I thought it would be fun to do a year-in-review of the music of 2024 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we're constantly sharing music with each other. James first came on the show in 2020, when we did a similar review of the music from that wild quarantine year when artists weren't touring and we all missed live shows. Fast forward to 2024, and we chat about what we've noticed over the last five years, including the changes in the music industry, trends we've seen, and of course, what we've had on repeat.James, a Bob Dylan super-fan, talks about his evolving tastes, new genres, and how pop and hyperpop have influenced his music choices. He also shares his insights on the current music scene and the role of streaming, social media, and live performances.James is an author, poet, artist, and founder of Sunflower Club, a global community dedicated to conscious creativity. He's the author of several books, including The Art of You, which we discussed last year. Why do we overlook insects so often? In this show we decided to focus on insects for a change. Our guest Alex Hill is doing his PhD research on human insect relationships. We discuss why people including animal advocates and vegans do not consider insects much at all. We have a short quiz on insects, we talk about the threat of insect extinction and look into the details about different species of insects. I learned a new word during this interview you're about to hear with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker and the deeply under appreciated singer-songwriter Tucker Zimmerman: Numinous. It means “having a strong religious or spiritual quality; indicating or suggesting the presence of a divinity.” Numinous. That's how Tucker described the experience of recording the album Dance of Love, with Big Thief as his backing band, and the album's producer. Released in October, Dance of Love is a collection of absolutely gorgeous folk tunes, written and amassed by Tucker over many, many years. It's beauty derives not only from what is actually on the album, but also from the spirit behind it — of kindred creative souls finding each other, across generations, across international miles, to make something gentle and singular and true. About twelve minutes into the interview, Adrianne tells the story of how she first heard Tucker's 1980 album Square Dance while getting a tattoo in Colorado. She was instantly mesmerized, and introduced his music to her Big Thief bandmates. They were all baffled that they'd never heard of him before, baffled that he wasn't more well-known, in general. Now 83 years old, Tucker began releasing albums back in 1969, and there are so many treasures to be discovered in his extensive catalog since then. In addition to discussing the collaboration and how it happened, they each share how they first connected with their own creativity as a child, and I couldn't help but notice how profoundly their current artistic approach carries the long reverberation of their first, naive awareness of their creative side. It was a joy to get these two back together (along with Tucker's wife, Marie Claire, who has a cameo at the beginning) for a conversation I feel honored to have witnessed. Tucker will be on tour in early 2025. Get tickets here. Adrianne's latest solo album, Bright Future, is nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys with more than a hundred years of music-making experience between them and the endless stories to match: Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti. You'll be forgiven if you don't recognize Tucker Zimmerman's name: The songwriter existed on the fringes of the folk scene in the late 1960s but in spite of acclaim from fellow musicians—including David Bowie, as you'll hear—he never broke out. That may be because Zimmerman left America for Belgium, where he's continued to quietly create music and write for the past 40 years. But you can only keep a secret like Zimmerman for so long, and Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker happened to hear one of his records a couple of year ago and was inspired enough that one thing led to another and Big Thief ended up creating an entire record with Zimmerman called Dance of Love, which came out earlier this year. It's an odd, beautiful collaboration that's well worth checking out. In fact, check out “Burial At Sea” from Dance of Love right here; it features Lenker and Zimmerman's voices together. The other half of today's conversation is a legendary musician and producer who also had a lot to do with bringing Tucker Zimmerman into the public consciousness. Tony Visconti is best known for his many, many collaborations with David Bowie, with whom he worked closely over Bowie's entire career. Visconti has also produced records for T. Rex, Morrissey, Sparks, and way more others than I have time to list here. But for purposes of this conversation, we need to note that he helped created Zimmerman's Ten Songs album back in 1968, which they get into in this chat. They've stayed in touch over the years, and you'll hear the affection in their voices. Speaking of voices, the third person who pops up briefly in this chat is Tucker's wife Marie Claire, who also appears on the cover of Dance of Love and contributes some vocals. Elsewhere in this conversation, Tucker and Tony talk about their early adventures together, include an acid trip facilitated by a guy named Dr. Sam. They chat about Bowie, of course, and Tucker gets a chance to thank Tony for helping him out over the years—and how he's glad Tony didn't agree to produce an ABBA record when he had the chance. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Tucker Zimmerman and Tony Visconti for chatting. Ka mua, ka muri. To walk into the future facing backwards. What exactly does that mean? If you let your imagination explore that idea for a second you might start to get an idea. How do we, specifically pākehā New Zealanders, move into the future with an eye on our history, personal, national, religious etc, to help guide our actions. What implications does this have for how we live? Join Petra Bagust in this episode as she explores the whakatauki of ka mua, ka muri. Petra's first guest is Dr Alistair Reese. Alistair gave the dawn service kauhau/sermon at Waitangi Day 2024 and has a PhD in Theology titled 'Reconciliation and the Quest for Pākehā Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand'. He has a new book out, all about the history of the relationship between Māori and Pākehā (with a specific focus on the church) called He Tatau Pounamu. You can buy a copy here. Petra is also joined by Elliot Collins. Artist, teacher and Dr (another one!), Petra wanted to talk to her friend Elliot to find out what it means to him to live as a treaty partner in day to day life. Sacred Texts: Clip from Dr Alistair Reese's kauhau/sermon delivered during the dawn service at Waitangi 2024 Music: Innerspace by The Apples in Stereo (played at end of Alistair's interview) Treaty by Moana and the Tribe music for indigo by Adrianne Lenker (played during the candle segment) Pepeha by Six60 Frolic by Jake Xerxes Fussell (played at the end of Elliot's interview) Start Somewhere by Courtney Barnett (played to end the episode) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meet Sofia Wolfson, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, writer, and Fretboard Journal contributor who just released an incredible album called 'Imposing on a Hometown.' This project features a bunch of former Fretboard Journal subjects and contributors, including Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Mason Stoops, and Harrison Whitford. Mostly though, it's a collection of great songs by an incredibly talented guitar fanatic. During our chat, we talk about growing up in LA (and the unique venues that helped shape Sofia's music community), the beauty of the Gibson J-45, working at LA's famed Old Style Guitar Shop (where Reuben Cox famously makes rubber bridge guitar mods and started a mini-movement), the making of 'Imposing,' the influence of Margaret Glaspy and so much more. We also talk about Sofia's soon-to-be-published interview with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker in the Fretboard Journal. http://www.sofiawolfson.com/ https://sofiawolfson.bandcamp.com/album/imposing-on-a-hometown Give 'Imposing on a Hometown' a listen and then sit back and hear the story behind it here. Steven and Ian begin this week's episode with a very non-indie rock topic — the story about Bruno Mars owing $50 million to a Las Vegas casino (4:29). They shoehorn a brief Sportscast about the emerging gambling scandal involving Shohei Ohtani, lamenting the bad side effects of gambling while also hoping to get some gambling sponsorships for the Fantasy Albums Draft. Speaking of which: Ian is killing Steven once again in the Fantasy Albums Draft (10:47), and Steven is thinking about firing his general manager (i.e. himself).Next the guys review the new album by Waxahatchee, Tigers Blood, which Steven likes more than Ian (16:36). They also talk about two other big singer-songwriter albums out today, Bright Future by Adrianne Lenker and Bite Down by Rosali (33:46). In the mailbag, a listener asks whether Steven's neighbors like his patio music, and then another listener asks about Indiecast's favorite albums to play on airplanes. In Recommendation Corner (54:32), Ian talks about the new album from Bedbug while Steven recommends the comeback record from Restorations and a new archival concert release from Bruce Springsteen.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 181 here and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
