What do you get when you mix a functional nutritionist, a handful of beef liver, and a broken supplement industry? You get Nigel O'Quinn, Owner and President of Higher Health Foods, a real food company turning organ meats into nutrient-dense capsules without the BS. Together with host Tyler Chisholm, Nigel uncovers the unexpected path from crafting beef liver capsules for his wife—who didn't like the taste of organ meats—to building a food-first supplement brand sourced directly from regenerative Canadian farms. Nigel breaks down why Health Canada nearly shut him down, why Montana welcomed him with open arms, and why this isn't just about more than simple nutrition, it's about reclaiming trust in food, farming, and health. From sourcing marrow bones and liver to hand-filling capsules in his garage, this is a story of grit, bioindividual healing, and a mission to change the food system from the inside out.

California became the first state in the U.S. to ban ultraprocessed foods from public school lunches under the "Real Food, Healthy Kids Act," but the full phase-out won't take effect until 2035 Ultraprocessed foods — packed with vegetable oils, additives, and refined sugars — are engineered to trigger cravings and disrupt metabolism, contributing to childhood obesity, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease A study in JAMA Network Open found that preschoolers who ate the most ultraprocessed foods had higher body fat, larger waistlines, elevated blood sugar, and lower levels of protective HDL cholesterol The delayed timeline leaves millions of children unprotected for nearly a decade, underscoring the urgent need for parents to remove ultraprocessed foods and vegetable oils from their homes now You can protect your child's long-term health by replacing processed snacks with real foods, eliminating vegetable oils, cooking at home, reducing exposure to junk food ads, and teaching kids how to spot marketing tricks

93. Creating Holiday Traditions Around Real Food

The Farm Family Table⏐Homesteading, Homemaking, Christian Mom

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2025 25:01

When you think back on the holidays growing up, I'm willing to bet, the thing you remember most is not the decorations, not the presents, but the thing you remember most is the food. The smell of scalloped potatoes and ham in the oven, have half a dozen choices for pie, the treat tray of homemade goodies that would come out in the afternoon. Those are the memories that stick. But somewhere along the way, chances are after Grandma wasn't making the meal anymore, our modern holiday season became so busy, so commercialized, that we traded those things for convenience. We grab the pre-made cookie dough, the store-bought pies, the boxed side dishes or the gravy packet, and while there's nothing inherently wrong with that, I think many of us feel something is missing. Maybe you find yourself wishing for more or for holidays meals to be like they used to be. Today, I want to talk about how to bring real food back into our kitchens, and give your practical steps on how you create those special traditions for your family. You don't have to be a gourmet cook or have a picture-perfect kitchen. With a little bit of prioritizing and planning, you can make delicious food from scratch that your kids will remember and talk about for a lifetime,  even when you are in the middle of a busy holiday season. I hope this episode inspires you to make positive changes around holiday food this season, to start incorporating more real ingredients so you can feed your family well. But also know that this is not an all or nothing. This is not a legalistic thing that you shall only eat healthy non-processed foods. For Episode #188 of the PricePlow Podcast, we welcome Edwin Gonzalez, Functional Health Sales Manager at Health Tech Bio Actives (HTBA), alongside Michael Alfaro from Master Foods Lab. This episode marks a milestone collaboration: putting cutting-edge vitamin B12 science into functional foods that consumers can actually feel working. Edwin introduces MecobalActive, HTBA's ultra-pure, optimized methylcobalamin ingredient that's redefining what B12 supplementation can do. Traditionally, the industry positioned B12 as a deficiency vitamin for tired, anemic, or sluggish individuals. HTBA is changing that narrative completely. New clinical research demonstrates that just three days of MecobalActive supplementation significantly improved both physical power output and cognitive reaction time in healthy, well-trained athletes without B12 deficiency. This isn't about correcting what's broken, it's about optimizing what already works. The conversation explores HTBA's nearly 50-year European heritage, their unique position as the only EU manufacturer of all active B12 forms, and the proprietary green chemistry process that yields MecobalActive's exceptional purity and stability. Michael walks through the technical challenges of incorporating functional ingredients into Skinny Bite cakes (showcased at SupplySide Global 2025), revealing the complex interplay between formulation science, manufacturing constraints, and innovative problem-solving. From raspberry-colored B12 filling to protected cake layers to the partnership model driving functional food innovation, this episode delivers both scientific depth and practical application insights. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/vitamin-b12-htba-mecobalactive-188 Video: Redefining B12 with HTBA's Edwin Gonzalez and Master Foods Lab's Michael Alfaro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGqZm9Q5bkw Detailed Show Notes: MecobalActive B12 Takeover (0:00) – Welcome Back: A Dive Into Functional Foods (2:00) – Redefining B12: From Deficiency to Performance Enhancement (4:45) – Creating Functional Foods: The Clear Can Problem (7:15) – The Formulation Challenge: Making Actives Work in Real Food (11:00) – HTBA's European Heritage and Manufacturing Excellence (14:30) – Green Chemistry: Manufacturing B12 Without Toxic Reagents (16:45) – Light Sensitivity and Creative Product Applications (19:00) – Redefining B12 Like Creatine Was Redefined (22:00) – The Clinical Study: Triple-Blind Crossover in Healthy Athletes (26:45) – The Results: 4% Power, 6% Fatigue Resistance, 5% Cognition (31:00) – Structure/Function Claims and Market Applications (35:45) – Color-Driven Innovation and Future Applications (37:00) – The Chocolate Coating: Formulation Within Constraints (39:00) – Manufacturing Mastery: Solving the Protein Cake Challenge (41:00) – The Partnership Model: When Ingredient Suppliers Become Collaborators (42:00) – The Pressure Cooker: Building Brands in Real Time (44:00) – Closing and Where to Find Edwin, HTBA, and Michael Where to Find HTBA, MecobalActive, and Master Foods Lab HTBA and MecobalActive: MecobalActive: Healt... On today's episode of The Ultimate Assist, John Stockton and Ken Ruettgers welcome Sally Fallon Morell, author of Nourishing Traditions and president of the Weston A. Price Foundation — a woman who's been challenging mainstream nutrition dogma for over two decades. From defending raw milk and butter to exposing the dangers of industrial seed oils, glyphosate, soy, and processed foods, Sally calls out the powerful food and pharmaceutical interests that have shaped what she calls a “profitable but poisonous” diet. She argues that modern nutrition has been hijacked by money, convenience, and ideology — leaving generations sicker, weaker, and less fertile. In this provocative conversation, Sally dismantles the myths behind “healthy oils,” the food pyramid, and pasteurization, and explains why whole animal fats, cod liver oil, and traditional diets hold the key to reversing modern disease. She even connects food choices to rising infertility, behavioral changes, and chronic illness — warning that the survival of future generations depends on rediscovering what our ancestors knew all along.
