The boy has gone and got himself a hat trick! Sam Tyrer is officially the first person to get his own dedicated 3rd episode on this show and I can't think of anyone more deserving! Sam has been someone I have worked with closer and closer over the last few years,, originally through his program Change Talks. This year we took that program online as The Mental Health Family Hour and have reached literally 1000s of people with that work on top of recently being both awarded the Points Of Light award from the Prime Minister. On top of all this amazing work Sam is also a Dad, a Husband and an Ultra-Endurance Athlete. Oh and just an all around top bloke!
"No one's gonna come help you! You have to help yourself!” On this week's podcast, we speak to the incredible Sam Tyrer, founder of Change Talks. A project born from Sam's desire to help change the stigma around mental health after overcoming his own mental health issues and working as a nurse. Taking a proactive approach, tackling the problem from the root cause rather than the effect. At the age of just 27 years old, he's already worked with industry professionals and schools to develop and deliver safe open experiences to empower more than 35,000 young people nationwide! Currently working with Lancashire and South Cumbria Trust in suicide prevention, co-hosting the 'Mental Health Family Hour', a free resource to help families through lockdown with all aspects of their mental health and honing his skills as an endurance athlete about to take on the biggest physical challenge of his life to date. One of the most driven men I know with a vest for life and passion for educating young people to change the landscape of mental health as we know it. In his own words, "I want the title of the book of my life to be, 'Fuck Yeah!'" We get deep! Come dive in deep with us! Sam Tyrer is the founder of Change Talks, a Lancashire based initiative taking mental health education into schools. In this episode we discuss some of the more difficult situations facing children in school at the moment along with the current state of play of the mental health industry as a whole. It gets pretty deep and personal in places for both Sam and myself.
Mental Health... prevention is better than a cure right? I certainly think so, so when I was approached by past podcast guest Sam Tyrer to speak at a school for some 13 year olds I jumped at the chance! Actually... I was a touch reluctant at first... last time I was in a school I was being bullied daily! Now I visit 5 schools each half term to deliver this message. Helping teenagers to understand better their mental health.
You'll recognise Sam Tyrer from a past episode of the podcast, where he talked about Change Talks; his amazing project taking mental health education into schools. But Sam also takes these projects elsewhere and is committed to helping change things when it comes to men's mental health. With that in mind he got the four of us together to have a discussion about where we see the current state and what needs to change. Male or female this is a vital piece of content as we all move to help increase empathy and understanding and eliminating the stigma.
Sam Tyrer and Lindsay Irwin from Change Talks join Mick Coyle in the studio to talk about the work they’re doing in Lancashire schools. Sam set up the organisation after his own battle with depression, and now shares his story with young people. Lindsey is a trained mental health nurse. They’re hoping to expand their work across the North West, and tell Mick about some of the issues they deal with in classrooms.
