In this special episode of "Pick Dr. Osborne's Brain," I'll discuss the significant issue of estrogen dominance, which occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to other hormones, leading to various health problems. Symptoms include brain fog, memory issues, gynecomastia in men, and skin manifestations like cherry angiomas. We'll dive into the role of diet, particularly the impact of refined sugars, gluten, and excessive carbohydrates, in exacerbating estrogen dominance. Chronic stress and exposure to environmental chemicals, such as pesticides and hormone-laden meats, are also contributing factors. We'll also touch on the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in micronutrients for proper hormone metabolism. Finally, I'll address various health concerns related to estrogen dominance, including its connection to conditions like endometriosis and the effects of birth control on hormone levels.Gluten Sensitive? Managing teen stress is crucial because adolescence is a formative periodmarked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. High stress levels can negatively impact a teen's academic performance, relationships, and mental health, potentially leading to anxiety, depression, or risky behaviors. By teaching teens effective coping strategies—such as time management, mindfulness, and healthy communication—they can build resilience and develop lifelong skills for handling pressure. Supporting stress management early helps teens thrive both in the moment and as they transition into adulthood. In this episode, I speak with Rachel about using Energy Psychology (EP) and Sound Healing (SH) in her psychotherapy work. Rachel describes how she was originally trained psychodynamically and had been in psychodynamic therapy herself. After Rachel learned about EP from her acupuncturist she pursued training in the approach, and found it was very effective with clients. She also worked with an EP psychotherapist and experienced a significant shift. Rachel explains that EP facilitates changes in subtle energy resulting in shifts in behaviors, emotions, physical symptoms, anxiety, PTSD, performance and other issues. Rachel discussed the most well-known EP approach, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Many people have learned it as a technique to help regulate the nervous system. With more in depth training, EFT can be used for a variety of issues one might bring to a therapist. Rachel discusses how she integrates SH into other EP techniques. She has found that it often increases the speed and ease of change. Rachel discussed the significant research support for EP, including numerous double blind, randomized and controlled research studies. Lastly, Rachel shared practical strategies listeners can use to calm their nervous system and also demonstrated the sound produced by her various SH instruments. Rachel Michaelson, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of California with over 35 years of clinical experience. Along with providing individual and group psychotherapy, Rachel is a clinical supervisor and consultant, who specializes in energy psychology and sound healing. Rachel has developed an Energy Psychology protocol called Release Issues Past and Present which she uses with individuals and in groups and teaches to other mental health providers. When working with clients, Rachel often integrates sound healing by utilizing calibrated tuning forks and chimes to facilitate change. For over 25 years Rachel has been providing training to mental health professionals on a variety of topics including Energy Psychology, Sound Healing, trauma informed care, clinical supervision, law and ethics, telehealth, diagnoses, time and paperwork management, and suicide. Rachel is a past chair of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology's Humanitarian Committee.

Here's my go-to for Zinc supplementation: http://glutenfreesociety.org/UltraZincIn this week's episode of Dr. Osborne's Zone, the focus is on the essential mineral zinc and its significant role in various bodily functions. Zinc is crucial for over 300 enzymatic activities, immune function, healing, DNA synthesis, and sperm health. Deficiency in zinc can lead to low testosterone, skin rashes, acne, and increased susceptibility to infections. We'll go over the clinical problems associated with zinc deficiency, such as growth retardation, immune dysfunction, and cognitive impairments. Zinc deficiency can manifest in infants as a specific rash and can also cause chronic diaper rash. We'll also talk about the importance of measuring zinc levels, especially for those on certain medications like steroids and antibiotics, which can deplete zinc. On this episode of DOZ, I'll introduce a comprehensive master class on gluten-free living, emphasizing the importance of understanding gluten and its impact on health. I'll share my experiences witnessing the limitations of conventional medical approaches to autoimmune diseases, particularly those related to gluten sensitivity. Gluten is a significant factor in the rise of autoimmune diseases since the 1950s and we need a broader definition of gluten sensitivity beyond just wheat, barley, and rye. We'll also discuss the complexities of gluten reactions in individuals, the inadequacies of traditional testing methods, and the necessity for patients to engage in informed discussions with their healthcare providers about gluten sensitivity and its potential health implications.Gluten Sensitive? She is committed to supporting innovation in the animal health space and mentoring and supporting young founders and practice owners. Joya Griffin, DVM, DACVD, is an Ohio native and graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. While attending Cornell, she earned numerous awards, including the Dermatology Service Award for her aptitude in clinical dermatology and her research on Malassezia otitis externa. After graduation, she completed an internship at VCA Berwyn and Aurora Animal Hospitals in Chicago where she was awarded the Intern Abstract Award for her presentation on Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Griffin returned to Cornell University in 2007 for a residency in dermatology and, after completing her residency-training program, served one year as an instructor of dermatology teaching fourth-year clinical students as well as lecturing to underclassmen on bacterial, fungal, and immune-mediated skin diseases. Griffin became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD) in August 2010 and joined the Animal Dermatology Group. She has a special interest in fungal and immune-mediated skin diseases as well as feline and equine dermatology. She enjoys lecturing to fellow veterinarians, mentoring residents, and teaching the veterinary students who extern with her. Griffin also stars in the Nat Geo WILD television series, “Pop Goes the Vet with Dr. Joya,” which highlights the challenging and mysterious cases she encounters in veterinary dermatology. Griffin always strives to care for her patients as if they are her own pets and loves building a long-lasting relationship with their pet parents. Outside of work, Griffin enjoys spending time with her family and pets. She is happily married to Forrest Cummings, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), a veterinary internal medicine specialist, and they have 3 children - Caden and boy/girl twins, Coby and Carter. They have two cats, Donut and Peach Coffee, and two dogs, Guri and Magic. She loves traveling, entertaining and working out. Julia Miller, DVM, DACVD, is an Upstate NY native who grew up in the hallways of Cornell's vet school. She tried her hand at vocal performance (opera) in undergrad at Indiana University and in spite of having a blast singing all day long, she decided that her first true love, animals, offered a more stable and satisfying career. She graduated from Cornell's vet school in 2012 and then completed a large animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia. Mixed animal general practice kept her busy for the next few years where she also found herself falling in love with dermatology. She made her way back to Cornell and completed a dermatology residency after which she stayed on as faculty. When not ooing and aaahing over the grossest skin you can find Julia playing with her three bully-breed dogs (the squish!), singing in a rock cover band, or riding any horse that she can sit on.

Today's episode of Dr. Osborne's Zone focuses on Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and its critical role in human health. A deficiency in thiamine can lead to severe health issues, including heart failure, nerve damage, and cognitive decline. Thiamine is essential for converting food into energy and supports various bodily functions, such as eye health, digestion, and muscle contraction.Despite its importance, thiamine deficiency is prevalent, even in developed countries, often overlooked by healthcare providers. Risk factors include high carbohydrate diets, alcohol consumption, and certain medications, particularly among diabetics. We will touch on the need for awareness and testing for thiamine deficiency, as it can mimic other medical conditions. We'll also look at how a balanced diet rich in whole foods is helpful to maintain adequate thiamine levels. Finally, we'll take a look at some recommendations for supplementation!Supplements mentioned in this video:Ultra B1 - http://glutenfreesociety.org/UltraB1B Complete - http://glutenfreesociety.org/BCompleteLipogest - http://glutenfreesociety.org/LipogestUltra MG - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/health-focus/daily-wellness/ultra-mg-premium-magnesium/INA Testing - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/general-health/micronutrient-test-kit/Magnesium Crash Course - https://youtube.com/live/v8-AXmyf1LkGluten Sensitive? This week, I'll be discussing the shortcomings of the current healthcare system, especially the prevalence of symptom suppression through medication rather than addressing root causes of illness. I recently had a personal experience advocating for a family member in an emergency room that really got me thinking about issues with over-medication and unnecessary procedures.
