Maybe Betsy is still riding high from the last American Library Association conference she attended, but we're feeling like libraries deserve lots of lovely attention. And what better book to use to that purpose than this well-known collaboration between Patricia C. McKissack and Jerry Pinkney? Can you believe that we've never done a McKissack book before? Pinkney we've definitely done before (including Sam and the Tigers, John Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, and Mirandy and Brother Wind). We discuss how Kate spoils where "someplace special" is pretty early, segregated public benches, rando celebrities, and what it means to work "without permission or pay." Cheryl McKissack Daniel, CEO of McKissack & McKissack, discusses the future of diversity in the construction industry in this episode of the Women on the Move podcast with host Sam Saperstein. As the leader of the oldest minority- and women-owned construction firm in the U.S., Cheryl emphasizes the importance of diversity in all project phases. Her firm, with roots dating back to 1790, has a rich history of overcoming racial and gender barriers. Cheryl's great-grandfather, Moses McKissack III, and his brother Calvin became the first Black licensed architects in the United States in 1920. Cheryl's journey began with degrees in civil engineering from Howard University, followed by experience at Weidlinger Associates and Turner Construction in New York City. Her mother, who took over the family business after Cheryl's father suffered a stroke, taught her the importance of relationship-building and embracing her identity as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Cheryl commuted between New York and Nashville to learn from her mother, gaining insights into business development and staff management. She stresses the value of maintaining long-term relationships and being true to oneself as a woman leader. Cheryl is proud of the progress women have made in leadership roles across various sectors and believes their influence has positively changed business practices. In this conversation, Pres McKissack interviews Anna McKissack about how to effectively articulate and communicate the value proposition of Keller Williams. Anna shares her experience rising through the ranks at KW and how that experience helps her differentiate KW when talking to recruits. She emphasizes defining vague buzzwords and focusing on the specifics of KW's training, events, and resources. Anna recommends leveraging one's own experience and growth at KW to demonstrate the company's ability to change lives. Pres agrees that agents should focus on growing their own businesses and lives through what KW offers in order to authentically share how KW has benefited them. The overall message is that agents need to clearly define and provide specifics about KW's value to stand out from other companies and effectively recruit others to the KW model. Cheryl, a black woman and a fifth-generation business owner, proves that everybody has the ability to create their own destiny.2) We can all play a part in getting projects like the Affirmation Tower to finally break ground. It all comes down to getting the word out, holding our leaders accountable, and creating a groundswell of support.3) Getting into the construction industry doesn't necessarily require getting a construction or architecture degree. In celebration of Black History Month, our guest for today is Eric T. McKissack. Eric is a graduate of the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA program. Currently, he is an Investment Executive and Independent Board Director at different companies and nonprofits, including FlexShares Funds and Morgan Stanley Pathway Funds. He is also a Board Member of McKissack & McKissack, a privately-held, family business that is a national architectural, engineering, and program and construction management firm.Even though he is an only child, Eric grew up in a large extended family of business leaders and entrepreneurs who had a strong family identity. In fact, his grandfather and great uncle were the first Black registered architects in the US. Because of the influence of the family business, Eric went to MIT for architecture but ended up in Sloan to pursue his own interests in business. He started in banking but then worked many years in investment management before starting Channing with his partners. He shares his journey from that pivotal moment, getting his executive MBA while founding an investment firm, how they overcame the challenges along the way, and how one can succeed in this space. This episode is valuable for people who aspire to start their own investment firms or join the board of directors as Eric shares his wealth of experiences and motivations to be in the boardroom of successful organizations.Episode Quotes:On starting his own investment firm“Another pivotal moment in my career, I got to a point where I felt that either I would stay where I was indefinitely, and that would be the duration of my career and be my experiences, or I could have the experience of starting a firm of my own. While I had joined Ariel early on, I was not a founder. And so, it was like a fork in the road kind of opportunity in my mind, and I took it.”On Channing, his investment firm, surviving the great recession“Certainly, starting a firm is challenging at any time and place. But also, the industry had changed a lot from early in my career. It wasn't long before the Great Recession hit, so there were a lot of challenges. Nevertheless, we were able to survive those. I always say that we got through that period, and Lehman and Bear Stearns didn't. So, we felt we had something to be proud of, to get through the great recession. And the firm continues on with my partners.”On investment markets being all about human nature“Sometimes, periods of overvaluation and undervaluation can last very long, longer than the patience of your clients. Clients may not be patient enough to recognize that there's a bubble brewing and want to go where they think the grass is greener, to another manager, or do a reallocation. Ultimately, markets are still about human nature no matter how much technology is introduced into the process. And human nature can sometimes lead to business outcomes that are not favorable even for the most talented investment managers.”On raising capital for their first fund as a minority-owned firm“There are always challenges raising money in any business or any investment entity. And I can't say that the challenges were strictly based on pure discrimination. But I think what often happens is that certain types of resumes get more of a path or more of a benefit of the doubt than others. That's not to say that doesn't happen for some diverse candidates, that they have the same kind of resumes, but that wasn't the background that I had.I came out of a minority-owned firm to launch another minority firm. And while that firm had a great track or reputation, I don't think we necessarily got the same benefit of the doubt. It was more like, "Okay, well, let's see what you can do in this new environment. And then we'll give you money if we like what we see."Who succeeds in founding their own investment firm and why“The people who are most successful at it are those that have been able to develop track records through prior experience and have the kind of blue-chip backgrounds. But very often too, it takes a certain person to decide they want to do that because if you're at a successful firm and you have a great track record, then a lot of people are very comfortable staying there because they are very often making very high compensation. There may be golden handcuffs. There are all kinds of reasons why starting a business is something you have to be highly motivated about.”Show Links:Eric on LinkedInHarlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead Isabel WilkersonSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

In this series, Linda and Pres McKissack discuss the Magic Formula that helped Linda build her real estate business to 200 transactions AND grow her profit share: Relationships + Validity + Value / Time = Success. In part 1, they discuss the first part of the formula, Relationships. Pres shares how he learned relationship building while listening to Linda make Profit Share phone calls to other agents, and Linda shares tactics she used to recruit those agents over to grow her Profit Share. Linda explains how one of the best ways to recruit someone is to connect them with someone who they can see themselves in so they can envision what their future at Keller Williams would look like. She also shares an epiphany she had when she realized it wasn't right to stop changing lives with the knowledge she had. Pres discusses how a key indicator of success with agents who excel at Profit Share is tying the income to something that matters to you; in his case, he knows the income he generates from Profit Share pays for daycare for his kids. To learn more about the Profit Share Mastery course, text McKissack to 33444 or go to www.profitsharemastery.com
On this episode, Pres explains how he got into profit share after growing up in a family focused on real estate. He shares how he got to see his family go from being $600,000 in debt to living at their freedom number by mastering real estate and then going on to master profit share. He discusses how when he was thinking of working on Profit Share himself, he didn't want to go after seasoned agents, but wanted to go for new agents instead. He talked to someone who had been doing this effectively and started a recruiting website with his childhood friend Nick. Nick now works the website and reaching out to new agents full time, and last year brought over 130 people to Keller Williams. Linda and Pres also discuss how you can constantly be talking to people about what you do for work, and you can bring people into your downline from those day to day encounters.
