Title: "Catching Up With Ken Munro After Infosecurity Europe 2025 — Hacking the Planet, One Car, One Plane, and One System at a Time"A Post–Infosecurity Europe 2025 Conversation with Ken MunroGuestsKen Munro Security writer & speakerhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ken-munro-17899b1/HostsSean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazineWebsite: https://www.seanmartin.comMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder, CMO, and Creative Director at ITSPmagazineWebsite: https://www.marcociappelli.com___________Episode SponsorsThreatLocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974___________After a whirlwind week at Infosecurity Europe 2025, I had the chance to reconnect with Ken Munro from Pen Test Partners — a longtime friend, hacker, and educator who brings cybersecurity to life in the most tangible ways. From car hacking escape rooms to flight simulators in pubs, we talked about why touching tech matters, how myth-busting makes us safer, and how learning through play might just be the key to securing our increasingly complex world. Tune in, and maybe bring a cocktail.⸻There's something special about catching up with someone who's not just an expert in cybersecurity, but also someone who reminds you why this industry can — and should — be fun. Ken Munro and I go back to the early days of DEFCON's Aviation Village, and this post-Infosecurity Europe 2025 chat brought all that hacker spirit right back to the surface.Ken and his crew from Pen Test Partners set up shop next to the main Infosecurity Europe venue in a traditional London pub — but this wasn't your average afterparty. They transformed it into a hands-on hacking village, complete with a car demo, flight simulator, ICS cocktail CTF, and of course… a bar. The goal? Show that cybersecurity isn't just theory — it's something you can touch. Something that moves. Something that can break — and be fixed — before it breaks us.We talked about the infamous “Otto the Autopilot” from Airplane, the Renault Clio-turned-Mario Kart console, and why knowing how TCAS (collision avoidance) works on an Airbus matters just as much as knowing your Wi-Fi password. We also dug into the real-world cybersecurity concerns of industrial systems, electronic flight bags, and why European regulation might be outpacing the U.S. in some areas — for better or worse. One of the biggest takeaways? It's time to stop fearing the hacker mindset and start embracing it. Curiosity isn't a threat — it's a superpower. And when channeled correctly, it leads to safer skies, smarter cars, and fewer surprises in the water we drink or the power we use. There's a lot to reflect on from our conversation, but above all: education, community, and creativity are still the most powerful tools we have in security — and Ken is out there proving that, one demo and one pint at a time. Thanks again, Ken. See you at the next village — whichever pub, hangar, or DEFCON corner it ends up in.⸻Keywords: cybersecurity, ethical hacking, pen testing, Infosecurity Europe, embedded systems, car hacking, flight simulator, ICS security, industrial control systems, aviation cybersecurity, hacker mindset, DEFCON___________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from Infosecurity Europe 2025 London coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/infosec25Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? ⬥GUEST⬥Tobias Halmans, OT Incident Responder | GIAC Certified Incident Handler | Automation Security Consultant at admeritia GmbH | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tobias-halmans/⬥HOST⬥Host: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/imsmartin/ | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com⬥EPISODE NOTES⬥Business continuity planning is a familiar exercise for most IT and security leaders—but when you move into operational technology (OT), the rules change. In this episode of Redefining CyberSecurity, Sean Martin talks with Tobias Halmans, an incident responder at admeritia, who helps organizations prepare for and respond to incidents in OT environments. Tobias shares why disaster recovery planning in OT requires more than simply adapting IT frameworks. It demands a change in approach, mindset, and communication.OT engineers don't think in terms of “ransomware readiness.” They think in terms of safety, uptime, manual fallback options, and how long a plant can stay operational without a SCADA system. As Tobias explains, while IT teams worry about backup integrity and rapid rebooting, OT teams are focused on whether shutting down a system—even safely—is even an option. And when the recovery plan depends on third-party vendors, the assumptions made on both sides can derail the response before it begins.Tobias walks us through the nuances of defining success in OT recovery. Unlike the IT world's metrics like mean time to recover (MTTR), OT environments often hinge on production impacts and safety thresholds. Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) still exist—but they must be anchored in real-world plant operations, often shaped by vendor limitations, legacy constraints, and tightly regulated safety requirements.Perhaps most importantly, Tobias stresses that business continuity planning for OT can't just be a cybersecurity add-on. It must be part of broader risk and operational conversations, ideally happening when systems are being designed or upgraded. But in reality, many organizations are only starting these conversations now—often driven more by compliance mandates than proactive risk strategy.Whether you're a CISO trying to bridge the gap with your OT counterparts or an engineer wondering why cyber teams keep showing up with playbooks that don't fit, this conversation offers grounded, real-world insight into what preparedness really means for critical operations.⬥SPONSORS⬥LevelBlue: https://itspm.ag/attcybersecurity-3jdk3ThreatLocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974⬥RESOURCES⬥Inspiring Article: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/sarah-fluchs_notfallvorsorge-in-der-ot-traut-euch-activity-7308744270453092352-Q8X1⬥ADDITIONAL INFORMATION⬥✨ More Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast:

How can you find a mentor? For this Women of Color Rise episode, I speak with Veronica Conforme, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Greenhouse E3, a national nonprofit developing diverse pipelines of future education leaders. Veronica describes herself as a rebel—she turned down her father's advice to become an accountant and instead set out to change the world. Her career includes serving as COO of the NYC Department of Education, leading UP Education Network in Massachusetts, and serving as Chancellor of the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan. Veronica credits mentorship as a key to her success—but not as luck. It came through clarity, purpose, and values-aligned work. “You have to be really clear about what you're trying to achieve,” she says. “I grew up in the South Bronx, saw inequity firsthand, and knew I wanted to disrupt systems and change outcomes for communities like mine.” Because she led with purpose, mentors found her through the work. “I wasn't from the education sector, but when I helped principals rethink how to use their budgets to serve their communities, people noticed. They'd say, ‘Come work with us.' That's where mentorship happened—in the work, through shared values.” Veronica offers this advice for finding a mentor: Get clear on your mission. What change do you want to make in the world? Be open. Stay open to help, new relationships, and new perspectives—even if they come from unexpected places. Do the work. Lead with your values, show what you're about, and opportunities will follow. Make it mutual. Mentorship should be a two-way street. “You're not only pouring into me,” she says. “I'm bringing something to the table too.” Thank you, Veronica, for your leadership and your wisdom. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Joe Jones discuss:The transition from traditional legal practice to entrepreneurshipStrategies for evaluating and managing professional riskTools and systems that support solo and startup legal venturesThe mindset and preparation needed to pursue legal tech innovation Key Takeaways:Successfully transitioning from law firm practice to a tech-driven startup can be less daunting when done gradually, by maintaining income and slowly validating the new concept before fully stepping away.Fear of entrepreneurial failure can be reduced by building out clear backup plans—even unconventional ones—to provide psychological safety and optionality during uncertain times.Implementing automated scheduling systems and encouraging clients to use them can significantly reduce administrative burden, lower phone interruptions, and create a more organized and prepared client experience.New product ideas should be tested not by pitching, but by asking target users how they currently solve the problem, which leads to more honest feedback and uncovers existing competitors or gaps in the market. Dear Rosies,In this week's episode of the Rose Woman, we explore the foundations of human flourishing with Dr. Darcia Narvaez, a groundbreaking researcher who bridges neuroscience, anthropology, and evolutionary wisdom. Dr. Narvaez is an explorer of human potential, asking profound questions about how early experiences shape our moral development, well-being, and connection to the world around us.Dr. Narvaez examines how early life experiences (the evolved nest) influence moral functioning and well-being in children and adults. Questions that interest her include: How does early experience shape human nature? What can sustainable indigenous societies teach the modern world? What types of moral orientations do individuals develop in species-typical and atypical environments? What is indigenous ecological wisdom, and how do we cultivate it? How can educators and parents foster optimal development, well-being, and communal imagination? The industry faces ongoing pressure to innovate, reduce costs, and improve efficiency, while still ensuring robust and reliable results. In this practical, energetic episode, host David Brühlmann welcomes Scott Wheelwright, Chairman, CTO and Co-Founder of BioChromatographix International (BCI). With a career spanning continents - Asia, Europe, and North America - Scott's perspective is forged from hands-on manufacturing, technology transfer, and building high-growth companies from scratch. He's not just innovating the science behind chromatography; he's lived the manufacturing realities, spanning everything from precision antibodies to complex gene therapies, and now leads a team solving the tough purification puzzles holding progress back. Here are three reasons why this episode is a must-listen:Continuous Innovation in Chromatography: Despite a hundred-year legacy, chromatography still holds tremendous untapped potential, especially with new materials and continuous processing, as Scott highlighted with real examples from gene and cell therapy applications.Bridging Lab to Market Needs Customer Focus: Getting new technology into commercial use requires not just technical innovation, but deep user engagement, robust feedback loops, and iterative improvement, plus ongoing education to help users understand new benefits.Embrace Experimentation and Global Collaboration: Whether building companies in Asia, Europe, or the U.S., Scott reminds us that learning from failure, being open to international collaboration, and not being afraid to try new things are essential for long-term growth (and enjoying the biotech journey along the way!).If you're passionate about downstream processing, tech innovation, or just want to hear inspiring leadership lessons, check out the full episode and connect with Scott Wheelwright or visit the company's website to follow his team's advancements.Connect with Scott Wheelwright:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/scottmwheelwrightWebsite: www.biochromatographix.comCurious about chromatography? Yard Stick is pioneering the measurement of soil carbon, addressing one of the most invisible yet critical components of climate solutions. With $18 million in funding, the company has developed spectral measurement technology that quantifies soil carbon stocks at field level—unlocking the potential of agricultural systems that store many times more carbon than all plant and animal biomass combined. In this episode, we sat down with Chris Tolles, CEO and Co-Founder of Yard Stick, to explore how they're commercializing breakthrough soil science, navigating a skeptical market, and building trust in the emerging voluntary carbon market. Topics Discussed: The critical role of soil carbon in climate solutions versus traditional forest carbon storage Yard Stick's origin story during COVID-19 and meeting co-founders in a Slack group How the Department of Energy's Smart Farm program catalyzed soil carbon measurement technology The connection between agricultural feedstocks, biofuels, and carbon intensity measurements Building credibility in a scientifically skeptical field through academic publishing Marketing strategy centered on trust-building rather than traditional tech company approaches The challenge of creating a new market category for soil carbon measurement services GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Lead with scientific credibility when entering skeptical markets: Chris made the deliberate decision to publish in Geoderma, the world's top soil science journal, despite the pain and slowness of academic publishing. He explains, "Because we're operating in an industry with so much suspicion around measurement and we're trying to make a claim that we're replacing an alternative existing mature measurement technology, I just didn't see a world in which I could sleep at night without the rigor that scientific publishing represents." B2B founders entering fields with established scientific communities should prioritize credibility over speed, especially when challenging existing measurement standards. Be radically transparent about limitations to build trust: Rather than overselling capabilities, Yard Stick proactively discloses their technology's current limitations. Chris notes, "I think we are way above average, candid about the opportunity and the limitations of our technology with our customers... just like put your liabilities on the table. Then when a customer does say yes, despite those risks, you're all on the same page about what to expect." This approach is particularly powerful in technical fields where customers have sophisticated evaluation capabilities. Participate authentically in existing industry establishments: Instead of positioning as disruptors, Yard Stick actively participates in traditional soil science conferences and communities. Chris emphasizes, "We go to the Soil Science Society of America's annual meeting, we present there, we have real scientists present there. Being able to hang on their terms is important." B2B founders should consider how to earn credibility within existing professional communities rather than trying to bypass them entirely. Focus on enabling customer success rather than fighting competitors: Chris takes a "big tent" approach to the climate solutions space, refusing to position against other carbon removal technologies. He explains, "I see a lot of people in the soil ecosystem fight for their teeny little sliver of airtime by talking down to engineered solutions... I think that's a waste of time because we need all of these solutions to be successful in order for the whole ecosystem to grow." This collaborative positioning helps expand the overall market opportunity. Build your go-to-market strategy around regulatory tailwinds: Yard Stick's timing aligned perfectly with Department of Energy initiatives to reduce carbon intensity in agricultural feedstocks. Chris explains how they capitalized on the DOE's Smart Farm program, which recognized the need for field-level emissions measurement. B2B founders should identify regulatory or policy drivers that create urgency for their solutions and align their market entry accordingly. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. Callan, also known as “Sap” is the Co-Founder of Threshold Labs, the managing team behind Threshold Network's tBTC, a trust-minimized bridge enabling native Bitcoin in DeFi. Why you should listen Threshold Network is a decentralized infrastructure protocol that leverages threshold cryptography to provide privacy and access control services on public blockchains. It was formed through the merger of two projects, Keep and NuCypher, with the aim of enabling secure and decentralized custody and data privacy. One of its core offerings is tBTC, a decentralized bridge that allows users to bring their Bitcoin onto Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks in the form of an ERC-20 token that is fully backed 1:1 by BTC. tBTC is designed to address the limitations of custodial wrapped Bitcoin products, such as WBTC, which rely on centralized entities to hold users' BTC. Instead, tBTC uses a network of randomly selected node operators that collectively manage custody through threshold signature schemes. This structure ensures that no single party can access or move the underlying BTC, enhancing security and decentralization. The latest version, tBTC v2, introduces a scalable and permissionless model, progressively shifting control from human intermediaries to protocol-based guarantees. Bitcoin DeFi—or BTCFi—is an emerging segment of decentralized finance that aims to bring Bitcoin's liquidity into smart contract ecosystems. Historically, Bitcoin has been underutilized in DeFi due to its limited scripting capabilities and incompatibility with platforms like Ethereum. Bridges like tBTC are key to unlocking Bitcoin's potential in DeFi, enabling BTC holders to participate in lending, yield farming, liquidity provision, and collateralized borrowing—all while retaining exposure to Bitcoin. By offering a decentralized, trust-minimized bridge, Threshold Network positions itself as a foundational layer in this growing ecosystem. Send us a textKimberly LaRose's journey from a nine-year diagnostic odyssey to creating an award-winning vodka demonstrates the remarkable resilience found in the IBD community. After struggling with unexplained symptoms that doctors repeatedly misdiagnosed, Kimberly finally received her Crohn's disease diagnosis and discovered that gluten and corn were major inflammation triggers for her body.Rather than seeing her dietary restrictions as limitations, Kimberly embraced a philosophy of "replacing, not removing." This positive mindset would prove transformative when she attended an event where she couldn't eat or drink anything due to her restrictions. What began as a half-joking call to a friend about creating their own vodka evolved into Wisher Vodka – a sugar beet-based spirit that's gluten-free, grain-free, and vegan. The path from concept to award-winning product wasn't simple. Kimberly and her co-founder Emily researched 300 distillers, visited 60 personally, and developed a unique production process that includes lab testing every batch to ensure purity. Their commitment to quality and transparency has earned them multiple prestigious awards, including Grand Vodka of the Year with a remarkable 98-point taste rating from the Bartender Spirits Award.Beyond the business success, Kimberly's story highlights how health challenges can unexpectedly open new doors. "I wouldn't have created Wisher had I not been diagnosed with Crohn's," she reflects. Her work supporting the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation further demonstrates her commitment to the IBD community that sparked her entrepreneurial journey.Whether you're navigating dietary restrictions, seeking inspiration for managing chronic illness, or simply appreciate the story behind your spirits, Kimberly's journey reminds us that sometimes our greatest struggles lead to our most meaningful creations. Orchestrate all the Things podcast: Connecting the Dots with George Anadiotis
Can AI work reliably at scale? Will everything be outsourced to AI? Will AI replace CEOs? Why is everyone riding the AI bandwagon, and where is it headed? These are the type of questions you would ask someone with long-standing experience in AI, engineering, business and beyond. Georg Zoeller is that someone: a seasoned software and business engineer experienced in frontier technology in the gaming industry and Facebook. Zoeller has been using AI in his work dating back to the 2010's, to the point where AI is now at the core of what he does. Zoeller is the VP of Technology of NOVI Health, a Singapore-based healthcare startup, as well as the Co-Founder of the Centre for AI Leadership and the AI Literacy & Transformation Institute. Zoeller has lots of insights to share on AI. And yet, the reason we got to meet and have an extensive, deep and fun conversation was a joke gone wild. Ryp Labs is tackling one of the world's most pressing problems: food waste. Every minute, enough food is wasted globally to feed over 1 million people for a day. If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest producer of greenhouse gases behind the US and China. In this episode of Category Visionaries, we sat down with Moody Soliman, CEO and Co-founder of Ryp Labs, to learn how his ag-tech startup raised $11 million to develop a revolutionary sticker technology that extends produce shelf life using natural plant compounds. Topics Discussed: Ryp Labs' five-year R&D journey to develop natural food preservation technology The pivot from targeting US/European markets to focusing on Central and South America How the company leveraged trade shows and competitions for organic marketing The decision to target distributors and packing houses over direct-to-consumer sales Scaling challenges and the critical "ship it" moment that validated their technology Future expansion plans into meat, seafood, dairy, and other food categories GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Follow market pull, not your assumptions: Ryp Labs initially targeted US and European markets, assuming these large, developed markets would be most receptive. However, they found no traction because established players had been "doing the same thing for 50 years" and were resistant to change. When they pivoted to Central and South America, they discovered customers who were highly motivated to export internationally and faced significant cold chain breaks. Moody explained, "We ended up completely shifting our go to market strategy to focus on those areas... they are highly motivated to ship their fruit internationally and to export it to the US or to Europe, because that's where they can get much higher prices." B2B founders should test multiple markets and follow where customers are genuinely desperate for solutions, not where they think the biggest opportunity exists. Use trade shows and competitions as unfair advantages: Ryp Labs leveraged their "fun and easy to comprehend" technology to win numerous competitions and secure organic media coverage. Moody noted, "We have almost unfair competitive advantage that it's such a fun technology and such an easy technology to comprehend. So we won a lot of those competitions and awards and that gives us free advertisement." For deep-tech startups with limited marketing budgets, industry competitions and trade shows can provide disproportionate exposure and credibility. B2B founders should identify events where their technology's unique aspects can create memorable impressions. Break the engineer's pencil at the right moment: Despite his team's protests that the product wasn't ready, Moody made the critical decision to ship to a major retailer in 2021. "All right guys, we've taken it as far as we can right now. We just got to put it out there and put it in a customer's hand... we'll learn if it doesn't work." This decision provided the validation and momentum needed to continue development. B2B founders in deep-tech must balance perfectionism with market feedback - sometimes shipping an imperfect product to the right customer is more valuable than months of additional development. Target the most centralized part of the supply chain: Ryp Labs initially considered selling directly to consumers but recognized the variability in handling would create inconsistent results and blame on their technology. Instead, they focused on distributors and packing houses where "all 1 million pack of strawberries is going from the farm into 2 degrees C" with predictable transportation conditions. This centralized approach allows them to "sell a million stickers to a distributor as opposed to going to 100,000 customers and selling them 10 stickers each." B2B founders should identify the most controlled and centralized points in their target industry's value chain. Design for regulatory constraints from day one: Coming from the medical device industry, Moody applied a crucial lesson: "You don't develop a technology and then go back and look at the regulatory process... You have to look at that on the front end, really understand what the requirements are going to be from a safety standpoint, and then develop the product to meet those requirements." This approach enabled Ryp Labs to achieve OMRI listing for organic produce and use only food-grade compounds already recognized as safe by the FDA. B2B founders should map regulatory requirements early and design their technology to meet these constraints rather than retrofitting compliance later. What if a group of students created their own college because no one else would accept them? That's exactly what happens in the 2006 movie Accepted, where a handful of students—rejected by every school they applied to—decide to take matters into their own hands. They invent a fake university, build a website, rent a building, and unknowingly attract hundreds of other students who also felt pushed out by the traditional system. What starts as a lie quickly transforms into something surprisingly real: a student-led, curiosity-driven learning environment where everyone is accepted for who they are. On the surface, it's a comedy. But underneath the jokes and wild antics is a powerful question that feels more relevant today than it did nearly 20 years ago: Is college really necessary for every student—or has the system become more about tradition and conformity than about helping kids thrive? In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, we explore the message behind Accepted and how it mirrors a growing sentiment in education: that we need to rethink what success looks like, who gets to define it, and how we create learning environments that put students first. Whether you're an educator, parent, school leader, or just someone who's ever asked “Why do we do it this way?”, this episode is for you. Takeaways: While the movie delivers plenty of laughs, it also challenges the rigid, one-size-fits-all structure of traditional higher education. It asks: What happens to students who don't fit the mold? With rising tuition costs, student debt, and alternative career paths, many students today are questioning the traditional college route. Accepted sparks conversations about whether higher education is serving students—or just serving the system. The fictional South Harmon Institute of Technology thrives because students have control over their learning. This aligns directly with modern education movements that prioritize student agency, passion-based learning, and flexible pathways to success. At its core, Accepted is about belonging. When students feel safe, supported, and seen, they're more likely to engage, take risks, and grow. That's a message that transcends comedy and it's the foundation of good education.
