We are taking a look at the human side of hockey on the podcast today as Bob and John have a conversation with Jay Harrison, and then Kelly Chase. Bob and John talk with Jay about his “First Line Initiative” as he works with the NHLPA to not only reduce the stigma of mental health among hockey players but also provide resources to help teammates support each other. After the break, Kelly Chase joins the show to give us an update on his fight with leukemia and inform us about his “Puck Cancer” event in St. Louis on April 5th." I've added commas before "and then" for clarity and changed "leukaemia" to "leukemia" for consistency with American English spelling. Additionally, I've capitalized "April" and added a period after "5th" for consistency and clarity.

Friendly Warning: The content in this episode may be difficult for some listeners In recent years we've seen a big shift toward mental health awareness, but unfortunately, our society doesn't always acknowledge mental health in the same way as physical health. I am so grateful to have Kathi Meyers on the podcast today as a powerful reminder of the things we can do to prioritize our family's mental health. Kathi and her husband, Brandon, have their hearts rooted in service. Their commitment is towards ending the stigma associated with mental health issues through education & changes in public policy. Together they started the Samuel R. Myers Foundation for Suicide and Mental Health Awareness in 2017, shortly after their 19-year-old son's suicide. Kathi has worked in the medical field for nearly 30 years, while Brandon has worked for more than 26 years in law enforcement. Their personal and professional experience provides a unique insight into mental health challenges. They remind us that mental health does not discriminate and can affect even the most involved, caring, attentive, and close-knit families from healthy homes. By sharing Sam's story, Kathi provides incredible guidance on different resources available to parents and caregivers, the various steps they took towards finding help for their son, the obstacles they had to overcome, as well as the social pressure their son felt while navigating OCD, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and even digestive issues. Kathi also shares difficult but heartwarming advice on dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic event like her son's passing, including her journey with post-traumatic stress disorder and situational grief. Hearing a story like Kathi's can be difficult for some, but it is an important and eye-opening conversation that will leave you with a few helpful tools that may one day help you or someone you know. Key Takeaways with Kathi Meyers Prioritizing mental health at the same level as physical health. Ending the stigma associated with mental health through education & public policy. Mental health does not discriminate, and can affect anyone. Great resources for parents and caregivers of children with mental health issues. How mental health can affect the whole family. The power of local communities, and supporting those struggling with their mental health. How to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder & situational grief. In this episode, I talk to Scott Oughton-Johnson, the founder of The Proper Bloke's Club, a peer-to-peer support group with the aim to provide a safe and relaxed environment to break down the stigma of men talking about their mental health. Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 50. Sadly, 115 people die by suicide in the UK every week, with 75% of those deaths being male. (ONS). Scott explains how his organisation is trying to improve men's mental health by getting the conversation started so men can open up and talk by walking together as a group. Exercise has been a proven way to help people with any sort of mental health issues by releasing endorphins that make you feel good about yourself. Walking is free, so makes a great way to start and gets men out in the fresh air with around 200 of Scott's 'lads' benefitting from The Proper Blokes Club to date.I then talk to Danny, one of Scott's lads, who suffered a long period of ill health which impacted his mental health. He was offered antidepressants and computer-based training (CBT) courses by his GP but they weren't right for him. Finally, he was convinced by his best friend to approach Scott's walking group. It took him months before he plucked up the courage to reach out but after meeting Scott and going for that first walk, he felt like a weight had been lifted and he was able to be honest with his friends and family; something that he wishes he had been able to do earlier."No one walks alone...the act of walking actually takes your mind off the talking and it just seems to flow. I think they're hand in hand". To find out more about The Proper Blokes Club visit the website: https://theproperblokesclub.co.uk/ or email: theproperblokesclub@gmail.com or call Scott: 07397 501110.
You know that cliche phrase "leaving to spend more time with my family" that so many people us when they leave a job? For Lenny Mendoca, the phrase didn't have much life. After serving as senior partner at McKinsey, Mendoca went on to work as an advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom. He announced his retirement from Newson's office with the standard phrase. But within a few weeks, after starting to process his clinical depression, he shared it with the public. It's not an easy thing for any successful people, but in some ways even harder for men, to talk about mental health in their careers because of stereotypes and stigma. In this episode, Morra speaks Mendoca, and also listener Darshan Patel, a regional lead at a global company who himself struggles with severe depression and bipolar disorder, and is looking to break the stigma around mental health in India in particular.

Mental health is at the core of all our suffering. The stigma stops with YOU. It is such a taboo topic in our society that is attached to such shame and suppression, which exacerbates the issue. In my talk at @podfestexpo last Friday, I shared how 1 in 5 people suffer from mental illness globally. Among our youth, ages 18-25 this number increases to 1 in 3. Yes, 1 in 3 people ages 18-25 suffer. Most in silence. It is not socially acceptable to admit our mental struggles, yet we continue to ignore the very root cause of human suffering in all forms. When will we wake up? When will we see that any ideology rooted in fear and manipulation of the mind to suppress the human Spirit is the very thing that is keeping us stuck? The stigma stops with ME. The stigma stops with YOU. It's our time to stop the stigma as a collective to finally admit we are all a destined part of the healing experience needed to elevate ourselves out of the chaos that is not our own to hold. The month of May in mental health awareness is over, but my message remains strong and amplified. This episode unlocks more portals of conscious and subconscious energies to help us collectively STOP THE STIGMA. Hey everyone! Today, I am talking about a topic that is extremely near and dear to my Christian/Therapist heart. I was so eager to talk about this topic that it may not seem as polished as other episodes. However, I really wanted to get this conversation started, and continue some of this conversation for the next few weeks. Today we will be talking about the stigma of mental health in the church, and what I feel needs to change. I have been a Christian all of my life, and I am so in love with Jesus. I believe this is why, I am so passionate about the church representing Him well. If this topic resonates with you and you have been affecting by this, please email me or DM on Instagram, links posted below.
