Present Independent Venue Week at Pianos // Thursday, July 12th The Night Screams - 11PM Grim Streaker - 10PM Dead Stars - 9PM Gustaf - 8PM Robot Princess - 7PM // upstair: pecas (8:30pm) + Big Bliss (9:15pm) \\ // Doors 6:30PM, $10 \\ //// RSVP on Facebook \\\\ 00:00 - // StereoactiveNYC / BTRtoday ID // 00:40 - // Welcome / About Independent Venue Week // 05:48 - “Big Picture” - The Night Screams 08:00 - “Babysitter” (BTR Live Studio, 2017) - Grim Streaker 09:56 - “Fortune” (BTR Live Studio, 2017) - Big Bliss 12:24 - “Calm Punk” (BTR Live Studio, 2015) - Dead Stars 15:25 - “Packaged vs. Product” (demo) - Gustaf 18:28 - “Matchstick” - pecas 21:01 - // Independent Venue Week cont’d / Robot Princess // 24:30 - “Flavor Country” - Robot Princess 28:40 - // TAKE 3: Robot Princess, the beginnings of the band // 38:12 - “Wake Me Up When Everyone Is Dead” - Robot Princess 40:53 - // TAKE 3: Robot Princess, continued // 58:33 - “Claudia” - Robot Princess 62:24 - // TAKE 3: Robot Princess, continued // 78:16 - “Marky Moon” - Robot Princess 82:04 - // TAKE 3: Robot Princess, continued // 95:27 - // Outro + Disclaimer // 96:57 - // Finish.
There’s a lot of excellent new music out by Brooklyn artists this April. In fact, you can attend release shows three nights in a row from Thursday, April 26th, through Saturday, April 28th for three different artists you can hear in this episode of the podcast. This is your first chance to hear a new track off of Parlor Walls’ new EP, EXO, anywhere on the BTR network. Additionally, we have tracks from Gracie Mansion’s new EP and Robot Princess’ new album available here for the first time anywhere. And you can download one of those Gracie Mansion tracks, “Backback,” right here from us. Producer's Note: Apologies to Gracie Mansion for getting one of their song titles wrong. It's called "Starling," not "Own Thing," as said in the episode. 00:00 - // StereoactiveNYC / BTRtoday ID // 00:40 - // Welcome // 01:47 - // BTR Premieres from Parlor Walls, Gracie Mansion, Robot Princess // 03:59 - “Low Vulture” - Parlor Walls (EXO single) 07:22 - “Cover Me” (BTR Live Studio, 2017) - Parlor Walls 10:44 - “What’s Your Basement” (BTR Live Studio, 2018) - Russian Baths 12:59 - “Scrub It” (BTR Live Studio, 2018) - Russian Baths 15:34 - // Parlor Walls’ ‘EXO’ EP and release show // 17:20 - // 2 exclusive premiere tracks from Gracie Mansion // 19:40 - “Backback” - Gracie Mansion 24:42 - "Starling" - Gracie Mansion 28:08 - “23 19” (Serious Business, 2013) - pow wow! 31:35 - // Gracie Mansion exclusive track download + release show // 36:58 - “Toxoplasmosis” - Robot Princess 40:55 - “Marky Moon” - Robot Princess 44:43 - “Flavor Country” - Robot Princess 49:00 - “Turing” - Mount Sharp 52:29 - // 2 exclusive tracks from Robot Princess’ ‘Apocalypse and Bullshit’ LP + release show // 58:30 - “The Instrument” - Wye Oak 61:47 - “Over and Over” - Wye Oak 64:29 - “Walkie Talkie” - Palm 67:00 - “Trying” - Palm // Shadow Expert, 2017 69:31 - // Outro + Disclaimer // 71:01 - // Finish.

The New Restaurants is a Brooklyn-based band led by longtime friends Beau Alessi and Doug Schrashun, two veterans of the NYC/Brooklyn music scene -- perhaps best known for their involvement in MiniBoone and Robot Princess. With a new website (as opposed to an album) available now on Bandcamp and soon at forgetabout.institute, the duo talk about their history together (which includes writing NBA All Star Jams eleven years running) as well as their unique way of writing music for this latest project. Also in the episode, we have music by c’yotes, Metz, and Deerhoof. 00:00 - // StereoactiveNYC / BTRtoday ID // 00:16 - // Welcome // 00:57 - // c’yotes // 03:41 - “Thievery” - c’yotes 05:39 - “Nothing Left” - c’yotes 08:57 - // Beau Alessi + Doug Schrashun (The New Restaurants) 14:29 - // Interview begins // 15:19 - // How did they get to know each other? // 18:00 - // NBA All Star Jams // 21:13 - // Humor in music and finding a balance // 26:51 - // The aesthetic or tone of The New Restaurants / satire? // 30:24 - // Next steps / live version of the band // 32:04 - // Facebook // 33:24 - // Writing process // 36:21 - // Doug songs vs. Beau songs / collaboration // 38:45 - // About “Celebrity Cruises" // 39:23 - “Celebrity Cruises” - The New Restaurants 42:27 - // More about writing // 44:43 - // Doug song? // 47:35 - “Tropical Contact High” - The New Restaurants 50:42 - // Translating recorded versions of songs to live versions // 53:19 - // Trying to avoid the comparison game / influences, etc. // 60:08 - // What’s next for The New Restaurants? // 63:03 - “Color Me Vegan” - The New Restaurants 65:31 - // Mic Break // 67:38 - “Get Off” (Serious Business, 2012) - Metz 69:45 - “Headache” (Serious Business, 2012) - Metz 71:46 - “I Will Spite Survive” (feat.
