In this episode, Elena May Gruneberg joins me to talk about her decision to live a vegan lifestyle.  During college, we spent a semester in Italy sharing many meat-based meals, so this was a raw and honest conversation about what made her decide she will never eat a meat product or byproduct again. Elena shares some great insight on the challenges of making the choice, while simultaneously destigmatizing the way many people view veganism. Elena's approach is one rooted in the desire to educate, eat clean, and save the lives of animals - without shaming the people who don't follow the same path. We discuss: - Why Elena and her husband, Matt, committed to living vegan - How plant-based diets improve overall health - Common misconceptions about being vegan - How the planet benefits from more people following plant-based diets - Resources for anyone looking to learn more about the vegan lifestyle + plant-based diets This episode's WhoTheF*ck For A Cause supports Farm Sanctuary If you have the means, please visit whothefck.com/donate and give what you can to support healthy living conditions for farm animals. Elena Bensonoff is the founder of Wholistic Inc., Published Author, World Renowned Wholistic Teacher, Clinical Pharmacist, Diplomate in Anti-Aging, Functional and Regenerative Medicine, Award Winning Natural Perfumer, and Creator of the Wholistic Wisdom Program and Masterclass, which have helped thousands of people all over the world harness their inner healing power to end their struggles with Chronic Illness once and for all. Elena started her career as a clinical pharmacist but quickly found that she was not fulfilled with this career path. During a health crisis in her life, doctors told Elena that she would need to stay on multiple different medications. Elena was determined to find a different solution. She discovered that diet, stress and environment were playing a large role in her health, so she became determined to change it. She also started exploring healing modalities. She was invited to attend an American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine conference. This conference was her first real introduction to traditional holistic practices. Elena became captivated by the research and case studies supporting natural healing techniques and it confirmed her beliefs about how toxic many of the ingredients in Western medicine are. The most powerful realization Elena had on her path was that true healing doesn’t come in a pill bottle. It comes from within. Every person holds the key to their own healing. All they need is a guiding light to empower them with love, wisdom, and support. Thus, Wholistic, Inc. was born, and this is what Elena has herself to for over 20 years. Now, her only career goal is to expand the network of empowered self-healers and lightworkers all over the world through infusing light, love, and wisdom into her books, meditations, and internationally renowned Wholistic courses. At the age of 38, Elena had her eggs frozen, by her early 40s, she was using those eggs and a sperm donor to conceive a child. She is now the proud mother of a healthy 3-year-old girl. Like most women, Elena had her own ideas of how motherhood was going to be but life went another direction. We discuss how Elena was able to move past her expectations of motherhood. She recommends the benefits of therapy and finding people you can trust to listen and help you sort through the complex emotions that come with this alternative path to motherhood. Elena shares what motherhood has been like for her and what she would tell other women considering the single-motherhood-by-choice path. The joy she feels when she discusses her daughter is really infectious. She truly enjoys the single-mother-by-choice path and is a heart-warming reminder that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to build a family. Some highlights of today’s conversation: Elena’s early ideas of motherhood. The decision to freeze her eggs and the realization she would need them. How therapy helped her let go of her expectations of motherhood. Why you should look for sperm donors that share similar traits to you. The importance of knowing the medical history of a sperm donor. Why Elena is taking the honest approach with her daughter regarding her conception. The overwhelming depth of love Elena feels for her daughter. How being an older and single mother creates appreciation. Why Elena feels she is more comfortable with motherhood. The unexpected exhaustion that comes with motherhood.
