In this episode, Dr. David Jockers sits down with Vanessa Spina, sports nutrition specialist, bestselling author of Keto Essentials, creator of the Tone ketone breath analyzer, and host of the Optimal Protein Podcast, for a deep dive on a groundbreaking new study out of the University of Nottingham, published in Clinical Nutrition in August 2025. You will learn why the old "you can only absorb 30 grams of protein per meal" rule doesn't hold up, what really happens to protein you eat beyond that amount, and why the popular anabolic-window advice to slam a shake right after your workout is largely a myth. Dr. Jockers and Vanessa then break down a randomized, controlled fasting-mimicking diet study that overturns the long-held belief that high protein blocks autophagy, and explain why a high-protein, calorie-restricted approach can outperform a low-protein one for visceral fat loss, ketone production, and metabolic health.  They close with a practical, hour-by-hour walkthrough of the protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF): what to eat, how much protein to target, how to structure refeed days, and how it compares to water fasting and Ozempic for appetite control.   In This Episode:  00:00 Protein Absorption Myth 00:14 Episode Intro and Study Teaser 05:29 Meet Vanessa and Study Setup 07:35 100g Protein Study Breakdown 12:17 Protein Timing and Real Life 17:48 Protein First for Satiety 23:55 Ketones and High Protein Keto 28:10 Stress Hormones and Growth Hormone 31:58 Autophagy Study Lead In 33:12 Why Human Trials Matter 34:52 Autophagy Headlines vs Reality 35:54 High Protein FMD Study Setup 39:01 Autophagy Still Upregulated 40:53 Visceral Fat and Metabolic Wins 44:12 PSMF One Day Weekly 44:58 Vanessa PSMF Results 47:22 Meals Macros and Refeeds 51:21 Ketones Hunger and Ozempic 55:27 Weekly Schedule and Whoosh 58:26 PSMF Meal Ideas and Tips 01:04:06 Water Fast vs PSMF 01:05:54 Wrap Up and Where to Find 01:06:56 Final Listener Outro   This podcast is sponsored by Paleo Valley's Turmeric Complex, a whole-food organic turmeric formula (not just isolated curcumin) blended with coconut oil and black pepper for absorption, plus ginger, rosemary, and cloves for extra anti-inflammatory and brain-support benefits. JP Miller: Why Police Kept Believing Him

Mica Miller called police at least seven times reporting harassment, tire slashing, and surveillance, telling officers she was afraid for her life. Every single time, her husband John-Paul Miller had already gotten to the narrative first — telling officers she was bipolar, schizophrenic, having an episode. He filed a mental health pick-up order against her. He confiscated her phone, laptop, purse, and car, claiming he was protecting her finances. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott explains the tactic in clinical terms: an abuser terrorizes a woman in private, then weaponizes her natural trauma response to convince the very people she's asking for help that she's the unstable one. Federal prosecutors allege JP tracked her car, contacted her more than fifty times in one day, and posted an intimate photo of her online without consent. Two of Mica's February 2024 911 calls, published by FITSNews, add another layer — in one, she reports that JP's adult son Logan Ryan Hardee made an unwanted advance toward her in the kitchen; in the other, she says he was following her in his work truck, armed, and living in the home she'd fled. Logan already faced a felony domestic violence charge tied to a different woman's hospitalization. Two 2025 civil lawsuits go further still, alleging JP and his father used their churches and a school to gain access to underage girls across two decades. His father never answered and lost by default. JP's federal cyberstalking trial is set for October 2026. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Eighty witnesses. Five weeks. Three hundred exhibits. And Lindsay Clancy's jury still can't agree on the one question that decides everything — was she psychotic when her three children died, or wasn't she. Judge Sullivan gave them the Tuey-Rodriguez instruction, the blunt version of there is no better jury coming after you, go finish the job. They went back into the room. They're still deadlocked. And while they were stuck, a 56-year-old woman was arrested outside Plymouth Superior Court for allegedly filming jurors as they left the building. She told police she'd come to see Lindsay. Investigators found deleted video of the jury on her phone anyway. Sullivan had to question every single juror, one at a time, before deliberations could resume — all while the panel was already telling the court they might not reach a verdict at all. The defense conceded the physical facts a long time ago. Kevin Reddington told the court outright that his client killed her children; the exercise bands and the DNA aren't in dispute. What's in dispute is criminal responsibility, and in Massachusetts, once the defense raises insanity, the burden shifts to the prosecution to prove she was sane. That's the needle twelve strangers have been trying to thread for days. If they can't get there, nothing is resolved. Lindsay Clancy stays charged with three counts of first-degree murder, still held at Tewksbury State Hospital, still paralyzed from the waist down, while Plymouth County DA Timothy Cruz decides whether to try this case all over again. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony to unpack the deadlock, the parking-lot arrest that nearly derailed it further, and what either outcome means for a case this fractured. Links & Footer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Prosecutors called Kirk Heilbrun to help prove Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three children. Instead, the forensic psychologist told jurors this was a serious suicide attempt accompanied by killing her children out of love, because Clancy couldn't bear to leave them behind — testimony that sounds a lot more like a defense argument than a prosecution one.  He wasn't the only one. Forensic psychiatrist Gregory Saathoff, another prosecution witness, agreed under defense questioning that the state's own opening statement had minimized what Clancy was actually experiencing. He also flagged what he called significant inconsistencies in her account of the voice she says ordered her to kill Cora, Dawson, and Callan — a voice that appeared once, lasted roughly eighteen minutes, and stopped the moment the children were dead.  The defense used the opening the state's witnesses gave them. Attorney Kevin Reddington showed jurors a chart of Clancy's prescriptions — lorazepam, sertraline, hydroxyzine, buspirone, trazodone — stacked up by providers who never coordinated her care, alongside a December 2022 journal entry he said had deteriorated into chicken scratches a month before the killings. His final witness, forensic psychiatrist Phillip Resnick, who evaluated Andrea Yates decades earlier, told the jury Clancy was clearly psychotic.  ADA Jennifer Sprague's closing argued something entirely different: that Clancy made a rational choice, that her children were the only thing keeping her alive, and that she left them in the basement and went upstairs to finish what she'd started for herself.  The jury deliberated three and a half hours on their first day with no verdict. Bob Motta and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer break it down with Tony Brueski — and they don't agree on who won the day. Links & Disclaimer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A woman doesn't call someone back if she's being controlled by a voice in her head. That's the argument prosecutors made to a Plymouth County jury weighing whether Lindsay Clancy is criminally responsible for killing her three children.  Twenty minutes. That's how long Clancy was alone with Cora, Dawson, and Callan while her husband Patrick ran to CVS and picked up Thai food. ADA Jennifer Sprague told jurors Clancy chose the basement, chose strangulation with exercise bands, and repeated it three times — then missed a call, phoned back, held a conversation, and hung up. Prosecutors say that isn't what a puppet does.  The defense says it's exactly what happens once a hallucination has already finished its work. Clancy described a male voice that appeared once, on the afternoon of January 24, 2023, and told her this was her last chance. It lasted roughly eighteen minutes. It stopped the second her children were dead. Defense experts Paul Zeizel and Phillip Resnick both testified she had no appreciation that what she was doing was wrong. Resnick, who evaluated Andrea Yates after her own children's deaths, used the word puppet too — just aimed the other direction.  The prosecution's forensic psychiatrist Gregory Saathoff pushed back hard on the timing, calling a hallucination that vanishes the instant the act is done clinically unusual. Defense attorney Reddington countered in closing with a different number: thirteen psychiatric medications, prescribed by providers who never spoke to one another.  Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta was inside that Plymouth courtroom. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has her own read on the evidence. Tony Brueski brings both of them together as the jury weighs a case where two forensic teams looked at the same eighteen minutes and reached opposite conclusions. Links & Disclaimer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Eighteen minutes of a voice nobody else ever heard. Twenty minutes alone with three children. Those two windows of time are the entire case against — and for — Lindsay Clancy, and a Plymouth County jury is now deciding which one actually explains what happened in that Duxbury basement.  Patrick Clancy left for CVS and Thai food. When he came back, Cora, Dawson, and Callan were gone. Prosecutors say Lindsay used exercise bands, used the basement, and did it three separate times — once for each child — before missing a phone call, calling back, and having a completely ordinary conversation. ADA Jennifer Sprague argues that isn't consistent with a woman who wasn't in control of herself, and told the jury exactly that in closing.  Lindsay told forensic evaluators otherwise. A male voice she'd never heard before appeared that January afternoon and told her this was her last chance. It lasted about eighteen minutes and disappeared the moment the children were dead. She says it hasn't come back. Defense psychiatrists Paul Zeizel and Phillip Resnick both testified to postpartum psychosis and zero appreciation of wrongdoing — Resnick, notably, testified for Andrea Yates using nearly identical language decades ago. The state's own psychiatrist, Gregory Saathoff, told jurors that hallucinations don't usually clock out the second the act is finished.  Defense attorney Reddington's closing pointed somewhere else entirely: thirteen psychiatric medications, stacked on top of each other by providers who never once compared notes or coordinated Lindsay's care.  Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and defense attorney Bob Motta sit down with Tony Brueski to argue out both sides of a case where the forensic experts can't agree — and neither, this time, can the hosts. Links & Disclaimer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? FITSNews published two of Mica Miller's 911 calls from February 2024, and together they show a household spiraling out of control. In the first, Mica tells a dispatcher that her husband's adult son made an unwanted advance toward her in her own kitchen while John-Paul Miller wasn't home. In the second, she says that same son — Logan Ryan Hardee, JP's oldest — has been following her across town in his work truck, that he's armed, and that he's living in the house she fled to escape JP. Logan was already facing a felony domestic violence charge after a different woman was hospitalized with a head injury; he's never been charged with anything involving Mica. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins to explain the pattern underneath all of it — how every time Mica called police reporting harassment, tire slashing, or surveillance, JP had already told officers she was bipolar, schizophrenic, having an episode, then confiscated her phone, laptop, purse, and car. Federal prosecutors allege he tracked her car and posted an intimate photo of her online without consent. Two 2025 civil lawsuits allege JP and his father used their churches and a school to gain access to underage girls for two decades; his father never answered and lost by default. JP has pleaded not guilty to federal cyberstalking charges, with trial set for October 2026. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Lindsay Clancy's Trial Nearly Ended Over WHAT?

A jury that's already split on whether a mother is criminally responsible for killing her three children just found out someone was filming them on their way out of the courthouse. That's where the Lindsay Clancy trial stands right now. The panel spent five weeks hearing eighty witnesses and reviewing more than three hundred exhibits, all circling one unresolved question — was Lindsay Clancy psychotic on January 24, 2023, or wasn't she. The defense doesn't dispute what happened; Kevin Reddington has already told the court his client killed her kids with the exercise bands, and the DNA backs that up. The entire case now rests on criminal responsibility, and Massachusetts puts the burden of proving sanity on the prosecution once the defense raises it. When the jury told Judge Sullivan they couldn't reach a verdict, he read them the Tuey-Rodriguez charge — essentially telling them no future jury will have better evidence, so go back and keep trying. They did. They're still stuck. And somewhere in the middle of that impasse, a woman was arrested outside the courthouse accused of secretly filming jurors, with deleted footage of the panel recovered from her phone. Sullivan had to individually question every juror before letting deliberations continue. If this jury ultimately hangs, nothing about Lindsay Clancy's status changes. No acquittal, no conviction. She stays charged with three counts of murder, held at Tewksbury State Hospital, paralyzed from the waist down, while Plymouth County DA Timothy Cruz weighs what comes next. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis breaks down how close this case is to a mistrial, what the secret filming does to either side's appeal options, and why a jury this deadlocked was always going to be a coin flip.  Links & Footer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Five drugs, one chart, zero coordination. That's how defense attorney Kevin Reddington framed Lindsay Clancy's psychiatric care for a Plymouth County jury — lorazepam, sertraline, hydroxyzine, buspirone, trazodone, stacked on a new mother by providers who never once talked to each other. He paired it with her handwritten journal from December 2022, a month before the killings, pages he said had collapsed into chicken scratches because her mind was already gone.  The defense closed with forensic psychiatrist Phillip Resnick, who evaluated Andrea Yates decades earlier and told this jury Clancy was clearly psychotic when she killed Cora, Dawson, and Callan.  Then there's what the prosecution's own witnesses said. Forensic psychologist Kirk Heilbrun told jurors this was a serious suicide attempt accompanied by killing her children out of love, because she couldn't bear to leave them behind. Forensic psychiatrist Gregory Saathoff, pressed by the defense, agreed the state's own opening statement had minimized what Clancy was going through, while also flagging inconsistencies in her account of the voice she says ordered the killings.  ADA Jennifer Sprague's closing pushed back hard: Clancy made a rational choice, her children were the only thing keeping her from taking her own life, and she left them in the basement and went upstairs to finish what she'd planned for herself.  Nine women and three men deliberated three and a half hours on their first day and went home without a verdict. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and defense attorney Bob Motta join Tony Brueski to argue over whether the state's own witnesses ended up handing the defense its case. Links & Disclaimer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Duane “Keffe D” Davis spent eighteen years narrating his own guilt — to federal agents in a 2008 proffer, to Las Vegas police in 2009, to a documentary crew in 2017, and in a 2019 memoir he marketed as the real story behind Tupac Shakur's murder. A Las Vegas jury heard all of it, deliberated for roughly three hours, and came back with first-degree murder. No weapon was ever recovered. No Cadillac was found. There were no phone records and no surveillance footage. The entire case rested on a man talking, over and over, until his own words became the evidence against him. His defense team knew that was the problem. Their closing argument ran almost two hours, built around a single idea: that everything Davis told police, cameras, and readers for nearly two decades was fabricated. The jury rejected it. Davis now faces life in prison at his sentencing, and he's already told the court he intends to appeal. Here's what makes this bigger than one conviction. Davis is also the man who first put Sean “Diddy” Combs inside the Tupac Shakur story, alleging a million-dollar offer for the killing, funneled through a now-deceased Harlem contact. Combs has denied any involvement, and police have said he's never been named a suspect. Every other person who might independently confirm or contradict what Davis said about Diddy is gone. So a jury just decided Keffe D was believable enough to convict on his own words — while his own attorneys spent two hours arguing he can't be trusted at all. Both things are now true in the same courtroom, and that contradiction isn't going away quietly. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On April 25, 2024, Mica Miller served her husband, Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, with divorce papers. Forty-eight hours later she was found dead at a North Carolina state park, in what was ruled a suicide. She had already told a friend that JP threatened to put a bullet in her head and stage it as her own doing. He was verified in Charleston at the time and has never been charged in her death. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott explains why that 48-hour window is the most dangerous point for anyone trying to leave a controlling partner — the moment an abuser's grip is most threatened. The next morning, JP preached a full service to his congregation before saying anything about his wife's death. He later claimed he'd tried to raise her from the dead. Four days after that, he was seen at a bar with congregant Suzie Skinner, whose wheelchair-bound Army veteran husband had drowned in a community pool in September 2021 after confronting JP about an alleged affair. He married Suzie thirteen months later. This pattern reaches back further than most people realize: Mica moved to Myrtle Beach at 15, went to work at Solid Rock Church, and told police JP had controlled her since she was a child. A federal indictment filed in December 2025 alleges seventeen months of cyberstalking, tracking devices, and financial and medical interference. Mica filed at least eight police reports. JP still held healthcare power of attorney over her. His federal trial is scheduled for October 2026. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Twenty minutes. That's how long prosecutors say Lindsay Clancy had after sending her husband Patrick out for a CVS run and Thai takeout — and, they argued, exactly how long it took her to kill their three children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan, in the basement of their Duxbury home. ADA Jennifer Sprague told the jury of nine mothers and three men that timing a pickup order, a pharmacy stop, and three separate acts inside one twenty-minute window proves calculation, not psychosis. The defense pushed back hard: organized behavior and psychosis coexist every day in hospitals across the country, and a woman can plan a takeout run while still being controlled by something she can't fight. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta of Defense Diaries watched it all unfold from inside the courtroom across five weeks and more than eighty witnesses — close enough to see the jury's reaction in real time and watch Lindsay's demeanor shift through the hardest testimony. He tells Tony Brueski which argument actually carried weight with the parents on that jury. The stakes were personal for millions watching: Lindsay had been prescribed more than a dozen psychiatric medications in the months before, documented her symptoms in a journal, and told multiple providers she was having intrusive thoughts about harming her children. The defense says the medical system failed her. The prosecution says reaching out for help proves she knew exactly what she was doing. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Massachusetts already ran this exact experiment once. Andrea Yates killed her five children, was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and has remained committed for more than twenty years without ever walking out. Defense trial attorney Bob Motta says that precedent is the real story behind the Lindsay Clancy case — not which of the five verdicts the jury eventually lands on. Motta sat through the entire five-week trial and breaks down what each option actually carries: prison with no parole under some outcomes, indefinite psychiatric commitment under others. Lindsay Clancy has already been living that second reality at Tewksbury State Hospital since the day her three children — Cora, Dawson, and Callan — died, paralyzed from the waist down after her own suicide attempt on January 24, 2023, medicated daily, and evaluated once a year. The defense has never disputed the physical facts of that day; the only real fight left is over what was happening in her mind. Motta also breaks down the malpractice lawsuits Lindsay and her husband Patrick filed against her medical providers, and whether the criminal verdict changes anything about those. If the current jury can't agree, defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis says a retrial isn't the only road left. Plymouth County DA Timothy Cruz could pursue one — Massachusetts moved fast on exactly that in the Karen Read case — but Lindsay Clancy could also waive her right to a jury and let a single judge weigh the psychiatric evidence instead of twelve people who couldn't agree on it. Faddis also revisits Kevin Reddington's failed bifurcation motion, which could split any retrial into a guilt phase and a responsibility phase entirely. Two attorneys, two outcomes, and a case where the ending may already be written. There's a woman who already lived through the exact legal question hanging over the Lindsay Clancy case — she killed her five children, was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and has stayed locked up for more than two decades since. Her name is Andrea Yates, and defense trial attorney Bob Motta says her outcome is the closest thing to a preview of what happens to Lindsay Clancy next. Motta sat through all five weeks of the Clancy trial and breaks down the five verdicts this jury was choosing between — not guilty, not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter — and what each one actually means day to day. Some paths lead to prison with no parole. Others lead to a psychiatric commitment with no maximum sentence, annual evaluations, and a locked ward that looks a lot like the one Lindsay Clancy has been living in since her children — Cora, Dawson, and Callan — died and she tried to take her own life on January 24, 2023. Motta also unpacks the malpractice lawsuits she and her husband Patrick filed against her medical providers, and what a criminal verdict could mean for those cases. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis covers what happens if the jury can't get there at all. A retrial is the obvious move — Massachusetts just retried Karen Read within minutes of her own deadlock — but Lindsay Clancy also has the option to waive a jury completely and let a single judge decide. Faddis explains why that changes everything, and why Kevin Reddington's already-denied bifurcation motion might get a second look. Two guests, one case, and a defendant who may already know how this ends. Links & Footer Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to explain what clinicians call the deadliest window — the period right after a victim tries to leave, when an abuser facing what's known as a narcissistic injury becomes most dangerous. Mica Miller served her husband, pastor John-Paul Miller, divorce papers on April 25, 2024. She was found dead forty-eight hours later at a North Carolina state park, in a death ruled a suicide. She had told a friend JP threatened to put a bullet in her head and make it look self-inflicted. He was verified to be in Charleston at the time and has not been charged. He married Suzie thirteen months later, with armed guards and no children present. Scott also addresses psychological homicide — the theory that a person can be driven to death without a hand ever being raised. Mica had told police JP controlled her since she was a child, filed at least eight police reports, and was still under his healthcare power of attorney when a December 2025 federal indictment detailed seventeen months of alleged cyberstalking. Tupac Shakur's murder just got a verdict, and it's not the one Duane “Keffe D” Davis's own defense team was hoping for. A Las Vegas jury took roughly three hours to convict Davis of first-degree murder — after his lawyers spent almost two of those hours in closing arguments trying to undo eighteen years of Davis talking. A 2008 federal proffer. A 2009 police interview. A 2017 documentary. A 2019 memoir sold as the unfiltered truth. Prosecutors never recovered a weapon, never found the Cadillac, never pulled phone records or surveillance. They didn't need to. Davis had already told the story himself, repeatedly, on the record. The jury believed him enough to convict. His own attorneys argued he'd been lying the entire time. Both can't be fully true, and that's the mess this verdict leaves behind — because Davis is also the source of the biggest name attached to this case outside his own: Sean “Diddy” Combs, who Davis has accused since 2008 of offering a million dollars for the hit. Combs has denied it. Police have said he's never been named a suspect. And the people who could independently back up or shoot down Davis's version are dead — his alleged Harlem contact, the other men said to be in that Cadillac, all gone. Davis faces life in prison at sentencing and says he'll appeal. He's also asked for his phone and laptop back. What he does with either one, and what it means for the Diddy allegation he's spent eighteen years repeating, is where this story goes next. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? He joins Tony Brueski to describe what the broadcast cameras never captured: Patrick Clancy's family and Lindsay's own parents sitting feet apart in the same gallery for five straight weeks, the tension in the hallways during recess, and one specific moment when the entire room shifted at once. From there, Bob breaks down the prosecution's central argument — that Lindsay used a twenty-minute window, while Patrick was out for CVS and Thai takeout, to kill Cora, Dawson, and Callan with calculation, not confusion. The defense answered that organized behavior and psychosis coexist constantly in hospitals nationwide, pointing to Lindsay's documented history: more than a dozen psychiatric medications in the months before, a journal tracking her symptoms, and repeated warnings to her doctors that she was having intrusive thoughts about harming her children. Jason Goldman just joined Bryan Kohberger's court-appointed defense team, and his first move was telling PEOPLE magazine that everyone should stop assuming they understand the Idaho murders case. He's being paid with public money, in a case that has already cost Idaho taxpayers more than eight million dollars. Here's what's not in dispute: Kohberger confessed on July 2, 2025, in Ada County — four guilty pleas, four lives taken, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. The judge confirmed it was voluntary. Kohberger gave up his right to appeal. The evidence behind that confession runs deep: a Reddit survey asking real offenders how they picked their targets, peers at Washington State University who flagged him for stalking and intimidating women, cell tower records placing him near the victims' address on roughly two dozen late-night occasions before the attack, and DNA recovered from a knife sheath left beside one of the bodies. Twelve months after sentencing, Kohberger filed a jailhouse petition claiming he'd been tricked into confessing — with no supporting evidence attached. The Goncalves family called him a narcissist. Now a judge has scheduled an evidentiary hearing for June 2027, and Kohberger's own hired forensics expert, Sy Ray, says investigators actually missed MORE incriminating cellphone data — and that the death penalty should be back on the table. So what exactly does Goldman think he's found that changes any of that? A new attorney who hadn't even read the file yet has ten months to answer that question in open court. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Lindsay Clancy has never denied killing her three children. The entire defense rests on one question: was she psychotic when it happened? But a separate story has taken over parts of the internet — thousands of people insisting her ex-husband Patrick is somehow responsible instead, despite her admission and surveillance footage that places him outside the home. Criminal defense trial attorney Bob Motta, who was in the courtroom and watched Patrick testify, tells Tony Brueski whether any actual evidence supports that theory, and what legal options Patrick has against people spreading it after his divorce from Lindsay and remarriage. From there, the case moved to twelve jurors — nine women, three men — who began deliberating at Plymouth Superior Court on August 27 and went more than three and a half hours without reaching a verdict. They're choosing between five outcomes: first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, not criminally responsible, or not guilty. A not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict doesn't mean Lindsay walks free — it means commitment to a state psychiatric facility with no maximum term. Andrea Yates has been under that kind of commitment for twenty years. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer breaks down what each option would mean, and how a jury of mostly mothers weighs a case like this one. Both Lindsay and Patrick have already filed separate lawsuits against her medical providers, setting up a civil case that could reach a very different conclusion than whatever this jury decides. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Every part of Mica Miller's life ran through one man, and the Netflix documentary “Death of the Pastor's Wife” finally shows how far back that control went. Pastor John-Paul Miller met her when she was a child — fourteen years older, already married, already her pastor. In a police report filed in February 2024, Mica told officers he had been pursuing her since she was ten. His attorney denies it. The documented timeline: JP officiated her first marriage at eighteen, hired her as his personal assistant, began an affair with her while she was babysitting his own kids, and married her himself in 2017. She became his wife, his employee, and his church's worship leader. Friends now allege he demanded compliance from her multiple times a day and wouldn't let her sleep when she refused. They allege he pressured her into taking testosterone that damaged the voice that once led worship at Solid Rock Church. Family attorney Regina Ward alleges JP went further — putting Mica on his own lithium prescription without her knowledge. Siblings allege he then had her involuntarily hospitalized against her will, and while she was locked inside, took her car, phone, and laptop. Federal prosecutors allege an intimate photo from that laptop later appeared online without her consent. JP has pleaded not guilty to federal cyberstalking charges. His trial is scheduled for October 2026. He has since remarried, to a church member whose own husband drowned in a neighborhood pool in 2021. Mica was thirty years old when she died. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nine women and three men walked into a Plymouth Superior Court deliberation room on August 27 to decide Lindsay Clancy's fate. Three and a half hours later, they walked out with no verdict. Lindsay has admitted to killing her three children — the only question left is whether postpartum psychosis erases her criminal responsibility for it. Five options sit on the verdict slips: first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, not criminally responsible, or not guilty, each carrying a completely different outcome, from life without parole down to indefinite psychiatric commitment. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Tony Brueski live as the jury deliberates, and the two of them don't agree on where this lands. Can nine mothers sentence another mother suffering a documented mental health crisis to life in prison? Is manslaughter the middle ground this jury reaches for? What does a hung jury even mean after four weeks of testimony? Meanwhile, criminal defense attorney Bob Motta — who watched Patrick Clancy testify in person — addresses the surveillance footage placing Patrick outside the home and whether it gives any real oxygen to the online conspiracy theories accusing him instead of Lindsay. Patrick's wrongful death lawsuit against her medical providers is already filed, and if a civil jury finds those providers liable for the same three deaths this criminal jury is weighing, the two verdicts could end up telling completely different stories about what happened. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A man who confessed to four murders and gave up his right to appeal is going back in front of a judge — and it's not for the reason you'd expect. Bryan Kohberger filed a handwritten petition from jail in July 2026 claiming his own defense attorneys, Anne Taylor, Elisa Massoth, and Bicka Barlow, coerced him into confessing. He says they promised prison conditions that never happened and hid evidence he considers exculpatory, including hair found in Ethan Chapin's hand that was excluded through physical analysis but never actually DNA tested. Prosecutors wanted the whole thing dismissed without a hearing. Judge Steven Hippler — the same judge who accepted Kohberger's guilty plea back in July 2025 — said no. A status conference is set for June 3, 2027, with a full evidentiary hearing on June 17. Here's where it gets stranger: Sy Ray, the digital forensics expert Kohberger's own defense team hired, told reporters investigators missed even more incriminating cellphone geolocation data placing Kohberger near the house before the murders — and said flat out he believes Kohberger would be convicted again. Ray wants the death penalty back in play. Kohberger's new attorney, Greg Rauch, was appointed in August 2026 and hadn't read the case file or even spoken to his client yet. He has ten months to prepare for a hearing where Kohberger's former lawyers could be put under oath and forced to say, on the record, exactly what they told their client and when. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Nightbird, joins Tony to walk through a timeline most people watching “Death of the Pastor's Wife” can see but may not fully understand. According to a police report Mica Miller filed in February 2024, pastor John-Paul Miller had been pursuing her since she was ten years old — fourteen years her senior, already married, already her pastor. His attorney has denied the allegation. What the Netflix documentary lays out next is its own kind of evidence: JP officiated Mica's first wedding at eighteen, brought her on as his personal assistant, started an affair with her while she was babysitting his own children, and married her himself in 2017. Every role in her life — wife, employee, worship leader at Solid Rock Church — ran through the same man. Friends allege he demanded compliance from her multiple times a day and withheld sleep when she refused. They allege he pushed her onto testosterone that damaged her singing voice. Family attorney Regina Ward alleges he later put her on his own lithium without her knowledge. Siblings allege an involuntary hospitalization followed, and that her car, phone, and laptop were seized while she was locked inside. Federal prosecutors allege an intimate photo from that laptop surfaced online without her consent. JP has pleaded not guilty to federal cyberstalking charges, with trial set for October 2026. Scott breaks down what that full timeline clinically represents — and why a pattern like this so often goes unrecognized until it's too late. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? John and Julie Schwartz Gottman have followed 3,000 couples, some of them for twenty years, second by second, and in this conversation Shan brings them something that research was never designed to answer: what happens to a generation that has decided love isn't available to them, and has built community around that belief instead?  Julie's answer is that those groups are writing each other a prescription for how to stay alone, and she says it with a tenderness that's hard to argue with. From there the three of them get into why criticism sabotages the exact thing you were trying to be heard about, why listening to a woman's anger is one of the strongest predictors of a relationship improving over time, and what John pulls out of his back pocket every time Julie says the four most terrifying words in the English language.  This one is for anyone who has started to suspect that being right about dating and being loved are not the same project. ____________ Ready to reach your goals? The prosecution's case for premeditation depended on proving Lindsay Clancy was clear-headed when she killed her three children on January 24, 2023. Their strongest evidence: she sent Patrick to CVS and a Thai restaurant, creating a twenty-minute window. ADA Jennifer Sprague argued that a woman being controlled by a hallucinated voice cannot plan a pickup order, time a pharmacy trip, and carry out three separate acts in that span. The defense called that argument a misunderstanding of psychosis. Kevin Reddington told the jury that organized behavior and psychiatric crisis coexist every day in every hospital in the country. He showed the jury a chart of Lindsay's prescriptions — over a dozen psychiatric medications prescribed by providers who were not coordinating her care. He showed her journal entries from December 2022, one month before the killings, where her handwriting had deteriorated into scrawl.Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta was in the courtroom for both arguments. He joins Tony Brueski to examine which version the parents on the jury appeared to believe. Bob walks through the medication evidence, Lindsay's documented attempts to seek help, and the prosecution's argument that reaching for treatment proves she understood what was happening — not that she was sick.Lindsay told her doctors she was having intrusive thoughts about harming her children. She checked herself into two hospitals. She was prescribed medication after medication. The prosecution called it a cover story. The defense called it a system that destroyed her.Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Jonathan Adler returns: The minimalist inside the maximalist

Jonathan Adler was one of our favorite guests, so we've been angling to get him back ever since. He started as a potter and now designs furnishings and interiors that are decadent, but layered with meaning and humor. A lot has happened since we last spoke: he had a retrospective at the Museum of Arts and Design — the same institution whose gift shop took a chance on his pots 32 years ago — and launched a sprawling collaboration with Michaels, which he calls a temple of craft. Find bonus content and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/jonathan-adler-returns We talk with Jonathan about what it felt like to stop making long enough to curate three decades of his own work, why he's grateful he chose commerce over the gallery world, and whether people really are trading doomscrolling for making things with their hands. Along the way, we talk about his father, the lawyer who painted — and why the maximalist you think you know insists he's a minimalist. Also, much like our last conversation with Jonathan, there are some instances of adult language and humor, so if you have kids around it might be a good idea to throw on some headphones. Bio Potter, designer, and author Jonathan Adler launched his namesake brand after leaving his day job to pursue his first love: pottery. In 1993, Barneys bought his collection of pots, and five years later, he opened his first store in Soho. Today, Jonathan Adler is a design company with retail locations worldwide, a thriving e-commerce site, a full slate of residential and commercial projects, and a global wholesale business. They strive to create luxe and livable interiors that are seriously designed, but don't take themselves too seriously. Earlier this year, the Museum of Arts and Design mounted a retrospective of his work, presented in dialogue with pieces he curated from the museum's own collection. He lives in New York with his husband, the writer Simon Doonan. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. Here in this (free) subscriber series episode, Christa goes deeper into how self-erasure takes root for each of the nine types in this subscriber episode released for our entire audience. For a lot of women, it started early, praised for being easy, agreeable, and self-sacrificing, until saying no felt impossible. That's not always humility. Sometimes it's a wound wearing the costume of virtue. She looks at how coercive control and narcissism find and exploit that shadow, and how faith language gets twisted to keep a person silent. Then she turns toward healing, telling yourself the truth, finding a safe voice, and slowly rebuilding a self that's allowed to want, feel, need, and say no. Listen here! Serving is beautiful, but there's a shadow side to it, the point where selflessness turns into self-erasure and a person, more often a woman, slowly disappears inside their own marriage or role. In this episode, Christa gently names coercive control, the slow stripping away of a person's freedom, voice, and even their grip on reality, and how it can hide behind spiritual words and show up alongside narcissism. She reframes boundaries as part of how love stays healthy and safe, sometimes even lifesaving. If this names something you're living, you don't have to carry it alone. Christa shares real support, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You were never meant to disappear. You were meant to be seen, safe, and whole. Listen here! Watch on YouTube! Matthew Brennan is having a fantastic first Grand Tour. Stage 11 takes the race 153.8km from Cartagena to Lorca on a mostly flat day, with just one climb standing between the peloton and another expected bunch sprint. The breakaway gets clear early, but Visma-Lease a Bike never let them build much of an advantage, keeping the escapees firmly within reach. The only real test comes with 40km to go as the race hits the Alto de Aledo. The pace ramps up, riders are dropped, and there are a few attacks, but the main sprinters survive, setting up another showdown in Lorca. And once Visma hit the front in the closing kilometres, the outcome looks almost inevitable. Wout van Aert leads out Matthew Brennan perfectly, and the young Brit delivers again, comfortably beating Bryan Coquard to take his third stage win of the Vuelta. We get into Brennan's hat-trick, Visma's brilliant lead-out, the late climb and attacks, and why the team continues to look almost unstoppable in the sprints. And we also hear from Ned Boulting on the ground Stage 1 of the Tour of Britain. Pete Kennaugh and David Millar break down Stage 11 of the Vuelta a España. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
