Matt Davies - NY Newsday The two biggest stories in our opening list are Trump's campaign of intimidating the media, which seems to be working … and the apparent ascension of the world's richest man to the unelected position of Acting President-elect. Also as we recorded on Friday morning, we have: Congress in chaos as the Musk-Johnson budget bill dies a quick death, opening the door to Mike Johnson becoming the latest House Speaker to get ousted Tin-hat conspiracy theories fanning the flames in New Jersey, Trump trolls our neighbors to the north, and flips the bird to the Bahamas by naming Herschel Walker as the U.S. ambassador. The state House emulated the chaos of the U.S. House with the Speaker unable to even assemble a quorum for the last day of session, raising questions about Speaker Joe Tate's upcoming campaign for Detroit mayor The race for Michigan Democratic Party chair may over before it starts as Governor Whitmer endorses longtime ally Curtis Hertel Jr. In a rare moment of positive news, 120 Democrats in Congress are calling on President BIden to certify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution – an amendment that originated with Michigan's glass-ceiling breaking Congresswoman Martha Griffiths. A majority of Americans oppose Trump's proposals to test democracy's limits Pretending he has an electoral mandate, Trump keeps making stuff up Appeals court removes prosecutor Fani Willis from Georgia election case against Trump Trump's transition is happening over private emails. Federal officials are nervous THIS WEEK'S GUEST Even in presidential elections, 2 in 5 American citizens choose to sit things out. It's even worse in non-presidential election years. A veteran political consultant believes we can and should improve those numbers by embracing technology. In his book “Vote with Your Phone,” Bradley Tusk believes that allowing Americans to vote in elections from their phones would dramatically increase turnout, reduce extremism, and fix our broken politics. Beyond that, mobile voting will break down barriers that have made in-person and even mail voting inaccessible for countless Americans — younger voters, tribal voters, military voters, voters with disabilities, and many others. Tusk is currently the Managing Partner and Co-founder of Tusk Venture Partners, the world's first venture capital fund that invests solely in early stage startups in highly regulated industries, and the founder of political consulting firm Tusk Strategies. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School. Earlier in his career, Bradley served as campaign manager for Mike Bloomberg's 2009 mayoral race, as Deputy Governor of Illinois, overseeing the state's budget, operations, legislation, policy and communications, as communications director for Senator Chuck Schumer, and as Uber's first political advisor. =========================== This episode is sponsored in part by EPIC ▪ MRA, a full service survey research firm with expertise in • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management Mike Luckovich - Atlanta Constitution Journal

As bodies were burning from this massacre at the Mystic River in Massachusetts in 1637, pious settlers gave thanks to God for the victory- and even identified that the bodies burning were a “sweet-smelling savor in the nostrils of God.” Is this really the Land of the Free? Does freedom for some depend on violence against others? Rev Dr. Lee Butler, President of Iliff School of Theology, shares his perspective on the violent history at the founding of the U.S. that continues to influence how we relate to one another today. Amanda and Rev. Dr. Lee Butler discuss the contradictions between the U.S. ideals of freedom and the country's violent history of slavery, lynching, and cruel massacres. In this episode, this duo argues that acknowledging this history is crucial for understanding the ongoing legacies of colonization and systemic inequality, and the importance of redefining this idea of freedom for future generations to come. https://religionnews.com/complexified GUEST: Born in Central Pennsylvania, the Rev. USDA forecasts net farm income, a broad measure of profits, to plunge $39.8 billion, or 25.5%, to $116.1 billion in 2024. This follows a forecasted decrease of $29.7 billion, or 16%, from 2022 to $155.9 billion in 2023. If the estimate holds, farmers face the largest income drop since 2006 and back-to-back years of financial pain. % "With this expected decline, net farm income in 2024 would be 1.7 percent below its 20-year average (2003–22) of $118.2 billion and 40.9 percent below the record high in 2022 in inflation-adjusted dollars," USDA wrote in the report. Simultaneously, farmers are witnessing a rapid decline in their leading role in the global grain market. Decades of corn export dominance were shredded by Brazil last year. Bidenomics is failing blue-collar workers who put food on America's table. He has now been forced to throw himself at the mercy of the Illinois Supreme Court. The move marks the next step as Smollett works to exhaust all his appeal options after a jury in 2021 convicted him on five of six counts of disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail, 30 months of probation and $130,160 in restitution. Smollett's attorneys filed the petition to the high court on Monday, arguing that the questions raised by the case have the “potential for wide-reaching implications” across Illinois. The court has the discretion to decide whether to take the case, or leave the appellate court's decision in effect. If the President is removed from office, dies, or resigns, the Vice President assumes the position. Before the Amendment's ratification, a vacant Vice Presidential seat would remain unfilled until the next election. Section 2 changed this rule, stating that the President nominates a replacement Vice President to fill the position.Section 3 of the Amendment states that the President must formally notify the Speaker of the House and President pro tempore of the Senate, who are respectively second and third in line for the presidency after the Vice President, if they are temporarily unable to uphold the powers and duties of the President. The Vice President then becomes Acting President until the President issues a formal notice of their return to capacity. Finally, Section 4 establishes the procedure for naming an Acting President when the President is deemed unable to perform their Constitutional duties but refuses to leave office. First, the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet determine the competency of the President. If the President is ruled incompetent, the Vice President immediately takes charge. The President can then declare themself able, and the Vice President and Cabinet have four days to agree or disagree. If the group agrees, the President resumes their duties. Otherwise, the Vice President keeps office, and Congress votes on the President's ability. A two-thirds majority vote is needed to remove the President from office and replace them with the Vice President.https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12541115/Merrick-Garland-says-dont-know-asked-FBI-informants-January-6-former-assistant-directors-bombshell-claim-bureau-MULTIPLE-confidential-sources-involved-Capitol-Riot.htmlhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12541115/Merrick-Garland-says-dont-know-asked-FBI-informants-January-6-former-assistant-directors-bombshell-claim-bureau-MULTIPLE-confidential-sources-involved-Capitol-Riot.htmlThe 5th Amendment? The right to indictment by the grand jury before any criminal charges for felonious crimesA prohibition on double jeopardyA right against forced self-incriminationA guarantee that all criminal defendants have a fair trial, and A guarantee that the government cannot seize private property without making a due compensation at the market value of the property. To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race. - Calvin CoolidgeThe Constitution that I interpret and apply is not living, but dead, or as I prefer to call it, enduring. Our guest is The Right Honourable Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada. Kim is a powerhouse whose life has been a life of firsts: from the age of 16 when she became the first female student body president at Prince of Wales Secondary School, to the first female president for her freshman class at University of British Columbia, to holding elected office at all three levels of Canadian government and then becoming Canada's first (and only) female Prime Minister in 1993. Clearly, Kim has spent much of her life breaking barriers for women. She was the first woman to serve as Canada's Minister of Justice and Minister of National Defence, as well as the first woman to serve as Minister of Defence of a NATO member country. Ms. Campbell served as the Canadian Consul General in Los Angeles, taught at the Harvard Kennedy School and is a member of the International Women's Forum, a global organization of women of significant and diverse achievement, and served as its global president (2003-2005). She was inducted into the IWF Hall of Fame in 2008. Kim Campbell is also a founding member of the Club de Madrid, now the largest international forum of former heads of government and state who work to promote democratic values. After serving as Acting President (2002), Secretary General (2004-2006), Vice President and a member of the Board (2007- 2011), she returned to the Board in 2019. Among her involvement in international organizations focused on democracy and security issues, Kim Campbell chaired the Steering Committee for the World Movement for Democracy in Washington, D.C. from 2008-2015, and is a Trustee of the International Center for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King's College, London. Ms. Campbell became an international leader of leaders as Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders (1999-2003) and is currently a member and Chair Emerita. The Council's membership is composed of women who hold, or have held, the office of President or Prime Minister. Ms. Campbell's most notable achievement in recent years has been the design and launch of a ground-breaking leadership program for undergraduates at the University of Alberta: The Peter Lougheed Leadership College. She served as its Founding Principal from 2014-2018. In 2016 Kim Campbell was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to serve as Chairperson of the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments, a role she has reprised three times since, most recently in spring 2021. In 2021, Ms. Campbell joined the board of Toronto-based Glen Gould Foundation (glengould.ca) and the advisory board of The Vancouver Anti-Corruption Institute. VACI is a project of The International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy (ICCLR), which was created during Ms. Campbell's tenure as Minister of Justice. Also in 2021, Ms. Campbell accepted an invitation to become a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of arts, manufactures and commerce (thersa.org), which was founded in 1754 in England. Additionally, Ms. Campbell received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the International Leadership Association (ILA), for her significant contributions to the understanding and practice of effective leadership which has had an exceptional impact internationally. Kim Campbell lives with her husband - pianist, actor, playwright, composer and producer Hershey Felder - in Florence, Italy. Join us as Kim Campbell speaks candidly on issues related to leadership, international politics, democratization, climate change, gender, Canadian/American relations and much more.
