"Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." This simple principle serves as the heartbeat for reclaiming a life dedicated to authentic human depth. In a world optimized for digital efficiency and "frictionless" convenience, the true currency of a meaningful life remains the unscalable power of independent thought, presence, and intentional effort. In this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, Ashleigh Spiliopoulou explores the growing cultural movement of "Friction Maxing" — the intentional reintroduction of effort, inconvenience, and presence into our daily routines. Ashleigh shares insights from her month-long experiment with deliberate inconvenience, including rawdogging a 24-hour flight to Australia and ditching her headphones on daily runs. Together, the conversation dives into the rise of mainstream AI infiltration, the psychological dangers of AI Psychosis and FOBO (Fear Of Becoming Obsolete), and why healthy friction is ultimately the secret weapon for nervous system regulation, creative clarity, and deep human connection. 10 Memorable Quotes: "In a world of frictionless design, what if we friction maxed a couple things to add a little bit of meaning back into life?" "The more efficient and outsourced we get through really well-designed technology, the more it feels like life is kind of evaporating from us." "Why would I think for myself when AI could think for me?" "Frictionless isn't bad in every scenario." "The process was so beautiful, and then the result was so satisfying." "AI has so much potential and brilliance for so many areas of our lives, but it shouldn't be designed to replace our brain." "It's not necessarily teaching people something new. It's reminding them, this is how you used to live." "First we need to unlearn." "It's rebellious. It's so fun." "Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." 10 Key Takeaways: The Origin of Friction Maxing: Exploring Catherine Jezer-Morton's January 2026 article in The Cut magazine that sparked a mainstream conversation on adding intentional effort to life. The Falsehood of Frictionless Relationships: Reflecting on Esther Perel's cultural work and how eliminating interpersonal friction directly fuels the loneliness epidemic. The Threat of Cognitive Decay: How outsourcing daily thought processes to technology results in a tangible feeling of your brain disintegrating. Understanding AI Psychosis: Confronting the psychological danger of over-trusting automated companions until you completely lose trust in your own mind. Dismantling FOBO: Analyzing the "Fear Of Becoming Obsolete" and how surrendering creativity and discernment to AI attacks our baseline human self-worth. The No-Headphone Run: Why leaving audio stimulation at home forced a deeper focus on surroundings, leading to a fresher, more imaginative brain. The Gesture of Friendship: How exchanging a frictionless voice note for a handwritten letter to Boston reestablished a visceral, emotional sense of connection. Rawdogging a Flight: The profound creative clarity that emerged from enduring a 24-hour flight to Australia completely detached from movies, podcasts, or Wi-Fi. Unlearning for a 180 World: Recognizing that surviving the modern technological landscape requires us to actively unlearn automatic habits to relearn how to think. Architected Attention: Understanding that tech companies deliberately engineer frictionless designs solely to fork over your attention, money, and will. About our Guest: Ashleigh Spiliopoulou is a freelance journalist and health writer specializing in women's health, travel, and culture. A former heptathlete, her words have appeared in prominent publications including Condé Nast Traveller, Marie Claire, Women's Health, Stylist, Dazed, and Glamour. She is also the Co-Founder of Sunnie Runners, an inclusive London-based run club, and SOLA, a supper club designed for women looking to build personal and professional connections. Built on a foundation of storytelling, her work advocates for the vital necessity of using creative friction to protect human meaning and connection.

Millie Gooch is the founder of Sober Girl Society, author of The Sober Girl Society Handbook, and one of the loudest voices in the UK sober community for women in their twenties. But four years ago she was a blackout drinker. She didn't drink at all until 18, then went to uni, took three bar jobs, got paid in alcohol, and came out the other side a four-or-five-night-a-week binge drinker. PR and journalism after that. Free Bar Fridays. Ending up in Dover at 4am because she'd fallen asleep on the train. Three weeks in Thailand spent almost entirely drunk or hungover. A six-year relationship breakup at 24 that sent her head-first into another year of going out and getting hammered. She read a Stylist magazine interview with Catherine Gray on the tube one hungover morning. Took a photo of the article. Did nothing about it. Then in February 2018, after a night she couldn't remember at all, she downloaded the audiobook and listened to it for eight straight hours on the worst hangover of her life. That was her last drink. In this episode she walks through how Sober Girl Society started by accident, the trap of becoming "the sober person" instead of just a person, and what changes between year one and year four.If you enjoy One For The Road, then click follow to be notified of the release of our next episode. You can also access further content and shows on my Patreon account by clicking the link below.https://www.patreon.com/user?u=62824759&fan_landing=trueIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice, and links for Millie.Instagram.com/sobergirlsocietyInstagram.com/milliegoochhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Sober-Girl-Society-Handbook-empowering/dp/1787634124/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1636881084&sr=8-1https://www.wearewithyou.org.uk/https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/https://alcoholchange.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasiohttps://www.grownuphustle.com/Instagram - @daniellattanasio Hosted on Acast. Recently, a post from Dallas the Stylist stopped me in my tracks. It was raw. Honest. And for a lot of us… familiar. In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Dallas opens up about growing up with shame, feeling like something was wrong with him, and trying to earn acceptance through perfection. What started as survival eventually turned into a deeper journey of healing and learning to love himself. We're also joined by Josh Noblitt—an ordained minister, licensed marriage and family therapist, and certified sex therapist—who helps unpack how shame begins in childhood, how it shows up in adulthood, and what it actually takes to heal from it.This isn't just Dallas's story. It's a conversation about the many ways people grow up feeling “not enough”… and what it looks like to finally break that pattern. We talk about: childhood shame and emotional wounds conditional love and identity perfectionism as protection faith, religion, and healing separating God from harmful messaging what it means to truly accept yourself If you've ever felt like you had to perform to be loved… this one is for you.
In this episode, Ash Fortis, owner of XO Hair Lab and Director of Education at Sharkfin Shears, shares how health challenges, financial pressure, sweat equity, and major business setbacks shaped the leader she became. From navigating a team walkout during COVID to rebuilding stronger, Ash breaks down the hard side of heart-led leadership: protecting the culture, making difficult decisions, and creating a salon team that can actually last.

Your outfit speaks before you do...In this episode, I sit down with my personal stylist Sarah Kraus — live at Salesgirls HQ with a live audience in the room — to talk about something most sales coaches underestimate or completely ignore: what you look like when you walk in.Sarah breaks down the Visual Stack — the exact order your brain processes what it sees — and why by the time someone actually hears your words, they've already decided how much they trust you.We also get into:— The difference between your Trapped Self, your Authentic Self, and your Heroic Self (and which one most women are accidentally dressing as)— Why fit and silhouette say something specific about whether you respect your own body and the room— The "conversation zone" — where to keep styling details so people stay locked on your message— How to simplify your wardrobe so getting dressed stops costing you energy— Don't miss Sarah rapid fire her favorite places to shop for me at the endThis isn't about vanity. It's about congruence. Showing up looking like who you actually are — and who you're becoming.

Send us Fan MailThere's a clear split happening in the salon industry. Some salons are building careers, places where stylists grow, stay long-term, and feel part of something bigger.Other salons are building jobs, places where people come and go, fill chairs, and never fully buy in.In this episode, we break down the difference between those two types of businesses and why it matters more than ever.We talk about leadership, structure, culture, and decision-making, and how small, daily choices determine whether your salon becomes a place where people build a future…or just collect a paycheck. We also share real observations from our own experience, what we've seen across the industry, and why many salon owners don't intentionally choose to build “job salons”; they drift into them.Your business should serve you, so that you can serve others. And what you build is shaped by the decisions you make every day.Key TakeawaysEvery salon is building either jobs or careers; there is no neutral. Job salons are transactional and often reactive. Career salons are structured, intentional, and growth-focused. Short-term urgency often leads to long-term instability. Being busy doesn't fix structural problems. The technician's mindset limits business growth. Leadership requires new skill sets beyond technical work. Turnover is often a symptom of deeper structural issues. Systems and clarity create stability for teams. Intentional leadership determines long-term success.Time Stamps00:00 — Opening + episode overview 01:00 — Jen's opening take: community and volunteering 04:00 — Todd's opening take: help-first mindset 07:00 — The split happening in the salon industry 09:00 — Job salons vs career salons defined 11:00 — Transactional environments vs team culture 13:00 — Short-term thinking vs long-term vision 15:00 — Stylist-dependent vs system-driven salons 17:00 — Why most salons default to “job mode” 19:00 — Urgency, bills, and survival decisions 21:00 — The technician's curse explained 23:00 — The hamster wheel of reactive business 25:00 — Why “busy” doesn't solve problems 27:00 — Career salons: structure, systems, development 29:00 — Why turnover eventually breaks businesses 31:00 — It works… until it doesn't 33:00 — Leadership growth and accountability 35:00 — Tier A thinking and intentional leadership 37:00 — Investing in people and education 39:00 — Trust, clarity, and communication 41:00 — Ignorance vs awareness in business 43:00 — Final thoughts: build with intentionLinks and Stuff:Our Newsletter Mentoring InquiriesFind more of our things:InstagramHello Hair Pro Website

My guest today is Poorna Bell - award-winning journalist, author and competitive powerlifter. Poorna has written for The Times, Grazia, Red and Stylist among many others, and her latest book, She Wanted More, examines the quiet revolution taking place among women over 40 who are questioning the rules they've been handed and rewriting what the next chapter of their lives looks like. She talks with me about what those rules actually are, who set them, and why so many women in their 40s are reaching a point where they simply refuse to keep playing by them. Poorna is honest about her own journey - losing her husband in her 30s, navigating a life that doesn't look like her mother's and finding an unexpected sense of peace in that - and she has a lot to say about the mental load, the patterns that get set early in relationships and why in 2026 we're still having the same conversation about who does the dishes. We also chat about:Why 90% of the 1,000 women Poorna surveyed said friendship - not family or romance - is what matters most as they get older, and what that tells us about what we've been soldThe concept of "weeding" your life - and the gentlest way to let go of friendships that no longer serve you without blowing everything upWhy the patterns set early in a relationship are so hard to shift later and what that means for the mental load conversationWhat it means to build a sense of purpose when mainstream society offers you precious little validation for living differentlyHow strength training replaced diet culture noise, and why Poorna lifts heavy weights not for how she looks, but for the bones she wants to have at 80Find Poorna on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/poornabell/Find Poorna on Substack: https://poornabell.substack.comShe Wanted More is available wherever you buy books. If you enjoyed this episode then please leave a rating or review - and you can follow the podcast to ensure you don't miss future episodes.
