There's a lot to consider when you're an expat, in or outside the UK, and trying to be tax compliant. You might not think so, but tax planning starts before you even book your flights. In this episode, I'm joined by Nicola Goldsmith, one of our trusted UK partners for Expat Taxes UK, for the first part of a really practical conversation around UK tax planning for expats.Nicola brings nearly three decades of experience in cross-border tax, and what I particularly enjoy about this discussion is how grounded it is in real-life decision-making. As Nicola agrees, tax is far more about problem-solving than it is about numbers. We walk through the fundamentals of UK tax residency, what actually determines where you're taxed, and why timing is everything if you're planning a move. This comes up a lot in conversations with clients, because people usually leave decisions too late and miss opportunities that are entirely legitimate.Nicola explains how differences in tax years can create short windows for planning, the importance of understanding your income streams across borders, and how new rules like the FIG regime are changing the landscape for those arriving in or returning to the UK.If you're considering a move to or from the UK, or you're already navigating life across jurisdictions, this episode will help you better understand the common misconceptions and where early advice can make a meaningful difference to your overall tax position.Main Topics Discussed in this EpisodeWhy Tax is Really About Problem Solving: Nicola shares her journey into tax and explains why the real skill lies in solving people's individual circumstances—not crunching numbers.Understanding the Complexity of UK Tax Rules: We discuss how UK tax legislation works in practice, including why headline rates can be misleading and how different rules interact in unexpected ways.Planning Ahead When Leaving or Moving to the UK: The key thing to note here is that early planning creates opportunities—particularly around timing, structuring income, and managing assets across borders.Using Tax Residency Timing to Your Advantage: This is one of those areas where small timing differences—sometimes just days—can open up legitimate planning opportunities, including periods of non-residence.A Practical Overview of UK Tax Residency Rules: Nicola breaks down the fundamentals of UK tax residency, including automatic tests, the ties test, and how split-year treatment works in real-life scenarios.Book a consult with Nicola Website: www.expattaxes.co.ukLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-goldsmith-tep-cta-b22363149/*****Use the link below and quote "Expat Taxes" when registering with Currencies Direct to receive a €50 One4All or Amazon voucher when you transfer €5000 or more in your first six months with Currencies Direct.*Click here for a special offer from our sponsor, Currencies Direct******If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! Summary This is a summary of a paper published by the alignment team at UK AISI. Read the full paper here. AI research agents may help solve ASI alignment, for example via the following plan: Build agents that can do empirical alignment work (e.g.~writing code, running experiments, designing evaluations and red teaming) and confirm they are not scheming.[1]Use these agents to build increasingly sophisticated empirical safety cases for each successive generation of agents, gradually automating more of the research processHand over primary research responsibility once agents outperform humans at all relevant alignment tasks. We argue that automating alignment research in this manner could produce catastrophically misleading safety assessments, causing researchers to believe that an egregiously misaligned AI is safe, even if AI agents are not scheming to deliberately sabotage alignment research. Our core argument (Fig. 1) is as follows: The goal of an automated alignment program is to produce an overall safety assessment (OSA) - an estimate of the probability that the next-generation agent is non-scheming - that is both calibrated and shows low risk.[2]Producing an OSA involves several tasks that are difficult to check. We refer to these as hard-to-supervise fuzzy tasks: tasks [...] ---Outline:(00:13) Summary(07:10) Acknowledgments The original text contained 4 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: May 14th, 2026 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/gpuYFbMNH8PJXpmny/automated-alignment-is-harder-than-you-think-1 --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. Most women think the answer to making more money is working harder, longer, or squeezing more into an already packed schedule. In this episode, I break down why that is one of the biggest wealth traps I see, and how the real game is learning to create more output with the exact same input. I'm sharing the identity shift that helped me turn a $54K cash week into over $1M in long-term wealth, why Tony Robbins earns hundreds of millions in the same 24 hours we all have, and how to stop optimizing for cash… and start optimizing for true wealth. Tune in to learn: The one reason people like Tony Robbins make millions with the exact same hours you have The difference between optimizing for cash versus optimizing for wealth The identity shift that can help you create 20X more wealth with the exact same time and money you have right now What leverage actually is + how to create more output for the same input in your business, money, and life Why working harder is not what creates the biggest financial results + what high-net-worth women do instead

Today, Adam applies that same passion and innovation to PACHA, a company he co-founded with his wife Maddie to bring clean, organic, allergen-free food to a growing audience. Adam is also proudly Palestinian. His grandparents immigrated from Ramallah, and this heritage has guided PACHA's recent collaboration with Sindyanna of Galilee, a female-led nonprofit that brings together Arab and Jewish women through sustainable agriculture. Together, they've created a limited-edition Fig & Olive “Peace Loaf” using Sindyanna's organic olive oil, with proceeds from the release supporting Sinndyanna's “Bees for Peace” initiative. This biodynamic beekeeping program gets Israeli and Palestinian women working side by side to foster cross-cultural connection and ecological healing. Adam brings a rare combination of entrepreneurial savvy, cultural depth, and climate leadership to every conversation—and his story is a powerful one for audiences exploring food as a pathway to peace, justice, and regeneration. Over a warm cup of tea and a well-worn star atlas, Stella sets out to help her unexpected visitor find his way home. Together they climb to the rooftop, where the whole sky opens up above them, and Fig finally spots the Pleiades — his cluster of seven sisters — glimmering near the horizon. Further reading: Beavers Have Metal Teeth Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. Let's find out about some animals that incorporate metal into their bodies in more than just trace amounts. We'll start with the scaly-foot gastropod, a deep-sea snail. It lives around hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean, about 1 and ¾ miles below the surface, or about 2800 meters. The water around these vents, referred to as black smokers, can be more than 350 degrees Celsius. That's 660 degrees F, if you even need to know that that's too hot to live. The scaly-foot gastropod was discovered in 2001 but not formally described until 2015. The color of its shell varies from almost black to golden, depending on which population it's from, and it grows to almost 2 inches long, or nearly 5 cm. It doesn't have eyes, and while it does have a small mouth, it doesn't use it for eating. Instead, the snail contains symbiotic bacteria in a gland in its esophagus. The bacteria convert toxic hydrogen sulfide from the water around the hydrothermal vents into energy the snail uses to live. It's a process called chemosynthesis. In return, the bacteria get a safe place to live. The snail's shell contains an outer layer made of iron sulfides. Not only that, the bottom of the snail's foot is covered with sclerites, or spiky scales, that are also mineralized with iron sulfides. While the snail can't pull itself entirely into its shell, if something attacks it, the bottom of its foot is heavily armored and its shell is similarly tough. Researchers are studying the scaly-foot gastropod's shell to possibly make a similar composite material for protective gear and other items. The inner layer of the shell is made of a type of calcium carbonate, common in mollusk shells and some corals. The middle layer of the shell is regular snail shell material, organic periostracum, which helps dissipate heat as well as pressure from squeezing attacks, like from crab claws. And the outer layer, of course, is iron sulfides like pyrite and greigite. Oh, and since greigite is magnetic, the snails stick to magnets. The scaly-foot gastropod is the only animal known that incorporates iron sulfide into its skeleton, but other animals use metals in their teeth. Some spiders have tiny amounts of zinc in the tips of their fangs. Some mollusks have small amounts of iron in the teeth of their radulas—you know, the tongue-like structure used to scrape food off rocks. The teeth of the limpet, a type of mollusk, may be one of the strongest structures in the world. It contains goethite nanofibers, and goethite is a type of iron. The teeth of beavers and some other rodents contain iron in the enamel coating. This makes the teeth much harder, although the amount of iron is quite small and unstructured. Most other mammals, including humans, have magnesium in tooth enamel instead of iron. The iron content makes the teeth look orange because of rust. Bloodworms are disgusting horrible worms that my uncle used to fish with when we visited the beach when I was a kid. I was scared of the bloodworms, which irritated my uncle, because I was very vocal about hating the worms and he wasn't catching any fish with them. Bloodworms live in the sand or silt of shallow water, usually in the ocean but since they can tolerate low salt levels, they may also live farther inland in canals and inlets. Some species can grow nearly 15 inches long, or 37 cm. They're usually pink or reddish in color with bristles along the body and four little antennae on the head. But the reason I'm talking about them here is that their teeth are reinforced with copper that makes them nearly as hard as teeth coated with enamel. Its jaw also contains copper ions. Copper is toxic to most animals, which may be the source of the bloodworm's venom. That's right: horrible worms are also venomous. Another invertebrate that incorporates metal in its body is the parasitic fig wasp. Fig wasps are interesting and there are a lot of them. Figs are pollinated by fig wasps that are not parasitic. The fig flower has a bulb at its base containing a tiny hole. The pollinating fig wasp crawls into the hole, pollinating the flower at the same time, and lays her eggs inside the bulb. She then dies. As the fig developes, the wasp eggs hatch into larvae and then develop into adult wasps. Males mate with females, then chew a hole out of the fig, but only the female wasps have wings, so the males remain and die. As the fig ripens, it actually digests the dead wasps, and—and this is important to those of us who really like figs—leaves no bits of dead wasp inside the fig. So that's how the pollinating fig wasps work. It's a symbiotic relationship between the fig tree and the wasp. But the parasitic fig wasp is different. The female has a long ovipositor, which it uses to drill into developing figs and into the pollinating fig wasp larvae. When its eggs hatch, they eat the larva alive. This is yet another reminder that nature is disgusting! But the really interesting thing is that at least one parasitic fig wasp species, Apocrypta westwoodi, has an ovipositor that resembles a drill bit, and it's hardened with zinc. The ovipositor is basically a syringe with a drill bit, but since it's so strong while being much thinner than a human hair, researchers are studying its structure to help develop minimally invasive medical syringes. One interesting note. You'd think that iron and other metals would be more common in animal bodies as armor. Animals use some metals for various purposes as it is, like the iron containing hemoglobin in our blood. But incorporating iron and other metals into the body has a high metabolic cost and frequently biological materials are stronger than metal in the ways that count. Plus, they don't rust. Thanks for your support, and thanks for listening!

He spent four years working alongside arguably the greatest male gymnast of all time in Kohei Uchimura. His achievements include two all around Olympic titles and six back to back world championships gold medals which made him the most dominant athlete in the sport for a decade. Preceding the time he spent with Uchimura, Hiroaki coached the great Naoya Tsukahara the Athens 2004 Olympic champion with team Japan. Since Paris he is now working in Australia as the high performance head coach of the men's gymnastics team with the 2032 Olympic Games being held in Brisbane. Hiroaki sits on the FIG commission and is passionate about coach education. Was St. Francis of Assisi the First Silicon Valley Critic? Dan Turello on 800-Years of Tech Anxiety

“We read so as not to feel alone.” — C.S. Lewis (possibly)Dan Turello is a cultural historian of medieval Italy, a much published photographer, and the author of the new Connection: How Technology Can Make Us Better Humans. I'm sceptical. Especially the promise (or illusion) of better humans. But Turello's definition of technology goes back further than most — all the way to the original fig leaf. When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden, the first thing they did, he reminds us, was cover their bodies. Technology, then, in Turello's framing, is everything that extends beyond the human body. Clothing is technology. Double-entry bookkeeping is technology. The iPhone is just the latest chapter of our technology story that began at the beginning. His most surprising argument is that our current tech anxiety has medieval roots. St. Francis of Assisi was what he calls a trust-fund kid “avant la lettre” — his father being a wealthy 13th century silk merchant at a time when northern Italy was Silicon Valley. Francis sold some of his dad's silk, gave the money away, stripped naked before a bishop, and founded a counterculture movement. The first tech backlash, Turello suggests, wasn't against AI. It was against double-entry bookkeeping. Dante, writing a generation later, idealised an earlier, simpler Florence — what scholars call “paleolithic chic.” No makeup, no ornate clothing, no fleeing to immoral cities. Sound familiar? On AI, Turello goes a bit Saint Francis on us. Large language models, he fears, generate material without lineage — you can't trace where the ideas came from, can't triangulate the sources, can't validate against reality. Technology is about power, Turello argues — about who controls the storyline. Making us better humans, then, requires recovering a sense of agency. Thus he argues that we should stop outsourcing our thinking, our writing, our photography to machines. Dante wrote the entire Divine Comedy without Claude. These days, we can barely write an email without a little help from our friends at ChatGPT. Machiavelli donned the robes of the past to think and write. We might try putting ours on too. But then isn't that a tech solution too? Five Takeaways•       St. Francis Was a Trust-Fund Kid Who Invented Counterculture: His father was a wealthy silk merchant in 13th-century Italy, at the dawn of Europe's commercial revolution. Francis sold his father's silk, gave the money away, stripped naked before a bishop, and founded an order that rejected the mechanisms of early capitalism. The first tech backlash wasn't against AI. It was against double-entry bookkeeping.•       Technology Is Everything Beyond the Naked Human Body: Turello's definition goes back to Genesis. When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden, the first thing they did was cover their bodies. Fig leaves are technology. Clothing is technology. The iPhone is just the latest iteration of a metaphysical problem that's been destabilising us since the Fall.•       Dante Wrote the Divine Comedy Without Being Able to Edit: He penned an entire macrocosm of the medieval world from memory, without the ability to rewrite in any meaningful way. Turello thinks Dante would be concerned that we're losing our memories, our ability to tell a coherent narrative for our lives, and that our existence has become too fragmented. We can barely write an email without ChatGPT.•       LLMs Generate Material Without Lineage: Technology is about power — about who controls the storyline. Large language models produce text without traceable sources, without verifiable origins, without lineage. You can't triangulate where the ideas came from. That's not intelligence. That's a crisis of provenance.•       Agency Still Matters: Turello's hope for humanity is that we recover a sense of agency — the belief that our choices, friendships, relationships, and communities are ours to shape. The alternative is technological determinism: the machine decides. Machiavelli donned the robes of the past to think and write. We might try putting ours on too. About the GuestDan Turello is a writer, cultural historian, and photographer. Ever had that moment when you're relishing a juicy fig, and someone drops the bomb that you might be chowing down on a wasp? Surprising as it sounds, it's true. Fig wasps do their thing by pollinating figs from the inside, but unfortunately, they sometimes get stuck in there! Now, bear in mind, these wasps are tiny, at around 1 to 2 mm tiny, so you won't notice them when you take a bite. But, let's switch gears from figs and delve into what makes a fruit not quite as vegan as you might think. There are some steadfast rules for those rocking the vegan lifestyle: no animal flesh, no by-products from livestock like milk, eggs, cheese, or honey, and definitely no additives like E120, a colorant made from insects. That's the universal baseline. Beyond that, depending on personal beliefs, some might steer clear of non-organic or environmentally questionable items. We are live in New York City with reality television royalty — Renee Graziano — and from the first minute, it's iconic chaos, deep vulnerability, and explosive truth. The episode opens with jokes about the FBI “waiting outside” as Renee reflects on her groundbreaking run on Mob Wives, the show that redefined reality TV. She shares what it meant to grow up the daughter of Anthony Graziano, a respected consigliare, clarifying that “mob privilege” wasn't white privilege — it was loyalty, respect, and family code. Fashion takes center stage as Renee reminisces about mink coats, ostrich feathers, and unapologetic mob glam — proving Mob Wives delivered couture long before Housewives. Pol is living for the fur, diamonds, and drama. Author, Erotica & Unfiltered Talk Renee dives into her erotic novel Playing with Fire, inspired by love, betrayal, and danger. What follows is a surprisingly philosophical (and hilarious) conversation about intimacy, celibacy, and why Renee has been celibate since April 2023 after discovering a shocking betrayal. The honesty is raw, funny, and deeply human. Trauma, Betrayal & Survival The mood shifts as Renee opens up about surviving domestic violence, sexual assault, and devastating betrayal — including her ex-husband cooperating with the government, leading to unimaginable family consequences. Her story of discovering a wired watch gifted by her ex leaves the room stunned. She also shares her sobriety journey, including surviving a fentanyl overdose that left her clinically dead with cracked ribs. Her perspective is powerful: recovery isn't just about substances — it's about healing from trauma, shame, and self-destruction. Mob Wives Legacy & Reboot Rumors Renee confirms rumblings of a potential Mob Wives reboot and teases throwing her son a televised wedding — with Pol designing the gown. The energy is playful but hopeful. The conversation turns heartfelt as they honor the late Angela Raiola. Renee remembers Big Ang's generosity, humor, and “ginormous” heart, imagining her running a nightclub in heaven with her father. Entrepreneurial Glow-Up Renee introduces her mob-inspired skincare line, BAD (Beautiful and Dangerous) Body Butter, with cheeky names like Fig-get About It, Coco Nostra, Made Melon, Biscotti Boss, and Vanilla Vendetta — tongue-in-cheek branding rooted in heritage and humor. The Coffee Reading – Rebirth Revealed Pol's Armenian coffee reading becomes the emotional climax. He describes Renee as deeply guarded, emotionally triple-locked — then sees an opening at the top of the cup: rebirth. Renee reveals her name means “reborn” and “spiritually renewed,” and her last name means “grace.” The synchronicity leaves everyone speechless. The reading affirms a recent epiphany sparked by news of her ex-husband's release and a powerful spiritual conversation with her late father. The message is clear: transformation is happening now. Renee leaves feeling “naked” in the best way — spiritually exposed but empowered. It's laughter, mob lore, candor, survival, hustle, and divine rebirth in one unforgettable episode. → Watch on YouTube → Detailed Show Notes → Timestamps: (00:00) An overview of the The Old Testament.(04:27) Bryce breaks down the Old Testament into nine time periods.(09:41) Canonization and the creation of the Greek Septuagint. The authors of the New Testament quoted the Greek version of the Old Testament. The version that Jesus used is unknown.(13:01) The Old Testament is not one book written by a single author. It is an anthology of books written over centuries by individuals. Later authors sometimes rejected and edited earlier authors. Remnants remain that multiple Gods participated in the creation. The first word in Genesis invites us to consider the Grand Pre-mortal Council.(20:03) The creation accounts address why the world was created, not how. The purpose of the earth is to create eternal families.(33:17) Ancient cultures shared the creation story at their temples during the New Year. The time-honored principle of marriage and family are connected to the purposes of creation.(36:21) Chaos played a role in the formation of the earth. God transformed unorganized matter into something beautiful. The cosmology of the Bible invites modern readers to think about scripture differently.(41:18) The temple takes us to the creation and the creation takes us to the temple because each us back to God.(48:25) Moses 2 and 3 can be read as a single account. This is contrasted with the documentary hypothesis, where scholars believe Genesis 1 and 2 come from two different sources because of differences in the text.(54:21) Seven eternal lessons in the creation account invite us to find success during our time on earth. Finding balance between work and rest.(1:00:29) Seek spiritual things first, then temporal.(1:01:50) Cherubim and a flaming sword foiled Satan's plan and preserved the space between the trees. God protected our probationary estate. God knew from the very beginning that we would sin and need time to repent.(1:13:11) Satan's Plan B is to get us to take away our own or someone else's probationary state. Toxic perfectionism is addressed. Continual progression is what matters to God.(1:16:55) The river flowing out of Eden as a symbol for the division found in mortality. We must find ways to be unified.(1:23:08) Instead of focusing on what we are missing, our focus should be on all our blessings.(1:28:23) Pardes is an acronym to describe the ways of reading scripture: Peshat, remez, derash, and sod. The plain reading (peshat), allegorical or hidden reading (remez), the moral or imperative sense or application (derash), and the mystical, esoteric, or temple reading (sod).(1:30:13) The rib in Genesis 2.22 symbolizes partnership in marriage.(1:38:44) “Helper” or ʿēzer as found in Genesis 2.18 has often been misread and used to subjugate women. The term translated as “help meet” actually denotes the kind of powerful help that God gives. Eve's position next to Adam places both in a setting as having dominion over the whole earth. Eve is called “Zoe” in the LXX, the mother of all the living ones. There is no kingdom without Eve.(1:47:02) Fig leaves can represent covering our sins with bigger and bigger lies.(1:52:47) Garments are a piece of the temple that we wear to remind us of our connection to the Savior's atonement. → For more of Bryce Dunford’s podcast classes, click here. → Enroll in Institute → YouTube → Apple Podcasts → Spotify → Amazon Music → Facebook The post Ep 354 | Genesis 1-2; Moses 2-3; Abraham 4-5, Come Follow Me 2026 (January 12-18) appeared first on LDS Scripture Teachings.
