When looking into tethered oral tissues, it is easy to focus entirely on visual structural appearance. However, judging a restriction by looks alone frequently misses the true clinical picture. Real progress happens when healthcare providers shift the diagnostic paradigm away from what a tie looks like and focus entirely on how it affects dynamic function over a patient's lifespan. In this episode, Hallie sits down with Dr. Richard Baxter, DMD, MS, FAAPD, a board-certified pediatric dentist, founder of the Alabama Tongue-Tie Center, and lead author of the bestselling book Tongue-Tied. In this episode, Dr Aarti Soorya explores the nervous system not as something to “fix,” but as something to understand, listen to, and work with.Aarti trained as a physician, became chief resident, and then moved into functional medicine after feeling that conventional medicine was missing something deeper. But even functional medicine, with its labs, supplements, and protocols, didn't fully answer the questions she was asking. Her own experience with insomnia, fatigue, and feeling out of alignment led her toward nervous system work, yoga nidra, and a more compassionate understanding of the body.Together, we explore what happens when the body gets stuck in survival mode, and why symptoms like anxiety, fatigue, digestive issues, low mood, brain fog, insomnia, people-pleasing, and shutdown can all be signs of a nervous system that no longer feels safe.Aarti explains the vagus nerve, fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses, and why stress itself isn't always the problem. The real issue is whether we can recover. Rather than simply “managing stress,” she invites us to think about adaptability: the ability to be with our own physiology without fear, and to gently build capacity over time. This conversation is also full of practical, grounded tools. We talk about yoga nidra, breath, posture, cold exposure, movement, blood sugar stability, rest, play, creativity, connection, and why joy is not a luxury, but part of a resilient system. At its heart, this is a conversation about learning to stop fighting the body and start listening to it. Because sometimes the symptom is not the enemy. Sometimes it is the message. Episode HighlightsWhat the nervous system is and how it shapes how we think, feel, and respond to lifeThe difference between coping, stress management, and true adaptabilityHow chronic stress can contribute to insomnia, fatigue, gut issues, anxiety, and low moodA simple explanation of the vagus nerve and why it matters for overall healthThe four common stress responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fawnWhy symptoms may be messages from the body rather than signs that something is wrongHow yoga nidra helped Aarti recover from insomnia and burnoutPractical tools for building a more resilient nervous systemThe role of joy, play, dance, and connection in healingWhy rest is essential for creativity, repair, and long-term wellbeingChapters00:00 Adaptability and learning to feel safe in your body02:19 Aarti's journey from medicine to nervous system work06:31 Insomnia, burnout, and the missing piece in healing09:46 Understanding the nervous system in plain English14:51 Cortisol, chronic stress, and why symptoms appear17:15 The difference between coping and true adaptability20:49 Signs your nervous system may be dysregulated28:23 Fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and “functional freeze”31:10 How yoga nidra helped Aarti recover from insomnia38:08 Healing without overhauling your whole life41:47 Why joy, play, creativity, and connection matter42:16 Sleep, safety, and listening to your body46:33 Cold exposure, breath, and building resilience53:37 Epigenetics, lifestyle, and personal agency59:49 Dance, movement, and coming back to joyGuest BioDr Aarti Soorya is an integrative medicine practitioner and physician whose work brings together conventional medicine, functional medicine, lifestyle interventions, nutrition, neuroplasticity, and Yoga Nidra.

Join us for this episode of Diverse Thinking, Different Learning as we welcome Liz Angoff Ph.D. to the podcast. Dr. Angoff is a Licensed Educational Psychologist and Diplomate in School Neuropsychology who offers assessment and consultation services for children and families in the Bay Area, California. She wrote the Brain Building Books series and Our Brains, which help neurodivergent children better understand, appreciate, and advocate for their unique minds. Learn more about Dr. Liz and her work at her Explaining Brains website. Throughout our conversation, we talk about how when one child in a family is identified as neurodivergent, the focus understandably shifts to evaluations, therapies, and advocacy, but what about the sibling who is watching it all unfold, quietly forming their own explanations about meltdowns, extra appointments, and uneven attention? We discuss why children are natural "meaning makers" and what can happen when adults leave gaps in the story. Dr. Angoff explains her approach to sharing diagnoses - starting with asking the neurodivergent child for permission before telling a sibling. Dr. Angoff also walks us through how to translate assessment results into language that kids can actually use, including her "highways and construction projects" metaphor for strengths and challenges. Hear how this shared framework reduces blame, increases empathy, and helps siblings see both themselves and each other more clearly. We also address the real questions siblings ask: Why does my brother get more attention than I do? Is this my fault? Does that mean I have it too? Dr. Angoff offers some practical scripts for validating those feelings while reinforcing a powerful message: attention may shift, but love is absolutely not divided. The conversation also covers privacy and how to treat a diagnosis as the child's story to share, as well as how to equip siblings with the language to explain differences to friends without making them responsible for managing everything. Perhaps most importantly, this episode of the show really reframes these talks as an ongoing process rather than a one-time thing. As children grow, their questions change, and so should the conversation.  If you're raising neurodivergent kids and want every child in your family to feel informed, valued, and included, this discussion with Dr. Liz Angoff will surely give you the language, perspective, and practical tools to start! Show Notes: [2:40] - Dr. Angoff talks about how inviting kids into diagnostic conversations naturally raises questions about siblings. [3:00] - Without clear explanations, siblings often invent their own stories regarding what's happening. [3:43] - Early conversations can help reshape harmful narratives and prevent siblings from forming inaccurate roles. [6:00] - Dr. Angoff reflects on how families work best when kids own their story and guide what others learn. [9:36] - Dr. Angoff asserts that concrete, age-appropriate examples can help siblings grasp complicated diagnoses. [10:54] - Dr. Angoff discusses how using shared brain metaphors leads to empathy and mutual understanding between siblings. [13:08] - Highlighting strengths and "construction projects" can help siblings respond with empathy. [16:04] - Dr. Angoff explains how shared brain language reduces blame while ensuring that every child's needs matter. [19:04] - Dr. Angoff explains how openness and reassurance can help siblings feel valued despite unequal attention. [22:03] - Even when attention shifts, love remains constant and intentional! [23:23] - Dr. Angoff asserts that honest conversations can help prevent siblings from believing that they matter less. [25:30] - Families protect diagnostic privacy while equipping siblings to respond confidently! [28:54] - Descriptive explanations of behaviors can help siblings understand and support each other! [29:19] - Dr. Angoff believes that siblings should share responsibility for advocacy while also seeking adult help when overwhelmed. [30:58] - Conversations around diagnosis should happen gradually, focusing on practical and present needs. [33:04] - Hear how stories, visuals, and resources can help families explain neurodiversity in accessible ways. [34:00] - Dr. Angoff believes that empowering language around neurodivergence helps support positive family narratives and understanding.   Links and Related Resources: More Podcast Episodes Episode 137: Helping Kids Understand Their Amazing Brains with Dr. Liz Angoff   Connect with Dr. Angoff: Explaining Brains Dr. Angoff's Books   Join Our Community: Substack

A clinical conversation about the updated recommendations to enhance radiography safety in dentistry.  Special Guest: Dr. Erika Benavides  For more information, show notes and transcripts visit https://www.ada.org/podcast   Show Notes In this episode, we are having a clinical conversation about the updated recommendations to enhance radiography safety in dentistry.   We explore the major changes from previous guidelines, the rationale behind discontinuing patient shielding, the importance of patient‑centered imaging, and practical implications for dentists and academics.   Our guest is Dr. Erika Benavides, a Clinical Professor and Associate Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Radiology, and the Director of the CBCT Service at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. She is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR). She also served as Councilor for Communications of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Chair of the Research and Technology Committee. Dr. Benavides is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the multidisciplinary aspects of diagnostic imaging. She has been a co-investigator in NIH funded grants for the past 10 years and recently served as the Chair of the expert panel to update the 2012 ADA/FDA recommendations for dental radiography. Her clinical practice is dedicated to interpretation of 2D and 3D dentomaxillofacial imaging.    The two-part recommendations were updated by an expert panel which included radiologists, general and pediatric dentists, a public health specialist, and consultants from nearly every dental specialty.  Dr. Benavides shares some of the main takeaways and new updates is that that lead aprons and radiation collars are no longer recommended. This recommendation includes all dental maxillofacial imaging procedures and applies to most patients.  Also, a recommendation to avoid routine or convenience imaging, and focus instead of patient-centered imaging, based on the patients' specific needs. And, when possible, previous radiographs should be obtained.   Dr. Benavides shares that imaging must be patient‑specific, not protocol-driven, and encourages dentists to ask the following questions before dental imaging: "Do we need this additional information? Is this additional information going to change my diagnosis, or it's going to contribute to the diagnosis and treatment planning?"   The group discusses some of the possible challenges, and opportunities, to implement these new recommendations.    Resources:    This episode is brought to you by Dr. Jen Oral Care. Learn more about Dr. Jen.  Read the full clinical recommendations American Dental Association and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology patient selection for dental radiography and cone-beam computed tomography  Find more ADA resources on X-Rays and Radiographs.  Stay connected with the ADA on social media!
