We dive into his unique journey — from chasing a dream in the sports world to stepping into the senior living space inspired by his late father's legacy. We cover a lot of ground in this one: how Blair builds trust across generations, the power of consistency in mentorship, and why vulnerability in leadership might be the biggest strength of all.

Most music fans know Kevin Hearn as the pianist and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies. Few would know that Kevin was the band leader for Lou Reed for 7 emotional years.  Or that he fought a battle with leukemia for many years, even while touring with BNL.   Gord Downie knew all those stories when he asked Kevin Hearn and Kevin Drew to help him prepare for live performances of his final music project - Secret Path! Because he had just been down his own darkened  path , Kevin Hearn was able to bring comfort and  strength to the recording of Gord's final songs.  Kevin takes us though those moments including Gord's last words to him, about his friendship with Lou Reed and then takes us on another journey - this time to Jamaica.   Kevin's new solo album is called Portland Parish. Recorded in three locations. A small jungle cottage, the legendary Trident Hotel and the long-abandoned Trident Castle.  Kevin plays originals, covers (Lou Reed and Sun Ra Arkestra) on a collection of creaking pianos weathered by time and nature. If you listen closely, you can hear chirping frogs and dogs barking in the distance. Several of the pianos were damaged and barely playable.  Kevin says, "The idea was to seek out semi-abandoned pianos in spaces said to be haunted and improvise."

They explore how software and sampling techniques allow musicians to replicate the sounds of real instruments and to design better pianos before manufacturing. They discuss how robot simulations allow testing code safely in virtual environments, avoiding costly or dangerous real-world consequences. The conversation extends to frameworks like Gazebo, Unity, and reinforcement learning platforms, and also how simulations cannot always bridge the gap between training in virtual spaces and real-world execution. This week Joe and Dave share some interesting follow up from a few episodes ago where Dave shared his love for baby grand pianos and how scammers we're using that to lure people into traps. Listener George wrote in to share about a show on UK Channel 4, called "The Piano," it's a music competition where visitors play a public piano in a train station, judged by hidden famous pianists, with winners performing at the UK Royal Festival Hall. Joe's story is a warning to travel goers using booking.com, as they share scams are at a all time high. Dave's story follows some neighborhood Facebook groups, and how they are inundated with posts about air duct cleaning services, prompting an investigation that reveals a scam involving fake profiles, telemarketers in Pakistan, and local technicians. Our catch of the day comes from listener Christopher, who writes in to share an outlandish message he received from a hacker with too much time on their hands. Please take a moment to fill out an audience survey! Let us know how we are doing! I had always assumed that piano keyboards were standardized and unchangeable. That it was our job as musicians to adapt to the instrument, rather than making it adapt to us. I'm delighted to find that I was mistaken!  Pianist, vocalist, composer, singer-songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur, Hannah Reimann began her career as a concert pianist with a pedagogical lineage that traces back through generations to Beethoven via her teachers, German Diez, Arminda Canteros, Kenneth Cooper etc. and a touring history with violist Paul Coletti with whom she performed together with internationally in the 1990s and early 2000s. She is currently completing both a solo piano album of new music and a pop EP of original songs. Her show, Both Sides Now, The Music of Joni Mitchell, has been heard in four states for the past 12 years. She has led a multi-genre life since she was a teen, singing in bands, playing Beethoven Sonatas and Mozart Concertos, and competing in a piano competition. In 1997, Hannah independently rebuilt her Steinway piano to better accommodate her hand size. Her success with the instrument has made her the face of the stretto piano as a producer of concerts. Ms. Reimann was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal as a “musician on a mission to make the world safe for small pianists.” For more than 30 years, her goal has been to influence piano manufacturers worldwide to offer narrow-key pianos (which we now generically call “stretto”) and to produce concerts with them everywhere. She created the nonprofit Stretto Piano Events in 2024 after founding the festival and concert series in 2021.   Read more at the website, instagram, Facebook, or see the concert schedule online.
