Today on the podcast we are continuing the popular series of the Q&A's, answering people's questions directly from the community.  In this episode, we're going to dive into injuries. I get a ton of questions from parents, coaches, medical providers, asking about different gymnastics injuries. I took five of the most popular questions that I had received that come up a lot from different people and tried to go through them and give my best advice. This particular episode is going to answer a lot of people's questions that they have about prehab and back injuries, shoulder injuries, and return to sport.   I ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:   Josh asks: Many of the boys that I coach are starting to get shoulder problems, two have been diagnosed with labral tears in their shoulder, what prehab exercises can I do to prevent this?    Amy asks: My daughter is 12 years old and is starting to complain about lower back pain when she tumbles or does beam back walkovers. She's also working a lot of yurchenko's and back handsprings on beam for her series and thinks that is where it started, what can we do about it?   Anonymous asked: I'm a medical provider working in the NCAA and Achilles injuries, including Achilles tears continued to be a huge problem for our team. Given your experiences and the new research projects, you guys have put out what should we be doing to help reduce this risk?   James asks: I'm a PT who is working with a lot of gymnasts, and all of them seem to struggle with knee or ankle-related pain during landings. What can we do as medical providers to help this out? I feel like as soon as the rest and are getting better, two months later, they are back in my office with the same type of pain.   ALSO…   Kara asks: What is your process for getting a gymnast safely back to training, there isn't any great literature on return to sport guidelines? And it's really overwhelming to do as an athletic trainer working with gymnasts.

Today on the podcast, we are launching a very exciting and very special series that I've wanted to do for a long time. A Q&A series answering people's questions directly from the community. We had a ton of questions and we put them all together and categorized them into four categories:   Strength and conditioning  Injuries Flexibility Culture   Each one of these podcasts is 30 minutes and I'll be answering five of the most common and biggest topic questions that all people in the gymnastics community have asked. So the first one today is all about strength conditioning, warm-ups, programming, doing some in-season versus offseason management, talking a lot about what exercises I like how to get gymnasts strong and powerful.     I ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:   Kim asks: I'm a huge fan of your strength and ideas and philosophy. But it seems to be more focused on optional gymnast who are in the gym 20 plus hours per week, how can I use it with my lower level gymnast who only trains six hours per week?    Sarah asks: How do I keep gymnasts motivated to do strength, conditioning, and basics? And how do I deal with complaints that it's too boring or it's too hard and not putting in any effort?   Arlene asks: What is your opinion on general gymnastic strength testing versus functional testing?   Em asks: How do you get stronger and more consistent tumbling in athletes?   ALSO…   Mark asks: How does your approach to season change in cardio change out of season versus pre-season versus in season?

Hello again, Everyone! In this week’s episode of the show, we talk about Sports in the In Death World! This was actually a really fun topic, even for someone like AJ who doesn’t sports! We start out discussing the Olympics in the future and what games would Eve and Roarke go see if they attended the games in 2020/2022/2024. For winter sports, we decided Eve and Roarke would stick to downhill Skiing, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, the Biathalon and those sorts of snow sports. But we don’t think they would be Ice Skating people or Curling, though we would love to see Eve watching curling and trying to figure out what the hell kind of sport is that? For summer sports, we generally agreed that any combat/fighting sports like boxing or karate would be a given, as well as Baseball, Basketball, and probably Rugby and Soccer. And of course any of the shooting sports or Archery. Swimming and Diving might also be on their itinerary. Jen thinks they would go see Gymnastics, and AJ thinks they would like Fencing. Roarke, being the perv that he is would convince Eve to watch Women’s Beach Volleyball. We then talk about Arena Ball vs Football, and have a little off topic discussion about head injuries in Football. Last we talk about Eve’s main sport, Baseball and the many baseball references in this series. As a bonus, AJ mentions an unconventional Summerset fancasting pick, and we’re making somewhat of a game out of it. See the attached photo and let us know who you think it might be! Hope you enjoy this Episode!

Today on the podcast, I'm extremely excited to bring you part two of my conversation with Medicine Redefined hosts Dr. Altamash and Dr. Darsh in which we have a fantastic discussion on the medical side of things.   Anyone who is a physical therapist, athletic trainer, medical doctor, you really need to hear this conversation because we have a great talk around how to have a better quality of care for athletes, and making sure that healthcare providers are happy with their jobs in the process.    We talked quite a bit about the communication between physicians and medical or rehab providers on the other side of surgery or rehab diagnostics, we also dive quite a bit into lower back pain and how to unpack that because sometimes it's a pretty frustrating and challenging thing to deal with.    Discussing return to sports and how we can foster a better pathway back into some of the more high-level stuff that a lot of people struggle with.    And we delve into how can we create a better overall medical system with better quality of care for patients and athletes to make sure that we're not just getting stuck in a rut of just going through the motions and feeling burnt out or frustrated.   That we're actually delivering really high quality of care.    A really great discussion here which I enjoyed talking with them about this, so do me a huge favor and head on over to their podcast after you listen to this because they have phenomenal discussions with great physicians and medical providers about some really hot topics that are going on.

This is part one of two podcasts. In this first part, we really dig into the gymnastic stuff they were curious about, such as gymnastics culture, Simone Biles Olympics, and what it means in terms of mental health and how that impacts other athletes.    We DISCUSS; why is puberty still not normalized in the sport of gymnastics?   My thoughts on Simone Biles Olympics and the impact it has had on our sport.   At what age should you start talking about mental health with athletes and what type of exercises to use to develop mental toughness.   Why the age of entry into the sport is not the biggest determinant of who does well, long term.   ALSO…   How is the culture of gymnastics, now improving.
