This episode covers the first 5 years of the reign of Ala'uddin Khalji- from his occupation of Delhi after his uncle's assassination in 1296 C.E. to the battle of Kili against the Mongols and the rebellion of his own nephew in 1301 C.E.

We return to the narrative this episode and to the house of Balban as his son simply refuses to become Sultan, leaving that responsibility to his own young son. What follows is drama of the first order, full of debauchery, tragedy, rebellion and betrayal. In the end, a new dynasty seizes power and begins to make the first inroads south of the Vindhyas.

We move eastwards from Delhi over to the Yamuna Ganga Doab, before we turn south onto the Deccan Plateau, taking a bird's eye view of the kingdoms that ruled here at the end of the 13th Century C.E. This episode, we look at the successors of Iltutmish and the 45 year rule of Ghiyasuddin Balban, a pivotal moment in the history of the Sultanate.

Iltutmish spent the last years of his life trying to reassert Delhi's control over North India and worrying about his succession. In 1236 C.E., he died and was succeeded by his daughter, Raziya. Raziya's 4 year rule was marked by prosperity for the people but she faced the hostility of the Turkish nobles who wished to seat a puppet on the throne.

In this episode, we'll cover the rise of Iltutmish and the first part of his reign from 1210 C.E. to 1223 C.E, touching on the conflicts with Qabacha and Yalduz and his legendary political shrewdness. We'll also have our first look at a force that will define the whole of the 13th century - the Mongols.

A year after his defeat at Tarain, Moizuddin returns the next year with a new army and on the very same battlefield, emerges victorius. This episode covers the second battle of Tarain (1192 CE) and its aftermath. It ends with the death of the first Sultan of Delhi, Qutb ud Din Aibak.

In this episode, we follow the happenings in Central Asia, from the last days of Mahmud in 1030CE to 1163CE and the establishment of the Ghurid, Khwarezmian and Qara Kitai empires over the ruins of the Ghaznavids and Seljuks. We then look at the rise of Ghiyath al Din Mohammad bin Sam and his brother Moizuddin, whose ambitions of acquiring an empire for himself would bring him to India. Moizuddin's first campaign in 1173 C.E. to Gujarat ended in defeat at Mt. Abu. His second expedition in 1191 C.E. would see him annex the remaining Ghaznavids in Punjab and march on the Chahamana territories ruled by Prithviraja III from Ajmer. Their first encounter at Tarain ended in a military disaster for the Ghurids when the entire Chahamana army charged into their ranks. We end this episode with Moizuddin's retreat to Ghazni.
