Not A Diving Podcast with Scuba

House music all night long is a fine adage for the feckless youth of no responsibility, but try delivering the aforementioned while breastfeeding a newborn and facing the prospect of doing the same thing tomorrow in a different country. Cassy has unquestionably done the 'DJ thing'. Formerly resident of https://circolocoibiza.com/ (Circoloco) and graduate of the inaugural https://berghain.de (Panorama Bar) class, she's played all the shows anyone serious about House music ever wanted to. We talk about all of that stuff, and also dig into some of the less glam aspects of DJing, like the limitations of being part of a highly-insular community like the dance scene, the increasing pressures to conform to the norms of that community, and the deficit of authentic voices in the scene. We also discuss making music, the influences of Prince and most notably James Brown, and address the crucial question of whether DJing is a form of art. Cassy is a true original, and you will enjoy this conversation! On https://hotflush.bandcamp.com (Hotflush) this week I drop a collaboration with Bakongo, aka former podcast guest Roska. Composer Brittany J. Green is already making waves in the world of new classical music. However, given the variety of inspirations that pervades her work – from computer-coding languages to Black feminist theory – and her growing passion for electronica and for DJing her own sets, she is very much beating an artistic path that disregards the boundaries of genre. Her work has been performed at concerts and festivals throughout the United States, including the Boulanger Initiative's WoCo Fest and New York City Electronic Music Festival, and last year she recorded a new piece with the Atlanta Symphony that was released online in January 2022 as part of the Symphony's “Concerts for Young People” series.A recent recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters' Charles Ives Scholarship and the ASCAP Foundation's Morton Gould Award, Brittany is currently in residence at Duke University in Durham, NC, where she is pursuing a Ph.D. in music composition as a Deans Graduate Fellow. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Brittany discusses the two qualities that guide the evolution of her compositional practice: her ability to learn through deep listening and her commitment to cross-disciplinary collaborations. https://www.brittanyjgreen.com/
