After 27 years, Melvyn Bragg has decided to step down from the In Our Time presenter's chair. With over a thousand episodes to choose from, he has selected just six that capture the huge range and depth of the subjects he and his experts have tackled. In this sixth of his choices, we hear Melvyn Bragg and his guests in 2017 discussing new discoveries about dinosaurs. Their topic is the development of theories about dinosaur feathers, following discoveries of fossils which show evidence of those feathers. All dinosaurs were originally thought to be related to lizards (the word 'dinosaur' was created from the Greek for 'terrible lizard') but that now appears false. In the last century, discoveries of fossils with feathers established that at least some dinosaurs were feathered and that some of those survived the great extinctions and evolved into the birds we see today. There are still many outstanding areas for study, such as what sorts of feathers they were, where on the body they were found, what their purpose was and which dinosaurs had them. With Mike Benton Professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Bristol Steve Brusatte Reader and Chancellor's Fellow in Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Edinburgh and Maria McNamara Senior Lecturer in Geology at University College, Cork Producer: Simon Tillotson Spanning history, religion, culture, science and philosophy, In Our Time from BBC Radio 4 is essential listening for the intellectually curious. In each episode, host Melvyn Bragg and expert guests explore the characters, events and discoveries that have shaped our world

As tension and betrayal tighten, the episode becomes one of the series' most suspenseful chapters.Market Secrets & Stolen DocumentsThe adventure begins when Jack and Hannah visit the lively Mole-run Mall Market in the City-in-the-Sea. Among the wares, a stall owner named Ferris claims to sell harmless knick-knacks and scrap parts. But Hannah spots something else — a hidden box of old blueprints and documents related to a long-sealed lab run by a defunct corporation, Cybercore. She pockets the paperwork while Ferris is distracted. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Almost immediately, the stakes rise. The next morning, Jack discovers that a river's water supply has mysteriously dried up. He then learns that a dam has been built to divert the water — a project tied to the excavation of the ancient lab tied to those stolen blueprints. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Into the Lab: Betrayal and Mechanical MayhemSuspicion mounting, Jack sneaks into the excavation site disguised as a guard to investigate. Meanwhile, Hannah confronts Ferris at the dig site but is captured and brought inside the lab, where she learns that the excavation team is attempting to unseal a high-tech Cybercore facility. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Inside the lab, the pair discover the dangerous prototype: a tunneling robot known as RXB14. As Dr. Fessenden attempts to activate it, the robot goes rogue — and triggers all the hidden robots in storage, turning the lab into a deadly mechanical gauntlet. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.comChaos ensues. Jack and Hannah scramble to avoid lethal drills, collapsing structures, and malfunctioning automatons unleashed in tight corridors. The hosts unpack the panic, the desperation, and the narrow escape as the two fight their way out alive. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Collapse of the Dam — Nature's RevengeAfter escaping the lab, Jack realizes the only way to stop the robotic threat — and prevent future catastrophe — is to destroy the dam. He rigs the supports and floods the dig site, washing away the lab and the mining operation. The river returns to its natural course. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1In the aftermath, Jack and Hannah reflect on the danger of tampering with ancient technology and disregarding natural balance. The ruined lab stands as a warning: sometimes, digging for power unearths more danger than discovery.Final Thoughts: Mind Over Matter Pushes Survival and Ethics to the...

The fossils discovered in the Badlands of North Dakota is 66 million years old and may be what's called a “dinosaur mummy.” That means skin and tissue from the dinosaur could still be intact. Joining Minnesota Now host Nina Moini to talk about his discovery is Winona State geoscience professor and paleontologist Lee Beatty.

Ever feel like you want to embrace AI, but it is moving so fast? What you just learned is already outdated—and you're worried your competitors might be pulling ahead while you're still figuring it out? This episode is basically a reality check for you as a leader: AI isn't a "someday" thing anymore. It's here, it's democratized, and it's about to split industries into the "haves" who use it to accelerate growth and the "have-nots" who get left behind. If you're trying to grow a mid-to-large company, keep your team relevant, and avoid getting blindsided by tools your people are already experimenting with, this conversation meets you right where you are. You'll hear why AI-first thinking isn't hype—it's how you protect your business and unlock more creativity, speed, and capacity across every function. By listening, you'll walk away with: A clear, CEO-level way to think about AI as a multiplier, not just an efficiency tool—so you can free your team from the mundane and push more energy into innovation and growth. Practical guidance on adopting AI without freezing up, including how to handle the very real fear of job disruption by leveling up faster instead of resisting change. Concrete, cross-functional use cases you can copy immediately, from smarter customer and HR communications to rapid code generation, finance/M&A insight spotting, legal review, and hiring support—plus the "hybrid model" mindset to keep humans in the loop where it matters. Hit play now and steal these AI-first leadership moves so you can get ahead of the curve this quarter—not six months from now when the gap is harder to close. Check out: 04:30 — "AI will split the world into haves and have-nots" Jim tees up the urgency, and Eric immediately reinforces that this divide is coming in months, not years. 12:00 — "AI as the 5th tectonic tech shift + democratization" Eric walks through the internet → PC → web → iPhone → GenAI progression, and why democratized access changes everything for CEOs. 27:30 — "AI-first mindset + real business use cases (HR, finance, legal, hiring)" The conversation shifts into practical deployment: AI-first workflows, hybrid human+AI supervision, and concrete examples like HR response automation, M&A insight spotting, and interview-transcript evaluation. About Eric Vaughan Eric Vaughan is a globally sought-after speaker and pioneer of AI-driven digital clones, leading IgniteTech's AI-first transformation and reinventing products, services and the workforce while shaping the future of enterprise AI. He's known for launching two innovative AI products in just ten months and steering the high-profile acquisition of Khoros. Chances are that when most of us think of spinosaurs our minds will turn to the hulking, predatory sail-backed dinosaur that famously took down a T. Rex in the Jurassic Park movies. But thanks to their highly fragmented fossil records, in the real world, our knowledge of these fascinating, ancient creatures is far from complete. Where did they live? How did they live? And what did they really look like? In today's episode, we're joined by David Hone, a palaeontologist based at Queen Mary University of London, and Mark P. Witton, a palaeontologist and paleoartist based at the University of Portsmouth, to talk about their latest book, Spinosaur Tales, The Biology and Ecology of the Spinosaurs. They tell us how palaeontologists piece together details of dinosaurs' appearances and behaviours by painstakingly poring over fossil records, why we shouldn't believe everything we see in the movies, and why there's still so much to learn about these mysterious, and at times controversial, beasts. In this episode of History's Greatest Idiots, we dive deep into Buckland's practice of "zoophagy," his house that was basically a Victorian zoo gone wrong, and the most infamous dinner party in history where he ate the mummified heart of King Louis XIV of France. This is the story of how brilliance and complete insanity can coexist in one man who served his guests mice on toast while a hyena in academic robes wandered through the living room. The Zoophagist's Manifesto:William Buckland's lifelong goal: eat his way through the entire animal kingdomHis philosophy: "The stomach rules the world! The gang discusses two papers that are about dinosaurs, and that is all that connects them! The first paper investigates community structure during the Cretaceous, and the second paper describes a well preserved "mummy" of a duck-billed dinosaur. Meanwhile, Amanda is doing well (really she is now), Curt makes an awkward segue, and James has not seen Tremors.   Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The friends talk about two papers about big angry animals from a long time ago. The first paper looks at how many types of big angry animals were in a place before something bad happened and all the big angry animals died. Lots of people have said that the big angry animals might have been in trouble before the bad thing happen, and lots of other people say that they were probably not in trouble but we just don't have a lot of places that have the big angry animals in them for us to look and see what is happening at that time. This paper looks at a place and shows that it was during the time we want to see and that the types of animals in a place were a lot like the types of animals in a place before, so that means that it does not look like these big angry animals were having a bad time before the bad thing happened. The second paper looks at soft parts of a big angry animal that was dried out so that you can see skin and other bits under the skin. This lets the people find out what the feet look like for this animal, and other bits about how it moved.   References: Flynn, Andrew G., et al. The Superhero Show #608Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: Wild ChildThe Superhero Show: Wild Child — A Dangerous DiscoveryThis week on The Superhero Show, the hosts unpack Cadillacs and Dinosaurs episode 1.05, “Wild Child.” The adventure begins when Jack Tenrec and Hannah Dundee receive word of trouble at a nearby mine. Curious and cautious, they set out — and end up uncovering something extraordinary: a mysterious boy traveling with a pack of dinosaurs. The episode drags them into a conflict that tests their compassion, courage, and loyalty to both humanity and the Earth's ancient inhabitants.Into the Mines — A Strange New DiscoveryJack and Hannah arrive at the mining settlement after being summoned due to reports of disturbances. While investigating, they witness a bizarre and dangerous natural phenomenon: a herd of huge, prehistoric creatures stampeding toward them. When their Cadillac stalls at the edge of a cliff, things get tense fast — but then they spot it: a lone child among the beasts. This child emits a strange, high-pitched screech that causes the herd to veer away just in time. The moment sends a clear message: this is no ordinary human. The hosts note how chilling and mysterious that first reveal of the “wild child” feels, instantly shifting the tone from danger to wonder. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1The child passes as more than just a feral kid. Jack and Hannah — especially Hannah — are shaken by the boy's bond with the beasts and the suggestion that he may belong to the land more than to civilization. It raises ethical questions about trust, adaptation, and who really “owns” the Earth's wild creatures. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Rescue Mission, Betrayal — and the Poachers' InterestAs Jack continues investigating the mine's problems (a wounded creature stealing food supplies), Hannah sneaks off to try to rescue the boy. She finds him injured, perched on a cliff, under threat from a predatory “zeke.” With resourcefulness, she uses a vine to descend, confronts the danger, and rescues the child — proving that compassion and courage matter in this harsh world. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.comMeanwhile, Jack sets a trap: luring the wounded creature with crates of fruit, hoping to heal it rather than kill it. His plan works — until members of a poacher gang, led by the ruthless Hammer Terhune, notice the wild child's unique gift: he can communicate with dinosaurs (“slithers”). Hammer realizes how dangerous — and profitable — that gift could be. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1Hannah insists on bringing the child back to civilization for care, but Jack argues that the boy belongs to the wild. Their clash underscores the show's recurring theme of humanity vs. nature. The tension escalates when poachers burst into the city to hunt the child — and they're more determined than ever to catch him. randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com+1A Daring Escape and the True Home of the Wild ChildAs danger closes in, the wild child's bond with the dinosaurs comes...

(0:00)  The "War in the Woods" between two undefeated teams, Seymour and Woodland is tonight. Chaz and AJ invited Seymour first selectwoman AnneMarie Drugonis, and Bethany's Gerry Smith on the phone to make a friendly wager between the two 9-0 teams, with the losing town's leader to perform at the Toy Drive on December 12. (5:59)  Chaz and AJ played dozens of voicemails this morning from guests, who all picked their favorite Thanksgiving side dishes. One message did not fit the montage, Senator Blumenthal, who earned an entire segment on its own for the bizarre food choice and loud background conversation. (14:08)  Chaz has a Thanksgiving Day tradition with his wife, Jennifer, where he puts on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and angrily yells at the television the whole time. (20:07)  In Dumb Ass News, AJ had a heart-felt moment of thanks completely ruined, thanks to his number one nemesis, Siri. (26:15)

Choosing between a company pension and a lump-sum payout is one of the biggest financial decisions many pre-retirees will ever face—especially for workers in industries facing layoffs or restructuring, like the major oil companies in Houston right now. Lance Roberts & Danny Ratliff break down the key factors to consider when comparing a lifetime pension annuity versus taking a lump-sum distribution you can invest or convert into a private annuity. Using a real-world scenario from a viewer—age 64, a $700,000 lump-sum offer, and a sizable 401(k)—we explore the risks, trade-offs, and questions every retiree should ask before making the call. 0:00 - INTRO 0:19 - Why Nvidia Matters 2:53 - Yes, Virginia, Draw Downs Happen 9:50 - 2026 Economic Summit Preview 10:39 - It's Just a 3% Pullback 13:01 - The Risk Range Report explainer 16:56 - E-Mail Query: Lump Sum or Pension? 19:45 - Pensions are Going the Way of the Dinosaurs 21:29 - Do Not Have a Lump Sum Check Written to You 22:55 - Pensions have no COLA 25:01 - Plan for Higher Taxes in the Future 26:49 - The YouTube Poll 29:07 - Once You're Done, You're Done 33:58 - Lump Sums & Annuities: Be Careful! 38:30 - Understand Your Options

Horror Hill: A Horror Anthology and Scary Stories Series Podcast

Tonight on Horror Hill, host Erik Peabody invites you into an episode that defies logic, science, and perhaps even sanity itself. What begins as an innocent search for stories takes a delirious turn into the realm of the impossible—where forgotten lakes hide secrets older than the world above, and abandoned laboratories harbor creations that should never have drawn breath. In this double-feature of vintage madness, two long-buried tales rise from the depths to confront the limits of human understanding. Explorers push too far into the unknown. Scientists challenge the laws of nature itself. And when the earth finally answers, it answers with teeth. Expect the unexpected. Question everything. "The Monster of Lake Lametrie" by Wardon Allan Curtis – High in the Wyoming mountains lies a lake whispered about in old journals and frontier legends—a place where ancient things still move beneath the black water. When Professor McLennegan and his ailing companion Framingham arrive in search of scientific discovery and fresh mountain air, they instead encounter forces that defy biology, reason, and sanity. As strange upheavals churn the lake and impossible creatures rise to the surface, the professor is drawn toward an experiment that could change the boundaries of life itself. A haunting tale of obsession and awe, this story delves into the price of curiosity—and the thin line between discovery and madness. "The Day of the Dragon" by Guy Endore – Long dismissed by his colleagues and pushed to the margins of academia, Professor Paul Crabshaw dreams of vindication. His quiet resentment turns to dangerous ambition when he embarks on a secret experiment meant to revolutionize biology—but instead awakens something far older, stronger, and infinitely more terrifying than he could have imagined. As the consequences ripple outward, a lone witness recounts the bizarre chain of events that began in a dusty laboratory and spiraled into a nightmare beyond human control. A darkly comedic yet chilling exploration of scientific hubris, this tale asks what happens when myth takes flight… and the world becomes its feeding ground. One of the biggest debates in the dinosaur world is what was happening right before they went extinct. Were they already declining, or would they have thrived if not for the asteroid? Two recent studies shed some light on this question: one that analyzes a trove of fossils from New Mexico and suggests there was more diversity in the Americas than previously thought, and another that reanalyzes a long-debated juvenile T. rex fossil and finds it's likely a separate, smaller species.Host Ira Flatow is joined by authors on those separate studies, paleontologists Steve Brusatte and Lindsay Zanno.Guests: Dr. Lindsay Zanno is division head of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC.Dr. Steve Brusatte is a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Late last month, President Trump announced that the United States would be restarting nuclear weapons tests after a break of over 30 years. We've since learned that they won't be the explosive kind of tests, but this sent us down a rabbit hole — where we found a story about dinosaurs, Carl Sagan, and nuclear war. Because there was a moment in the not-so-distant past when we learned what drove the dinosaurs extinct... and that discovery, made during the Cold War, may have helped save humans from the same fate.
