This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) enter their showgirl era with the ultimate lesbian cowgirl diva, Brooke Eden (@brookeedenmusic), and talk about why the 2002 Oscar-winning movie-musical, Chicago, Should've Been Gay. Chicago is a millennial casting wet-dream with Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Mýa and a tragically underutilized Lucy Liu. If you haven't seen the movie (or the 1975 stage show it's based on– hot take but the movie is better), it's essentially Orange is the New Black: The Musical. Although Chicago puts our stars Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly into the overtly heteronormative world of the 1920s, there is little to no hetero explanation for 99% of the plot. The story is set in a time period when people could end up in jail just for being gay, so it honestly does not surprise us that Queen Latifah is essentially running a lesbian harem on Murderesses Row. Sure, these specific women are in jail because they killed their husbands (and side-pieces), but is that not the gayest reason to be in jail? In fact, we reckon Murderesses Row functions like a 1920s HER. If we had a choice between marrying a man or killing said man, going to jail and getting to hook up with Velma freaking Kelly, call us Piper Chapman because we're skipping GO and doing the Cell Block Tango. As you know, I've been rather obsessed with the music of Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and that obsession doesn't seem to be fading anytime soon.  So you can imagine my delight when I discovered that Tim Story, who joins me on this episode of the podcast, played a major role in creating the remarkable record that's captivated me lately — 90.   To make that album, Tim sifted through over 100 hours of unreleased material from Roedelius's archives — a monumental effort that resulted in this stunning compilation of tracks. Readers at Delayed may be aware of our pilgrimages upstate to our home away from home. The long weekends away at a place we affectionately call the ‘Barn' serve as a mental recharge, and rejuvenation of creative inspiration, not to mention time spent together with close friends. During one of last years' editions, we were grateful to spend time with Lisbon based artist, Verena aka Ena B. Her passion for music, and penchant for creating ethereal vocal ambient tracks all contributed to a fit in with our crew of fellow music nerds and producers. Marking a new chapter in her musical career, Ena's forthcoming self release teases a darker, techno edge. She forgoes the light, melodic pads of the past and dives into the depths of a grittier, harder sound. Fernweh, our premiere for today is a slow burner, building tension with every beat. The kicks and spacey textures laying the groundwork for a swelling crescendo of synths later. A moment that would be right gracing any club or dimly lit room, full to the brim with writhing bodies. Building on these themes is a 5 track offering titled, ‘Nightwalk' that will be out soon via Mexican imprint Secuencias Temporales. We love mess just as much as the next gays; and season 2 really went off the rails in ways that were at best hilarious and at worst downright unsettling (like, we hope Netflix paid for their therapy unsettling). This extreme level of messiness adds an authenticity to the cast that actually feels like a move in the right direction for queer representation. They're not the usual sanitized “love-is-love” mainstream gays. Instead the cast are real queer people, appearing as they are, un-healed trauma, complicated families and all. And we think their bravery deserves a lot of credit. For over two decades, she has been guiding voices and hearts through community singing, classes, and workshops in Eugene, Oregon and beyond. Karly's journey in Oregon began with a formative chapter at Lost Valley Educational Center, where she immersed herself in personal growth workshops and forged lasting connections. With a background in dance and a degree in the field, she co-founded Coalessence Dance, an ecstatic dance community that continues to thrive, with Becca Perry in 2006. Karly's love for community singing deepened through her many years at Singing Alive, where she led song circles and found inspiration among fellow songleaders from the gathering's inception through 2023. In 2013, she founded the Hummingbirds Girls Choir, whose joyful harmonies became a beloved feature at the Eugene Saturday Market, Holiday Market, and the Oregon Country Fair. In 2015, Karly launched Singing Heart, a community singing group, which inspired her to complete the Community Choir Leadership Training in British Columbia the following year. Singing Heart is proud to be part of the Ubuntu Choirs Network, affirming the principle that everyone can sing and that singing builds connection. Karly's often playful, layered, and meaningful original songs are sung by songleaders from Appalachia to Ireland. What Is Christian Nationalism? - Episode 599 - Voices in my Head (the Rick Lee James Podcast) Whenever Christians fuse the cross with the flag, we lose our prophetic voice that allows us to call the nation(s) to repentance and justice. This fusion of the church with an idolatrous ideology makes the body of Christ captive to political powers and parties. In doing so, the church abdicates its true allegiance to Jesus and surrenders its freedom to serve him as Lord. The Church cannot serve two masters. I have been posting often about the dangers of Christian nationalism because it is so different from the way of Jesus and it is not a fringe ideology anymore. Jesus invited people into the kingdom through table fellowship, accepting invitations and offering his own. He never forced belief or grasped for power. The kingdom of God is never advanced by violence toward others, but through self-giving, radical love, even to the point of suffering, so that no harm is done to another. At the heart of his teaching is love for enemies, not domination over them. Some people respond to posts like this by saying they have never met a Christian nationalist. The reality is that Christian nationalism often shows itself less in individuals wearing a label and more in movements, policies, and rhetoric. One example is the Seven Mountain Theory, which teaches that Christians should dominate areas like government, education, media, and the arts. In our own time, we see this vision advanced through proposals like Project 2025, through leaders such as Russell Vought and Lance Wallnau, and in public policies that aim to insert compulsory religious content into schools or reshape government around explicitly Christian norms. This is not the way of Christ. His kingdom is built not on control but on love, welcome, mercy, and even love for those who oppose us. And even while I write about these things, it is important to say that Christian nationalists themselves are not the enemy. They are my baptized brothers and sisters. But even if they were the enemy, which I do not consider them to be, the call of Jesus is to love our enemies and live a better way.
