Shel Silverstein wrote a beautiful and supremely short poem that perfectly fits today's topic. The poem is called “Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda,” and in just seven short lines, Silverstein sums up the ultimate way to prevent regret. He tells us that all those woulda-coulda-shouldas vanish with one little “did.” Doing beats wishing every day. So if we were sitting in the same room together, sharing a cup of tea, and you asked me what I thought your next piece should be, I'd have to ask you a question right back, “What do you think you want to do?” Life is filled with “shoulds” and “have tos;” our music doesn't need to be. Our music is personal to us. The music we play, our repertoire, is something that reflects what we like and who we are. It is a personal expression at every playing level. Your personal musical expression starts from the very first day you are capable of playing a melody on the harp. Your music is in you and your music is you. So if you need to choose your next piece to learn, it should be something you want to learn. Back to our conversation at the tea table. When I ask you what piece you'd like to do, you are probably going to tell me you don't know. So we'll dig a little deeper. If you are thinking that there is a skill you need to develop and you're looking for a piece that will help you do that, that's great. I can suggest half a dozen pieces that will help you with that specific skill. But have you considered trying a sort of piece you've never done before? Or what about that bucket list piece that you aren't sure if you're ready for? This is the problem; there are too many choices. There is simply too much music in the world, and it's impossible to play everything we want to. So we need to choose. And what if you chose to make your next piece one that created a “did,” filled a want, or prevented a future regret. That's what I want to help you with today. I want to give you a little system to help you choose. I also decided to take a sort of light-hearted, fun approach to this topic, so since today is the fifth of May, I've created five possible categories to choose from in honor of Cinco de Mayo. After all, we can't take ourselves too seriously! A songwriter, a cartoonist, a Playboy legend?, and a beloved children's author. This week, we learn all about Shel Silverstein. NOTE: Please forgive us for the technical issues in this week's episode. It was... a struggle.
Eli Pancamo's living room, now a makeshift office, is a polemical museum dedicated to counterculture. Works from artists like Erik Foss, Captain Outrageous and Bast hang with a story behind each piece. To his right, a pinball machine from Key West’s Star Roller Rink backs up to the late Shel Silverstein’s piano—something Pancamo taught himself to play over the past several months. His surroundings are a symbolic reflection to the juxtaposition of his psyche—both as an artist and intellectualist. During his rise as a notable restauranteur in Key West, Eli avoided the meritocratic path to success. His natural tendency is the road less traveled, where every failure and success are utilized as creative fuel. So it came as no surprise when he privately shared with me he was dabbling in AI (or Artificial Intelligence) and invited me over to showcase a platform he believes can change the world. Pictured: Eli Pancamo reads from Rick Rubin's "The Creative Act: A Way of Being" from his Seminary Street home in Key West. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's another Bubbles' Mushrooms Monday Morning with all of your favorite hosts! This week we got Brian back again so naturally Jac kicks us off with a story about being annoyed with Frederick Meijer Gardens this weekend. Luke found the gardens enjoyable for people watching, but Jac saw a mad little girl and thought it was stupid. Next we have discussion about whether moms or dads are dumber in commercials, talk about where butterflies come from, Katie is going to see Steve from Blue's Clues and is gonna get Christina Ricci on the show, Brian hates The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and also has a new gift for the show in the form of a ALF doll! You won't even believe what accessories come with ALF and what kind of websites ALF is on... Anyway, Brian also gives a brief history of ALF, Edward shows us the ALF porn he drew when he was a kid, we look up some other people's ALF porn on a website and we use all of our collected ALF data to write our own ALF episode. This may be the dumbest episode of Bubbles' Mushrooms yet. The Country Music Dads dive headlong into the world of children's literature, pop culture and its intersection with country music. We discuss the viral video of Ludacris' incredible rapping of the book Llama Llama Red Pajama, discuss our favorite kids' books, which ones would make incredible country music songs and who should cut them. Show Notes: 2:22: The Kids Books We Love and Love to Hate: Dave and Donnie discuss the nighttime classics and some modern-day page turners for kids (and those reading them to kids). And what would a podcast episode be without some conflict -- so we jumped on a few we wish would just fall behind the bookshelf. 21:27: Books That Sound Like Country Songs: Before diving into who should sing our kids' book songs, the Country Music Dads explore the fairly significant crossover between country music songwriting and children's book writing -- and some of those people who did both. Namely, Shel Silverstein. 38:34: Who Should Sing These Kids' Book Country Songs? From Colter Wall to Miranda Lambert, the Country Music Dads consider the best artists to bring these books to life. 46:57: Dad Life Sound Check: This recurring segment is an opportunity for Dave and Donnie to discuss a song that is hitting home in recent days. For Dave, "Buy Me a Boat" by Chris Janson had been resonating in his house, while Lasers Lasers Birmingham's "Shorter Letter" was touching a chord for Donnie.52:22: Change My Mind: Donnie challenges Dave to think differently about the glories of shopping at Costco -- from the sea of beautiful TVs, to rows of top-shelf bulk-size booze to Costco staples, like rotisserie chicken, availability of eggs and the $1.50 hot dog and soda. This week we are avoiding our shadow-selves while we discuss “Underneath”! We're talking the return of Doggett's articles, how apparently Scully is the only one around here who can solve cases, how absurd it is that a guy named Damon Kaylor is somehow not the killer, whether the Beardo Weirdo is a Shel Silverstein creation, and workshop “cyclepaths” as a concept. Is this anything? We dunk on Doggett's old partner Dunk, discuss the relationship between necks and stress, theorize that Doggett might solve more cases if he covered himself in sticky tape and carried around a big net, and notice that these New York accents are getting stronger by the second. And remember: I'm not rich, my parents are. That's why I've inherited their giant mansion in Brooklyn :)Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Instagram!

He highlights Silverstein's diverse contributions to music and literature, including his work with Johnny Cash and Dr. Hook. The episode transitions to Larry's recent experience at a Rolling Stones concert at Soldier Field in Chicago. We dive into a conversation about embracing future life phases today on ThimbleberryU. Amy and Jag discuss the importance of planning for both financial and non-financial aspects of our future. Amy emphasizes the significance of visualizing and imagining the life we want to lead, pointing out that financial planning isn't just about money—it's about making our desired future a reality. This involves considering future expenses and the lifestyle we aspire to maintain.Amy highlights the challenges people face when trying to envision their future, including fear of the unknown and the difficulty of imagining life changes. She shares personal stories to illustrate these challenges, such as her fear of financial independence after college (this contrasts with Jag's approach to college). We explore how different life stages, like becoming parents or transitioning to retirement, come with their own sets of fears and uncertainties. The conversation then shifts to the importance of being clear about what we want in later life stages to avoid being unprepared financially. Amy stresses the value of having specific goals to motivate saving and planning for the future. We discuss how changing priorities or goals is natural and not problematic as long as there's a willingness to adapt and adjust financial plans accordingly.Amy offers strategies for looking ahead and connecting with our future selves, such as setting aside time for contemplation, getting in touch with our values, and recognizing how today's choices impact our future. She shares personal anecdotes about preparing to enjoy activities with future grandchildren and the importance of taking care of oneself to maintain health and vitality in later years. Finally, we touch on the concept of living in limbo and the stress it causes due to a perceived lack of control. Amy suggests finding at least one aspect of a situation that can be influenced or controlled as a way to navigate forward. And as a bonus, you'll hear a couple of Shel Silverstein references. To get in touch with Amy and her team at Thimbleberry Financial, call 503-610-6510 or visit thimbleberryfinancial.com.

As a child, Jamie Engel devoured Shel Silverstein's poetry and reveled in the adventures of Mary Poppins, her imagination a garden where stories grew wild and untamed. Now an accomplished screenwriter, novelist, and producer, Jamie joins us to share her evolution from fan fiction aficionado to master of the dramatic cliffhanger. Her journey is one of unexpected twists, including an impromptu dance with romance genres and the creation of 'Just Jake', a project that pirouetted from screenplay to novel with the grace of a seasoned storyteller. Strap in for a ride through the vibrant corridors of Jamie's mind, where the supernatural becomes the norm, and each page turned is a step deeper into her enthralling world. If you've ever wondered what it's like to transition from the quiet introspection of novel writing to the collaborative cacophony of filmmaking, Jamie's tale lights the way. We'll explore the nuances of breathing life into a screenplay and the thrill of seeing it reborn as a full-bodied novel, with Jamie's perspective as the guiding star. The conversation whirls from her self-publishing hustle to Broadway dreams of bringing a "Back to the Future" musical into the future, and the glitzy aspirations of Hollywood. You'll walk away from this episode with the infectious desire to chase your own dreams, whether they lie on the streets of New York City or within the flickering lights of a silver screen.Support the showFollow us on Instagram @spacecoastpodcastSponsor this show Want to watch our shows? https://youtube.com/@spacecoastpodcast

"Books can be the perfect prescriptions to let us know that we're going to be okay.” - John SchuJohn Schu's entire life has been shaped by books. As a kid, he fell in love with Shel Silverstein; Emily Dickinson comforted him as he was battling an eating disorder, and “The One and Only Ivan,” well, that book changed his life. In fact, it nearly put him into debt (he tells that story in the episode!)The powerful impact books have had on his life inspired him to dedicate his life to sharing this power with everyone he can. His career as an educator led him to the library, the library led him across America, and now he has started a new career as a writer of stories himself.John made his debut with "This is a School," followed by "This is a Story" and "The Gift of Story." However, in his latest work, "Louder Than Hunger," he bravely delves into a new realm of vulnerability. This semi-autobiographical tale draws from the most challenging period in his life, navigating the depths of his battle with anorexia. In this episode, Mr. Schu, as in Mr.SchuReads, tells us about the transformative reads that shaped his life and explains how some of those stories helped him and some actually harmed him. We'll hear how he became an author, and about the emotional toll it took to write “Louder Than Hunger.”***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In John's reading challenge, Story Within a Story, he wants us to read the actual books found in the pages of his book, “This is a Story.”You can find his list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com.Today's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Amanda Maslanka, a 26-year veteran in education and an elementary school librarian in South Houston. A singer-songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter, award-winning children's writer, and actor, Shel Silverstein grew up in Chicago. He started out as a cartoonist before turning to children's books. Silverstein is the author and illustrator of numerous books, including The Giving Tree (1964), Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974), A Light in the Attic (1981), and Falling Up (1996). His books have been commended for their appeal to both adults and children.Silverstein's poems are often darkly humorous, irreverent, and populated with invented characters, such as the “Bloath” in Where the Sidewalk Ends, who dwells “[i]n the undergrowth” and “feeds upon poets and tea.” Silverstein's poems and stories are accompanied by his simple yet energetic pen-and-ink illustrations. The Giving Tree, a fable about a lifelong relationship between a boy and a tree, has become a classic in the canon of children's literature and has sold over five million copies.-bio via Poetry Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Have you ever wondered about the labyrinthine world of celebrity drama? This episode promises to rattle your perceptions as we shed light on the mystery surrounding Britney Spears' memoir, 'The Woman and Me.' We discuss the potential controversies her memoir might unleash about her relationship with Justin Timberlake and the allegations that have been swirling around for years. Next, we challenge your understanding of global affairs, with an unfiltered look into the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip. We dissect the media's one-sided narratives, examine the harrowing impact of the Israeli government's actions on Gaza's population, and discuss the surge in anti-Semitic hate crimes. This isn't an easy conversation, but it's a necessary one, and we're committed to deepening our understanding together. But it's not all controversy and conflict. We also delight in sharing our thoughts on a 2020 Gelso Rosso red wine, its unique notes, and how it complements a zesty pasta dish. We also dive into our latest entertainment obsessions, from Norm Macdonald's comedy to the anime Demon Slayer and the campy slasher movie, 'Totally Killer.' Then there's Julia Fox's revealing memoir, 'Down the Drain', and some darkly humorous poetry from Shel Silverstein's, 'Where the Sidewalk Ends'. So pour yourself a glass of your favorite vino and seize the opportunity for an engaging and enlightening conversation.
Shel Silverstein's poems have long been some of my very favorite, and today I want to expound on my thoughts surrounding the popular one titled, "The Giving Tree." The story perpetuates the idea that women should give, and give, and give, expecting nothing in return. And so we see that cycle repeat from one generation to another, deeply affecting meaningful relationships. I don't want to be a stump of a woman at the end of my life, and I don't want that for you, either. I hope this bite-sized episode encourages you to grow deep roots, and nurture strong branches, while learning some small ways you can start working towards that right away. This very book-heavy episode, the girls/women discuss the relevance of Banned Books Week since no one really reads and libraries are essentially homeless masturbation zones. Meghan shares her distaste for the morally-dubious lessons of The Giving Tree (the Shel Silverstein classic), but Sarah defends it as a necessary parenthood redpill. Finally, they discuss a problematic listener comment about single parenthood and the black community. Want to get early and bonus episodes? Upgrade your subscription.HOUSEKEEPING
