Have you noticed the trees around you lately—maybe they seem extra nutty? It turns out this is a “masting” year, when trees make more nuts, seeds, and pinecones than usual. Science Staff Writer Elizabeth Pennisi joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss the many mysteries of masting years.  Next, Producer Meagan Cantwell talks with Jean-Laurent Casanova, a professor at Rockefeller University and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, about his review article on why some people are more vulnerable to severe disease from viral infections. This is part of a special issue on inflammation in Science. Finally, in this month's book segment on race and science, host Angela Saini talks with author Beverly Daniel Tatum about her seminal 2003 book, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race. Transformational Leader Podcast

Book 11 of the Leadership Book Mastermind series is Good to Great by Jim Collins. The Challenge: Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning. But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness? The Study: For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great? “Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Luke 21:32–33As we approach the final days of this liturgical year, we continue to read about the end of the world. Today we read that both Heaven and earth, as they currently are, will pass away. This is worth pondering. We know that life is full of change. It has been said that the one thing that never changes is change itself. Everything else changes. But when it comes to earth, it is hard to believe that it will one day “pass away.” Some scientists believe that the earth has existed for over four and a half billion years. That's a long time! Now consider the fact that Jesus prophesied the end of this earth as we know it today. When will it happen? Only God knows.Heaven, as it exists today, is also prophesied by our Lord to pass away. Heaven, as it is right now, is a pure spiritual reality in which the only corporeal bodies present are those of Jesus and our Blessed Mother. The rest of Heaven consists of the Divine Essence, the souls of those who have been redeemed and the angels of God. But if Heaven even passes away, what awaits?First of all, the only reason that these two realities, Heaven and earth, will pass away in their current form is because, at the Final Judgment, there will be a “New Heavens and a New Earth,” as spoken of in the Book of Revelation. At that time, Heaven and earth will be united as one, and this new creation will exist for eternity. But is there anything that is currently eternal? Anything that will never experience change? We humans will be changed at the resurrection of the dead, the angels will encounter a new home, so to speak, and God will establish a new and permanent Kingship. But, according to Jesus' teaching today, the one thing that will remain are His words: “...my words will not pass away.” Again, this is worth pondering. In a world filled with change and uncertainty, we need some form of stability. And that stability is the Truth found in the Word of God. The Word of God, as revealed to us through the Scriptures, must become our rock foundation upon which our whole lives are built and exist. Pondering, praying with, meditating on, and believing the Word of God enables us to stand on firm and unchanging spiritual ground as we go through the change of this life and even the changes that will come at the end of time. Though this may seem somewhat mysterious in nature, it is a helpful truth to understand and believe. Everything will pass away except Jesus' words. Thus, the most secure thing we can do in life is to cling to His words and never let go.Reflect, today, upon the importance of truly immersing yourself in the Word of God. How much time do you spend each week reading it, praying with it and allowing it to become your daily food? The Word of God is not simply a book of teachings meant to inspire you or guide you. The Word of God is a Living Word. It is God in His unchangeable form. God, in His essence, will never change, and engaging Him through the revelation of His written Word is one essential way by which you will be able to experience true stability in life and prepare for each and every change to come until the final order of life is permanently established. My Eternal Word, You are unchanging and eternal. You are the rock foundation upon which I must always rely. As I continue to experience the many changes encountered in this life, please enter my soul through Your written Word, so that I will find the stability I need. As I stand firm in You, I look forward with joy to the New Heavens and New Earth that await. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! I carried it as part of my identity, for example, I am depressed, I am anxious. Now when I'm experiencing an emotion, actually I am grateful for it because this shows me that it's linked to something deeper. I will go into my emotional state and work on understanding what that emotion is connected to. Then I will start working on the underlying trauma or cause of that emotional state. This is true especially if I realize I am over-exaggerating my reaction to something. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is one of those things that's very powerful because it supersedes or interjects itself into your body and into your mindset. I suggest doing intentional breathing, a deep breath into your belly, and breathing out, and focus on that for mindfulness. You can focus on breathing in calm energy and breathing out anxious energy, or breathing in happy energy and breathing out depressed energy. This is a very good way to come back to center and come back to focus because it takes your mind off of all other extraneous things that may be distracting you. It was more feeling like I was left out a lot of times. Having developed a better sense of self when I was younger, if I'd had some kind of support, it would have been wonderful. When my youngest son was in first or second grade, there was a girl who was picking on him and he was really angry about it. He said, “I told the teacher and she won't listen because she's grown and I'm just a boy.” There was this whole dynamic that the teacher was just not understanding what was going on. I told him, “there's a reason that she's acting that way towards you. This is not about you, it's about what she's going through in her life. It's about her misery.” I said, “what she's feeling inside is so much harder for her than what she's giving to you, so you need to think about that. When she's mean to you, think, she must be really going through something.” He said that he got to where he could talk to her and he said, “mom, I found out that her parents were getting divorced. She was really angry because her mom was living with somebody else and she missed her dad.” He said, “I understand now”. News: Olaf has worked his magic, because something is coming to Disneyland that was never expected to: MagicBands! Not just any MagicBands, the new MagicBand +. The new MagicBand+ will offer “glow with the show” type color changing lights, haptic vibrations, and gesture recognition. The new version will allow guests to interact with things in the park, making it a more immersive experience. The previous features of the MagicBands like theme park tickets, room keys, and purchases will also still be available. MagicBand+ is expected to debut in Disneyland in 2022, after Walt Disney World. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ and https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/09/just-announced-magicband-will-debut-in-2022-at-walt-disney-world-resort-as-part-of-50th-anniversary-celebration/ The cancelling of the new hotel on the west side of Downtown Disney a few years ago left everyone wondering what was going to happen to the space that is now empty, like the old AMC theater location. At the Destination D event this weekend, we got a glimpse into what is planned. The old AMC theater building will be demolished, and a new green space with room for guests to lounge and relax will be in it's place. The area will also have a stage for performances. This means that the current Starbucks, Earl of Sandwich, and Sugarboo & Co. will again be forced to close for a second time. The concept art does show a building to the east of the area that may offer a place for these establishments in the future, but no announcements have been made. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ It has been a while since we have heard anything about the new Disney Vacation Club tower coming to the Disneyland Hotel in the future. Work has been progressing on the site recently, and Disney showed off some more concept art from the project, including what the rooms will look like. The new room design will take inspiration from the “sketching style of Walt Disney himself.” The new tower will feature 350 guest rooms and should open in 2023. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/20/photos-take-a-look-inside-the-new-dvc-tower-coming-to-disneyland-hotel/ The new dinign area for Harbor Galley opened last week, sooner than expected. Pelican's Landing is the name and theme of this new seating area along the Rivers of America between Harbor Galley across from the Haunted Mansion, and the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. The area has a lot of nautical details and adds a lot of seating in this area of the park. Some informational signs are also on display, giving some information about the Mark Twain, Sailing Ship Columbia, and some of the local plants and nautical equipment. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ The day has finally come! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is testing standby only, with no boarding group required. This is testing our theory that the attraction is in so much demand because of the queue system. We will see this week what the wait times are with just standby. The removal of the virtual queue is also a first step in heading towards Genie+ and Lightning Lane coming to Disneyland in the future. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ With all of the holiday fun going on inside the parks, Downtown Disney has joined in on the fun as well. The Disney Ultimate Toy Drive, which supports Toys for Tots is available, in addition to lots of treats, drinks, food, and merchandise offerings. Of course there is also entertainment! Holiday Harmony, The Moonrays, and The Sugarplums a capella carolers will perform in the evenings Fridays through Sundays November 26th through December 26th. Main stage bands will also perform near the Downtown Disney District main stage. Of course the Star Wars: Tales fro the Galaxy's Edge will also entertain guests. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/11/enjoy-the-splendor-of-the-season-at-downtown-disney-district-at-the-disneyland-resort/ An interesting take on gift cards is coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World soon. The Holiday Pin Series features a gift card, along with a character pin as an added bonus. The gift cards with pins must be activated at $100, with the limited edition pin included at no additional cost. There are 4 sets, with Stitch, Mickey Mouse, Grogu, and Olaf. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/11/first-look-new-100-holiday-gift-cards-with-pins-coming-to-walt-disney-world-and-disneyland-resort/ One of Teresa's favorite details that was added outside of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout has been having some issues recently. The “space goo” that is scattered around the area has started to shrink in some areas, causing the area to be uneven. Some of the goo has even come undone from the walkway, leaving holes. No word on if Disney is going to repair, replace, or just remove this theme detail. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ The vote on the cast member union agreement did not go as smooth as it should have. Some voting irregularities came up, such as cast members getting the wrong park ballot, observers being kicked out before counting was complete, and rejected ballots. We are waiting for what the next step will be, and will pass that information along to you once we know something. – https://www.micechat.com/306249-disneyland-contract-troubles-leave-cast-concerned/ Discussion Topic: Author and Former Cast Member Bruce Edwards – Main Street Magic Shop Amazon – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09J7HJ851 Barnes and Noble – https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/nothing-up-my-sleeve-but-pixie-dust-bruce-edwards/1140355973 Etsy – https://www.etsy.com/shop/bruceedwardsbooks

"The first and basic act of theological work is prayer." - Karl Barth We've all met religious assholes. Some days it's hard to avoid them. You know who I'm talking about, don't you? The ones that act pious and flaunt their faith publicly as if they're scoring points with almighty. Or maybe they're the ones that constantly post pictures of inspiring landscapes with out-of-context scriptures, so you know they're more holy. They come in many shapes and forms, but those who play in piety cosplay are the worst. You've felt their disapproving looks or heard their backhanded compliments. Heck, you may end up sitting next to one on Thanksgiving. I can't stand those people. Jesus couldn't stand those people either. No, I'm not joking. Christ was downright snarky to them. This week, we continue our discussion about the ethics of the Kingdom of God found in the Sermon on the Mount. Taking up the teachings in Matthew 6, we see Jesus move on from issues of the heart towards issues of spiritual practice in public life. Namely, he's discussing giving to the poor, public prayer, and fasting. In a very pointed fashion, Christ calls out the religious tryhards and posers. The Kingdom of God has no room for their drama and bullshit. That's not how it rolls. The religious are often too consumed with far-off spirituality, fantasies of a hereafter that may not even be. For the Kingdom of God to be manifested in the future, something has to happen now. With an ever present immediacy, the Kingdom of God, as Christ puts it, is always concerned with the here and now. Issues of justice, equality, humility, and compassion are the hallmarks of this new way of being. Jesus was radical to the religious establishment of the time. His worlds still cut sharply today too. Let us be part of making a better tomorrow by starting to walk out grace and compassion today.     We'll talk about all that and more snark! Plus, this week's Christian Crazy features: Greg Locke, Mario Murillo, Rick Wiles, Bishop Larry Gaiters and Mark Taylor. The same woman who wrote “Mary Had a Little Lamb” also influenced popular American traditions like having a Christmas tree in your home and women wearing a white wedding gown for their marriage ceremony. She also is considered the godmother of our Thanksgiving because of her relentless petitions to Presidents and lawmakers to create the National holiday, which finally happened under President Lincoln. But do you even know her name?! In this week's episode, we talk with Melanie Kirkpatrick, author of the book "Lady Editor: Sarah Josepha Hale and the Making of the Modern American Woman." The Lord's “Secretary of Divine Mercy,” St. Faustina, wrote what has become a modern-day spiritual classic — a blueprint for living a sacramental life in union with Jesus Christ. For anyone who may think the Diary is too thick and formidable, Fr. Joseph Roesch, MIC, has the solution. Join him for a few minutes each day as he reads from the Diary and offers commentary. Over the span of one year, you will have “read" the Diary, beginning to end, and absorbed its rich teachings. To order a copy of the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, visit  ShopMercy.org. Support our Ministries here.
