Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio. This week the Film Rage Crew went to the seventh installment of the Jurassic franchise. This time Scarlett Johansen is battling dinosaurs. Then they were treated to the surprise of the weekend, the Canadian action flick 40 Acres where Danielle Deadwyler continues to impress. And then they watched the 41st Anniversary edition of This is Spinal Tap. Did the boys enjoy it as much as the first two dozen times they saw it? Then finally Jim and Bryce were forced to watch Chuck Norris and a dog in a movie that is for nobody and leaves the boys wondering, how did this thing even get greenlit in the first place? From PETER FRAMPTON to JOE PERRY (Aerosmith) to last week's tenth-anniversary guest, Night Ranger's BRAD GILLIS, guitar tech par excellence DARREN HURST has worked for several world-class guitar heroes, so we had go deep with the veteran guitar tech to find out his philosophies on rig design, guitar tone, and real-time gig survival — and the results are fascinating. How does Darren help Joe Perry achieve his "Dinosaurs eating cars" stage tone? Why does Brad Gillis make only one patch change per show, yet Darren makes 128?! How is Frampton's sprawling "guitar city" of rig "simple"? And we all know Night Ranger, but who the heck is "Day Ranger"? For the answers to these questions and more, just hit play. Thanks to Guitar Player and guitar player.com for making this happen. Enjoy! —JUDE GOLD, Host and Creator, No Guitar Is Safe

Send us a textDinosaurs and box office numbers find a way, even when creativity doesn't. The latest Jurassic installment stomped through theaters with a staggering $318 million global opening, proving once again that this prehistoric franchise remains Hollywood's gold standard for bankable intellectual property.Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali headline Jurassic World Rebirth, bringing star power to a franchise that's circling the creative drain yet continues to draw massive audiences. We dissect what works in this seventh installment – primarily Gareth Edwards' undeniable talent for spectacular visual set pieces – and what falls flat. From the breathtaking Titanosaurus sequence in tall grass to the genuinely thrilling underwater T-Rex chase (finally realizing a sequence from Crichton's original novel), the film delivers exactly what audiences expect from the franchise: dinosaurs hunting humans in increasingly elaborate scenarios. But beneath the impressive technical achievement lies familiar franchise fatigue. Characters feel underdeveloped despite the talented cast, emotional beats are undercut by the need to move to the next set piece, and the film's structure often feels algorithmically designed to hit nostalgic beats from previous entries rather than charting bold new territory. As this film kicks off another planned trilogy, we question where the franchise can possibly go from here without completely rehashing familiar territory. We also discuss Christopher Nolan's mysterious Odyssey trailer that premiered exclusively before Jurassic World screenings and look ahead to next week's Superman release – another major franchise reboot that faces similar challenges in balancing fan expectations with creative revitalization. Can James Gunn deliver something fresh in a crowded superhero landscape, or are we destined for another case of franchise fatigue? Join us as we explore these questions and more on this week's Excuse the Intermission.Support the show

This week we try something a little different — the ⚡️THUNDER ROUND ⚡️ as Jeff Goldblum says in Jurassic Park Uno, “Your [science nerds] were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!”In this special episode, Julian and Trace snagged every dinosaur related question we could fit in a shaving cream can. Then, like a couple of velociraptors in a kitchen we made a huge mess of things. There's a new Jurassic World movie, so we figured if not now — then when? Maybe people are going to go DINO-CRAZY! (we hope). If you have a Jurassic-leaning friend send them this episode; we spared no expense on it!QUESTIONSJulian:“How is it possible for the largest male dinosaurs to mount the females?” from Stephen“What if the dinosaurs were able to evolve further- would they have eventually gotten to "human" level brains/consciousness?” from Tori“What if dinosaurs weren't wiped out what would things be like?” from Sam“What if pterosaurs had survived the mass extinction that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs?” from Adele“What would have happened if the meteor that caused dinosuars to go extinct never hit the earth?” from Steven“What would happen if a meteor hit a flat earth?” from TylerTrace:"If there had been an intelligent dinosaur species which evolved some civilization, would we able to detect it?" from Udo (?)“What does a dinosaur taste like?” from Pat”How likely would it be for something like Jurassic park to exist in the near future?” from MayaDo you have an absurd question? “I'm simply saying that life, uh, finds a way.”Dr. Ian Malcolm, master of understatementOh those silly humans in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies. When will they ever learn? You'd think that maybe after the events of the first film they might take a breather on trying to mess with nature, or at least with dinosaurs specifically, but nope! But if they did, we wouldn't have all these fun movies where said humans get their just desserts as, um, dessert for all manner of resurrected dinosaurs. The quality of the assorted sequels in the Jurassic Park franchise are a mixed bag, but the original 1993 film? That one is a pretty unassailable summer movie classic, and it's the one that we're focusing on for this week's episode. Specifically, we're diving in to the question of how the dinosaurs, engineered to only be female, changed their sex to male in order to breed and thus create an entire host of new problems for the unwitting scientists. We also, as you might expect, take a look at the “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should” of it all. Of course you do! Read the books! The first movie in the franchise is based on Michael Crichton's bestselling 1983 novel of the same name. He wrote its sequel, The Lost World, at the behest of Steven Spielberg, who wanted to make another Jurassic Park movie, and Crichton decided he would like the equivalent weight of a brontosaurus in cash.Dinosaur birds? The ancient bird-like dinosaur that Hakeem is referring to is the archaeopteryx, which is kind of the link between modern birds and dinosaurs, but read more here to get a better sense of this distinction. They can do WHAT?!?For a brief list of animals (no mammals can do this on their own!) that can change their sex when needed, we direct you here. Frogs, of course, are the most relevant specifically to Jurassic Park and our discussion today, but according to Hakeem, if you wanted to be more scientifically accurate, pay more attention to the birds and reptiles on this list!Mutation as Stress ResponseSadly, humans can't do this RIGHT NOW but there's plenty of scientific precedent for it.A Brief History of the End Times (for certain creatures)Some light and fluffy reading for you, an overview of extinction level events in history!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The new How to Train Your Dragon is currently in theaters and we took a look at the evolutionary possibilities of dragons right here. Exploring the connection between dragons and dinosaurs opens up a dialogue that bridges mythology, religion, and science. This discussion is not merely academic; it touches upon fundamental beliefs about our origins and existence. By examining scriptural texts, such as those in the Book of Mormon, which reference dragons, and comparing them with fossil records and historical accounts, we begin to see a pattern that suggests these creatures were more than myth. The idea that dragons could breathe fire or possess venomous capabilities akin to certain modern animals adds a layer of plausibility to their existence. Moreover, the discovery of soft tissue in dinosaur fossils and carbon dating results that contradict the established timeline further fuel this debate. These findings invite us to question the rigid frameworks of evolutionary theory and consider alternative explanations that include divine intervention and intelligent design. In doing so, we embrace a worldview that acknowledges the complexity and mystery of creation, celebrating the possibility that dragons and dinosaurs once roamed the earth together.⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️:00:00:00 - Did God Create Dinosaurs and Dragons? “Why do we keep watching the same movies over and over again?” That's the question that kicks off a fiery and funny roundtable on this episode of The Ben and Skin Show on 97.1 The Eagle.Join hosts Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray as they dive headfirst into the summer movie madness—where Brad Pitt's new F1 film is burning rubber at the box office, and yet another Jurassic World sequel is stomping into theaters with “water dinosaurs that punch like alligators.”Krystina, who saw the F1 movie ten days before release, breaks down why it's basically Top Gun on wheels—and why that's exactly what America wants. Meanwhile, the crew debates the endless recycling of franchises, from Mission: Impossible to Jurassic Park, and whether nostalgia is fueling creativity or killing it.

When the smash-success Jurassic Park first hit theaters in 1993, it inspired a generation of dinophiliacs and helped to usher in a new “golden age of paleontology.” But it also froze the public's perception of dinosaurs in time, and popularized inaccuracies that people still believe are true today. So what happens when the biggest source of information on a scientific field comes from a fictional monster movie? In this episode, three Jurassic Park super-fans (one paleontologist and two podcasters) try to sort it all out. Featuring Gabriel-Philip Santos. This episode was originally published in 2022. While there are a lot of dinosaur fossils, and a lot of plant fossils, the precise connection between the two has been something of a mystery. Now, researchers report that they've found what's called a cololite, fossilized gut contents, in the remains of a sauropod—a massive, long-necked plant-eater. The dino's last meal dates back 95 to 100 million years. Paleontologist Stephen Poropat joins Host Flora Lichtman to dig into the mysteries of a dinosaur's tummy. And, for prairie dogs, communication is key. The rodents' yips and barks can warn when danger is near—and not just to other prairie dogs. A new study suggests that birds called long-billed curlews are eavesdropping on this chatter to learn when a predator is lurking nearby. Using speakers and a taxidermied badger on wheels, ornithologists are untangling the social dynamics of black-tailed prairie dogs. Host Flora Lichtman talks with study author Andrew Dreelin about this eavesdropping behavior and what it means for conservation.Guests:Dr. Stephen Poropat is a paleontologist and deputy director of the Western Australian Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Centre at Curtin University in Perth, Australia.Andrew Dreelin is a research fellow with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and a PhD candidate at Northern Illinois University.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
