#150 Existuje vôbec pokrok bez zdokonalenia ľudského charakteru?

Technický a hospodársky pokrok neustále napredujú – no ľudia nie sú šťastnejší.

Parkour pioneer Sébastien Foucan can be credited for bringing Parkour to the masses. His seminal UK documentary, 'Jump London' (2003) - and its follow up, 'Jump Britain' (2005) - sparked a cultural phenomenon which would see youngsters take to the streets in wild, acrobatic, hair-raising abandon; running, climbing and leaping across their urban environment in scenes we still see on our streets today. For Sébastien, a movie career followed, with stand-out roles in action films including 'Casino Royale' (2006) and 'The Tournament' (2009). Those perceptive enough to see the inspiration behind his incredible physical abilities and derring-do would be quick to reference the work of Jackie Chan, whose stunt-filled films would prove to be one of the early catalysts for Sébastien and his friends to take to the streets of Paris, recreating what they saw in his movies. Today, Sébastien is an inspirational speaker and CEO of the Foucan Academy, teaching kids the art of movement and self-expression. His motto: "we play".On this episode - recorded live at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season - Sébastien explores his love of Hong Kong action cinema (especially the films of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee), his experiences working in Hollywood, current attitudes towards Parkour, and much more. This conversation was recorded after a screening of the 1978 Jackie Chan classic, 'Drunken Master', and is co-hosted by the 'Life of Action' author - and friend of the show - Mike Fury. A huge thank you to the crew at the Gulbenkian and the people of Canterbury who attended the show, and the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East for helping to organise the event.LINKSSébastien Foucan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sebastienfoucan/Sébastien Foucan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Seb-Foucan/100010605671158/ Sébastien Foucan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sebastien-foucan/ Sébastien Foucan website: https://www.sebastienfoucan.com/ Foucan Academy: https://foucanacademy.com/ 'Jump Britain' on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2TJurAP9l-Q?si=Abborgj9sRKdOKMN Chase scene from 'Casino Royale': https://youtu.be/iZxNbAwY_rk?si=9RvrgPTeoUWGT0GZ Sébastien Foucan on 'Ninja Warrior UK': https://youtu.be/o7YFOF1oeag?si=hjKZ23vx9DT-6S-k Mike Fury on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefury/Mike Fury's website: https://www.mikefury.net/'Drunken Master' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/DrunkenMasterKFMG'Drunken Master' trailer: https://youtu.be/WSu-9X8NF9k?si=BNVVYygZ7Ke_VdYpBuy 'Drunken Master' on Blu-ray: https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/drunken-master/Visit the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury: https://thegulbenkian.co.uk/Learn more about the BFI's Art of Action season: https://www.bfi.org.uk/art-actionA huge thank you to Independent Cinema Office (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/) and Film Hub South East (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/film-hub-south-east/) Hosted on Acast. In this episode I caught up with someone who I trained with many years ago. Kai used to train with me as a teenager and it's always interesting for me to think about where some of the kids I have coached over the years have ended up. That said, there was actually a sadder reason why I caught up with Kai for this podcast. Last year, he actually lost his life partner after she had a medical episode that caused her to collapse, fracture her skull and end up in the ICU. I didn't reach out to Kai when I found out about it, however a few weeks before we recorded this, the thought of Kai and Wendy popped into my mind and that was my sign to reach out to Kai and check in with him. We cover a huge range of topics on this from Parkour to Cryptocurrency, to starting your own businesses, not to mention his story with Wendy, dealing with grief, coping with loss and much more. There are some pretty heavy themes in this one, however I hope you all find something good in this episode.    Links: Stunner Boutique: https://www.instagram.com/stunnerboutique/ Saiyan Evolution: https://www.instagram.com/saiyanevolution/

Erik Childress has been traveling to Austin for over 20 years for the annual South by Southwest Film Festival. He is back to tell you all about 19 films that he saw this year. Among the films you can see soon are the return of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively to the world of simple favor. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega trying to survive the revenge of a unicorn and Nicolas Cage battles some territorial Australians. Hopefully audiences won't have to wait too long to see the solo directorial debut of Jay Duplass or the latest from Matt Johnson that pays homage to the world of Robert Zemeckis and Rosamund Pike & Matthew Rhys desperately try to get to the scene of their daughter's accident, Daisy Ridley has to dodge zombies and a pair of brothers take a leisurely stroll through San Francisco with their guitars in a single take. There are documentaries about Curtis Mayfield, Marc Maron, the horrors and fascism in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting and what to do when an A.I. Pioneer won't answer your questions. Erik reviews all that plus Michael Bay's parkour documentary in this recap of one of his favorite festivals.   0:00 – Intro 2:02 – Another Simple Favor 5:08 – Hallow Road 8:27 – Brother Verses Brother 11:19 – The Dutchman 14:03 – Death of a Unicorn 18:51 – American Sweatshop 22:18 – Uvalde Mom 25:22 – Forge 28:10 – We Bury the Dead 31:25 – Nirvanna the Band the Show – The Movie 35:59 – Deepfaking Sam Altman 39:40 – The Baltimorons 45:02 – For Worse 49:21 – The Surfer 53:14 – The Makings of Curtis Mayfield 54:27 – Make It Look Real 57:07 – Caper 59:50 – We Are Storror 1:03:59 – Are We Good? 1:07:02 - Outro

What makes parkour jam spaces unique, and how do they shape the experience of movement, community, and accessibility? A church, a jam space, and a parkour gym—what do they have in common, and why does it matter? "The empowerment, and the kind of liberation to not care what other people think, does have a limit for some folk, I guess. I love it. I think for me, it's been great and really powerful. I really like not caring anymore about being bad at stuff in particular— that's so freeing." ~ Nina Ballantyne (14:00) The conversation explores the concept of parkour jam spaces, emphasizing how they lack defined boundaries, making them more accessible in theory but sometimes intimidating in practice. The discussion touches on the contrast between structured athletic environments and the open, fluid nature of parkour, where new participants must navigate unspoken social norms rather than physical barriers. The conversation also highlights the paradox of accessibility—while jam spaces remove formal entry requirements, social and cultural factors can still create obstacles, especially for marginalized individuals. The discussion transitions into broader themes of public space, inclusivity, and the intersection of parkour with community projects. A significant portion focuses on an initiative to purchase a historic church in Edinburgh and transform it into a community space. The conversation reflects on how physical spaces carry different meanings based on personal and cultural perspectives. The comparison between parkour jam spaces and community-driven spaces like the church highlights the broader theme of reclaiming and redefining public areas for collective benefit. Takeaways Jam spaces and accessibility — The absence of a physical boundary in a jam space doesn't mean it's truly open to everyone, as social and psychological barriers still exist. The role of unstructured environments — Unlike traditional sports with defined spaces and rules, parkour operates in public spaces, leading to unique challenges in inclusivity and belonging. Marginalized groups in public spaces — Individuals who are already scrutinized in society, whether due to gender, race, or body type, may experience additional barriers when engaging in parkour. The impact of early experiences — Many practitioners come into parkour without formal athletic backgrounds, which shapes their approach to movement and learning. Cultural norms within parkour — Different communities have their own customs, such as specific greetings or approaches to training, which can be both welcoming and exclusionary. Reclaiming public space — Parkour's ability to redefine urban spaces extends beyond movement, influencing broader discussions about who has access to and control over public areas. Indoor vs. outdoor training — While some practitioners prefer the spontaneity of outdoor training, indoor spaces provide a structured environment that can be more accessible to beginners or marginalized groups. The intersection of parkour and community work — The discussion about repurposing a church into a community space parallels parkour's ethos of adapting and reclaiming environments. The perception of churches as public spaces — Depending on cultural background, a church can be seen as either a welcoming community hub or an exclusive, imposing institution. The role of storytelling in community building — Sharing experiences and narratives within parkour fosters a sense of shared culture and belonging. The importance of understanding different motivations — Some practitioners seek challenge, while others prioritize playfulness, relaxation, or self-expression. The limits of parkour's inclusivity — While parkour prides itself on being an open and adaptable discipline, social realities can still make participation difficult for some individuals. Resources Access Parkour — A parkour organization in Scotland that provides training opportunities and works on community-focused projects. Leith St Andrews Trust — The charitable organization working to purchase and repurpose a church in Edinburgh as a community space. Coach Europe — A parkour coaching conference that brings together practitioners to discuss teaching methodologies and movement philosophy. Richard Marshall — A parkour practitioner and speaker who discusses the importance of play in movement training. (Written with help from Chat-GPT.) --- Hello

In this engaging conversation, Phil and Toby Segar explore the themes of connection, passion, and the importance of experiential education. They discuss how sharing personal interests can foster deeper connections, the role of failure in learning, and the significance of vulnerability in adventure. The conversation also delves into the perception of risk and how childhood experiences shape our understanding of it, ultimately emphasizing the value of embracing challenges and learning from mistakes. They alson discuss the importance of allowing children to experience risk to foster confidence and resilience, the psychological implications of safety measures in climbing, and the evolution of public perception towards parkour. The dialogue emphasizes the balance between managing risk and encouraging growth through experiential learning.   Failure is an integral part of the learning process. Vulnerability can enhance connections in adventure sports. Experiential education allows for creative learning opportunities. Risk perception is often influenced by societal norms. Childhood experiences shape our understanding of risk. It's important to create environments where people can explore without fear. The relationship with one's ego evolves over time. Sharing vulnerabilities can make experiences more relatable. Engaging with risk can lead to personal growth and confidence. Allowing children to experience risk fosters confidence. Risk homeostasis can lead to increased danger despite safety measures. The perception of safety can create a false sense of security. Experiential learning is crucial for personal development. Public perception of parkour has evolved positively over time. Understanding risk is essential in adventure sports. Failing often and learning from it is key to growth. Community engagement can shift perceptions of extreme sports. Teaching risk management is more beneficial than eliminating risk. The journey of skill development takes time and experience. What do you do after you've had one successful first-person zombie game that is owned by a publisher? You don't develop the proper sequel in that series and you instead make your own version of that thing. We're going back to 2015 to look at a first-person zombie action survival game. We're talking Dying Light. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at Techland finding their niche in the zombie world with Dead Island, before their relationship with that game's publisher ended. We also discuss a a very good tagline that was almost definitely inspired by George Clooney; an announcement trailer that was almost definitely inspired by Peep Show; a world-building trailer that was almost definitely inspired by those poetry adverts; Techland's answer to a housing crisis; and battering punching bags in the car park. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: the vicious, running Volatile zombies give chase at night; GTA 4 police radar; fairly uninteresting nighttime sneaking; waiting hours to rub zombie guts on yourself a la The Walking Dead to blend in; enemies are attracted to sound, but you have no way to regulate the noise the protagonist makes, but you can throw firecrackers; crossbows come in handy with humans; swinging all manner of melee weapons at the heads of the undead; an uninviting crafting menu that makes you wait for your items; no fun human battles; fluid parkour (once you've levelled up and bought skills like “slide on the ground”) that gets the David Belle seal of approval; Mirror's Edge; the grappling hook; the skill trees; slower first-person platforming puzzles; a decent Escape from New York-style setup that is let down by some terribly boring characters; American saviour Kyle Crane and his very quick turn to good; and a contained zombie outbreak. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Dying Light is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Shadow of Rome on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

The past six years have been marked by a contentious political atmosphere that has touched every arena of public life, including higher education. Though most college campuses are considered ideologically progressive, how can it be that the right has been so successful in mobilizing young people even in these environments? As Amy J. Binder and Jeffrey L. Kidder show in this surprising analysis of the relationship between political activism on college campuses and the broader US political landscape, while liberal students often outnumber conservatives on college campuses, liberal campus organizing remains removed from national institutions that effectively engage students after graduation. And though they are usually in the minority, conservative student groups have strong ties to national right-leaning organizations, which provide funds and expertise, as well as job opportunities and avenues for involvement after graduation. Though the left is more prominent on campus, the right has built a much more effective system for mobilizing ongoing engagement. What's more, the conservative college ecosystem has worked to increase the number of political provocations on campus and lower the public's trust in higher education. In analyzing collegiate activism from the left, right, and center, The Channels of Student Activism: How the Left and Right Are Winning (and Losing) in Campus Politics Today (U Chicago Press, 2022) shows exactly how politically engaged college students are channeled into two distinct forms of mobilization and why that has profound consequences for the future of American politics.
