If you listened to our episode last week, you know that Denise has spent a lot of time in Colorado lately. It hasn't just been family business, however. On her last trip, she got a good look around Castle Rock--and found that what used to be a stop-off city between Denver and Colorado Springs has now expanded FAR beyond a day of shopping at outlet malls. James also made the most recent trip to the Centennial State for some mile-high mischief and this is our recap! Check out our YouTube Channel, which is bursting at the seams with way more content! We also have a bonus section where DJ Briggs of BightSideHomeTheater.com gives us his list of five things he thought were super cool. Check out his podcast to find out why he felt that way. As climate change fans hotter and longer heat waves, breaking record temperatures and leaving dozens dead, the poorest Americans often suffer the hottest days with the fewest defenses. Centralized air, once a luxury, is now more a matter of survival. Especially in cities like Denver, Portland and Seattle, which are accustomed to cooler summers, the barrage of heat has highlighted that low-income households, renters and people of color are far more likely to face grueling temperatures without central cooling. Many have window units that can offer respite, but running them nonstop balloons energy bills. While billions in federal funding have been allocated to subsidize utility costs and cooling systems, experts say they often only support a fraction of the most vulnerable families and some still require prohibitive upfront costs. Installing a centralized heat pump, which offers heating and cooling, can easily reach $25,000. As temperatures rise, so too does the cost of cooling. In Denver's Globeville neighborhood, most residents are low-income and people of color living in stretches of concrete and asphalt that hold heat like a cast iron skillet. They can face much hotter surface temperatures than those living in Denver's wealthy neighborhoods such as a place called Country Club, where mansions pocket a sea of vegetation that shades and cools the area, according to an analysis by American Forests, a group that partly advocates for tree equity in cities. About 10% of the U.S. population have neither central air conditioning nor a window unit, a disparity compounded for marginalized groups, according to a study by the Brookings Institution. Less than 4% of Detroit's white households don't have air conditioning, for example, while that's 15% for Black households. In the federal Inflation Reduction Act, billions were set aside for tax credits and rebates to help families install energy-efficient cooling systems like heat pumps — some of those are yet to be available. The Inflation Reduction Act will also offer rebates — point of sale discounts — to install systems like a heat pump, which are more energy efficient and can both heat and cool a home. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

A few years ago, the New York Times spent a weekend in Denver as part of its “36 Hours” series, offering a guide for how a visitor to the Mile High City could get the most out of our lovely city. This Denver travel guide felt somewhat theoretical, at best, and painfully unaware, at worst. Sooooo, we decided to fix it and make our own! Today on the show, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval to lay out our own “36 Hours in Denver,” giving visitors an on-the-ground guide to the restaurants, attractions, and city-close outdoor excursions that make this place great. Paul mentioned our episode on DIA conspiracy theories. Bree talked about the Forney Museum's old home in REI, and the story behind the historic brick building, which you can read about in our newsletter, Hey Denver! What did we miss? We want to hear your can't-miss spots that never fail to impress visitors. Leave us a voicemail or a text at 720-500-5418, and you might hear it on the show soon! Here's a list of all the places we recommended: Colorado Tick Club (Curtis Park) Blucifer (DIA) RTD's A-Line (It's Free all August!) He's been referred to as the real life “Willy Wonka!” Gonzo Jimenez is a celebrated pastry chef, chocolatier and República del Cacao's North American corporate pastry chef. We believe, if Willy Wonka was real, he would actually want to be Gonzo Jimenez. Gonzo, as he openly says, "had a very blessed start,” originally from Northern Argentina and was raised in a Spanish household surrounded by good food and long family meals. These strong family values helped him find his calling in food, but specifically on the sweeter side of the business. His early training taught him that he was able to apply not only science, but also artistic expressions when it came to presenting beautiful sweets and confections. He was instantly hooked and found his true calling. In addition to being a valued República del Cacao partner, Gonzo is an educator, Co-owner and chocolatier of Miette et Chocolat in Denver Colorado where he currently lives. You may also recognize him from the Netflix Original Series “BakeSquad," hosted by Christina Tosi, where Gonzo and the cast of talented pastry chefs develop some of the most incredible treats for life celebrations.
