#9 Robbie Corbett - Earn As You Learn

My guest today is none other than Robbie Corbett! Robbie Corbett is a co-owner of the World Freerunning Parkour Federation (WFPF) and currently overseeing three divisions: Certifications, Competitions & Equipment. Robbie is one of the most driven and energetic individuals in the world of parkour and while we go out training, he is relentlessly building the infrastructure and the behind the scenes work that needs to be done. It's a thankless job and he does it tenaciously. This conversation was particularly exciting for me, because it embodies the title of this podcast, Parkour and More, as it blends the two careers that have the most impact on my life. Parkour and the world of insurance. Robbie has been tirelessly developing a new insurance product from the ground up, which is not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination and has been approved for market. I'll let Robbie explain it in depth, but the opportunities this provides to parkour coaches and educators is unparalleled and empowers those with an entrepreneurial drive. A lot has been said about WFPF and its impact on the world of Parkour. One thing that is objectively true, they keep elevating and progressing the conversation forward. So with out further ado, I invite you, to jump into the mind of Robbie Corbett. *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. #8 Victor Bevine - The World Of Obstacles

BREAKING NEWS: The International Parkour Federation (IPF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with WorldOCR (Obstacle Course Racing) with the intent to form an umbrella organization known as World Obstacle. This organization would combine the efforts of four sports/disciplines: Parkour, Obstacle Course Racing, Ninja Warrior & Adventure Racing. All of which will retain their fully autonomy and independent governance. My guest today is Victor Bevine... Victor is the Co-Founder & CEO of the World Freerunning Parkour Federation (WFPF) and currently the Acting President of the International Parkour Federation (IPF). He is an award-winning audiobook narrator and published author based out of New York City. IPF has been in a chess match with the FIG (International Federation of Gymnastics) since 2014 fighting for the autonomy of Parkour as a sport. Fighting for this autonomy ultimately allows the grass-roots organization that have been fostering and developing the global parkour community and cultures over the years maintain their independence and influence rather than handing their efforts over to another entity. It appears that FIG has also been attempting to appropriate Obstacle Course Racing as well. With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) looking for more collaboration among its members and either creating or combining current sports organizations into new multi-sport federations and efforts, both the IPF and WorldOCR are interested in pre-emptively resolving this future roadblock and joining efforts now to fight off FIG together by combining resources and leverage. IPF, since 2014, has helped almost 50 countries achieve National Independence, autonomy for Parkour and communication with their sports councils. WorldOCR, founded in 2015, has 80 federations and organizations that make up its base. Ultimately, this move has the potential to be the "checkmate" in the game of chess with FIG and truly up level the sports that share a common root and apparatus: The Obstacle With all of this said, There is always a lot of nuance with big decisions like these and I would encourage you enjoy the next hour with an open mind and start to witness the creative solutions this new partnership brings to the table. So with out further ado, I invite you, to jump into the mind of Victor Bevine. *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. Hey Folks Welcome back to Parkour & More. For today's episode I wanted to do something special for myself, a birthday present if you will. On July 14th, 2020 I turned 30 years old and at the time of this recording I am 3 months away from becoming a first time father to a baby boy. Needless to say it's a big year for me and the general climate of the US has provided me with a lot of spare time to meditate and reflect. I welcome you to join me as I share 30 reflections from my 30 revolutions around the sun. These reflections will contain lessons that I have learned, observations that have rang true for me thus far, and ideas that have provided me with countless hours of fun thought experiments. Some of these are original thoughts while others are quotes that have sent me down paths of unrelenting meditation. Never the less, I hope this episode provides value to you. It certainly has been a fun project to deep dive into myself and organize my thoughts. So without further ado, I invite you to jump into the mind of…well, me… Justin Sheaffer *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. #6 Victor Bevine - Parkour's Autonomy: The Chess Match with FIG

Victor Bevine is the Co-Founder & CEO of the World Freerunning Parkour Federation (WFPF) and currently the Acting President of the International Parkour Federation (IPF). He is an award-winning audiobook narrator and published author based out of New York City. IPF has been in a chess match with the FIG since 2014 fighting for the autonomy of Parkour as a sport. Fighting for this autonomy ultimately allows the grass-roots organization that have been fostering and developing the global parkour community and cultures over the years maintain their independence and influence rather than handing their efforts over to another entity. FIG certainly could have brought and still might bring a version of Sport Parkour to the world stage, certainly through world championships and the Olympic Games which they have over a hundred years of experience in doing so. However, around 2017 the Parkour Community fought FIGs efforts as loud as possible, but we truly didn't have the infrastructure in place to provide a compelling alternative. Luckily IPF began the process in 2014 to create roadblocks for FIG and mitigate the risk of leaving them uncontested. Especially in the eyes of the International Olympic Committee. IPF has bought us more time and since 2014 has helped almost 50 countries achieve National Independence and autonomy for Parkour and communication with their sports councils. They hosted their first International Congress virtually in June 2020 amidst our global pandemic with over 50 countries represented and have made some powerful allies around the world helping them in their efforts against FIG. With all of this said, I find it pertinent to clarify that I hold no current role or day to day function for IPF, so my opinions and passions you will hear me share are those of my own experiences and observations. So with out further ado, I invite you, to jump into the mind of Victor Bevine. *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. #5 Christopher Hollingsworth - Stop "Shoulding" All Over Yourself

My guest today is my brother from another mother, Christopher Hollingsworth. Chris has contributed a tremendous amount of himself to parkour over the years. A top level athlete and arguably one of the most knowledgeable coaches the sport has, not only in the physical realm, but his ability to tap into his students' mental and emotional barriers and guide them through breakthroughs. He is currently a program manager and apprentice seminar leader for Landmark Worldwide based out of Seattle, Washington. In this discussion Chris and I talk about subconscious mentality, the manifestation of opportunity and the discipline behind connection. We certainly didn't have enough time to unpack all of the crucial reframing and un-learning required to truly discover these for one-self, but we did demonstrate that these conversations can and are happening and hopefully provide you new perspectives and distinctions to play with in your personal thought experiments, meditations and reflections. So...Without Further Ado, I invite you to jump into the mind of Christopher Hollingsworth *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. Noah is one of my life-long friends, parkour enthusiast, professional videographer and Founder & CEO of Snowman Films based out of Denver Colorado. Noah and I have pursued a wide variety of Parkour related businesses, products and services over the years and ultimately both had to take a large step back to reassess and collect our thoughts on the question, “Is it possible to have a career in Parkour?” In this day and age the answer is undoubtedly yes, but will that career be a successful one, will it stand the test of time and will it provide a benefit to society at large? #3 Monologue - What is Parkour?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2020 13:21

In my almost 15 years of practicing parkour I have noticed a few things about public perception. 1) The average person has become wildly more familiar with the term “Parkour.” 2) The conversation around what parkour actually is has barely evolved within the main stream... It is so rare that a bystander, relative or friend actually bring a fresh perspective or even refreshing conversation around what it is that I and so many others are doing. Their feedback when witnessing or asked by another is something along the lines of “Oh, he does Parkour.” Which generally receives an “Oh. That’s cool.” End of discussion. as you can see there is very little depth to the interaction and leaves the impression that Parkour has been more widely accepted as visual spectacle, a stunt, or a meme. It has been consumed and digested through a screen versus having any real, physical or tangible experiences in the average person's reality. but honestly, I don’t blame them. Because we as the Parkour community actually owe them all a massive apology. We have done a fantastic job of debating one another and telling the masses what parkour ISN’T, and a very poor job of what Parkour is...Until now... *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/justinsheaffer/support

#1 Marlon Johnson - Willing to be Wrong

Hey Folks! Your listening to Parkour & More and I’m your host Justin Sheaffer Our guest today is none other than Marlon Johnson. Marlon is a parkour practitioner, director at Camp Woodward and a real estate investor based out of New York. He is a very dear friend and one of the most introspective people I have the honor of knowing. At the time of this recording the country is in its third month of lockdown due to Covid 19 with every state currently entering some phase of reopening. However, this week protests and marches in support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement have proven to be more powerful and pressing than the fear and uncertainty of Covid or the silence that has plagued American Society for far too long. Marlon and I sat down with one goal in mind. To demonstrate a conversation between two people who come from very different upbringings and ethnicities that are willing to have a vulnerable and nuanced exchange. You will notice that passions get high at times and both Marlon and I share a very deep respect for one another, this allows us to each have the space to fully articulate our points and riff on ideas that are just now occurring for us. Ultimately, I found our conversation to be very insightful and a refreshing break from the typical “loudness” experienced in the social media eco chambers. At times the conversation might seem one-sided, but I assure you it was designed this way. As a white male I recognize that it is my responsibility to learn from, advocate for and support our black brothers and sisters during this time and I thank Marlon for allowing that space, providing additional perspective and his overall optimism for our country and our future. So with out further ado I invite you to jump into the mind of Marlon Johnson. *Please subscribe to Parkour & More anywhere you enjoy listening to podcasts, and feel free to leave us a rating and review in Apple Podcasts.
