I'm thrilled to welcome British singer-songwriter Jo Hill onto Léim Thart with her stunning debut album, girlhood. The album is a testament to Jo's exceptional songwriting prowess, drawing inspiration from iconic legends like Queen, Boney M, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Joni Mitchell, while also echoing the influence of contemporary acts such as Big Thief, Remi Wolf, and Kacey Musgraves. She brought me through the highlights of the album, going independent, connecting with her audience, 2025 plans, and even an unexpected Arabic lesson! girlhood. is a captivating blend of timeless and current sounds that has received multiple spins from BBC Radio 1 and a recent play from Elton John on his Rocket Hour Apple Music show.Watch this episode on YouTube HEREFollow Ruairí Egan / Léim Thart HERE

Adrianne Lenker is a singer and songwriter. She's the lead singer of the critically acclaimed and beloved band Big Thief, and her work as a solo artist is also critically acclaimed and beloved. Her most recent solo album, Bright Future, was named one of the best albums of 2024 by the New Yorker, Stereogum, and more, and it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album. It was co-produced by Adrianne and longtime collaborator Phil Weinrobe. And I talked to the two of them about the making of one of my favorite songs from it, “Sadness As a Gift.”For more, visit songexploder.net/adrianne-lenker.

I learned a new word during this interview you're about to hear with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker and the deeply under appreciated singer-songwriter Tucker Zimmerman: Numinous. It means “having a strong religious or spiritual quality; indicating or suggesting the presence of a divinity.” Numinous. That's how Tucker described the experience of recording the album Dance of Love, with Big Thief as his backing band, and the album's producer. Released in October, Dance of Love is a collection of absolutely gorgeous folk tunes, written and amassed by Tucker over many, many years. It's beauty derives not only from what is actually on the album, but also from the spirit behind it — of kindred creative souls finding each other, across generations, across international miles, to make something gentle and singular and true. About twelve minutes into the interview, Adrianne tells the story of how she first heard Tucker's 1980 album Square Dance while getting a tattoo in Colorado. She was instantly mesmerized, and introduced his music to her Big Thief bandmates. They were all baffled that they'd never heard of him before, baffled that he wasn't more well-known, in general. Now 83 years old, Tucker began releasing albums back in 1969, and there are so many treasures to be discovered in his extensive catalog since then. In addition to discussing the collaboration and how it happened, they each share how they first connected with their own creativity as a child, and I couldn't help but notice how profoundly their current artistic approach carries the long reverberation of their first, naive awareness of their creative side. It was a joy to get these two back together (along with Tucker's wife, Marie Claire, who has a cameo at the beginning) for a conversation I feel honored to have witnessed. Tucker will be on tour in early 2025. Get tickets here. Adrianne's latest solo album, Bright Future, is nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys with more than a hundred years of music-making experience between them and the endless stories to match: Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti. You'll be forgiven if you don't recognize Tucker Zimmerman's name: The songwriter existed on the fringes of the folk scene in the late 1960s but in spite of acclaim from fellow musicians—including David Bowie, as you'll hear—he never broke out. That may be because Zimmerman left America for Belgium, where he's continued to quietly create music and write for the past 40 years. But you can only keep a secret like Zimmerman for so long, and Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker happened to hear one of his records a couple of year ago and was inspired enough that one thing led to another and Big Thief ended up creating an entire record with Zimmerman called Dance of Love, which came out earlier this year. It's an odd, beautiful collaboration that's well worth checking out. In fact, check out “Burial At Sea” from Dance of Love right here; it features Lenker and Zimmerman's voices together. The other half of today's conversation is a legendary musician and producer who also had a lot to do with bringing Tucker Zimmerman into the public consciousness. Tony Visconti is best known for his many, many collaborations with David Bowie, with whom he worked closely over Bowie's entire career. Visconti has also produced records for T. Rex, Morrissey, Sparks, and way more others than I have time to list here. But for purposes of this conversation, we need to note that he helped created Zimmerman's Ten Songs album back in 1968, which they get into in this chat. They've stayed in touch over the years, and you'll hear the affection in their voices. Speaking of voices, the third person who pops up briefly in this chat is Tucker's wife Marie Claire, who also appears on the cover of Dance of Love and contributes some vocals. Elsewhere in this conversation, Tucker and Tony talk about their early adventures together, include an acid trip facilitated by a guy named Dr. Sam. They chat about Bowie, of course, and Tucker gets a chance to thank Tony for helping him out over the years—and how he's glad Tony didn't agree to produce an ABBA record when he had the chance. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti for chatting. WNXP's Record of the Week is The Academy by Lutalo. The Vermont-based songwriter who has ties to Big Thief was initially cast as an indie folk artist but Lutalo says this album was meant to shrug off those limitations. Playing every instrument, they show off a masterful command of multiple styles and genres to tell crucial, and often heartbreaking, stories of their first quarter of life while also making commentary on consumerism and politics in a way that never feels preachy. The week before the release, Lutalo joined us to share some reflections on the album and insight into how a particular Nashville-based artist gave them a peek into what was possible as an artist of color in the overwhelmingly white world of indie music.
Musician Tucker Zimmerman is a bit of a musical Forrest Gump. In his 83 years he has sipped coffee with the Beats in San Francisco, taught David Bowie how to record in a studio, and now he has made an album with Big Thief. Dance of Love is a freewheeling album that brings intergenerational hippies together into one common feeling.

Loss, Love, and LonelinessGet inspired by Bob Sumner. Who melds those "3 L's" into a powerful Countrypolitan Album coming soon called called Some Place To Rest Easy. It's a mix of country and ambient music that combines the classic sound of Randy Travis with the heartfelt lyrics of Big Thief's Adrienne Lenker, blending old and new styles.Bob's goal is simple: bring something real. Whether it's lifting your spirits or making you think, Bob's music make a difference. Tune in to hear more about his amazing journey and his new album!-----Bob grew up in a small town called White Rock, British Columbia, just a hop across the border from the U.S.Bob's musical journey started with his family. His grandpa was a jazz guitarist who played gigs on the side, and his mom grew up playing gospel music on the piano. But the biggest influence on Bob was his brother. Together, they were known as the Sumner Brothers and made music for over 20 years, always trying new things and pushing boundaries.---You'll also discover:The Sounds of Countrypolitan Music, Explained. The Intense Story Behind his Music. How a Fun Dance Went Viral. The Feedback and Insights He Receives from his Audience.Origin of “Dublin Blues”.The Rules of Playing the Bluebird Cafe.A Colorful Road Trip Story.Bob Sumner Festival Lineup.Learn more about Bob here: https://bobsumnermusic.com/
There's no denying Buck Meek's integral role in one of the buzziest contemporary indie bands in the world. But Meek's solo work pushes his artistry beyond the bounds of Big Thief. His third solo effort Haunted Mountain is arguably Meek's most ambitious work yet. His sweet, warbly vocals highlight his impressive storytelling and somehow shine through deeply textured musical arrangements complete with big Meek riffs. The contrast shouldn't work, but his ability to fill space in unique ways is unmatched. His modern approach to country-rock is refreshing and proves why Meek is becoming one of the most revered musicians of his genre.Watch Meek perform “Haunted Mountain,” “Paradise” and “Where You're Coming From” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.

Meet Sofia Wolfson, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, writer, and Fretboard Journal contributor who just released an incredible album called 'Imposing on a Hometown.' This project features a bunch of former Fretboard Journal subjects and contributors, including Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Mason Stoops, and Harrison Whitford. Mostly though, it's a collection of great songs by an incredibly talented guitar fanatic. During our chat, we talk about growing up in LA (and the unique venues that helped shape Sofia's music community), the beauty of the Gibson J-45, working at LA's famed Old Style Guitar Shop (where Reuben Cox famously makes rubber bridge guitar mods and started a mini-movement), the making of 'Imposing,' the influence of Margaret Glaspy and so much more. The Brother Brothers are identical twins who have released 5 records together, as well as touring/collaborating with Courtney Marie Andrews, Lake Street Dive, Big Thief, Sarah Jarosz, Keb Mo and being part of the early incarnations of Hadestown the musical. We chat with them about how authenticity lasts in this industry, the theory that everyone (musician/artist) just needs autonomy and validation, following the momentum, economics, and we share some good old tour horror stories.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:The Brother BrothersAmericanaFestAnais MitchellHadestownEp 10 - Joe PugEp 12 - Leyla McCallaStephane GrappelliTaylor SwiftZach BryanLevi TurnerClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Angie McMahon is one of those artists that stops you in your tracks. She caught my attention back in 2017 with 'Slow Mover' and immediately I was asking, who is this? A debut album followed, then a few years later the follow up. And her second album has taken Angie into another realm, selling big iconic rooms like the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne's Forum several times over.I've wanted to Take 5 with Angie for a while, and the ideas around her latest album seemed perfect for exploration. Light, Dark, Light Again is about cycles, and I wondered which songs had the sense of revolution for her. From Bon Iver to Big Thief, this is a rich conversation about the very pulse of life, the cycles we go through, and the music that helps us through.Bon Iver - 8 (circle)Sara Bareilles - Once Upon Another TimeJoni Mitchell - Circle Game (live at Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles 1974)Janelle Monáe - TurntablesBig Thief – Not

LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL is an intimate documentary portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s LA – Judee Sill. It charts her life from a troubled adolescence of addiction, armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death. In two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. As told by David Geffen, Linda Ronstadt, JD Souther, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash -- along with Judee herself -- the film explores Judee's unique musical style and the inspiring recent rediscovery of her singular music fostered by Shawn Colvin, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief, and Weyes Blood. Co-directors Brian Lindstrom and Andy Brown join us for a conversation how they discovered this nearly forgotten artist, their search for archival material on Judee Sill, finding the “right” way to tell her story, and connecting with wide array of artist, young and older who have been inspired by Judee's enduring work. Adrianne Lenker feels things deeply. You hear it in every one of her songs, whether solo, or with her band Big Thief. Lucky for us, she shares it all, and over the past few years has become one of the most promising and prolific songwriters around; making 6 albums on her own and 5 with her band. Her latest is “Bright Future” and it's another stunning record of genius songwriting, and the inspiration for me to head back into the Take 5 archives and share this wonderful conversation from 2019.At the time, Adrianne was actually on holiday in Australia and it felt fitting, because her life had been a transient one, constantly on the road touring all over the world. But even when taking a break, she made time to share a conversation about music. This ended up being so much more. It's about connection, about how melancholy can filter through joy, and how you can find space in the most intensely crowded of sounds. Even if you don't know Adrianne's work intimately, this is a conversation that will speak to you. It's one I haven't stopped thinking about since. It feels like, for Adrianne, music has always helped her understand the world around her. When she speaks about songs, everything slows down. She has a way of articulating what is often intangible, and when I watch interviews with her I find I'm drawn in to a kind of meditative state – she just has a way of seeing the world that is captivating. For all of these reasons, back in 2019 I asked her to Take 5. Her music gets under my skin, and I wanted to find out what got under hers. Dive in for this unforgettable and poetic conversation.Sibylle Baier – DrivingBill Callahan – What Comes After CertaintyIthaca – Impulse CrushSheer Mag – Point BreezeLife Without Buildings – Sorrow

Jolie Holland is a world-renowned Los Angeles-based artist who has forged a timeless, captivating musical legacy mining the depths of her, at times harrowing, life experiences. Her fearless creative choices are rooted in honesty and presence. She is a co-founder of the musical trio The Be Good Tanyas and has been featured on Bob Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour" Jolie was raised as a fourth-generation Jehovah's Witness, and her music inherently carries emotional themes inextricable from her cult experience. These concepts of cult dynamics are subtly woven throughout her newly released album Haunted Mountain, including on the mesmerizing title track, a duet with Buck Meek, guitarist for the band Big Thief. In this very special episode, Jolie breaks down the emotional themes of her new record and explains how the cultic dynamics she sees in the world inform her perspective and work. She outlines the patriarchal and harmful teachings she experienced herself being raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and how the aftereffects permeate her creative expression. You know Buck from Big Thief and his solo albums, like this year's Haunted Mountain. Full of near-death experiences and tender but insistent roots-inspired songwriting, it's an album that finds inspiration in the mysterious Mount Shasta, long a site of high strangeness—and a place that plays a pivotal role in Buck's own origin story. Cut live to 2”-inch tape, it's a personal and open-hearted record and we're so glad to have Buck here with us, hanging out and discussing Judee Sill, Bob Dylan–but not his work with Bob Dylan, thanks to one of those pesky NDAs, the autonomy preserving creative practices of Adrianne Lenker and Big Thief, working with fellow Texan Jolie Holland—who's also got her own Haunted Mountain album—and the power of reciprocity. Speaking of reciprocity, Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions is brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard's Patreon community. Join us over there and help support independent media. This week it was reported that Ed Droste of the fine art-rock band Grizzly Bear is now working as a therapist (:25). That this was news at all speaks to the weird navieté that we as indie-rock fans have about the financial realities of the musicians we love. Steven and Ian begin the episode by talking about the "Joe jobs" of indie-rock lifers, and the potential "indie star to therapist" pipe line. From there, the guys talk about Steven's recent column on the best soundtrack albums of all-time, and why the golden age for soundtracks is from the mid-'80s to the early '00s. While it's true that a big film like Barbie can still spin off a successful soundtrack, the golden age of B and C-tier soundtracks — when an otherwise forgotten film like 1993's Judgment Night can be paired with a famous soundtrack — seems to be over (11:08).After that, Steven and Ian review new albums by hardcore collective The Armed and the Chicago guitar-pop band Ratboys (27:39). In Recommendation Corner (56:01), Ian praises the bloghouse throwback DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ and Steven gives the nod to the new solo album from Big Thief guitarist Buck Meek.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
