The High School Athlete Podcast is a mix of conversations of coaches of the past and present, past and current players and the 12th man in the stands. We strive to give different perspectives to high school athletics and hope to stay up to date with curre
Jayton Head Football Coach Josh Stanaland hops on the mic for episode 10 of The High School Athlete Podcast. Time flew by and we were not able to dive into some of the things that I had prepared but that simply means we will record episode 2 with Coach Stanaland in the future. Josh allowed us into his life as he grew up a Jayton Jaybird, graduated a Jaybird and came back where he has coached for the last 18 years. Yes, you read correctly, Coach Stanaland has been a Jayton Jaybird in every sense of the wording from beginning to present day. Even better, Stanaland is coaching beside long time friend and teammate Ryan Bleiker who serves as the head basketball coach and offensive coordinator for the Jaybirds. Philosophy is a great topic and one that I believe coaches should be asked. Coach allowed a genuine look into his personal thoughts and shifts in philosophy as he embarks on year 19. At the end of the day, Coach Stanaland is more interested in his athletes becoming great men, husbands and fathers. Coach speaks on the perks of living and growing up in a small town including the relationships that are formed and hold true off of the playing field and into this rollercoaster we call life. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Josh and I think you guys will think the same. Be sure to follow us on facebook, instagram, youtube and your favorite podcast audio platform. You have the option to listen to the podcast or you can visually watch the entire conversation via our YouTube channel. Coming soon The High School Athlete will have its own website where you can conveniently locate everything that you are looking for. Enjoy!
Strawn head coach Dewaine Lee! The podcast will be on all platforms tomorrow but enjoy the full video on YouTube. If you ever get a chance to sit down with coach Lee, I strongly recommend it. The man has been at Strawn for 18 years and a coach for 28. His values and principles are second to none with a strong emphasis on accountability. I love all high school athletics but when your child gets a chance to play for someone like coach Lee you know they have a great chance to build upon a strong foundation. Coach says he is who he is and I believe every bit of who he is is perfectly okay. Strawn is lucky to have a coach who invests himself in the community and continues his relationships with his student athletes beyond the playing field. I hope you enjoy this episode.
Rule Bobcats Athletic Director, Head boys Football and Basketball coach Kade Kittley joins the show. It is always good to catch up with a friend and old teammate. I had the pleasure of throwing Kade a few touchdowns back in our hay days. I hope you enjoy listening to the episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Be sure to catch the video version on our facebook and youtube channel.
Hope you all enjoy this one with former quarterback Quincy Carter. Quincy describes his youth and leads us all the way to present day. His triumphs along with his struggles make for a great story of redemption that I had Quincy is able to sustain for the rest of his life. Sometimes God gives but he can also take away as well but it is all for the greater good. Enjoy.
Kyna and Lauren give us insight on high school athletics for females and specifically their personal experiences within the moments that they each experienced. I am really proud of this episode as Kyna and Lauren do a great job of diving into the female athletic experience but I think they describe the small School atmosphere in a great way. If you attend a small school like Rule, give this a listen and let me know if you can relate. I would bet that there is a girl going through some of the obstacles that Kyna and Lauren speak on that might actually help get you through whatever moment that you are in. I really hope you enjoy this because I did.
We finally both find the time to sit down for a complete segment and episode of The High School Athlete Podcast. It is always good talking with Coach Bleiker, especially because he was my high school basketball coach. Coach Bleiker is a guy who will be named into the high school coaches hall of fame if that sort of thing exists. If that sort of award exists for 1A classification then the decision will be a no brainer. I am also projecting that Coach Bleiker will have at least a few more opportunities to win a state championship in basketball. In this episode we travel back to his first coaching job at Rule to his current position in Jayton. Definitely a players coach, the athletes enjoy playing for him and I think that is very important for success. I ask the common question of the conditions of Covid and so far the virus has not slowed down the program at all in Jayton (knocking on wood here). If you listened to the players episode with Tripp Scott and Pecos Smith then you will understand how much the players appreciate Coach Bleiker and I will also back the positive claims from way back in my high school playing days. Coach is just an overall great guy and family man but he is one heck of a basketball coach. Coach Bleiker has had the Jayton basketball program moving in the right direction for a few years now and he puts us onto one of his secrets of starting the kids at a young age and being a big part of the younger programs that are available to those not yet in junior high. The winning comes with hard work and it won't happen if you only play or practice during the season only. To be successful you need to be working on your craft year round in one aspect or another. Coach speaks on the training of his players and the positive results of being a multi sport athlete. Great episode. Enjoy!
This was was about the Jayton JayBirds. Who better to talk to than Tripp Scott and Pecos Smith. I enjoyed getting to learn about these guys and talk about the transition into success in multiple sports in the Jayton Athletic Department. Two guys here who just want to win and see themselves as team players. Listen, I don't expect any type of manners on the show.. I want you to be yourself but these two were always yes sir the entire time and I think that says a lot about the coaching staff and their families back at home. With a district championship in mind the Jaybirds are coming off of a Friday night loss but hope to rebound next week. Give these guys a listen and let's support those Jayton Jaybirds. -Jay

Oh man... are you in for a treat. This episode is nothing less than straight fire. I am honored and delighted to get to speak with a man who has been such a strong influence for so many people in this world. Jamey is a man that walks the walk and proves through his actions that he is a man of faith. I think many will back me up on that. This episode is one of those that you can feel the presence of something not of this planet moving as he explains his position and purpose with Fellowship Of Christian Athletes. Make sure you listen to the very end because if there is one man that you want talking and praying with our coaches and players, it's Jamey Calvery. Making big moves and getting people fired up for Christ is his primary purpose. Enjoy. To Donate to Jamey Calvery and his FCA journey visit www. my.fca.org/JameCalvery or call 325-627-5377 Thank you to our sponsors, Gordon Exxon and Jamey Calvery. This is not possible without you.
PLEASE READ....... Who better to put on the show first than my high school coach Mike Reed. I hope that each player that we come across with this show gets the opportunity to have a coach like Mike. What people don't understand is that small schools struggle in many different ways and sometimes that struggle is extremely really and deals with a high school students home life. Sometimes, athletics is an athletes only escape from an unfair reality. I personally witnessed Coach Reed show up for his students time and time again standing in the gap where some players own parents were not able to stand. There are many many late nights behind the scene ahctions that take place such as driving 60 miles to drop a kid off at their home, daily trips to the middle of nowhere to drop a kid off at home otherwise they would not be able to participate in athletics. Spending the extra money to make sure that a student is able to get cleats, or socks.. Even more... paying the extra money so that player and his family can feed themselves for the week. A coach is something so much more than we give them credit for. We all have our faults, every single one of us and some people love nothing more than to scrutinize others and their faults. But how many of you can say that you followed that student athlete all of the way through? Its not your job to feed that kid.. but you did. Its not your job to pay for the tutoring so that that kid can pass high school.. but you did. Its not your job to risk everything so that kid may have an opportunity in life... but you risked it. Its not your Job to love them... but you do. The deeper and more genuine we get into it, the more we figure out that this has nothing to do with athletics at all. This has to do with love and family along with leadership scrambled with opportunity to be something you were never given the time of day to be. Coach Reed is a great coach, he knows 6 man football and he is at fault for loving his kids.. sometimes that shows up as enabling but I would go to battle with nobody else, I would follow no other coach because I have seen the true meaning of what a coach really is. We pushed the boundaries several times.. and several times had to admit our wrong doing but we are all better because of it. Not very many people have seen the truth put together with the hurt and pain in order to gain success.. Success measured by the size of the heart.. the size of the man from fighting through adversity.. the size of the family and the kindness only sustainable from someone who faced a Goliath and God showed up.. You can tell me all about your coach and I will never doubt what you have to say and the truth behind it but I will also tell you about mine.. One thing I know is that we are going to fight for each other.. And his family continues to grow from the ability to coach more and more players. You can hear it in the voice of his current player and you will see it in the eyes and the story of his past players. Forever a great man, forever a great coach and forever the creator of the truth that family is the most important no matter what. "Never fear the winds of adversity, for a kite flies against the wind rather than with it".- unknown
Episode 1/2 featuring the Gordon Longhorns. I enjoyed having a pow wow with Brody Scrivner, Morgan Mahan and Hoss Rouse. All three are juniors and play multiple sports for Gordon. You can sense the motivation that these kids have playing for Head Coach Mike Reed and even brings back memories when all you had to worry about was making good grades, football on Friday nights and occasionally showing some attention to the girl down the hall a grade below you. What a great group of guys to lead off the High School Athlete Podcast. Want to say thank you to this weeks sponsors including: Gordon Hardware Store, Country Bumpkin Goodies and Rafter JM Flowers. I hope you enjoy these two Gordon featured episodes as much as I do.
