There are countless myths and reports throughout human history of places where spirits come down to earth. Where the intangible meets the material world. In the US, there are few places that better demonstrate this crossroads than New Orleans. People have tried to explain how the joy of living here triumphs over everyday things like dysfunction and potholes, with slogans like “The Big Easy,” and “The city that care forgot.” One of the locations you can witness this triumph of the spirit is the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street. No, not Rouse’s. Across the street. At Tipitina’s music club. Keith Spera from the Times Picayune has called Tipitina’s, “a sacred space.” Dr. John called it, “The church of the funky saints.” And Jazz Fest co-founder Quint Davis has referred to it as, “The Vatican of New Orleans music.” Tipitina’s was founded in 1977 by a bunch of young people who knew nothing about business, music promotion, running a restaurant, a bar, or a radio station – it was the original home of WWOZ. These folks just wanted a place that celebrated New Orleans musicians and gave them a stage to play on - and a guarantee they’d actually get the money that people paid to come see them. In 2018, history repeated itself when the members of the New Orleans band Galactic bought Tipitina’s. Musicians are not typically known for their firm grasp of the music business, but the doors are still open and the revenue streams have diversified, including a record business called Tipitina’s Record Club. Robert Mercurio is the bass player in Galactic, part owner of the legendary Tipitina’s music club, and Co-Founder of Tipitina’s Record Club. Besides music, there’s another strand of New Orleans where art meets commerce, and where, literally, the rubber meets the road. Motorcycle design and manufacture. It’s a lot less celebrated than our place in the history of music, but if you know a thing or two about motorbikes you’ll know my other lunch guest today, J.T. Nesbitt. J.T designed and was part of the team that produced motorcycles called The Wraith, the G2 Hellcat and The Magnolia Special, for Confederate Motorcycles, and later an electric bike, The Curtiss One. They’re all elegant works of art and powerful machines. Today, JT is designing and building a new line of bikes under the banner of his own company, Bienville Studios. Currently he’s building a bike called the Magnolia 4. We find out all about it in this edition of Out to Lunch but for now all you need to know is Jay Leno has one on order. The Tipitina’s logo with the half-peeled banana is a New Orleans icon. For locals and live music lovers everywhere it’s as recognizable as the Nike swoosh or the Mercedes hood ornament. Nike and Mercedes spend millions of dollars each year to keep their brands in front of people. Tipitina’s brand is spread mostly by people paying them – to buy a T-shirt or baseball cap. The lesson being, when you have a product people genuinely care about and cherish, it sells itself. The same philosophy can be applied to the motorbikes coming out of Bienville Studios. Robert Mercurio and J.T. Nesbitt are both at the helm of very different but equally unique and valuable New Orleans pieces of art and commerce. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. As our understanding of APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) grows, so does the need for greater awareness. National APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) Awareness Day is observed annually on the last Tuesday of April. In this episode of Kidney Transplant Conversations, we share an inspiring story of resilience, advocacy, and hope. Sharron Rouse opens up about her personal journey with kidney disease — a journey that began with a diagnosis of lupus nephritis, only to later discover she was actually battling FSGS (focal segmental glomerulosclerosis), a condition sometimes linked to the APOL1 gene variant that is found in around 35% of people of African ancestry. In a heartfelt conversation with host Rolf Taylor, Sharron discusses the shock of her diagnosis, the challenges of navigating unclear answers, and the life-changing gift of a kidney transplant from her sister. As the founder of Kindness for Kidneys International, Sharron is now a tireless advocate, raising awareness about the genetic factors influencing kidney health. She emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, the critical role of research into APOL1-related kidney disease, and the urgent need for greater awareness in communities of African descent. Tune in to hear how Sharron's story offers hope to kidney warriors everywhere, highlights the life-saving potential of genetic testing, and makes a powerful case for early intervention. This episode is both inspiring and a call to action for greater education, early screening, and community empowerment. I grew up in one of North America's great snow belts…and started my career in Buffalo NYSo, that background and my fascination with sediment transport primes curiosity in ice transport.I'm sure my ice friends would cringe at this, but I sometimes call ice transport as upside down sediment transport. But despite the symmetry of ice and sediment transport, they are separate, complicated, disciplines with little overlapping expertise.Which is why its remarkable, that this episode's guest is not only is not only world class in both disciplines, but unquestionably the go-to global expert in how they interact. It is fair to say that just about everything I know about how ice effects sediment transport and river morphology, I learned from Dr. Rob EttemaSo I wanted to have Rob on the podcast to talk about the interactions between ice and the other river processes we tend to talk about in this feed. But recognizing that maybe not everyone who listens to this podcast, is initiated into the wild world of fluvial ice dynamics, we start out with some basics of river ice-formation and transport. But then we not only dove into the differences between ice-affected and ice-free rivers, but also how ice affects rivers of different latitudes, depths, and even flow directions.Dr. Rob Ettema retired Colorado State University last year, where he has been a professor since 2015 and continues to work as a research scientist. Before that he taught (and served as Engineering Dean) at the Universities of Iowa and Wyoming. He has edited ASCE's cold regions journal, and won that society's Rouse and Einstein (2015) Awards, which is particularly apt as he has written biographical works on the scientists both of those awards are named after. He is well know for his work on ice and scour; the former we talked about at length and the latter we barely touched. But Dr. Ettema, is also one of those researchers, that has multiple self-contained, bodies of work, which have each influenced me enough, that I would have invited him on the podcast for either topic. So in the second half of the conversation, we explore Dr Ettema's interest in the history of the hydraulic and sediment disciplines, and a genre of literature in which he is second to none: sediment science biography. We talk about lessons from the characters he has written about, including names like Rouse, Einstein, and Radkivi. This will wrap up our Colorado State trilogy.Kind of…we are also releasing some remarkable bonus content with this episode.Jennifer Bountry (Bureau of Reclamation) invited Dr. Ettema and Dr Julien down to the Bureau's technical service center to teach a short course together. She provided the zoom footage. So I edited a little bit and we are releasing the whole short course on the HEC sediment Youtube channel. If you found the last two episodes interesting, we have about 8 hours, of formal technical content for you to dig into. We'll link to the playlist in the episode notes and post the This series was funded by the Regional Sediment Management (RSM) program.Mike Loretto edited the first three seasons and created the theme music.Tessa Hall is editing most of Season 4.Stanford Gibson (HEC Sediment Specialist) hosts.Video shorts and other bonus content are available at the podcast website:https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rastraining/latest/the-rsm-river-mechanics-podcast...but most of the supplementary videos are available on the HEC Sediment YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordgibsonIf you have guest recommendations or feedback you can reach out to me on LinkedIn or ResearchGate or fill out this recommendation and feedback form: https://forms.gle/wWJLVSEYe7S8Cd248

Kick off 2025 with the first episode of the year featuring yoga instructor, business development powerhouse, and all-around inspiration, Becca Rouse!

That same year, the Wheeling native was gifted a sewing machine for Christmas, and she quickly began stitching together a future centered on fashion, design and business. Now Rouse is on hand to oversee the opening of a new textile training and manufacturing center in Beckley. She had connected with the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority and WV Hive, the development authority's entrepreneurial arm, a few years ago while at a fashion show in Glade Springs. As the owner of Edgington Studio, a full-service cut-and-sew apparel manufacturing company in Wheeling, Rouse said officials with the development authority were interested in using her expertise to help shape the center, called PATTERN (Planning and Accelerating Textile Technology and Entrepreneurship Regional Network). Set to open in summer 2025, the space has been designed not only to fit the current, local needs of the textile industry but also to train its future workforce. I always enjoy sitting down with Shep Rouse and getting his viewpoint on winegrowing in Virginia and wine in general. He has been making wine for close to 45 years. First in California in the early '80s and then in Virginia first in 1986 at the old Montdomaine winery and then founding his own winery Rockbridge in 1992.Although Shep doesn't produce a Norton every vintage, mostly because he doesn't grow it in his vineyard the Norton wine, I have had from him in the past is a great expression of the grape and what it can be once in the bottle and aged properly. In fact, the 2002 Rockbridge Norton, his first vintage, that I had several years ago was one of the highlights for me since I moved to Virginia in 2019. Tasted in the fall of 2020 it had transformed into a wine that reminded me of some of the BV Private Reserve wines from the early '70s that I used to enjoy from California. It was a remarkable bottle of wine. The memory of which has stuck with me since and has inspired me to begin to collect Norton and lay it down in my cellar for the future. You will learn from this conversation with Shep. Take a listen or read the transcript attached below. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. Commercial Banking in Kenya: A History from Colonisation to Digital Age (Routledge, 2024) investigates the impact of commercial banks in Kenya right through from their origins, to their role during the colonial period, the process of adaptation following independence, and up to their responses to new challenges and economic policies in the twenty-first century. The British colonisation of East Africa required the development of diverse political, social and economic institutions to advance and exercise control over the territories and their populations. Multinational commercial banks were among the first institutions, with the National Bank of India, Standard Bank of South Africa and Barclays Bank DCO all setting up business in Kenya, whilst continuing to maintain close relationships with the UK and other colonial actors. This book assesses the impact of commercial banks during the last years of colonial domination and the tools they used to adapt in the first decades of independence. The book concludes by considering how the colonial banking system has influenced the development of modern financial institutions in Kenya in the twenty-first century. This book argues that commercial banks are fundamental to understanding African colonies, and the foundations over which the financial system of contemporary Africa was constructed. It will be of interest to researchers of banking, economic history, the colonial period, and African studies. Christian Velasco was born in Mexico City and studied History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he specialized in economic history. In 2013, he was awarded a master's degree at the London School of Economics, with a comparative study of banking in Ghana and Botswana. The University of Warwick awarded him a PhD in 2019, working under the supervision of David Anderson and Daniel Branch, with a dissertation titled The Kenyan Banking System: From Colonial Expansion to Independence Uncertainty, 1950–1970. He is currently full-time academic staff at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica (CIDE) in Mexico City. In this conversation, Nikita Taniparti interviews Dr. Carolyn Rouse, who gives us a preview of her forthcoming book. Based on almost a decade of fieldwork in Lake County, CA, her book looks at an economy of care as opposed to an economy of things, and how the relations that emerge through care work are linked to life expectancy and health outcomes. Dr. Rouse explains her interlocutor's search for freedom, and the narrative threads of hope that emerge to bind a community together. Today's guest is Dr. Carolyn Rouse. She is the Ritter Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. Her work is wide-ranging and has focused on issues of race, religion, inequality, political and economic development, and more. Her first book, Engaged Surrender: African-American Women and Islam (2004), is an ethnography of African American Sunni muslim women in Los Angeles, CA – the book shows how the teachings of Islam give these women a sense of power and control over interpretations of gender, family, authority, and obligation. Her next book, Uncertain Suffering: Racial Health Care Disparities and Sickle Cell Disease (2009) provides an examination of what it means that black Americans are sicker and die earlier than white Americans and the implications for health care in the United States. This book provides important framing to our discussion today, which is about Professor Rouse's forthcoming book on declining life expectancies of white Americans. Her book Televised Redemption: Black Religious Media and Racial Empowerment, co-authored with John Jackson Jr and Marla Frederick and published in 2016, argues that African American religious media has long played a key role in humanizing perceptions of African Americans by claiming that they are endowed by God with the same gifts of goodness and reason as whites, if not more, thereby legitimizing black Americans' rights to citizenship in the United States. As a filmmaker, Prof. Rouse has also produced and directed numerous documentaries, including Chicks in White Satin (1994), Purification to Prozac: Teaching Mental Illness in Bali (1998), Listening as a Radical Act: World Anthropologies and the Decentering of Western Thought (2015), and more. She is dedicated to expanding forms of visual anthropology, a theme that we'll touch upon a bit later in this episode. Her forthcoming book builds on her decades of research on racial disparities in health and medicine, development and policy efforts, and ongoing political and economic shifts in the US. The book project began when she visited Lake Country in Northeast California in 2016 to investigate research claims being made at the time that showed that life expectancies for white Americans was declining. Today she'll talk about that ongoing research and how it is linked to the emergence of hope, trust, and community. The three interviews heard in this episode date back to the summer of 1988, when Light Hearted host Jeremy D'Entremont traveled up the Maine coast to visit lighthouses. The first interview is with Maurice Babcock Jr., at his home in Lubec, Maine. His father, Maurice Babcock Sr., was the last civilian keeper at Boston Light. He was the prinicipal keeper there from 1926 to 1941 after about a decade as a keeper at other Massachusetts light stations. The last interview is with Malcolm Rouse, the final Coast Guard keeper at Owls Head Light Station in midcoast Maine. The light stations at Fort Point and Owls Head were in the process of being automated when these interviews were conducted. IN THIS EPISODE: Critics of the Santiago Flight 513 story insist it's nothing more than an urban myth or an attempt to sell newspapers. But is there evidence to contradict their conclusions? (The Time Warp of Santiago Flight 513) *** Help! Help! Oh, my God! Frank is murdering the whole family. Rouse the neighbors!” These cries from a terrified woman led to the story of several attempted murders – and a song that most have forgotten. (The 30th Street Murder) *** After a series of attacks on farm animals in Puerto Rico, numerous people reported sightings of the creature at fault. But the strange thing is that none of the reports seemed to match – as if each sighting was of a different unknown animal. (Chupacabra Shapeshifter) *** Behind his friendly demeanor lurked a deadly obsession with torture and murder. He soon earned the label, “The Butcher of Kansas City.” (Robert Berdella) *** Weirdo family member Chris Misulich tells the true story of him and his friends getting exactly what they asked for… and wishing they hadn't.
