Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn 1954, white Southern churches declared that school integration “defied God's design.” Seven decades later, many of those congregations champion “color-blindness” instead. What changed—and what hasn't? Historian Rusty Hawkins (Indiana Wesleyan University), co-editor of The Bible Told Them So: How Southern Evangelicals Fought to Preserve White Supremacy, joins Faithful Politics to trace the theological through-line from Jim Crow sermons to modern debates over CRT and DEI. Hawkins explains how pastors and laypeople alike used Scripture to sanctify segregation, then re-branded the same resistance as a fight for “quality education” and “parental choice.” He also argues that today's church can still become a force for racial reconciliation—if it learns from the prophetic witness of the Black church and rejects power for service. Whether you're a pastor, activist, or history buff, this conversation equips you with the receipts—and the hope—to confront racism's religious roots.Guest BioRusty Hawkins is Associate Professor of History at Indiana Wesleyan University, specializing in American religion and race. He co-edited the award-winning The Bible Told Them So and is currently writing a religious biography of Alabama Governor George Wallace. Hawkins's scholarship appears in Christianity Today, the Journal of Southern Religion, and other outlets, making him a leading voice on how evangelical theology has shaped—and been shaped by—America's color line. In this episode, Will sits down with Meredith Sumpter, CEO of FairVote, to unpack one of the most promising reforms in American democracy: ranked choice voting (RCV). With over 800 elections already conducted using RCV and growing bipartisan support in states like Maine and Alaska, this episode explores how RCV reduces negative campaigning, empowers majority rule, and encourages candidates to actually engage with all voters—not just their base.Meredith explains how RCV works, where it's spreading, and why local communities are leading the charge. Can a voting method really make elections more civil? What would it take to implement RCV nationwide? And why are some politicians resisting it, even if their constituents support it?This isn't just a conversation about ballots—it's about restoring faith in the democratic process.

New Yorkers shocked the country last week when they picked a Democratic Socialist TikTok star as the Democratic Party's nominee for mayor. So could a Zohran Mamdani-type phenomenon happen here? Our politics contributor Deep Singh Badhesha joins producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies to talk about how our local politics are different. Plus, a food influencer shared a traumatizing and seemingly racist experience at Morning Story in DTC and our wins and fails of the week.  Come see us live at the Colfax Indie Bash on July 10! We'll be on stage with Mayor Mike Johnston on the patio at Champagne Tiger, and tickets are FREE. All you need to do is RSVP and come out for some good food, great people, and a live podcast with the mayor. RSVP here.  UPDATE: After we recorded this episode, the owners of Morning Story released another statement with more details about the incident with @UnfocusedFoodie. Bree talked about UMS's big announcement, Bar Bar's wall, and Bruce Brown's return to the Nuggets. Paul mentioned this Colorado Sun story about budding local entrepreneurs, 9News' recent interview with DOTI director Amy Ford, the NYT's interview with Trump's border czar Tom Homan, and the sword of Damocles. Deep discussed the Boulder attack victim who passed this week and his personal restaurant guide to Denver. What do you think about a Zohran Mamdani-style candidate emerging in Denver? Could it happen here? Who might that be? We want to hear from you! Huge news for local music lovers broke on Tuesday: The Underground Music Showcase is ending “in its current form” after this year. The festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary later this month with three days of live music and the usual debauchery on South Broadway, and it's unclear what exactly led to this decision. Host Bree Davies has been hearing from musicians, business owners, promoters, and UMS insiders since the news broke, and she's on with producer Paul Karolyi for a bonus episode to dissect the news and the rumors of what's really going on.  What do you think about UMS ending? We want to hear from you! Text or leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: 720-500-5418 Come see us live at the Colfax Indie Bash on July 10!
