We're really excited to share this week's episode with you—a conversation with scholar and historian, Matt Bowman. Matt is the Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies and an associate professor of religion and history at Claremont Graduate University. In this conversation, he draws on ancient scripture to explore two archetypes that show up again and again: the prophet and the priest.The prophet, Matt says, is often a voice from the outside—someone who has had a powerful, personal encounter with the divine and is sent to deliver a message that calls the community to repent. They challenge, critique, and call us back to our spiritual roots.The priest, by contrast, usually nurtures from within—building and sustaining community, preserving memory, and ministering through sacred ritual. The priest creates belonging, continuity, and connection.And while these approaches may seem to contrast, they work in harmony to support and strengthen the spiritual life of a community.Matt notes that beginning around the 1950s, we began consistently referring to the president of the church as the prophet. Certainly it should be noted that Jesus is showing us that he loves to throw a great party, but he tells a story of a great party where many are simply "too busy" to come, despite having RSVP'd. So the host invites the beggars to come instead. Unlike the 'important' people, the beggars gladly drop everything to come. This sort of social is what many would purposefully avoid, yet this is what Jesus says the kingdom of God is like? What is he revealing about us, especially about our mistaken notions of what bring lasting joy, or - more directly - about what should be worth rearranging our calendar? This week on the pod, we were joined by a Virginia mom named Andrea. For years, she thought she hated politics — she says it just seemed like a reason for “people to be mean to each other.” But as last year's election drew closer, she noticed that her friends and family weren't talking about it. Everyone said they were too exhausted after the first Trump presidency.Andrea understood the feeling (who isn't exhausted by Trump??), but she couldn't stand by and do nothing. So she started a TroubleNation group called NoVA Childless Cat Ladies. At first, all they did was write postcards, but she used those get-togethers to talk about their shared values and how they could support marginalized groups in their area. Now, a year later, Childless Cat Ladies has more than 100 members!It feels like we were just here — on the cusp of an election, not knowing which way things will go. If you're feeling a bit of PTSD, you're not alone. This year's elections are getting a lot less press and attention than 2024, but local elections are SO important.
