The Llama Llama Series by Anna Dewdney is a fun and simple series for children. In this episode, I read the story. Then, I read it faster. After that, I sing the story and rap the story. Encouraging children to have fun and connect to reading as an experience is key. ❤️
Dr. Shipman’s Kindergarten Chronicles: The December Holidays is a great story that discusses December traditions. It also identifies Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Although written in a playful way, the story actually highlights actual occurrences, as the author Terrance Shipman is a veteran teacher. The images in the story highlight an African American male teacher.
‘Twas Nochebuena is a lovely story that has Spanish words mixed in. This bilingual tale of Latino Christmas traditions is a great way to experience the traditions of another culture. Use this story as a way to also initiate counting in Spanish.

“Hey Black Child” by Useni Eugene Perkins, is not only a beautiful poem for young black kids, but it also serves as a powerful mantra. Have the Child repeat after this poem in a big voice! Have them recite it in the mirror! Have them recite it while dancing. The end of the poem states: “And Tomorrow Your Nation Will Be What You Want it to Be.” A great activity would be to have the child draw or discuss what the world would look like if he or she were king or queen of the world. What would schools look like? What would kids learn? Would there be homelessness? How would we help people, so they wouldn’t be homeless? What types of food would people eat? Part 2: “What are some things that you must learn right now to be a great king or queen of the world?
“Froggy Gets Dressed” by Jonathan London is a classroom favorite amongst my kindergarteners. In fact, I always have to purchase extra copies because this book always finds itself a new home with several of my students. I love the repetition and the energy of the story.
I Would Do Anything For You, by: Ashia Ervin, is a light-hearted children’s book about a mother's love and her endeavors to make her children smile throughout the day. The book features bold and beautiful artwork highlighting the comedic aspect of sibling rivalry and the story embraces the unconditional love between a mother and her children. It’s Not What You’ve Got written by Wayne Dyer is an excellent story about abundance, gratitude, and wealth. It is important to help to create a mindset of abundance rather than lack early on in one’s childhood. This story is a great start!
