While spending a fun holiday weekend in New York City, it seems only fitting to publish a playlist of music from New York. I've hit 3 generations, Palladium Era, 70s Salsa Dura, and modern salsa and bachata. It's impossible to cover the depth and breadth of New York's contribution to latin music or even to provide a representative sampling, though here's at least a little sampling of some greats. There comes at time on some salsa nights when the lights get a little lower, when the room is full of only friends, and something in the air changes, and the music needs to change to go with it. Here's a podcast that marks that point in the night, when the salsa gets a bit jazzier, the bachatas get a heavier rotation, kizomba comes out, and we transition to the dark set, or what the Salsa Con Todo folks call Oaxia. Podcast #8 - Practica Speed Salsa I love DJing at practices, the enthusiasm that the dancers bring to learning and having fun is really infectious. For practicas, I play slower music, around 180bpm (or 90bpm if you count pulses). Here's a little subset from a recent gig. Si Entendieras and La Sombra are around 185bpm, and the Jerry Rivera song is a big faster (varying between 191-196bpm throughout the song), yet the beat is clear and timing is laid back, so it's still very good for a dance practica. Having this little speed variation tends to keep the practica fun, too. Please let me know what you think of this set, because I'm currently thinking of doing several more practica speed sets. For a lot of folks, it's much easier to find great faster songs than great songs at this slower pace, so I suspect that there's some demand here. Drop me comments on Podomatic or Facebook. Enjoy! Gilberto 'Pulpo' Colon Jr – Cross Body Groove New Swing Sextet – Bobo Tu Te Quedaras Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante – Ven Baila Conmigo Erick – Quiero Olvidarte y No Puedo Al DeLory – Zum Zum Babae Billy Carrión – Esta Fiesta Jerry Rivera – Amores como el nuestro Roberto Roena – Mi Desengaño La Sucursal S.A. – La Sombra Africando – Tiembela Grupo Niche – Sin Sentimientos Alex Matos – Si Entendieras El Gran Combo – Gota de Lluvia DJ Essey's Salsa Sickness Please leave comments, donations appreciated http://facebook.com/djedessey http://djessey.podomatic.com
Witches, vampires, ghosts, demons! Here's a fun set with a lot of great suggestions from awesome folks on Salsaforums.com who've been posting and researching various tracks for Halloween. It seemed like a great opportunity to put these together in a set for folks who might be throwing a Halloween party tonight. Enjoy these salsa and cha cha tracks that feature creepy sounds and ambience, supernatural beings, scary themes, or reverence for the dead. Use this to get in the mood this week or throw it on during a dance party. Fruko Y Sus Tesos – El Brujo Y La Bruja Orquesta Sociedad 76 y Orquesta Zodiac – La Caldera del Diablo Rey Reyes – Vampira!
