⬥EPISODE NOTES⬥ At Infosecurity Europe 2026, Sean Martin sits down with Rik Ferguson, Vice President of Security Intelligence at Forescout, a day before Rik Ferguson takes the keynote stage with a deliberately provocative title: "Post-Quantum Cryptography Is a Way Off. We Can Wait, Can't We?" The honest answer, he says, is that waiting is a choice, and it is the wrong one. The threat is neither theoretical nor distant. Rik Ferguson walks through why the infrastructure for harvest-now, decrypt-later attacks already exists, pointing to Salt Typhoon, to BGP rerouting by unfriendly nations, and to intelligence agencies stockpiling encrypted data they cannot read yet but expect to read later. With NIST placing Q Day around 2035, Google pointing at 2029, and IBM's fault-tolerant Starling system slated for 2029, the distance between "someday" and "the hardware you purchase this year" has effectively closed. Sean Martin keeps steering the conversation back to the business. The parallel both of them keep returning to is Y2K, which became a non-event precisely because people did the work. The quantum question, Rik Ferguson argues, is not only about security or resilience, it is a budget and procurement question: which data has a long enough shelf life to still matter when it is finally decrypted? Pharmaceutical R&D, merger and acquisition strategy, sovereign debt positions, and legal negotiations all live under an assumed umbrella of privacy that encryption may not hold. The most unsettling point is what a harvest-now attack does to incident response. There is no time-bounding. Adversaries could have been collecting for a decade, and the first sign of trouble arrives only when the data is weaponized or made public, leaving the investigation disabled by chronology alone. Ryan Pearcy and Indi Tatla cover a big week in accounting tech, from Starling's contested MTD launch to Intuit cutting 3,000 jobs and Xero's push to own the workflow layer. Starling Bank launched Accounting Essentials in March, a free bookkeeping and MTD submission tool for sole traders and landlords built on its acquisition of Ember. Indi walks through Lucy Cohen's analysis, which found 18% of entries in a fully reconciled ledger had no corresponding bank entry for the same period. That raises serious questions about what happens when AI-categorised bank data is the primary input for MTD submissions. Ryan notes that Starling had built a strong accountant partner channel and the "job done" framing has damaged those relationships. Neither host disputes the product's convenience. Both dispute that convenience is the same thing as accuracy. Xero has announced XeroForce, a no-code agent builder that lets practices describe repeatable processes in plain English and run them as automated workflows across clients and connected apps. The ambition is to shift Xero from the ledger layer to the workflow layer, with audit trails and sign-off controls across an entire client base. Indi is sceptical about how it performs against messy real-world data and edge-case tax rules. Ryan raises whether XeroCon might be where Xero fills in the technical detail. Intuit has cut around 3,000 roles, 17% of its global workforce, across QuickBooks, TurboTax, Credit Karma and Mailchimp, announcing the cuts on the same day it raised its full-year revenue guidance. Indi frames it as AI shifting from feature roadmap to operating model, and notes that Intuit has a history of testing "you don't need an accountant" messaging in other markets before the UK. Sentencing laws are back in the headlines - and will likely play a part in this year's election campaigning. This week, a news article about the sentencing and early release of George Starling, a repeat sexual offender, reignited the debate about New Zealand's sentencing laws. It's easy to see why - it's one of many examples of how a punishment doesn't appear to fit the crime, and gives the impression we have a system favouring offenders over victims. Starling was convicted of drugging and raping a woman in 2011. She was one of two victims on the same night. He was not charged until 2020, and by then had served time for a 2011 rape of a third woman. He was found guilty and the judge set a sentencing start point of 10 years' imprisonment. However, once discounts had been applied - for youth and prior good character - the final sentence was reduced by 40 percent, resulting in a prison term of six years. He was also credited for his prior jail sentence, which judges are required by law to take into consideration, and a head injury he sustained after the offending. Then comes how parole works - under New Zealand law, offenders who are not subject to a minimum non-parole period and are serving sentences of more than two years become eligible for parole after serving one-third of their sentence. As a result, a six-year sentence may lead to parole consideration after two years. Release is not automatic, but if the Parole Board determines an offender no longer poses an undue risk to the community parole may be granted. In this case, the parole board cited Starling's low risk, and that he had not offended after his first prison sentence. After all this maths, the result was Starling was released after serving less than two years. This case highlights the ongoing tension between rehabilitation-focused justice and public expectations of accountability and deterrence. The arguments for sentence discounts are that they encourage guilty pleas, reduce court costs, acknowledge personal circumstances and promote rehabilitation, while parole provides incentives for prisoners to address their offending behaviour. This is all well and good, except that this approach fails to adequately reflect the harm suffered by victims. It's little wonder victims of serious violence or sexual offending feel the legal process focuses heavily on the offender's circumstances while giving less weight to the long-term impacts of on their lives. One of Starling's victims stated they had only just began to put the ordeal behind them when they were notified by the parole board that Starling's first parole hearing was coming up. The challenge for policymakers is finding a balance between protecting victims' interests, ensuring public confidence in the justice system, and maintaining principles of fairness and rehabilitation for offenders. The National Party has already instigated sentencing changes, which came into force in June 2025, but recently announced that if it wins re-election it will prohibit judges from treating an offender's "good character" as a mitigating factor when sentencing for sexual offending, as well as increasing support for victims. It is a step in the right direction - because at present, cases with large discounts and early parole simply undermine public confidence in the justice system. Less than 2% of venture capital goes to female founders. When Laurie McGraw started Inspiring Women five years ago, the number was 2.4%. A few years later it had dropped to 1.8%. Absolute dollars going to women have grown, but the share of total capital has gone the other way, and the gap is now one of the largest unsolved problems in capital allocation. Laurie sits down with three women working to change that from inside the system. The guests: Ita Ekpoudom is a Partner at Gingerbread Capital, a family office fund started by a former co-chair of tech banking at Goldman Sachs who realized after retiring that she had never made a private investment in her entire career. Gingerbread now invests directly into female-founded and co-founded companies, and as an LP into majority women-led funds. Jenny Abramson is the Founder and Managing Partner of Rethink Impact, the largest fund in the country backing female CEOs across health, education, environment, and economic empowerment. Jenny was a tech CEO herself before founding Rethink in 2015. Her mother had run one of the earliest institutional funds backing women roughly twenty years before that, and the share of VC going to women was higher in her mother's era than in Jenny's. Erin Harkless Moore leads the investment platform at Pivotal Ventures, the organization founded by Melinda French Gates to advance women's power and influence.
