Attachment & Authenticity - Navigating Human Connection Part 5

“A lot of the conflict you have in your life exists simply because you're not living in alignment; you're not being true to yourself.” - Steve Maraboli Attachment and authenticity, our two needs as human beings that if not managed well can lead us to living the lives we do not want. Being authentic gives us freedom, joy, and fulfillment but it is quite challenging to do, for when we become really attached to this world, our current operandi is to never be ourselves. Although attachments help us survive, they can also limit us from being who we were meant to be. We need to be more aware and accepting of the attachments we have and let go of those that do not serve us. Being true to ourselves is a decision we must consciously and intentionally make every single day. These are just some of the points that Dr. Ray Sylvester and I have been delving into in the past few weeks as we started a new series of podcasts centering on the all-important subject of attachment and authenticity. Join us today, as we embark on the last part of this sequence, but not the last stop of the journey to discovering your true self. Learn how you can turnover your negative attachments, maximise your talents or your unique gifts, and most significantly transform yourself. Stop holding yourself back. Be uniquely you. Highlights: Disproportionate attachments can have negative impacts on someone's progress. To be authentic is to deliberately commit to time with self and to be present in a moment. We limit our potential when we make our attachments based on competition. Talent needs perseverance and passion to grow. Transformation comes from the renewal of the mind. Important stories: 3:16 Attachments that limit us. 6:50 The decision to be authentic. 17:15 Unintentionally intentional. 24:48 The need to persevere with the talents you have. 40:08 Authorship and authenticity. 47:50 Being born with authenticity. Send us a message and tell us what is your biggest takeaway about this episode.  ------------------------------------------------- Check out my brand new 30 Day Kick Start Challenge! This episode's title was said - unironically, because that's who she is - by a beloved colleague of mine in her last-ever posting in social media. During today's episode you'll find out more about her. Also, friend-of-the-podcast Janine Halloran has invited me to be the guest expert in her wonderful Community Hub! Janine writes: "Kay's second book, Waking Up, is about her identity shift from a helicopter parent (living for everybody else) to becoming her whole, strong, unapologetic and true self. "We'll discuss our well-being and how much more supportive we are for others when we are in a place well-being ourselves. This is not easy to accomplish… We'll talk about what that could look like in our complex modern lives. "There will be time for Q&A at the end – join us live so you can ask Kay your questions!" The week focusing on the USA National Parks can be a great reason to get the planning and excitement around visiting parks all year long regardless if solo or sharing with others. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a first-time visitor, here are five ways to enhance your National Park experience and make lasting memories.   5 Ways to Make the Most of A Park Visit Discover Hidden Gems: Every National Park is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered. Before your visit, take some time to research the park you'll be exploring. Look for lesser-known trails, scenic viewpoints, or unique activities that will make your experience unforgettable. Whether it's a secluded waterfall, a historic landmark, or a rare species of wildlife, there's always something new to discover in our National Parks. Volunteer or Practice Conservation: Give back to the parks that give us so much by volunteering your time and energy. Many National Parks offer volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups looking to make a difference. Whether you're helping with trail maintenance, participating in a beach cleanup, or assisting with wildlife monitoring, your efforts will contribute to the preservation of these precious landscapes for future generations to enjoy. Embrace Innovation and History: National Parks are not only showcases of natural beauty but also repositories of history and innovation. Take some time to learn about the innovative projects that were undertaken when the park was established and how they have shaped the landscape we see today. From the construction of iconic landmarks to the implementation of sustainable practices, these stories of innovation will deepen your appreciation for these incredible places. Engage the Next Generation: Inspire a love of nature and conservation in the next generation by involving youth in your National Park adventures. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or mentor, create an action plan to engage young people in learning about the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Plan activities like nature hikes, wildlife spotting, or educational programs to help them connect with the outdoors and become stewards of the land. Capture Memories Through Art: National Parks have long been a source of inspiration for artists of all kinds. Take advantage of this creative muse by honing your artistic skills during your visit. Whether you're a painter, photographer, or poet, let the beauty of the park inspire your work. Experiment with different mediums, from watercolors to digital photography, and capture the essence of the landscape in your own unique way. Just remember to respect wildlife and keep a safe distance, especially during sensitive times like mating season. By embracing these tips, you can make the most of National Park Week and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime whenever visiting a park or historical location on your next adventure. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to explore the wonders of America's National Parks!   REVOLUTIONISING AGRICULTURE: The Journey from Corn Fields to Mars The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Groundbreaking Initiative   Revolutionizing Agriculture with this groundbreaking initiative at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is aiming to cultivate the "first acre of corn on Mars' soil." Discover how insights from growing food in space could revolutionize Earthbound farming techniques, shaping the future of agriculture. The importance of leading well during times of change (of which there is a lot of at the moment!) and the importance of leaders looking after their own wellbeing as part of leading well.  A recent study interviewed 20 CEOs from leading companies in the USA. It showed that really effective leaders helped improve team and individual performance and helped the organisations do really well.  On the flip side, leaders who were burnt out or stressed passed this onto their team. They tended to be closed off to new ideas, create a negative psychological climate, and make decisions based on anxiety and avoidance.  This highlights the need for leaders and organisations to make sure leader's mental wellbeing is a priority. Leaders should consider this as a core part of their job and actively schedule it in.  It's helpful for leaders to make sure they have good social connections outside of work and ideally a peer network across their business that they can talk openly with as they're often not able to share everything with their team.  Important to be predictable in their role and part of this is managing their own emotional expression, but what do they do with the “residue” of this? Getting professional coaching/supervision can be really helpful in this domain.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be attained only by someone who is detached.” - Simone Weil Are you merely surviving? Would it not be great if you were thriving? We survive through our attachments but thrive by being authentic. Authenticity is being true to yourself, and standing up for your values and principles in the metaphysical state. It is the result of who you think you are and the things to which you are attached. There is nothing better than finding our own unique gifts and sharing them with others. We can all contribute and make the world a better place in our own distinct way. However, most of us are governed by our attachments because of the enormous impact of what we are told and the trauma we experience. This prevents us from discovering our true potential. For us to be who we truly are, we need to be aware of our negative attachments, detach from them, and find positivity. Join us in today's episode to gain more insights on how you can master a balance between the two human needs. Dr. Ray Sylvester and I will delve deeper into this incredibly significant subject. This is the fourth part in a series of podcasts. We encourage you to listen to the whole sequence to understand more how your attachments affect you as well as how you can fulfill your need for authenticity. Be kind to yourself. Be the best version of you. Highlights: Detaching does not invalidate attachments. Attachments are connected to our five senses and are evidence-based. We can master a balanced perspective on managing setbacks by being kind to self while recognizing where you are. The sixth sense is the origin of movement toward authenticity; it is a deeper form and sense of self. Being in a deep contemplative state allows us to break away from fear and the association of experiences as well as find our potential. Important stories: 1:28 Detaching from attachments to be authentic. 4:48 Negative attachments in life. 10:31 Setback, relapse, denial, and recognizing attachment. 18:28 Identity with a better version than the current self. 22:40 Living the challenges now. 24:55 Choosing authenticity and having faith to find your own way. 37:15 The balance between engagement and disengagement in today's times. 41:36 Making attachments positive. Understanding cognitive style, triggers, and attachment styles is important. How alexythymia can impact conflict and conflict resolution. Is your conflict gridlocked? 6 questions to consider asking each other after a conflict: 1) What do you believe about this issue that you're fighting about? Do you have some values, ethics or beliefs that relate to your position on this issue?:  2) Does your position on this conflict relate to your history or childhood in some way?: 3) Why is your position on this issue Important to you?: 4) What are your feelings about this issue? (If one of you has Alexythymia you may need more time and space to think about the response to this question).:  5) What is your ideal dream here?  If you could waive a magic wand and have exactly what you want what would that look like?: 6) Is there some underlying purpose or goal for you and what is it? Having a curiosity mindset when working together to repair a rupture is very important. Aphantasia-having a hard time creating an imaginative state. Challenges working to your potential and staying on a career path that will lead to financial success. The importance of boundaries.  There may be some challenges in maintaining employment because the neurodivergent partner needs accommodations at work but doesn't ask for them or understand what they need. The autistic partner may have a black and white narrative about themselves and the world. Selling your soul in employment may lead to depression. Capacity and work schedule need to be discussed. Autistics can have very spiky skillsets. Where is the culture and job situation that fits you? Working hard at the beginning of new employment and not being able to keep up that  pace can lead to burnout. Challenges in employment can deeply impact your self worth and identity. The possibility of being parentified. Take inventory of all you've achieved as well as the things you've overcome. What if our partners are a source for our healing? Heather Brooks, CAPS, SRES, is an aging specialist and community educator focused on helping older adults age in the right place. She shares her ‘secret sauce' for aging well in community—including universal design, age friendly home modifications, respite care, age-tech, and access to crucial social determinants of health. About Heather Heather Brooks is the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) Housing Committee Chair and Founding Chapter Chair for NAIPC in SE Florida. She has spent nearly three decades in real estate, specializing in helping seniors "Modify or Move." She is Certified Aging In-Place Specialist (CAPS)Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and SFR® certifications National Association of Home Builders National Association of Home Builders. Heather is the founder of "How 2 Age Your Way" and "Step Up Housing", connecting communities and promoting affordable housing for seniors. She is actively involved in NAIPC and SE Florida's founding chapter chair. She has been featured on top podcasts like the NKBA Webinar Series, spoken at the International Builders Show and advocate for aging in place through education and neighborhood initiatives. Key Takeaways The nation's housing infrastructure is insufficient to support the aging population. The average home is 44 years old and less than 5% of our nation's housing units can accommodate individuals with mobility issues. Sixty percent of falls happen at home, and one in four adults report taking a fall. Key aging in place features include step free entries and access to a bedroom and full bathroom on the 1st floor. Important home modifications include installing grab bars, non-slip flooring surfaces, improved lighting, multi-level countertops and replacing doorknobs with lever handles. Universal design goes beyond ADA requirements to design environments that are accessible and usable by all ages and all abilities, whether you have a wheelchair or a stroller. Age-friendly communities are huge drivers of aging well. They encompass more than the home you live in. Social determinants of health like access to transportation, medical care and connections to family and friends are crucial for healthy longevity. There are 4,130 licensed adult day centers in the US servicing 237,000 people daily. The industry is experiencing huge growth as families recognize the importance of taking breaks from caregiving. Adult daycare combats caregiver burnout and is significantly less expensive than homecare.

How can you effectively GROW your business as a creative or coach without stepping away from the 1:1 work you love?   On this episode, Sarah Masci shares her journey of restructuring her business from traditional, project-based freelance design work to a day rate model. Sarah started as a web designer in 2005 and eventually realized that she loved the design process so much, she wanted to do more of it. In 2018, she started offering day rates to clients and found it to be a life-changing shift. She later taught this model to other service providers and scaled her business by creating a course. But this shift didn't come without some pain points. Sarah candidly highlights the challenges of scaling, such as building a team and managing a complex program.    Sarah explains that scaling doesn't always mean moving away from one-on-one work, and that it's possible to grow a business by sticking with services you love. Our conversation explores the benefits and challenges of the day rate model for creatives and coaches. Sarah shares her experience and insights on how day rates can simplify business, allow for more focus on the work you truly love, and increase profitability. She also discusses the scalability of day rates and the importance of building trust with clients. Sarah highlights the need for experimentation and learning from the process, as well as the value of being part of a supportive community. She also mentions her excitement about getting back into design work through upcoming offers for her clients.   Key Takeaways • Restructuring your business and shifting to a different model can be a life-changing decision. • Day rates can provide simplicity and productivity, allowing you to focus on one client at a time. • Scaling a business comes with challenges, such as building a team and managing a complex program. • It's possible to grow a business by sticking with one-on-one work if that's what you love. • Scaling doesn't always mean creating a course or building an agency. The day rate model allows creatives and coaches to focus on the work they love and simplify their business. • Building trust with clients is crucial for selling day rates. • Experimentation and learning from the process are key to refining and optimizing day rates. • Being part of a supportive community can provide motivation and inspiration. • Returning to previous creative work or interests can reignite creative joy and fulfillment. • Sarah offers a Day Rate Quick Start program for those interested in exploring the day rate model.   Important links sarahmasci.com Connect with Sarah over on IG Day Rate Quick Start   High-profitability paired with high quality of life is the mission of my business, and it's the focus of my partnership with clients inside SIMPLIFIED.    This coaching and consulting intensive is exclusively for creative entrepreneurs and coaches who want to create 6-figure profit in their businesses – without working all of the time, and without having the stress of mountains of expenses.    Inside SIMPLIFIED, we combine mindset support with strategic simplicity to create a life and business that you don't want to quit. “Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It is about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” - Brené Brown Our attachments begin to form from inception as part of our survival mechanism. They are our way of navigating through the world we live in. However, there are those that limit us from being our authentic selves. It is therefore imperative that we recognise and let go of the ones that do not serve us, as well as understand our necessity for authenticity. How do we do this when our attachments are connected to our everyday interactions? These are some of the points that Dr. Ray Sylvester and I will delve into today's episode. This is already the third part of our new series of podcasts.  Join us in our profound conversations on the incredibly significant matters of identity, attachment, and authenticity. We will also further touch on the impact they have on our lives and the importance of looking at who we are at our core. Nothing is more fulfilling than being true to yourself.  Give yourself time to reflect on the things you are attached to in your life. Stand up for your deeper purpose. Highlights: Thriving is becoming authentic through your own decisions. The need for attachment is stronger than the need for authenticity. Attachment is our way of navigating around this world, while authenticity is finding who you are and having a deeper sense of purpose. Symbolic interaction is a dichotomous assessment of identity. Our reflection space helps us move into authenticity. You are addicted to your attachments if you are busy being busy. Important stories: 2:34 Identity formation. 5:59 Attachments can unknowingly impact our lives. 8:38 The challenges in education in relation to attachment and authenticity. 10:09 My own attachments. 13:20 Moving from social identity to authenticity. 16:55 Dr. Ray Sylvester's attachments. Many kings and queens are given nicknames along with their titles. Juana was the third child of Isabel and Fernando “the Catholics”. Her nickname, “la loca”, or “the crazy one” came from her dramatic outbursts, often related to her husband, Felipe “the Handsome”. The question remains, was Juana really loca? Or was she the victim of circumstances and manipulations well out of her control? This story is told in the third person and the past tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “heredero” (heir), “nacimiento” (birth), “rey” (king), “reina” (queen) and “poder” (power). No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. “As soon as extreme attachment comes, a man loses himself, he is no more master of himself, he is a slave.” - Swami Vivekananda Are you having difficulty getting out of the situation you are in? We all pursue to veer away from where we are, but we often get entangled and instead fall deeper into the conditions we do not want. Although attachments are part of our lives, being overly concerned about them is detrimental to us. It is only when we learn to disengage that we discover our authentic self and gain more peace and fulfillment. Come with us as we venture deeper into the realm of attachments in our pursuit for authenticity. Tune in to this second episode of a new series of podcasts to gain more insights. Learn how to acknowledge and safely detach from the tangible measures that others have imposed on you. Avoid self-destruction. Have the power to stand up for your true self. Highlights: References to us are typically connected to tangible measures that we recognize. People use tangible measures to protect themselves from the view and perceptions of others. Peak consciousness is the ability to explore based on who you are and not on where you are. Deep levels of attachment drown out the ability to hear your authentic self, if they become the most important thing in your life. The easiest we can be is ourselves and the hardest is to be something we are not, but the world teaches us otherwise. If you do not seek support, you could find yourself falling into a deeper state of being attached to where you are. Important stories: 4:15 The tangible and intangible measures in the pursuit of your authentic self. 8:46 Finding oneself again. 16:10 Identifying with and being inspired by David Goggins. 20:30 Empowered not to be attached to anything. 23:19 Acknowledging attachments. 28:58 The cliché in being a self-made person. 33:01 Getting and giving the needed support to get out of where you are. 39:01 Things you can do to avoid compromising your true self.
