Important note: This is the second episode in a series. If you're just joining us, I urge you to go back and start at the beginning.Whether you're dating or in a committed relationship, understanding your and your partner's money mindset is one of the most essential skills you'll learn. Did you know we all have a “financial blueprint”? This blueprint is created and molded in our childhood and is influenced by our family and environment. Two things can happen when creating your blueprint as a child. You see a habit or pattern and you mimic that behavior and adopt it as your own, or you see a habit or pattern and you reject that behavior because you don't agree with it. And for the truly self-aware, you see a habit and pattern, recognize how it has affected your life, and choose your own path. It all starts with the question, “How are you identical or opposite to either of your parent's money habits and ways of being?”This podcast series features Rebel Finance School founders Alan & Katie Donegan. In 2009, the world was falling apart, and my net worth was taking a beating. I thought it would be a good idea to start a personal finance site to help myself and others make sense of chaos. After all, I had spent 10 years working at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse, studied economics at William & Mary, got my MBA from UC Berkeley, saved aggressively, diversified my investments, and still got financially rocked! Since the global financial crisis, more than 90 million visitors have stopped by Financial Samurai to learn, share, and grow. After writing over 2,500 personal finance articles, I've used my knowledge and the perspectives of so many to write an instant Wall Street Journal bestseller entitled, Buy This, Not That: How To Spend Your Way To Wealth And Freedom. The book is your secret weapon to getting ahead in this hyper-competitive world.  You can buy a hard copy on Amazon or any book retailer. Greatest Hits Vol. 7 - Psychedelics and Spiritual Practice

Hey hey, wild and whacky humans! It's my birthday week, and I'm up at the yurt relaxing and celebrating with my family and dear friends. This means I've got something else for you - and it's juicy. If you haven't seen it yet, Netflix just released a new series “How to Change Your Mind,” exploring psychedelics and their effects on the mind. For those of you who have been around for a bit (or who follow me on social), you know this subject is very important to me and my specialty. I've been talking about it for year, but especially with the release of Michael Pollan's series. So, I had to revisit this topic on the podcast with one of my greatest hits: “Psychedelics & Spiritual Practice.” To a lot of people, the words psychedelic and spiritual are paradoxical. But the use of psychoactive substances in shamanic, religious, and spiritual practices is found throughout history, with evidence from thousands of years ago. In this episode, we will be talking about psychedelics and spiritual practice and if there is a helpful role for them…and the potential harm.  Let's start with some definitions:  Psychedelics are a class of psychoactive substances that produce changes in perception, mood and cognitive processes. They affect all the senses, altering a person's thinking, sense of time and emotions.   There are also entheogens, which are typically of plant origin, that are ingested to produce a non-ordinary state of consciousness for religious or spiritual purposes. Some examples of both are psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, ketamine, 5-MeO-DMT, cannabis,, LSD, MDMA… and many more.   I've used psychedelics in clinical settings and have found them to have a unique place in the treatment of mental health disorders. But I'm personally very interested in their use for spiritual purposes. Especially because, in my own clinical experience, many mental health issues have a strong root in spiritual and existential challenges.  So when we really look at the intention for spiritual practice or use of psychedelics, Buddhism and psychedelics share something in common: finding that which frees the mind. There are probably a good amount of Buddhists who would say it's a gateway to a spiritual path, which I certainly agree with (and there's also many who would disagree).  At my alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, there has been decades of research in the use of psychedelics for a variety of purposes, showing promising results in many areas. They've done studies with long-time meditators as well as those who didn't have a previous spiritual practice.   One study by Rolland Griffit's et al. in 2018 wanted to see if the changes noted after receiving psilocybin in personality and other traits were enduring for people without a previous spiritual practice…and not just the short-term result of a great trip.  The results were impressive. I got into more details about the study in the pod, but after 6 months, the groups who received high-dose psilocybin and support for spiritual practice showed large significant positive changes long–term when compared to a placebo group (low dose psilocybin) that also received spiritual practice support. The areas of improvement include interpersonal closeness, life meaning/purpose, forgiveness, daily spiritual experiences, and community observer ratings (how others rated them, not just how they saw themselves…to make sure the changes weren't just perceived by the participant but that others could tell there was a shift as well).  So this – and other studies – show that psilocybin can influence long-lasting /enduring increases in positive social attitudes/behaviors and in healthy psychological functioning.  Isn't that so fascinating?  I want to mention here that there's a big difference between recreational use of psychedelics and intentional use of psychedelics.  I had my own first experience with LSD when I was 15 years old and experimented with it a lot over the course of a few years. That first experience forever changed the way I saw the world – it helped me see that my beliefs and the way I perceived the world was through many filters and that the ideas I had about separation of myself and others were false, and there was a mystical unity to our existence.  I also had – at a later experience – a mystical near-death experience that changed the way I perceived death (and was a lot less fearful of it).   And my difficult experiences (aka “bad trips”) gave me insight into the way my brain could loop and perseverate on things…and how important my mindset was in how I experienced the world.  I had done so many psychedelics by my late teens that I went another 20 years before using them again (I spent that time integrating my insights with many life-changing experiences). When I decided to bring them back into my life again, it was with much more intention, and for entheogenic purposes.  So, while there were some enduring effects for me with recreational use, in my own experience and in my subsequent guiding of altered states experiences, intentional use is a very different experience.  There are several factors we take into account and implement when we intentionally use psychedelics. The mindset of the participant and the guide, the setting, which substance to use and the dosing, the skillset of the guide itself.. and post-experience situation/support as well.  When we skillfully put these things together, I do believe there can be a great benefit.  It's not just about having a great experience, but also support in integrating what arose during the experience and integrating that into our day-to-day lives.  There's a high risk of using psychedelics as a way to escape the challenges of life. We can see this with almost anything that helps us feel better than sitting with a difficult emotion or experience – it happens with meditation, too. I like to remind myself and others to not chase after that meditative bliss experience, because it will be elusive, and that it's a good practice to let go of the attachment and craving.  So…what are psychedelics and spiritual practice (particularly Buddhist practices) contradictory? What often comes up in this discussion are the Buddhist precepts.  These precepts are 5 ethical guidelines are considered the foundation for successful practice because they help to calm the mind and have it be in the est state for meditation and spiritual practice (not lying, not stealing, not killing, no harm from sexual misconduct). The fifth precept is often discussed here: I undertake the precept to abstain from liquor that causes intoxication and indolence.  So here it specifically says alcohol and not other substances. And some people take it literally and others say well, it's more complicated in modern times and it probably was meant to include all mind-altering substances.  Is this…wise? Compassionate?   Some people take precepts very literally, especially in early Buddhism and in many Theravedan schools. Like literally not lying under any circumstance. But other traditions – like Mahayana or Vajrayana – look at it slightly differently, with prioritizing the concept of skillful means and compassion for others as the primary intention. A common example is not lying. If you're hiding an innocent person in your house, and someone comes to kill them and asks if they're in there, is it OK to lie? The Bodhisattva vow would say you break the precept to help the person.   Thinking this way, when we are asking this question about psychedelics and spiritual practice, we can consider is it beneficial – ultimately – to our compassion and ability to help others? At this point, do we have the wisdom to inform this? How does a perspective impact our ability to show up in the world and make it a better place as we walk in it?  What is our intention?  This is why I feel strongly about the intention of spiritual growth.  And of course, we have to have wisdom along with the compassionate intention, because us silly humans can fool ourselves. We can convince ourselves something is beneficial when we don't have the wisdom to make that call yet…but we really want it to be beneficial;) So we have to tread with integrity over these waters.  You know, I used to wonder if after a psychedelic experience, people would later feel, “Oh it was just the medicine, the drug”… but what I've found – at least with guided journeys – is that it's more an affirmation of truth, and experience of truth. The veil has been lifted.  And my hope is that it does encourage more spiritual practice and more dedication to the practice. The science is supporting this.  It's like taking a helicopter ride up to summit instead of a slow climb –  to see the view to see if it's worth it, what's possible. To help one commit to the slow climb that is to come.  After the glimpse or the affirmation, we then continue with the traditional practices instead of trying to grasp at that initial insight again – striving for the meditative bliss experience or having another psychedelic journey.  So do I think there's a role for psychedelics in spiritual practice? Absolutely. AND psychedelics are not for everyone.   I believe in appropriate screening and assessment because there are medical and psychiatric contraindications and situations where they just won't be as beneficial.  AND I strongly believe in the importance of integration – with a coach or therapist who is trained specifically in psychedelic integration (there are also communities that have this support built in, like the Burner community or the Santo Daime church.  It's not just about the journey if you want a higher chance of success at enduring benefit for you and those you come into contact with.  Lastly – and this is important – you don't “need” psychedelics for spiritual growth. What you need is 100% within you. Right now. But they can be a safe, helpful tool along the way in the right context.  Until next week, rebels… Free your mind! In this episode you'll learn:// Are psychedelics and entheogens the same thing?   // The difference between recreational and intentional use  // How science support that intentional use of psychedelics can create long-term positive changes in mindset, personality, social behavior, and spiritual practice  // How psychedelics can be used to benefit spiritual practice  // How to avoid using psychedelics as an escape or a temporary high  // Whether Buddhism and psychedelics are actually contradictory in nature  // Why integration is key in seeing positive long-term effects of psychedelic use Resources:// Buddhism and Psychedelics 3-part YouTube Series: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 // Zig, Zag, Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics edited by Alex Grey & Allan Badiner  // The Secret Drugs of Buddhism by Michael Crowley  // If you want to finally get clear about your unique Soul purpose and how to create a life that supports it during this one precious life we have, apply for the Adventure Mastermind. Many of us get a skull-pounding headache now and then, maybe from stress or after getting dehydrated on a hot day. But some people get recurring headaches that are serious enough to keep them from school or work. About 1 in 5 people get migraines, a type of headache often accompanied by nausea and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Cluster and tension headaches can also interfere with daily life. And, for some people lingering headaches may be part of long-haul COVID-19.  MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with two neurologists about what causes migraines and other headaches and new research into how to treat them. Guests:  Dr. Narayan Kissoon is a neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and an assistant professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He specializes in treating headaches and facial pain.   Yoon-hee Cha is a neurologist with M Health Fairview and an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She specializes in treating headaches and gait and balance problems. Important questions about chronic migraines Is there a genetic connection? "If someone has migraines, their children have about a 50 percent chance of also having migraines,” Kissoon said. “So it's a pretty strong connection. It's due to a lot of different genetics, and it's multiple genes that play a role, but there's a very strong association.” Can a concussion be connected to it? Kissoon said a lot of research has looked into head injuries and concussions in connection to chronic headaches, noting that some studies show similar brain activity that appears during a migraine can appear in “animal models after a head injury.” “We very commonly see people that have headaches after a head injury,” he said. What about our diet? Could that be connected to chronic migraines? Cha said that food can potentially trigger migraines for some patients, and it's not always clear which foods can set it off. That's why a common practice for patients is to chronicle their experiences in a “headache diary” to help narrow down the possible causes. “Sometimes people have unusual food triggers, they're not always the classic ones like red wine and aged cheeses and chocolate, but they are things like asparagus. I had a patient who had migraines triggered by peaches and she had to give up peaches. It's hard to figure these things out unless you look at them prospectively.” How do those who suffer from migraines manage it without it affecting their mental health? “Our general principle is to control what you can and to get help with the parts that you can. Even if you don't have headaches every day, just the lack of predictability of when that next headache can come can have an outsized role in the quality of your life.” Cha said. “Our brain likes predictability.” Finding control can involve getting regular sleep, eating healthy and at the right times of the day, and modulating activity levels. “Getting knocked down in life is a given. Getting up and moving forward is a choice.” - Zig Ziglar Feeling overwhelmed often happens when we expose ourselves to too much stress that our mind and body cannot cope with.  It is a difficult emotion to manage, and it can leave us stuck in a state or place we do not want. Are you feeling overwhelmed right now? How are you coping with it? Do you give in to this feeling? What would happen if you continued to mope around? Where will this feeling of being overwhelmed take you? Will it take you to a better life? Give me a few minutes of your time and listen to what I have to say about this and how you can deal with it. Let me help you triumph over this emotion so that you can have the future you want and be the person you were meant to be. Highlights: ⚡️ Overwhelmed means buried or drowned under a huge mass of something ⚡️ Feeling overwhelmed comes from taking in stress more than our system can adapt to. ⚡️ There is no growth without stress. Stress is a challenge ⚡️ You can either eliminate stress or increase your capacity to take in stress. ↘️↘️ Steps to overcoming overwhelm: 1.      Be aware and look at what you are taking on, what is important vs what is urgent 2.      Be mindful of where you put your attention to 3.      Meditate and believe there is something beyond the challenge 4.      Act 5.      Become committed to who you want to be 6.      Have the courage to decide not to be overwhelmed Important stories:

Yes, this all starts with getting enough sleep at the end of the day, and taking small steps towards getting more. If you are highly anxious, sad, depressed, stressed, etc. ask yourself, “When was the last time I got a sound 8+ hours of sleep?”Develop a morning routine. Get fresh air, journal, sit in silence, meditate, whatever. The point is to devote enough time for setting your day's intentions on the right track. And, in fact, did you know that this is also one of my constipation hacks? Watch it HERE for exactly how I do it.Adequate mineral support. This one Kerrie provided in detail during our conversation. Minerals: calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, sulfur, cobalt, copper, fluoride, manganese, and selenium.Circadian rhythm support. Kerrie also provided this one, which goes along with other simple acts on this list, but she says” 20-30 grams of protein in the morning, natural, bright morning light, and proper sleep hygiene.”Get regular exercise. This is, in my opinion, one of the very best stress relief activities out there. But do remember that if you are also desperate for healing your gut, you need to make it easy exercise vs. strenuous. You don't need intense workouts in order to reap the benefits of exercise for overall health.Tap into emotional needs. Kerrie mentions that one root cause of anxiety is unprocessed emotional needs and neglecting these basic needs.Deep breaths. Breathing is a basic human need. And yet, how often do you find yourself not breathing? HERE is a very simple breathing exercise that you can implement today.Learn a new skill. Find something new to enjoy for overall better health. There are a million things to choose from in our leisure time; you just have to find something for you. HERE are 21 ideas.Self care journal. I swear by journaling for every last thing we can do to increase our health and happiness. More on this below.Create personal goals. There is nothing quite like believing in yourself. YOU are your own best friend and there is no one in the world who can take better care of you than you. So create some personal goals for yourself based on any specific needs. These can include different things like: a) Read three personal development books in the next 6 months. b) Walk 1 mile, 3 days per week. c) Write 100 words in a journal every single day for 30 days.Get off of social media. Seriously. Get. off. of. social media. If you can't live without it, then at least create some guidelines for yourself around your online habits. i.e. read a blog post that will provide me value, “scroll” for 20 minutes or less each day, connect with awesome online community groups who provide productive ways for healing my gut or healthy habits for overall mental health care.Therapy sessions. Whenever possible, I highly recommend regular visits with a therapist. They can truly change your life and address anything and everything for your own needs in all areas of your life.Self-Care Planner Meets Gut Healing JournalIn case you've never had Healing Bloom from Within, the 90-day gut healing journal, let me share with you why it's called that to begin with because it will give you context for why it's also a self-care planner meets gut healing journal:HEALING REALLY DOES BLOOM FROM WITHIN.WITHOUT PROPERLY PLANTING, WATERING, AND NURTURING THE INSIDE, IT'S HARD TO FLOWER ON THE OUTSIDE. IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING GOING ON INSIDE (PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND EMOTIONAL), THE OUTSIDE STRUGGLES.This journal is not just for teaching you how to record food for healing, but it also includes:Space for writing a short gratitude line on a daily basis.Inspirational quotes for further inspiration and motivation.Mini vision board. A page for you to create a mini vision board that you can constantly have with you. I believe the vision board is one way to see our self-care goals come to fruition.Customizable. This journal is a bullet meets healing meets regular journal. In other words, everyone has different needs but I know the pieces that make for a successful gut healing + life journal. My method allows for it no matter what your daily routine is.Take a closer look at this journal, Healing Blooms from Within HERE.  p.s. my book, A Gutsy Girl's Bible: a 21-day approach to healing the gut is also a journal of sorts for personal growth. Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of a trash thought and wondered how you got there? Sometimes when you're in the middle of doing something hard (hitting a big goal, trying to exercise more, getting the kids to stick to a bedtime routine), your brain offers these thoughts to try and seek out comfort. It's not working. I'm not good enough. Nobody listens to me. When in truth - these are just thought patterns you've created in order to remove yourself from discomfort.   And that's ok to a point.   But having these trash thoughts and then choosing to believe them and, in turn - allowing them to alter your course is not ok. Instead, Kristen is encouraging you to call yourself on your own BS. Instead of accepting these stories as facts, she wants to show you how to recognize these thought patterns in order to break the cycle and win the day.   Here's how:   Why being prepared for these thoughts can ultimately crush the pattern Where (and why!) guilt comes into play How to recognize the indications that will alert you when you're engaging in self-sabotage Important questions to ask yourself when stuck in a pattern of self-sabotage   Getting clear on your own BS behavior is the first step. Your brain will default to these same thoughts and feelings over and over when things get hard. And if you can anticipate these thoughts, it will help you to stay on top of your game and out of your own way in order to reach your goals. Thanks for listening! 5 Reasons Why You NEED to Make Time for Health and Fitness

    The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity

As a successful business owner, you probably realize how difficult it can be to make time for yourself. After all, you did start a successful business from the ground up! You are also needed to oversee the day to day functions of your business, which can really cut into personal time. You might not mind working long hours and never getting time to yourself, but there are a few ways in which such a schedule can really impact you… and one of these is in the realm of fitness and physical health. There are a number of good reasons to stay physically active, fit, and healthy… and I'm going to talk about five of them. There may be more good reasons (many more, actually), but these are probably five of the most important. Taking these five reasons into account will DEFINITELY help you to see that it is in your own best interest to stay in good physical condition. 1… You Will Improve Your Overall Health Eating right and exercising helps you in a lot of ways, and keeping you healthy is at the top of them! If you don't eat right and naturally replenish your body's energy and rebuild your immune system, you are going to have far less energy and be far more susceptible to diseases and sicknesses then you would otherwise. By exercising, you will get your body up and moving, which will decrease your odds of developing conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Three of the most IMPORTANT things that you can give your body to ensure that you will be as healthy as possible are… 1. Adequate sleep 2. Nutritious foods 3. Daily physical exercise 2… You Will Lose Weight and Keep it Off Exercise and a healthy diet will also help you to shed those unwanted pounds that you have wanted to get rid of. Losing weight is important if you are overweight, but even if you aren't, it is important to remember that sitting at a desk all day (as a lot of business owners do) can quickly work against your natural metabolism and cause you to gain weight. Getting at least 20 minutes of exercise per day, and eating sensible with well-rounded meals (most of the time) can greatly reduce the risks of you gaining more weight than is healthy or beneficial. 3… You Will Have More Energy Another great reason to take care of your body through exercise and a healthy diet is that you will have a lot more energy when you do so. Do you drink a lot of soda? Do you drink enough water every day? Do you fail to exercise on a daily basis? Just cutting out sugary drinks and adding 15-20 minutes of exercise will make a WORLD of difference for your energy level! You will not BELIEVE how much better you will feel when you can make consistently healthy choices for yourself. 4… You Will be Able to Focus Better Do you ever have trouble focusing on your work? Adding healthy foods to your diet (especially fresh greens, nuts, and berries) can dramatically improve your ability to perform on a mental level. Plus, throwing in a workout 2 to 3 times per week can make these improvements even more pronounced. Don't feel like you have time to work out? Even a brief walk around the block on your lunch break can help you to clear your head, so you can think more clearly and maybe even differently! Getting fresh air is good for you, and the exercise will get your brain chemicals flowing differently than they were before. Consider having organic nuts, an apple, and healthy snacks at your desk so you can eat some in between meals. Doing this can increase your metabolism. 5… You Will be More Confident Confidence is incredibly important to any entrepreneur, which is why it is definitely a good reason to start eating better and exercising more frequently! The better you feel about your body, the more confident you will be… and exercising definitely plays a role in this process. When you exercise, you will automatically be improving how you look in your own eyes, which can be a very valuable experience if you usually have trouble feeling good about yourself. You will feel better, more likeable, and happier when you take time to take care of yourself during the week. Eating right and staying active are INCREDIBLY important to your overall health! Don't skip out on them! Make sure that you give yourself at least a little bit of time every day to exercise and grab a granola bar instead of a donut in the morning. Little choices often make the biggest differences, and you OWE it to yourself to see the benefits of healthy and positive life choices that have to do with your health and physical well-being. All my clients have a health and fitness goal; however, they weren't really tracking their fitness to know what they actually have done so they can measure their progress. The Importance of Rites of Passage

    Rebel Buddhist

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2022 32:51

When I worked for Outward Bound, one of the most rewarding aspects was how it acted as a rite of passage for many of our students. You may have heard of rites of passage from other cultures (Native American vision quests, once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimages in Buddhist, Hindu or Muslin traditions, for example). They're ceremonies or practices that mark an individual's progression from one stage of life to another.  There are generally three phases in a rite of passage:Separation: the individual changes from their current status and prepares to enter a new stage.Liminality: the person is often temporarily removed from their normal surroundings and community to experience tasks or rituals that prepare them for the next stage of life.Incorporation: The person return and is welcomed back into their community with their newly-attained status and responsibilities. It's important to note that a rite of passage in and of itself doesn't make the transformation happen. It doesn't mean you have a rite of passage then, “Yay, you did it, now go forth!” True inner growth and taking on new levels of responsibility are an essential part of rites of passage – and what they're designed to mark, not create. While it's well-researched that there is a lack of meaningful rites of passage in modern industrialized societies for life stages like transition into adulthood, the absence of a ritual to mark those stages still isn't the most significant problem in terms of obstacles to Soul development. Really the rites of passage are meant to confirm a life transition that has already been reached, often through a long steady process of doing this work. So what's more significant is what happens between the life stages than the rites of passage themselves. The primary work of maturing takes place gradually and on a daily basis as we apply ourselves to the developmental tasks of our current life stage.  Children and adolescents need help with these tasks — and who is supposed to help them? Grown-ass, mature adults. Not adults working out their childhood baggage with their own children or, say, having tantrums while they're the President of the United States of America. For example;) So yes, help from mature adults. And that's where I think we're failing right now. So we need to let go of the idea that the transition from childhood to adulthood takes place in one fell swoop. Between these two life stages is the adventure of adolescence. And it's a real adventure. And we miss out on utilizing it as such. Getting older in and of itself doesn't lead to emotional adulthood or psychological maturity. If you asked most people what adulthood means, they'll say things like: when we fulfill certain responsibilities like establishing a career or steady job, moving out of the home, raising a family… But is this…meaningful? In the sense of what being an adult really means when we look at what our society needs? And what kind of responsibility is that?  As Bill Plotkin says, an adult is someone who understands why they are here on Earth, why they were born, and are offering their unique contribution to the broader sense of the world - not just to humans, but to the planet and all its beings. That kind of responsibility that comes with that kind of Soul development. But don't be discouraged - while it's rare - for most in the modern industrialized world, at least -  to reach true adulthood in their teen years, or even twenties, it's totally possible to do so in midlife. In his book, Nature and the Human Soul, Bill Plotkin states there are two really distinct stages of adolescence - and remember, think of this not just as age, but psychological development - and a major life passage between them.  The adventure starts with puberty, and I think we can all agree the change our body goes through, the hormones, the social shifts that happen around puberty, embodying our sexuality… is a wild ride. This continues through the years of early adolescence then transits through the passage Bill calls Confirmation and then goes into late adolescence, which he calls the “Wanderer in the Cocoon.” In the first half of adolescence, the task is to create a personality — a way of belonging to the human community — one that's ideally authentic and socially “acceptable.”  This is hard AF, especially if you're a rebellious one like I am (and like many of you are) and if you're being asked to gain acceptance into a society that is toxic.  This is obviously easier said than done, especially in toxic cultures that are extremely foused on the individual and that are materialistic. However, doing this is essential because it lays the foundation for the rest of our Soul development. So authenticity - and ziji - means to know who you really are — to know where you stand, what you value, what you desire, what you tolerate and what you don't — and to be able and willing to act accordingly, most of the time, despite the social risks. This takes a minute. The second half of the task in this stage: attaining social acceptability. This is where we can get screwed in the head about all this because to be a healthy adolescent, we need to belong to a healthy community. But when we are part of a toxic community that doesn't honor the process of the human soul, if we are going to “fit in” then we are at high risk of ending up compromising a lot of our Soul qualities. So if - and when - we connect with an authentic personality that is “acceptable” enough, then our focus shifts from our peer group to the bigger mysteries of exploring our psyche and our place in nature and the world. This shift is the passage of Confirmation.  This is when a rite of passage can be really powerful - it publicly confirms the fact that you've succeeded at creating a social presence that works … well enough for your human community.  And it then carries you into late adolescence (the Cocoon), which is the stage when we begin to asking the big, existential and spiritual questions of life:  What do I think differentiates survival and living? A social scene and true community? Academic achievement and deep learning? A “job” and Soul Purpose? Then - after many years of, as Rilke says, “living these questions,” after many expeditions of sorts, exploring our psyche and how we relate to nature, we discover our truth. As David Whyte says, “the truth at the center of the image you were born with.” In many traditional cultures and spiritual paths, a glimpse like this is called a soul purpose or calling, a vision, a soul purpose or calling, or the intuition of our destiny — which usually doesn't show up in more traditional cultural ways, like a job or social role like parenthood, but in a more mysterious way, unique to us. Then, when you commit to manifesting this vision in a kind of delivery system to the world for the benefit of all beings - and I also believe the planet - then and only then do you pass into Soul Initiation (with or without a rite or passage) and into true adulthood. So let's take a moment to reflect on where we are at with this ourselves - and not to shame ourselves, but to be curious so we can open up to what's possible. The world today needs authentically mature mentors to help others in this process. And tht doesn't mean you need to go get another damn training, so stop googling that right now. What is means is to engage in your own process and go through this yourself so you can say yes, it's scary, and often challening, and I've been there. You'll be OK. This is a big part of how I believe we can heal our society and the planet.  In this Episode you will learn:// The 3 phases in a rite of passage // The limitations of rites of passage// The difference between externally- and internally-based rites of passage// How to overcome society's obstacles to Soul growth// The 2 phases before Soul initiation// How to step into true emotional and psychological adulthood// Why we need you to be a mentor who has done the work// Three ways to begin this journey and arrive at Soul Initiation Resources:// Episode 105: Soul vs Spirit // Episode 71: How to Find Your Purpose // If you want to finally get clear about your unique Soul purpose and how to create a life that supports it during this one precious life we have, apply for the Adventure Mastermind.
