We had the pleasure of interviewing Nelson Freitas over Zoom video! After teasing us with two sensational singles, the Cape Verdean icon Nelson Freitas has released his long-awaited seventh album Black Butterfly via AWAL.A revelatory new record featuring a star-studded line-up of producers and songwriters, Black Butterfly is a masterful fusion of the signature sounds Nelson has built a legacy on during his multi-decade long career as a sonic boundary pusher, while also pushing forward with an experimental new sound for the star. While the Dutch artist of Cape Verdean heritage is no stranger to the scene, Nelson's new music reintroduces him with an evolution of his previous output. As a legend in the scene, Nelson has amassed a global fanbase over the years for his unique sound fusing Kizomba and Zouk with R&B and hip-hop – all of which are elements of the ‘mainstream' Afrobeats sound audiences of today have become familiar with, which is something Nelson heavily leans into on Black Butterfly. As the follow-up to Nelson's 2021 album Dpos D' Quarentena – home to his Mr Eazi assisted hit “Tellin' Me Something” – Nelson has assembled an impressive team of some of the most prominent producers in the Afrobeats scene for Black Butterfly. With a clear vision in mind for his record to create a ‘new sound', Nelson worked with in-demand hitmakers like Blaisebeatz (BNXN, Davido, Victony, CKay) and Nigerian super-producer Ozedikus (Rema, Oxlade) to deliver a body of work that sonically shows him in his true form.A record several years in the making, Black Butterfly also hears Nelson team up with the Grammy-nominated Afrobeats pioneer Kel-P on standout track “Satisfy You,” as well as the likes of Daecolm Holland (Adekunle Gold) who appears on “Don't Let Me Go” and co-wrote the title track with Nelson alongside Arrow Benjamin (Beyoncé), J.Sol and Mohombi.Elsewhere, the dark and mysterious “Nightcrawler” takes place as another major highlight from Black Butterfly, with Nelson smoothly gliding over the Masterkraft helmed beat and treating us to his signature vocal tones.Black Butterfly is preceded by the single “Hero” (watch), racking up over 3M views with its stunning music video which stars the Angolan-Portuguese international supermodel Sharam Diniz and emphasizes those moments in life when we must let go of even those we hold the closest. “Hero” has seen major airplay via DJ Edu on BBC Radio 1Xtra and was also selected by UK tastemaker VIPER Magazine as one of their ‘Essential' picks. As the title track and second single of Black Butterfly, “Black Butterfly” was originally conceived by Nelson whilst at a writing camp hosted by the legendary producer Teddy Riley (Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson) in Cabo Verde. Relaying a story of a sweet love affair, the swaying Afro rhythms of “Black Butterfly” are elevated by lush strings arranged by Portuguese musician Tiago Machado and has seen radio airplay across the UK including BBC 1Xtra and Wizard Radio, as well as playlisted by Noctis Magazine for their ‘Best of the Week' selects.Meanwhile, the luxurious “Black Butterfly” music video was directed by André Caniços and pictures a suavely styled Nelson against a backdrop of dancers and futuristic architecture amongst epic Cape Verdean greenery – a stunning juxtaposition between the modern and the classic, surely serving as the perfect representation of Nelson's forward-thinking yet timeless sounds.Speaking about his album, Nelson Freitas said the following: “I've been waiting for this album for ten years and it's a project where I truly found myself. It's something I've been working on for a long time and I believe the time has finally come. I looked for the best Afrobeats producers and composers in the world, and only with them did I feel complete enough to take this leap.”During his award-winning and Platinum-selling career, Nelson's energetic and dynamic stage performances have taken him to all corners of the globe, such as: the United States (including the Dunkin Donuts Center in Boston and AfroNation in Miami), the United Kingdom, Holland, Switzerland, France, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola and Portugal, where Nelson has sold out prestigious venues like the Coliseu dos Recreios and Campo Pequeno.Exhibiting a legendary artist at creative highs, the Black Butterfly record will surely see Nelson reach new heights in his already illustrious career and penetrate a wider audience through his fresh new sounds and lyrical perspectives. We want to hear from you! Writer and musician Kalaf Epalanga moves between Angola, Portugal, and Brazil, sounding out colonial histories and contemporary migrant experiences through kizomba and kuduro music, in Whites Can Dance Too (2023). ‘It took being caught at a border without proper documents for me to realise I'd always been a prisoner of sorts.' Kalaf Epalanga's debut novel follows a young man migrating from Africa to Western Europe, when he is suddenly stopped on his journey and demanded his papers by the immigration police. Finding work in various jobs, he does soon find community - and freedom - in the dance clubs of the cities. Whites Can Dance Too is an invitation to ‘embrace the other' and it's also a form of auto-fiction. Kalaf migrated from Angola to Portugal, the former a colony, known as Portuguese West Africa until 1951, which remained a province and state of the Portuguese Empire until 1975. First publishing in Portuguese, Kalaf details the legacies of this colonisation in contemporary culture, taking from the Latin tradition of writing the stream of consciousness, and challenging Anglophone standards with oral storytelling. Kalaf also talks about his relationship with translation - and why the English language edition is his favourite. Drawing on his background in electronic dance music, Kalaf relocates techno on the African continent, combining elements of the traditional African zouk and contemporary kuduro genres to design kizomba, or dance parties. We talk about sound as a vibration - a migration - which can articulate emotions and memories beyond words, and why curating exhibitions or DJ sets is a form of storytelling too. Traveling across continents, he shares some of his literary inspirations, from Ondjaki to Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, and how he has connected with Afro-Brazilians since working in South America. We also discuss the relationship between diasporas in the Global South, and the importance of supporting cultural and literary industries. Whites Can Dance Too by Kalaf Epalanga, translated by Daniel Hahn, is published by Faber, and available in all good bookshops and online. You can find Kalaf's book playlist here, and the Kizomba Design Museum playlists here. Why should you spend money to go to a Dance Congress/Festival #Kizomba #Salsa #Zouk #Bachata

Why should you spend $ to attend a Dance Congress? Yes, Yes, I know, I can already here some people say. “ But Two Left Feet” I can spend $10/$20 to go to my local dance social on any day of the week, and dance my heart out”. Or “… But Two Left Feet, I can spend $10-$20 and take a dance class locally in my city. Or I can Spend $50 for a private lesson with my local instructor”. All of these are valid reasons, please, just hear me out. Have you ever been to a legit Dance Congress or Festival ??? Have you felt the energy in the air, as you arrive on that Thursday/Friday Night and the anticipation of this weekend is absolutely overwhelming you. Do you remember the last day of school before summer break? Do you remember that feeling of riding the bus home, in anticipation of the summer time? Whether you stayed indoors all summer, or played outside with your friends. Summer Break was the greatest time of the year. And as we get older and become adults, and take on more responsibilities, that sensation of being a Child/Teenager and not having a care in the world is not often replicated / or experienced In my opinion, Dance Congresses are a way of reliving that childhood feeling of anticipation. Side Note – Anticipation is why I believe that Friday Nights are the best day of the week. Just think about. It's Friday and its 5pm, You are driving home from work, and you have a free weekend. No major plans, just you and your free time. Your anticipation for the weekend is what gives you that major adrenaline and serotonin rush. Anything is possible, You can do anything over the next few days. This same feeling is what occurs when you first arrive at a Dance Festival. You are seeing new people, fresh faces, beautiful people, ugly people, weird people. But everyone there, is there for the same reason, We all Love Social Dancing. Humans are social beings with a powerful psychological need to belong. membership and identification with—some group is critically important for our happiness. We have a need for friends, and a romantic relationship. We join social clubs, fraternities, and sororities; participate in community events. People often wear shirts and Hats proclaiming their associations, which makes us feel accepted, valuable, and important. The Need to belong is usually found within families, friendships, membership in associations, and within our community. That is why when you first arrive to the Dance Congress, it's like coming home. You are around your people, You can let your hair down and enjoy it because everyone there is just like you. We all have hopes/dreams/aspirations -  we all want to become the best dancers we can be. We all are eager to share our joy and enthusiasm with other like-minded people.   There is something about taking a road trip to a foreign city, booking a hotel, and then taking some amazing dance workshops during the day and attending dance socials in the evenings. It is legit one of my favorite things to do, and I implore you, if you have never gone, please please go!     #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers     2LF Links    _______________________________________________   Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor:  https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Social dancing is the single most significant cross cultural activity we have on Earth. All cultures ha e a history of music and dance. Many of these cultures have had governments outlaw social dancing as a form of control. In our modern age, however, social dancing can be a gateway to self development, a tonic for healing anxiety, and a door to a new social life. This is what I learned from attending a Kizomba dance class last night and observing the new generation of leaders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drjennie/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drjennie/support

On this episode of GET TO KNOW YOU, we discuss  another thought-provoking topic; ‘How does channelled movement create different flow states?'. This week, I'll be sitting down with Genevieve Kayra (IG genevieve.kayra). She is a Kizomba artist and modern mystic originally from Australia, and currently living in Spain. Dance and spirituality have been the main pathways of her lifetime so far. Kayra codes is her unique method of teaching Kizomba, embodiment, women's work and mysticism. The main theme of Kayra codes is "as above, so below.' recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings and of all of life. In recognizing our own inner union and oneness, we then begin to recognize this all around us. The more we operate through oneness, the more we create peace and harmony in our lives.  Tune in as we discuss; What is flow state? What are the triggers to enter flow state? What is channelled movement? What does it mean by different flow states? And more. Stay tuned to the end of the episode where Clifford shares an exciting finding and to find out how you can join the conversation on the Get To Know You Café.   If you would like to support me to continue making these podcasts you can go to https://www.buymeacoffee.com/gettoknowyouwtf. Hola Mi gente! I had the amazing pleasure to have a little chisme with the one and only Vinny Rivera, who is a singer and songwriter in the urban music world. He mostly sings Bachata and Kizomba songs, which are danced all over the world. In this episode, he shares his artistic journey and how pursuing his passion for music, not only fulfills him but unites communities all over the world. WHO IS VINNY? Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Puerto Rican parents mentored by his Dominican stepfather, Victor Rivera also known as “Vinny Rivera” is one of the hardest working singer/songwriters. Being raised in the city's melting pot, he was exposed to a variety of musical genres such as Reggae, Jazz, Soca, R&B, Kizomba and Pop, as well as the sounds of his native and neighboring island of Dominican Republic absorbing the sounds of Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. As a DJ at 16, he began listening intensively and studied all types of music and later connected with friends and began recording and releasing songs, eventually opening shows with a self titled group called “Vinny Dinky & Crazy Joe” aka “Miwe Productions” for world renowned acts, such as Nicky Jam, Wisin & Yandel, Zion & Lennox, Ivy Queen, to name a few. Vinny later joined the United States Air Force and his experience in Afghanistan had taught him many lessons about life and the value of time. After serving four years active duty, he focused on his music career working closely and learning from his friends and mentors such as DereVinci, Grammy winning Producer Richy Peña, Jowell y Randy, Ivy Queen, De La Ghetto, and long time friend Jorgie Milliano. He eventually found his place as a pioneer of Latin Kizomba but focused his energy on a new sound that is “Bachata Sensual”, catering to a passionate audience of dancers and music listeners alike. His growing base of fans from all parts of the world have allowed him to tour in the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Russia, and the list of places continues to grow. Vinny Rivera's singing and writing abilities have captured the respect and attention of audiences around the world and his passion for music only grows as he continues to give his best to his fans. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chismethatmatterspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chismethatmatterspodcast/support

As broadcast December 22, 2021 with plenty of Luso for you podcastophones.  Tonight we took our final trip of the year with Lizz Kalo to another tropical destination as we freeze here in Korea.  Sao Tome and Principe was originally a penal colony for the Portuguese Empire, and the spirit of defiance lives on in the modern era with a vintage and rebellious sound all their own.  We celebrated some of the music from Angola and Cape Verde as well during the two hours for a real celebration of Lusophone Africa and how music unites very disparate people, even within these countries.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Paulo Flores – Herois da FotoAbel Lima – Steba Cu AnabelaCabo Verde Show – Nova ColadeiraQuinto do Canto – Mino di MamaMendes & Mendes – Mitamiyo Part II (30:33)Teta Lando – Muato Wa N' GinjilaTanga – Eme n'gongo iamiTony Gaetano – Pangui Yami UafuaLuiz Visconde – Chofer de PracaBana – Pontin PontinBembeya Jazz National – Petit Sekou Part III (60:52)Sangazuza – IZAURASangazuza – Sun MaleJoão Seria – PedlêloOs Untues – Chi bo sa migu di vedeAfrica Negra – CimodaAfrica Negra – Cumamo Bivalemo Part IV (99:28)Felipe Santo – BudoCamilo Domingos – Porque e Que e AssimCalema - Te AmoEDSONG – Corpo Com CorpoKingston Rudieska - Reggae Bam BamKingston Rudieska – White Winter
