Quarantini Talks: All About the Enneagram

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2020 40:14

The Enneagram is thousands of years old and is a powerful tool for personal transformation as well as a tool for empathy with even our most difficult relationships. The unique thing about the enneagram is that other personality tests tend to make you feel good and highlight your strengths. The Enneagram does not do that. I always say, “you’ll know what number you are when the description of it hurts your feelings.” This doesn’t work like a PLACEMENT EXAM. ANY number can be partners with ANY other number. And while we’re at it—any number can do any job THEY deem valuable and a good fit for them. So what exactly is it then, you ask? Great question. We’ll take a look at today:What is the enneagram? How does it work? Where does it come from? What are the ways we can use it? PLUS an overview of each number’s strengths, opportunities for growth, paths for development, and each number's “security blanket.” Resources mentioned: Books:The Road Back to You- Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile The Paths Between Us - Suzanne Stabile  The Complete Enneagram - Beatrice Chestnut  The Sacred Enneagram - Christopher L. Heuertz  Podcasts: Enneagram & Coffee - Sarajane Case Typology - Ian Morgan Cron The Enneagram Journey - Suzanne Stabile Music: Sleeping at Last  - they have an entire album where each track is written for a different number on the enneagram. Because being surprisingly unexpected in your business category is the best thing for you… Today we are super excited to pour a mimosa and chat with our girl Ashley of Ashley Rose Clothing! Ashley is surprisingly unexpected. She hand makes all of the children’s clothes in her booming boutique, Ashley Rose Clothing - but here’s the kicker - she is self taught and doesn’t own any tiny humans yet. A little about Ashley Rose: “I'm Ashley, the designer, seamstress and creator of Ashley Rose Clothing. I work to make clothing that combines fashion and function for the littlest ones you love. I started this small business in the spring of 2016 after packing my two suitcases and moving to Hawaii. I found myself with a blank slate filled with endless opportunities after finishing the Peace Corps. I was inspired to create something that was meaningful and embodied my core values of integrity, thoughtfulness and adventure. While my clothing has evolved immensely over the past several years of growth, I've always remained true to my sustainable methods of production. My team and I cut and sew all of our garments locally in Hawaii using only the highest quality fabrics. Quality fabric is significantly more durable, feels better against delicate skin, and gets softer with each wear.  I strive to create thoughtful, well-designed, and long-lasting garments. By ultimately creating seasonless pieces that can be worn a myriad of ways, I aim to discourage the disposable view of clothing that has become increasingly pervasive. My hope is to return to the days of a minimal, functional wardrobe worthy of care and passing on.” - Ashley You can find Ashley on instagram at @ashleyrose and online at ashleyrose.com. Here are some things we’ll cover in today’s episode: How she became self-taught. How she fell into a business category she never expected. How boxes we (and other) put ourselves in - like only a mother could make children's clothes - is hurting you and your business. How a move (or two) can help your business. Some rules she has for running a business heavy in instagram. How to scale your business and think about the future. Here are some things we’ll cover in today’s episode: The struggle in finding quality self development tools and how that gives the genre a bad wrap. Why it’s vital to focus on your inner well being so you can better love those around you. We have a two minutes sideline conversation with our listeners who may come from the Christian perspective. There’s a stigma that self development can have within the church and we want to address why focusing on our inner health is not deifying ourselves. We share many of our favorite tools that have helped us in our journey for self development! Each of these topics will get a deep dive in future episodes, but we wanted you to have a running list of our favorite tools to-date. This all boils down to the fact that we have three finite resources in this life: money, time, and energy. Because we need to be mindful of all three to live the thriving lives we’re dreaming of for ourselves and our families. A little about Taryn: “I definitely am someone who has always been passionate about crafting. In college I majored in fashion design and marketing which evolved into me working in corporate america at an apparel company…but the more I was doing that the more I realized I’m a creative through and through. I needed something that was a creative outlet which is when I started One Crafty Miss. I enjoy helping other women in their creative adventures so I shifted to business coaching from there!” @onecraftymissblog is where she thrives on insta and her content is filled with branding tips, encouragement, and raw life moments we can all relate to. A lot of us struggle with pursuing our passions in the face of potential criticisms, including our own inner critic. Taryn gives us tangible tips along with her own personal perspective on how to build your brand well. Here are some questions she’s answered for you: What are the common fears she sees across her clients as a small business coach? How does vulnerability and authenticity change the game with running your business? Why serial entrepreneurs struggle with living a life of pursuit in a world where they’re often seen as flaky. Why great things actually come from being scared. How do we define (or redefine) success for ourselves and our businesses. Why letting insecurities take over actually impedes your ability to help others. We also discuss the importance of building your business around the life you want and why “you gotta run past the zombies to get to your donut!” Listen above to find out how THAT sentence ended up being a reoccurring theme! 002: The Magic of Knowing Your Brand and Scaling Your Biz

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2019 25:23

Most people are familiar with their horoscope and what I do is I take your branding from day one, being Caffeinated Gypsy, is so much a part of you. The coffee part of what you do is not “just” coffee. It’s sound charged and crystal charged and single-sourced. You want this coffee to have positive energy. You are actually mailing people good vibes!! What did it look like for you to figure out who you are and how to build a brand off of that? It took a long time, but you know what, the biggest hurdle for me was just being comfortable with myself. As a society we’re really taught to pick a box and stay in that box. It took me a while, but I started feeling really suffocated in my job and for me to realize that’s not who I am. I’m not supposed to do the same thing every day. I was created to do one thing. Anybody who is truly successful will tell you, you need to be authentic. Even if it’s scary. You look at the people who are successful and they weren’t the people who followed the crowd. There’s a lot of courage in that. I think the biggest hurdle was myself. You’ve got thing “I’m going to put myself out there and the right people will resonate.” Sometimes it’s the people who are around you. As you grow, not everybody is going to be able to grow with you. As you’re figuring out who you are at your core and your subtracting things that are no longer serving you, it can really impact your relationships. What was that like for you? When you were going through these changes and figuring out who you were, what was that like in your relationships? You know, it was challenging. Me and my husband have been together for so long at this point, we’ve worked out the kinks, but early on when I was figuring out who I was, he didn’t know who I was! He’s always been really good about supporting me, but it was challenging in our relationship and in being a mom. I think it’s really important to have a partner that’s willing to grow with you. It wasn’t as much about me changing, as it was more about a fear of losing me. Scalability is really tricky with a business. Did you always plan on scaling out yours or did it happen organically? I had a plan and a lot of ideas, but a lot of that went out the window. I had figure out what was really true to my brand. It some ways maybe this hindered me from growing more in the last year, but I thought, you know, if it takes a little longer at least I’m staying true to my brand. Now I’m just really following my gut on things. If an opportunity presents itself and I feel good about it and I feel like I’m putting out there what’s true to my brand then I go with it. I wanted a place where I could bring people together and I knew that Patreon was a great place to start. Anytime you’re building a community of people you’re looking at loyalty and that to me I think was the biggest piece of this. I got to see who is really supporting me and who is interested in what I have to say. Now I know these are my people. When you start to get discouraged just take a break. Don't quit, just take a break. These are the moments you have to stop, rejuvenate your soul, and take care of yourself. 001: Female Friendships are Hard

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2019 40:36

Every night in college is a slumber party…and then adulthood hits and I want to have a slumber party with my girlfriends, but we’d have to plan it three months out. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m okay taking out my planner and just putting a date in because it is just so live giving when it actually happens. This whole episode came about mostly because this podcast would not have happened if we didn’t put assumptions aside and realize that friendship is more important so we really want to speak to that and some helpful tips and unpack what this is so hard. Social media is the worst at connecting us if you’re in an unhealthy mindset. They call it the highlight reel. It’s hard when we’re looking at our life and we don’t want to connect with these people who look untouchable. We get into our own little lonely holes where we don’t want to connect when the I feel like the opposite is what needs to happen. It can connect us, but like you said, you have to be in a healthy state and you have to be willing to show up and be authentic. I’m kind of done being sold to as far as people living perfect lives, because we’re not perfect. We want to be authentic and that is what is driving this desire to build a community of women who want to impact or change their lives or be something better than what they are. You have to market to millennials differently now because they can instantly spot when they are being sold to. It’s gotten out of control. Let’s bring back the realness and the non-judgementalness and just have fun. That is the “barefaced” to the Barefaced Brunch. That’s why our name is so us. The assumptions and the feeling judge is really the theme for today and the underlying root to why female friendships are hard. Assumptions really could have been the undoing of our friendship. On my end, I saw you move to Hawaii and I was happy for you (but sad for me) and every time you posted on Instagram it was like you were living your best life, but it made feel like over time that you had moved on from our friendship and that my friendship was not a service to you anymore. So all my own self doubt starting sneaking in. Last spring my life felt like it was gone to heck in a hand basket and because of that I felt like I had such a not-instagram-worthy life. I was really struggling and felt like I couldn’t show up as a good friend regardless. Which is such a self-defeating way of looking at it, but in the moment it felt really real. We pushed passed those assumptions and decided our friendship was more important. We didn’t know how to navigate the waters of this friendship that felt new again. We still wanted the same things for each other and to do life with each other, hard core, even though we are so far away. If someone is on your heart reach out to them for sure because as we’ve learned they’re probably thinking the exact same thing. She has this phrase (Brene Brown) “What is the story I am making up in my head right now. We were both making up these stories about each other that were completely 100% false. When we talk about holding back and assumptions there’s a lot of reasons why we do that. Most of the time we’re doubting ourselves. Sometimes we thing that friendships shouldn’t be hard and ultimately yeah, you really do have to cultivate them. You think about the word cultivate, it originally applies to farming. Farming isn’t easy work, my friends. I think it’s important to note that work means it takes effort. It should be a positive effort because it takes time, but it shouldn’t be emotionally draining or hard as in it shouldn’t make you feel bad or they shouldn't make you feel guilty for the way you are a friend. It just takes effort. One of the things that I did that I think has helped be a better friend to those in my inner circle is to cut down the distractions of periphery acquaintances. Here’s a challenge for all of you, if you instantly feel some negative way about someone as their photo passes your feed, instantly mute them. It works wonders.  I really want to tie in social media with time blocking your day when it comes to productivity. You have to guard your time and your emotional health. We have finite resources. There’s the finite resource of time, the finite resource of money, and the finite resource of our emotional bandwidth. Time and emotional bandwidth get ignored so easily.  We have got to assume the best of our friends. We have to think better. Maybe they’re going through a really hard time? We have to take ourselves out of this and not jump to conclusions. I genuinely think that grace is pivotal to friendships. Competition can really get in the way of friendships. Don’t be afraid to skip the small talk and really dig into life with somebody. I think that takes bravery, to really go there with someone but it’s so refreshing when I encounter it. If you have people in your life that you feel you can’t be vulnerable with then maybe ask that question. Why am I feeling that way? Is there a lack of trust there? Is it not a healthy relationship? Is it one of those friendships that you've had for a long time so you keep around but it’s turned unhealthy? Take a moment and really take stock of those friendships.  When I am in a terrible case of comparisonitis, I have started curing it with comments on social media. In a genuine way I will go and I will comment on everyone I see. Not sure if it’s the power of positivity thinking, karma, spreading kindness, but it fuels my soul. Besties surprise me all the time. You cannot assume when you meet people where the friendship might go.  Brunchie fact! The best way to make coffee at home? Phinny’s espresso machine. Tori’s Chemex Pour Over. Tori’s French Press.
