Hello Dear Wise Co Creators! I'm dropping in here as we cross the threshold of the completion of one linear calendar year and the start of the next with a ritual that never tires, and is like super food for our hearts, minds and spirits ... it's all about honoring and receiving from what you have already done, and using that energy to replenish yourself, so you can create from momentum as we rise up into a new year cycle vs. hit the ground running. ENJOY!  Here's a little about the power of Honor: The energy and act of "Honoring" is one of the most powerful things we have access to, but that we often under use. Honoring is a form a love. It melts away the heavy feels, the judgements of not enough, the pressure to do more. It turns struggle into comfort and possibility.  We think of honor as something someone else has to give to us - when in reality we have the power to bestow honor upon ourselves, in a healthy way, with humility and dignity.  I invoke the super power of honor & this ritual every year at this time because:  I continue to see the power it has to open our hearts, lighten us up, fill us up and give us a way to start the next cycle radiant & clear, roooted in our enoughness. My Guest: Nick Gray is the author of The Two-Hour Cocktail Party and founder of Museum Hack. He's mastered the art of hosting events that strengthen networks and build genuine connections. In this conversation, he shares practical systems for hosting gatherings, why every leader needs a personal website, and lessons learned from his viral blind date trip to Tokyo. The Learning Leader Show Key Learnings Two Great Ice Breaker Questions:  What's a compliment that someone has given you that you've never forgotten about?  If you could teach any class about a topic that you're an expert on, what would it be? The power of a network is real: As a leader, you're probably hiring people regularly or looking for investors. By hosting simple, lightweight meetups or dinner parties, or happy hours once a quarter, you can strengthen your network, build it, and keep those loose connections or weak ties warm. Mix professional and personal contacts: For me, a really boring event would be all work people. Look for occupational diversity. If you're hosting a work event, invite some other random folks who you know are gonna be good conversationalists and add to the energy. Don't reach for the top shelf first. Most important advice for leaders: do not invite your most impressive contact to your very first happy hour or meetup. Your first party should be for your neighbors, the parents of kids at your school, those LinkedIn connections, high school buddies you haven't seen in a while. Your first party should be a comfortable meetup for 15 to 22 people that you host at your home with just cocktails, not a dinner party. Then slowly, once a quarter, you'll be adding more people to it and filtering your list. Collect RSVPs to ensure attendance. New hosts are absolutely terrified that nobody will arrive. As long as you get a minimum of 15 people to show up, your party will generally be a success. Use platforms like Partiful or Mixily (not Paperless Post or Evite) to get people to RSVP, let them know what to expect, and send reminder messages. Ten days before, send a reminder message hyping up the party. About a week before, send another reminder message with a little dossier of who the attendees are. Write something little: "Ryan Hawk hosts a podcast. He wrote a book. He lives in Ohio. Ask him about the ski trip he went on with his family." This serves to make anxious people or socially awkward feel like they're welcome and they have a conversational access point. Practical hosting tips on event day: Label your trash cans and your bathrooms. As people arrive, greet and welcome every single person, and make them a name tag. Write it out right in front of them, first name only. Do not pre-write your name tags. Force collisions through structured activities. Your job as a leader is to go through life collecting the interesting people that you meet and helping them meet each other.  Can you become a connector? One way to be a connector is to host these meetups and force the collisions. Lead two or three rounds of introductions at your meetup. Make a little announcement 30 minutes after it starts: "There are so many interesting people here. I want you all to meet each other. We're gonna split into small groups. It might seem silly, but I promise the purpose tonight is for you to talk to as many new people as possible. We're gonna split into small groups of three or four people, and you're gonna go around and tell your life story in two minutes." End on time, especially for weekday events: Host from 6:30 to 8:30 PM with a hard stop on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. People appreciate having an end time because they have responsibilities. Having that end time makes them more likely to RSVP yes and actually attend. "I get more compliments on my party ending on time, and they leave with a positive experience, so they want to return for another." Why every leader needs a personal website. If you have a blue check verified on Instagram, if you post at least once a month on LinkedIn, you probably need your own personal website. It's proactive reputation management. People are out there searching for you on Google and on ChatGPT. It may not happen every single day, but it probably happens every week. Whether it's parents of your kids at school, whether it's new employees, people are googling you. You want to have a personal website to put your best foot forward and make a good impression. Carrd.co to create a simple homepage or cloudflare to set up your domain name.  Keep it simple: You don't need a Gary Vee type page. Your page can look like a Google Doc. Feed these large language models your story and bio. My website is plain text, simple homepage. I used to have a fancy design site. Now I'm like, dude, it doesn't matter. 80% of my visitors are on their cell phone and just want to read some text and have some links. The tweet from 2024 that changed everything.  The viral Tokyo blind date trip taught me I was ready to share my life with someone. I ended up meeting my wife a couple of months after this experience because I realized I was ready. From a business perspective, one of the most interesting things while that was happening and for about a week afterwards: anyone would accept my phone call. My callbacks were instantaneous. My dial to answer fast. People were reaching out from everywhere. I was like, whoa, is this what it's like to be a celebrity? "I came back to Texas after the trip, ready to truly settle down and find a relationship and meet my now wife." Write like you talk: The best book about storytelling is Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks. Don't try to write a LinkedIn post that says "I'm happy to announce." Would you actually say that to someone? No, you wouldn't. Say it like you talk. Advice on Blind Introductions: Use a double opt-in intro. Reach out to one person first, "Hey, are you taking new clients before I connect you with a friend?" Get both parties' permission, separately - then send the email.  Give yourself a Free Day: Dan Sullivan suggests one free day a quarter from work. Make it a weekday, and even get a burner phone so you can't check your work text/emails, so you're completely disconnected from work.  The keys to being a great host/MC: Priya Parker does such a great job talking about the theory of being a good leader. The host that doesn't do a great job is the one who's too cool to care. Give explicit instructions to people. You are a ring leader for an event, and you're in charge of everyone's energy levels and keeping the show on the road.  Add value before taking value. Never send someone a message, "I'd love to pick your brain," or "I'm looking for a mentor." That is take, take, take. Think about how you can add value first. When you add value first to people, it's some sort of law of reciprocity. They're much more likely to want to help you out or do something in return. Advice for new grads in the AI era: AI and new tools are eating into the ability for companies to hire low-level employees that do grunt work. Learn how to use the tools themselves. Work with small businesses and entrepreneurs where you can make a difference. Develop a writing practice: Matthew Dicks has this activity called Homework for Life where every night you write down some note, some anecdote, something that stuck out for you. It gives you ideas about things to write about. Use AI as an editor, not a writer: Don't outsource your thinking to AI. Use the tools, understand how to use them, but don't outsource your thinking. It'll spit back something decent, but you don't want to outsource your thinking, especially as a leader. Reflection Questions Nick says your first party should be for neighbors, school parents, and LinkedIn connections you haven't seen in a while (not your most impressive contacts). Who are 15-20 people in your life that fall into this "comfortable but haven't connected recently" category that you could invite to a simple cocktail party?   He emphasizes "add value before you take value" and never says "I'd love to pick your brain." Think about someone you want to connect with. What's one specific way you could add value to them first before asking for anything in return?   Nick hosts events once a quarter to keep weak ties warm instead of trying to have individual coffee meetings with everyone. What's one relationship-building activity you're currently doing inefficiently that could be replaced with a group gathering? Last night's Q and A was a really good reminder that progress in dressage is rarely linear and that both riders and horses need space to learn, rest, and reset.Boot camp is coming upI shared a quick overview of our New Year boot camp, which starts on December 31 with goal setting and runs for five full days. The focus is not just on setting goals, but on giving you practical tools for rhythm, balance, rider position, connection, and throughness so you start the year with a clear plan and momentum. If you are in Strides, you are already enrolled and have VIP access. Otherwise, make sure you RSVP!Winter training and groundworkWe talked about winter reality and how to stay productive when riding is limited. In cold or slippery conditions, simple groundwork like hand walking, walk-halt-walk, rein back, and the poll release can be incredibly effective. Safety matters, so footing and common sense always come first.Riding without your own horseOne great question came from a rider who does not own a horse and was feeling less motivated. Riding different horses can actually make you a stronger rider! When you do not have one horse, your goals can shift toward your position, clarity, and feel rather than what one specific horse can or cannot do.Staying motivated and redefining consistencyWe talked a lot about motivation and consistency. Consistency does not mean riding every day. It can include learning, watching videos, reading, groundwork, fitness, and even rest. Fewer high quality rides with real focus are often better than doing everything every day while exhausted.Handling setbacksOne of the most important takeaways was about setbacks. Bad days do not mean you are failing or that you will never get there. They are thoughts, not facts. Confidence comes and goes, and so does doubt. What matters is remembering why you ride and allowing yourself to be on your own journey without comparison.Thank you for being part of these conversations and for bringing such thoughtful questions. Back in 2020, members of the violent group The Proud Boys jumped a fence and defaced the Black Lives Matter sign at Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church. They filmed themselves destroying the sign while chanting racial epithets.Metropolitan AME wasn't the only Black church in D.C. to be attacked that night, but their response to the violence was unique. They sued the Proud Boys for damages, and when the group failed to pay, the church won the rights to their trademark. Now, they're selling merch using the PB logo to raise money for their Community Justice Fund.It's an amazing story, but it's only the backdrop to our conversation this week with Reverend Lamar. Katie and LaFonda's conversation with him spanned so many topics, from the importance of storytelling to the power of love to how to have conversations with our family members at the holiday table. They discussed how the far-right has tried to co-opt Christianity but progressive pastors like Rev. Lamar are still fighting for justice and love — you know, actual Christian values.Rev. Lamar has a book coming out next year called Ancestors: Those Who Bless Us, Curse Us, and Hold Us. He's more directly connected to the past than most—Metropolitan AME is the oldest continuously Black-owned property in D.C and held the funerals of Frederick Douglass and Rosa Parks—but we're all shaped by our ancestors. In recognizing our ancestors, we recognize the stories we tell about ourselves.This conversation is a great way to get in the Christmas spirit, but even if you don't celebrate, his humanity and leadership are inspiring. Christmas can feel magical.It can also feel exhausting. If you're a parent who secretly feels pressure rising as the holidays approach—the expectations, the mess, the emotions, the memories—you're not alone. And sometimes, the clearest wisdom doesn't come from another parenting book or productivity hack. Sometimes it comes from children. I sat down with my two sons for a conversation about Christmas. I expected sweetness and laughter (and we definitely had that). But what I didn't expect was how profoundly wise their reflections would be—for moms and dads who want to keep Christ and joy at the center, even when emotions run high. May this conversation be a gentle reminder for all of us about what truly matters this season. The Most Important Thing During the Holiday Season When I asked my boys what makes Christmas special, their answers were simple: Being with family Giving and receiving gifts And most importantly—Jesus Isn't it interesting how easy it is for adults to know that truth, but still lose sight of it when stress enters the room? Kids seem to understand something we forget:Christmas isn't about perfection.It's about presence. Not perfect decorations.Not perfect meals.Not perfect behavior. But hearts that are oriented toward love. How Christmas Gets Derailed (And What Actually Matters) One of the most insightful moments came when we talked about what can ruin Christmas. Their answer? A negative, ungrateful attitude. And then they surprised me again by pointing out something many parents don't want to hear: "Adults need to remember this too." Children feel the atmosphere of a home.Even when no words are spoken. Tension.Unresolved anger.Stress that leaks out sideways. Kids may not understand the details—but they absolutely feel the weight. And when parents are overwhelmed or snapping at each other, it impacts everything. When You're Tempted to Snap at Your Spouse So, what do you do when you're tempted to snap at your spouse? Here's where the conversation turned especially tender. We talked about parents getting stressed—especially moms who want everything to be "just right" before guests arrive. And my sons said something profound: Take ownership of your emotions Don't take stress out on your spouse Walk away if you need to Calm your body before speaking They emphasized taking ownership of the way you choose to respond. We discussed Matthew 12:36 that says, "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak," The win isn't never feeling frustrated.The win is choosing restraint, humility, and love in the moment of temptation. The Gift of Calming Yourself Before You Speak How do you calm yourself before you lose your temper? They offered practical ideas—simple, doable, grace-filled: Take a walk Drink cold water Take deep breaths Step outside or into another room Take a long shower with space to think Not to avoid responsibility—but to prevent harm. Because once harsh words are spoken, they linger.And children remember not just what we say—but how it felt to be in our presence. If You've Messed Up Before… There Is Grace What if Christmas in the past was painful?What if words were spoken—or wounds created—that still ache? Their advice? Pray Go to the person you hurt Say "I'm sorry" sincerely Ask if there's anything you can do to repair And then—trust God with what you cannot undo. You are not disqualified from joy because of past mistakes. Keeping Christ at the Center (Without Adding Pressure) When I asked how families can keep Jesus at the center of Christmas, their answers weren't complicated: A nativity scene A meaningful star on the tree Praying before meals Simply thinking about Jesus Not performance. Not religious pressure. Just intentional reminders. Sometimes the most Christ-centered thing you can do is slow down enough to remember why you're celebrating. Final Thoughts: What Happens After Christmas The final question: When January comes, how do you want to remember this Christmas? My boys said: Happy, Safe, Grateful, Hopeful. Not impressed.Not exhausted.Not relieved it's over. But filled. That kind of Christmas doesn't come from doing more. It comes from being more present. If the holidays feel intimidating this year, hear this:You don't have to create a perfect Christmas.You are invited to cultivate a peaceful one. One where Christ is honored. Where your marriage is protected. Where your children feel safe. Where grace is louder than stress. And if you feel overwhelmed already—pause. Jesus came for this kind of moment. May your home be filled with warmth, peace, and joy this season. So you start depleted vs. ready to receive.  It's a wiser to move through the gears one by one, over the course of weeks, so you can: savor your connections, deeply replenish, and receive from all you have created this past cycle. Making choices that support you to be healthy, clear and ready to receive inspiration, insight and clarity for focusing and co-creating next year. This year ... I tuned into for what was needed this December Downshift and realized we would also benefit with a Consciousness Uplift too. So we can really replenish our light + shake off the stress + see the progress and difference our effort and care has made + work with the inner "heart alchemy" already happening within us, including releasing inner patterns and past experiences that it's time to heal, let go and rise stronger and more compassionate from. Let's start with the basics. 3I/ATLAS is an interstellar comet, meaning it's not from our solar system. It's a cosmic traveler cruising at over 100,000 miles an hour. It will make its closest approach to Earth around December 19, 2025, which means around 170 million miles away. So yes, it's rare and worth paying attention to. But physically? You're fine. Humanity is fine. The planet is fine. Now spiritually… this is where things get interesting. People Are Lit Up About This Comet Astronomers love it because it's only our third known interstellar visitor after ‘Oumuamua and Borisov. But the spiritual community is lit up because of the timing, the symbolism, and the energetic ripples many intuitives are already feeling. Channelers are comparing notes. If we collapse or tip, it becomes harder for the horse to bend around the inside leg. Asking for more bend on the ground helps it show up more easily under saddle, and riding clear patterns helps keep both horse and rider organized and balanced.Goals and long term developmentThere was a thoughtful discussion about goals, from big long term dreams to small daily steps.
