Day 6 of the Brian Walshe murder trial gave jurors something they won't forget — surveillance footage of a masked man in blue latex gloves pushing a cart through a Lowe's on New Year's Day 2023. Inside that cart: a hacksaw, a hatchet, a utility knife, a Tyvek suit, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies. The total was $463.23. He paid cash. Hours later, prosecutors say Walshe drove to a liquor store in Swampscott — a place where he was a regular, a place that was closed for the holiday — and tossed a trash bag into the dumpster behind the building. Police recovered that bag. Inside they found carpet fragments with blood clots, human hair, and a piece of Gucci jewelry with the brand name engraved on it. Ana Walshe owned Gucci jewelry. Crime lab specialist Matthew Sheehan walked the jury through the blood evidence. The hacksaw tested positive. The hatchet tested positive — and carried a greasy residue consistent with cutting into human tissue. The hammer, the tin snips, towels, slippers, carpet pieces — all positive. A kitchen knife hidden above the refrigerator in the Walshe home came back positive for blood. But here's where the defense runs into trouble. The bedroom — where Brian Walshe's lawyers claim Ana died suddenly of natural causes — was forensically clean. No biological evidence on the floor, even after investigators dug up a section of it. Day 6 of the Brian Walshe murder trial gave jurors something they won't forget — surveillance footage of a masked man in blue latex gloves pushing a cart through a Lowe's on New Year's Day 2023. Inside that cart: a hacksaw, a hatchet, a utility knife, a Tyvek suit, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies. The total was $463.23. He paid cash. Hours later, prosecutors say Walshe drove to a liquor store in Swampscott — a place where he was a regular, a place that was closed for the holiday — and tossed a trash bag into the dumpster behind the building. Police recovered that bag. Inside they found carpet fragments with blood clots, human hair, and a piece of Gucci jewelry with the brand name engraved on it. Ana Walshe owned Gucci jewelry. Crime lab specialist Matthew Sheehan walked the jury through the blood evidence. The hacksaw tested positive. The hatchet tested positive — and carried a greasy residue consistent with cutting into human tissue. The hammer, the tin snips, towels, slippers, carpet pieces — all positive. A kitchen knife hidden above the refrigerator in the Walshe home came back positive for blood. But here's where the defense runs into trouble. The bedroom — where Brian Walshe's lawyers claim Ana died suddenly of natural causes — was forensically clean. No biological evidence on the floor, even after investigators dug up a section of it. For years now, scientists have shown that daily exposure to bright light therapy, which simulates the intensity of outdoor light, can be beneficial for people with insomnia and other sleep disorders, Seasonal Affective Disorder or other forms of depression. But what if bright light therapy can help people recover from concussions or other traumatic brain injuries? And what if it can also lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, which people with TBIs are at higher risk for?    Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University were recently awarded a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to explore these questions and possibly unlock more secrets about sleep and its effect on health. The OHSU researchers will recruit nearly 120 military veterans who have suffered a TBI. The participants will be given a light box to use at home for one hour each morning for four weeks. Blood samples will be drawn from participants to look for changes in markers that signal inflammation in the brain and changes in oxygen uptake in brain cells.    MRI scans of participants’ brains will also help reveal if the bright light therapy has improved activity of the glymphatic system - a relatively recent discovery about the role of sleep in reducing toxins that can lead to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Joining us for more details of the study and to share new insights about sleep science is Jonathan Elliott, assistant professor of neurology and co-director of the Sleep & Health Applied Research Program at OHSU.

Darren isn't just a womanizer with power. He's a predator operating within the justice system. To stop him, Robert must take on not just the suspect, but the system protecting him. Sergeant Robert has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. Prior to becoming a detective, he spent nine years on patrol, where he served as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and an FBI-trained hostage negotiator. As a detective, he worked in a unit that investigated crimes against children, including sex crimes, serious physical abuse and child homicides. He was later re-assigned to the violent crimes unit, where he investigated homicides, robberies and other serious felonies. He was an active member of his county's major crimes team, which investigated homicides and officer-involved shootings. After 10 years in investigations, Robert was promoted to sergeant.
