We kick off this Spotlight at the Western States 100, where much of the buzz centered on David Roche's DNF. Roche, a polarizing figure who promised to “science the shit” out of the race, faced unfair criticism both before and after the race, and Ross reflects on how the scientific process often works best when the "hypothesis" fails, and why confronting failed hypotheses to explain under-performance is more beneficial than riding a wave of success .The "science the shit out of it" theme continues with Nike's hyped attempt to help Faith Kipyegon break the 4-minute mile. It didn't just fall short—it missed by a long shot, with Kipyegon never really giving the barrier a scare with a pacing strategy that reveals they all knew it was not truly feasible. Ross and Gareth unpack the science, pseudoscience and "hacks" behind the effort, with honorable mentions for the obviously flawed claims by scientists about drafting benefits, and criticism of many media who parroted hype points without critical thought. We wonder what the athlete who could break 4 looks like, and postulate that they probably don't exist. Yet. From ultra to ultra-short, we shift to the 100m, where Kishane Thompson clocked a blistering 9.75s—the fastest in a decade, leading Gareth to wonder why sprinting seems to have plateaued post-Bolt?In Center Stage (37:14), legal expert Matt Kemp joins us to dissect a recent rugby case where a player successfully sued an opponent for causing a spinal injury with a reckless off-the-ball collision. Could this open the door to more civil claims in contact sports? Matt explains the legal standards around recklessness and duty of care. Ross Replies (1:15:23) to Discourse member Paul on the purpose of sports science and what "truth" means when studies can't be replicated? And in Listener Lens (1:24:15), we explore ATP's role in exercise, wonder whether you can ever “run out” of it, and how the purpose of metabolism is to keep it in good supply. And Finally (1:31:17), we invite you all to join our Tour de France Fantasy League, and see if you can top Gareth and Ross' picks in our two leagues!Join DiscourseJoin the Discourse community, to hang out with the racers, analysts, legal experts, coaches and experts, by making a small monthly pledge at PatreonLinksAnalysis of the 100m event that inspired our 100m chatGymnastic medalists are getting olderReport on the decision ruling in favour of a player injured by opponentMatt, our new legal expert, is a partner at Becker Kemp Solicitors & AttorneysRoss' reply to Tony on the ATP depletion question - members onlyTDF FANTASY LEAGUE - play one of our two leagues Hosted on Acast. The history of the Brazilian gymnastics program, from its humble beginnings in the 1970s to Olympic glory in 2024 This week's episode is a commission from our Olympic Fantasy Gymnastics winner, Liam, who wants us to discuss the history of Brazilian gymnastics. From trailblazers like Daiane dos Santos and Daniele Hypolito who put Brazilian gymnastics on the map, to the current stars, Flavia Saraiva and Rebeca Andrade. GymCastic LIVE in CHICAGO: Tickets on sale now Get Tickets Setting the Scene How the Brazilian teams of recent years embody the energy of badass, confident adult women who do gymnastics as a team sport Why we think Marta Karolyi would probably hate the 2024 Brazilian Olympic team (in the most complimentary way possible) The early days of Brazilian Gymnastics When did Brazil send its first team to Worlds? Why we need a Brazilian gymnastics shrine dedicated to Claudia Costa How did the program start gaining momentum during the 1980s? The tumultuous 1990s: from finishing dead last at 1991 Worlds, to defeating the United States at the 1997 Pan Am Championships, what was going on in these years? The Pioneers of Career Longevity Nearly every Brazilian gymnast who has ever won a World or Olympic medal has continued with the sport past age 25. What does this tell us about the program's emphasis on career longevity? What do Jade Barbosa and Oksana Chusovitina have in common? Hint: it's more than just being a great vaulter The First Stars of Brazilian Gymnastics Daniele Hypolito wins Brazil's first-ever World medal at 2001 Worlds and finishes fourth all-around How the success of 2003 Worlds put Brazil on the gymnastics map thanks to greats like Daiane dos Santos and Lais Souza Innovative skills throughout the years from Dos Santos's piked double-arabian to Oliveira's double-arabian pike half-out The Birth of a Powerhouse Brazil starts bringing foreign coaches in: Oleg Ostapenko, Iryna Illyashenko, how did this contribute to Brazil's rise? Jade Barbosa's incredible senior debut at 2007 Worlds, winning Brazil's first-ever all-around medal In 2008, the powerhouse team of Jade Barbosa, Ana Cláudia Silva, Ethiene Franco, Laís Souza, Daniele Hypólito, and Daiane dos Santos helped Brazil qualify to the Olympic team finals for the first time EVERRR Controversies and DRAAMMAA Did you know Daiane dos Santos had a 5-month ban in 2009-2010 for diuretic usage following a surgery? Jade Barbosa was taken out of the London Olympics because of a *checks notes* apparel sponsorship conundrum? Gymnastics sabotage??!! That time someone cut the power at Brazilian Nationals Struggling Towards the Rio Olympics Era (2012-2015) Things were looking rough heading into the Rio quad No World or Olympic all-around finalists in 2012, 2013, 2014 Brazil did not automatically qualify a team to the Rio Olympics The emergence of Rebeca Andrade, Flavia Saraiva, and Lorrane Oliveira and how their success reshaped the program The Rio Olympic Games (2016) What were the expectations for this team heading into a home Olympic Games? Could Brazil have medalled as a team here? What were the standout performances? Event finals? The Perseverance Era (2017-2020) Rebeca Andrade has not one, but two more ACL tears (2017, 2019) No World or Olympic medals between Barbosa's 2010 vault and Andrade's 2021 Tokyo performance The Age of Brazil (2021-present) Rebeca Andrade's amazing comeback performance at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, taking all-around silver and vault gold 2021 Kitakyushu Worlds: Rebeca's strategy to protect her body and play the long game Andrade wins her first World vault title 2022 Liverpool Worlds: Andrade takes home vault gold, floor bronze, and a fourth-place team placement 2023 Antwerp Worlds: The Brazilian team takes home SIX medals Team silver, Andrade all-around silver, vault gold, beam bronze, floor silver and bronze The Paris Olympic Games Brazil's historic team final performance, Andrade's floor gold, all-around silver, and vault silver What Are the Next Steps for Brazil? Building depth Remember the cautionary tales of the Romanian and Australian programs: don't be too reliant upon veterans to come and save the day; you need to invest in the next generation! Kristin Louise Duncombe grew up traveling the world as the daughter of a U.S. State Department foreign service officer. But Kristin's childhood and those of at least six other girls were shattered when they crossed paths with an American diplomat in Africa who sexually abused them. After one of the girls came forward with her story, the State Department swiftly sent him back to Washington, but officials declined to refer the case for investigation or prosecution. Kristin kept the secret for decades until she heard about the cover-up of sexual abuse by U.S. Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. Kristin joins me to discuss what happened in Africa, the investigation and cover-up, better ways to handle childhood sexual abuse and why she feels it is important for us, as a society, to have these conversations. To read Kristin's book about the abuse and coverup, Object: A Memoir:https://www.kristinduncombe.com/object-a-memoir/Contact me at silverliningshandbookpod@gmail.comCheck out the Silver Linings Handbook website at:https://silverliningshandbook.com/Check out our Patreon to support the show at:https://www.patreon.com/thesilverliningshandbookJoin our Facebook Group at:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1361159947820623Visit the Silver Linings Handbook store to support the podcast at:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-silver-linings-handbook-podcast-storeVisit The True Crime Times Substack at:https://truecrimemessenger.substack.comThe Silver Linings Handbook podcast is a part of the ART19 network. From tariffs on foreign goods to scaling back on US military and humanitarian aid abroad, it's clear that Trump is intent on moving the country in a more protectionist direction. But what does that look like for pop culture? Think: Kendrick's “Not Like Us” as an anthem for our time, versus Drake collaborating with lesser-known grime and Afro-house producers during the Obama years.Critic Jaime Brooks — who you may also know for her work in musical projects like Elite Gymnastics and Default Genders — recently wrote an epic essay exploring the geopolitics of music and entertainment in 2025. The piece is called “Notes on the Canzukian Schism,” and it's an eye-opening look at the ways the European social welfare system, US military policy, and libertarian free market evangelism have shaped our experiences as both consumers and producers of pop culture over the past century.Jaime joins us to discuss how her Canadian upbringing — much like Marshall McLuhan's and Drake's — gave her a distinct perspective on media and culture in the Anglosphere. She takes us through the history of radio in the UK and US, and how it set the stage for both the genesis of Western pop music and the perennial question of whether art should be funded by markets or the state. We also talk about how the “poptimism vs. rockism” debate overlooks the material realities of the music industry, how being online and being literate have become two entirely separate things, and why community radio may be the last viable path forward for culture.Want to continue the conversation? What do Crocs, coaching, and quitting drinking have in common? More than you'd think...In episode 204 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick Fox, a life and sober coach for men, explores how the seemingly small stuff, like your opinion on someone's shoes, can reveal the deeper belief systems driving your habits, including your relationship with alcohol.Using everyday examples and coaching insights, Patrick unpacks how our brains use beliefs as shortcuts to interpret the world and how those beliefs often go unquestioned. From identity-level thoughts like “I'm just a guy who likes a drink” to fear-based assumptions like “If I stop drinking, I'll be miserable,” this episode invites listeners to pause, get curious, and realise: all beliefs are optional.Cool takeaways you can expect to hear:Why your beliefs, not alcohol, may be the real thing getting in your wayThe difference between equivalence, cause-and-effect, and identity beliefsHow your brain filters reality through deletion, distortion, and generalisationThe power of suspending beliefs rather than fighting themWhy questioning what you believe about alcohol is the first step toward real changeIf you're ready to take back control and feel more confident and self-assured in sobriety, this episode is a must-listen. Work with Patrick:Get 1-1 coaching, quit drinking and start showing up like the man you want to be in life.

Send us a textIn this solo episode, Janine dives deep into a foundational skill that separates good freelancers from great ones—communication. Drawing inspiration from nostalgic t-shirt slogans like “Gymnastics is life, the rest is all details,” Janine drives home the message that while writing skills get your foot in the door, clear, kind, and consistent communication is what keeps it open.Key Takeaways:Why Communication Matters More Than Writing Alone:Even exceptional writing won't make up for poor communication.Clients value transparency and ease of working with you over polished prose alone.Cold Outreach Best Practices:Be concise, respectful of time, and personalized.Include a simple and kind message that shows you've done your research.Discovery Calls Aren't Sales Pitches:They're conversations—come prepared, calm, and confident.Explain your process, timelines, deliverables, and revision policy clearly.Contracting for Clarity:Contracts protect both parties and prevent scope creep.Include revision terms, timelines (use business days), and a plan for changes.Follow-Up Strategy:Don't vanish after delivering work.Confirm receipt, ask for feedback, and clarify invoicing and next steps. The Core Message:Transparent, proactive communication builds trust and lasting client relationships.Long-term success is rooted in being kind, clear, and consistent. So remember, Savvy Scribes: communication is your superpower.Be clear.Be kind.Be consistent. That's what turns one-time projects into long-term relationships. That's what grows your business.Welcome to the Savvy Scribe Podcast, I'm so glad you're here! Thanks for listening to The SHIFT Show! Check out SHIFT's most popular courses here! https://courses.shiftmovementscience.com/Return-to-sport programming for gymnasts presents unique challenges that standard rehabilitation protocols often fail to address. How do you safely progress an injured gymnast from soft surfaces back to competition floors? When should you increase repetitions versus change surfaces? What's the optimal approach when working with different age groups? This episode unveils a comprehensive framework for creating customized gymnastics return protocols that methodically progress athletes through six weeks of carefully structured training. Rather than relying on guesswork, we break down how to adapt evidence-based principles from sports like baseball and running into gymnastics-specific programs that account for the sport's unique demands across different apparatus. We walk through a real-world case study of a Level 10 gymnast returning from a tibial plateau fracture, demonstrating how to systematically manage three critical variables: repetition count, surface type, and skill complexity. What does it take to become one of the nation’s top collegiate gymnasts? For Taylor Christopulos, the answer is found not just in routines and repetitions—but in mindset, resilience, and service. In this episode, Taylor, the 2025 Nissen-Emery Award winner (often called the “Heisman of Gymnastics”), shares his journey from Layton, Utah, to Nebraska’s NCAA team, his Olympic aspirations, and the unseen grind that defines success. He reflects on the importance of training the mind, pushing through the “bottom third” days, and using his platform to lift others. Highlight Moments: Why everyday decisions—like sleep, food, and mindset—are where championships are really won. The power of visualizing goals and staying grounded in purpose. Lessons from Nebraska’s team motto: “It Takes What It Takes.” This episode is a must-listen for any athlete striving to win more than just games. It’s about winning your hours, your mindset, and your impact. Principles discussed: Win the Hour, Be Resilient, Seek to Bless Not to Impress Listen now and be inspired to keep your Eyes Up and Do the Work.
