Anche se il cristianesimo rimane fondamentale motivo ispiratore di tutte le espressioni artistiche, progressivamente si affacciano nuove esperienze che tendono a distaccarsi dalla pratica religiosa ed hanno come oggetto l'uomo con i suoi sentimenti o sono ispirate dall'ambiente naturale. La pratica musicale quindi non è più soltanto legata alla preghiera ma inizia ad acquisire un valore espressivo autonomo, una maggiore dignità artistica.
