This wee we are fortunate enough to have Adrian "Boz" Bozman, Director of the CrossFit Games on the podcast. Boz is fresh off programming his first Games ever. If you are only familiar with Boz as the Games head judge, then you are about to learn that he is an incredibly articulate, intelligent, and kind human, who put a lot of intentional thought behind this years Games. We discussed why certain movements were chosen for the 2022 Games, favorite moments for Boz, and lessons learned this year. It became apparent that Boz and Power Monkey have essentially identical philosophies on movement practice, this conversation turned toward how this philosophy impacted his decisions when programming the various events. There are even some nuggets in there about where the programming may go in the future, if you're willing to "read between the lines". We hope you enjoy this episode, we certainly did. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Dr. Stacie Barber, a Physical Therapist and founder of "The Physio Fix" in Phoenix, Arizona. We covered all things physical therapy from her background to her passion for helping people move better and feel better. We talked about the key foundational principles of mobility work as a tool for injury prevention and movement prep. Stacie talked about the key exercises that should be included in a weekly routine, in order to optimize joint function and longevity. We talked about how and when to apply ice, cold therapy, and compression to facilitate recovery. Stacie talked about the use of Olympic lifting as an anti-aging tool, and also the future of the mobility industry.  Dr. Stacie Barber received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Illinois State University in 2011 where she was an NCAA student-athlete, earning several honors in the sport of gymnastics. After undergrad, Stacie went on to become a strength and performance coach, furthering her knowledge of exercise prescription and implementation. With a special interest in sports rehab/prehab, she later pursued her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree which she obtained from Duke University in 2015. By 2017, Dr. Stacie then founded “The Physio Fix”. As a former collegiate gymnast and current Olympic Weightlifter, Dr. Stacie aims to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and sports performance. She has had her fair share of orthopedic injuries/surgeries and understands how detrimental an injury can be for an athlete at any level. She spends a lot of time with patients analyzing their movement patterns, identifying deficits, and improving body mechanics to not only fix the current problem but also prevent future compensations and degeneration. Dr. Stacie enjoys working with the entire spectrum of patients of all ages who participate in a wide range of sports. To assist people to reach their maximum potential, she incorporates strength training, mobility training, and sports performance enhancement into all her treatment plans. In her spare time, Dr. Stacie enjoys quality time at home with her husband and their five dogs who regularly provide “patient support” at her facility. She has competed in Gymnastics, Powerlifting, and Bodybuilding, and is currently pursuing her passion for Olympic Weightlifting. Find out more about Dr. Stacie Barber on her website at www.thephysiofix.com and on Instagram at @thephysiofix. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

Over the past five years, sexual abuse scandals in sports have continuously been in the news. Whether swimming, tae kwon do, or most famously gymnastics, the variety of sports that have had such scandals point to a very uncomfortable truth that sports has inherent child protection issues, and that these unique vulnerabilities require unique prevention strategies to keep youth athletes safe. Courtney Kiehl, former elite gymnast, abuse survivor, and now an attorney and advocate for child victims and adult survivors of child sexual abuse, joined us to discuss what makes youth athletes so vulnerable, and how we can help. What coaching strategies create toxic cultures, which discourage kids from speaking up about concerns? How does the lack of accountability at the club level allow offenders to move location and keep right on coaching? How does the weight of adult expectations—coaches, parents, and, yes, us, the viewers—make it so very difficult for kids to disclose even the most harrowing abuse? And where is there reason for hope and action to create a future for elite sport, and indeed all sport, that is healthy and safe?  Take a listen.Topics in this episode:Origin story (1:46)What good coaching looks like (6:53)What makes athletes vulnerable (12:52)Who regulates sports (19:20)The bystander problem (28:17)What all athletes need (32:34)Parenting advice and the weight of expectations (33:52)Links:Courtney Kiehl, Esq., is an attorney at Paul Mones PC in California, a legal firm that specializes in representing victims of child sexual abuse. Of all the motivational buzzwords out there, the term ‘character' is thrown around a lot. Hiring managers looking for people with ‘high character,' managers say that random exercises ‘build character,' so on and so forth. But what does character actually look like? What does it mean? Coach Melissa Kutcher knows the importance of character. It's how she led the University of Denver Women's Gymnastics team to 22 consecutive NCAA finals appearances, 2 NCAA individual championships, the 2021 Big 12 Championship, and 5 team NCAA appearances. Since her appointment to head coach at University of Denver's Women's Gymnastics in 1998 she's been awarded the 2019 National Coach of the Year Award, a 2x Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, 2002s WGC's Coach of the Year, and a 6x recipient of the North Central Region Coach of the Year. Every year Coach Kutcher is tasked with creating a high performing team while constantly letting go of one batch of her star athletes, while also welcoming a brand new class of student athletes. She gets the importance of building a strong culture, and the importance of recruiting people who can develop character. In a time where the members of your workforce can fluctuate more rapidly than ever, knowing how to develop a winning culture amongst the ups and downs of recruiting and losing people is an invaluable skill, one that Coach Kutcher has mastered during her tenure at University of Denver. This is another episode you won't want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

In this episode of the Out of the Clouds podcast, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews former Commonwealth British gymnast, dancer, choreographer, entrepreneur and now certified breath coach Aicha McKenzie (@AichaMcKenzie). Aicha is the CEO and founder of the AMCK Group, which she launched in 2005 with AMCK Dance - an award-winning international premium dance agency with the most elite selection of dancers, choreographers, and creative directors - as well AMCK Models in 2008, London's only exclusively male model agency, counting over 150 male models on its books, shooting campaigns for Prada, Gucci, Burberry, among many others. Aicha has made many TV appearances, appearing as a judge on reality dance shows in the UK and the US. Aicha has also been responsible for choreographing 300 Olympic dancers during the London 2012 Olympic Games.Aicha and Anne met on a very special project with burlesque cabaret dancer Dita Von Teese, a filmed performance that was to be turned into a hologram, the keystone of the famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin's 20th anniversary retrospective at the London Design Museum. Over the course of this very personal interview, Aicha shares her amazing story, or her ‘many lives' as she refers to it: from her first life as the first Black gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, supported by her amazing mother, to becoming a commercial dancer and working as a choreographer with top artists, to her latest pursuit launching, running, and expanding an award-winning AMCK Group, which consists of four entities, AMCK Dance, AMCK Models, AMCK Fit and BreatheByAMCK.The two of them move to talking about the stress of managing it all, Aicha's health scares, and how movement has been a through line for her, even in difficult times. The conversation moves to managing burnout, launching a wellness arm with AMCKFit, learning to let things move through and the value in slowing down. Anne and Aicha also discuss the power and purpose of our breath. The certified breath coach shares this wisdom: “Breath is the whole story: balance, reset, energise, activate, transform, heal, exhale” and said that she ‘loves working with the breath because it's allowing that pause to exist, allowing yourself to literally take a breath.'Having helped so many talented individuals at some point in their careers, the mother and CEO says that her work in its entirety is about the connection to being oneself, not being someone else or following another's path.A very powerful, moving and inspirational interview with an incredible woman.
