We're on a break at the moment, researching and writing our sixth series, but, to fill the gap, this is the second of six new compilation episodes containing a trio of stories from across our earlier series. We've entitled this episode Three Tales of Friendship for obvious reasons. These stories are about pals – the bestest of buddies – or about forging friendships, because, in times like these, what's much more important? They include our first-lap Rutland story, Three Eggs a Penny, our first-lap Buckinghamshire story, A Promise Kept, and our recent Worcestershire story, The Malvern Ogre.We really hope you enjoy them, and will be back with another new compilation episode next Monday. Or, if you're a Patreon Supporter, on Thursday with our Patreon Exclusive episode for January, and our new episode of the Three Ravens Film Club about 2020's The Night House, all before our February newsletter comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. We're on a break at the moment, researching and writing our sixth series, but, to fill the gap, this is the first of six new compilation episodes containing a trio of stories from across our earlier series. We've entitled this episode Three Tales of Chivalry because, following on from our 25-part retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight, we imagined listeners might be jones-ing, for some shining armour and talking horses. As such, this episode contains three of our more knightly stories, including our second-lap Cornwall story, The Once and Future King; or The Mad Man's Dream, our second lap Northamptonshire story, Dionysia The Female Knight, and our live retelling of The Many of Adventures of Arundel the Horse, and His Blundering Knight, Sir Bevis of Hampton, as performed at The Chichester Festival last summer. We really hope you enjoy them, and will be back with a new compilation episode next Monday. A restless fairy creates a restless trinket with the power to grant its bearer three wishes, but as each wish is grant, the last wish fades away. Genre: Fairy Tale Excerpt: A restless fairy grew bored one day and created a restless trinket, imbuing it with all of the fairy's magic. The magic was all bent toward one purpose, to grant the bearer of the trinket three wishes. The form the trinket first took was as a pendant, which the fairy gave to a human acquaintance with only three instructions…or warnings. What's the Writing Prompt that inspired the story? You are granted three wishes. Each wish can only be used once and not at the same time as another wish. What do you wish for?Source: A Writer's Year: 365 Creative Writing Prompts. Text by Emma Bastow. It's been a crazy month, and the Halloween Haunts countdown of bonus episodes suffered as a result. To make it up to you after a lengthy delay, I'm sharing a trilogy of terror - three scary old time radio shows to enjoy in the days before Halloween. First, Frank Lovejoy learns about the consequences of defying a voodoo curse in "Papa Benjamin," a Cornell Woolrich adapted for Escape (originally aired on CBS on January 24, 1948). Next, Peter Lorre stars in "The Black Cat," Edgar Allan Poe's tale of cruelty, rage, and a killer undone by the strangest of circumstances from Mystery in the Air (originally aired on NBC on September 18, 1947). Finally, Ida Lupino and Vincent Price co-star in Lucille Fletcher's Victorian era horror story "Fugue in C-Minor" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on June 1, 1944).
Many think that the people who write about money on the internet were either born with a special "saving and investing" gene, or they had to grind their way to the top. The good news? Our guest today, The Humble Dollar's Jonathan Clements (and former Wall Street Journal Personal Finance columnist) shares tales from some of the top writers on his site and how they stumbled their way to victory. We talk about paying down debt, investing wisely, rent vs. buy, and much, much more. In our headline segment, a new study shows what product mix changes financial advisors intend to use with clients in the next twelve months. Can their tweaks help you with your own money? We'll share. Plus, in our TikTok minute, two creators have found a way to get rich quick: rob a bank...but creatively! You'll hear it here. Of course, we'll also share Doug's mind-bending trivia and much, much more! Enjoy! First, we explore "The Mule Kick," a case that took place in South Carolina in 1941, which involved a wealthy filling station owner's brutal murder, a deadly shootout, and scandalous extramarital affairs. Next, we uncover the unsolved murder of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers, who was found burning alive in a small Mississippi town with no clear motive or suspect identified. And finally, we examine the tragic fate of Holly Bobo, a nursing student from Tennessee who was kidnapped and murdered in 2011, with her remains found years later in a shocking discovery. http://DeepLore.TV --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deeploretv/support

The Martha Mitchell Effect Martha Mitchell, wife of John Mitchell, Attorney General of the US under President Richard Nixon, was not afraid to speak ‘truth to power'. She was so influential that President Nixon would go on to say that without her, there would have been no Watergate scandal. Despite her important role, Mitchell has, in the years since Watergate, become a forgotten figure. Co-producer of The Martha Mitchell Effect, Judith Mizrachy states that this is a result of a successful gaslighting campaign against her. The film aims to give Mitchell the credit she is due. How Do You Measure A Year? Jay Rosenblatt started filming conversations with his daughter, Ella, when she was just two years old. He continued to do so every year on her birthday until she turned 18. In How Do You Measure A Year? we see those conversations evolve as Ella goes from being a ‘toddler to [a] young woman'. How Do You Measure a Year? represents Jay's desire to learn and help Ella grow up, to empower her, and, as Jay says, help her to be herself. Stranger at the Gate A US Marine returns home from active service filled with hatred towards Muslims. He builds a bomb, intending to blow up his local mosque. But then, he meets the Muslims who worship there. They treat him with kindness and love. And that's after they discover what he intended to do. For director Joshua Seftel, Stranger at the Gate comes out of his wider The Secret Life of Muslims project, which is his attempt to counter the hatred Muslims received after 9/11. Stranger is an extraordinary story of friendship, forgiveness and reconciliation. Joshua notes how divided people have become today but also how we can ‘build impossible bridges between each other' so that strangers may become friends. This week we're reairing episodes featuring some of our favorite audiobooks we've covered on Behind the Mic. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile contributor Alan Minskoff discuss this unusual and absorbing audiobook full of interwoven stories from Jennifer Egan. Each performance is exceptional. Michael Boatman narrates the opening chapter, capturing the interior life of the enigmatic Bix Boughton, who invents a world-altering technology central to the plot. The time-traveling chapters reprise some of the characters from Egan's award-winning A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD, but this novel has a wider timeframe, a greater trajectory, and a more complex plot. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Simon & Schuster Audio. Find more audiobook recommendations at audiofilemagazine.com Support for AudioFile's Behind the Mic comes from Naxos AudioBooks. Read by Andrew Wincott, Flaubert's Three Tales is a collection of three compelling short stories about faith, loneliness and love. Elegant and bracing, it is a rich, stylistic showcase from the writer best known for the perennial favourite Madame Bovary. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A few months passed and we received a strange phone call from those farmers and produce merchants we had carted the onions for, they were in a big way of business, located to the north east of Boston and about ten miles out of town. They wanted to know if we were prepared to do them a favour by making a statement that we had never been paid for the delivery we made for them.In explanation, they said that the onions had been of poor quality and they were disputing payment.Onions are quite expensive when you are talking about 10 tons and the total was several hundreds of pounds, even in 1974.We had been paid a fair rate for the delivery we made. We mentioned all this tarry diddle to Albert and he was sure their had been nothing wrong with the onions themselves. Albert could be relied on regarding anything to do with farming. When we replied saying we could not possibly do what they asked, as it was untrue, they became very heated and difficult, offering various threats of one sort and another. As this was the one and only job we had ever be asked to do for them, and we did not work for any of their so called “friends”, we felt that their threats could do us no harm.Besides, the main issue was being honest, open and fair. Our reputation and work ethics were at stake!

Following in the footsteps of the Pied Piper series, I wrote my own story based off a dream I had: Neverwas is trapped in an abusive relationship with her mother. When she meets the Pied Piper, a beautiful hero who calls to her with his silver whistle, she transforms into the very essence of beauty and freedom. She follows the Pied Piper into the forest where he shows her the deep, dark secrets of his cave. Synopsis In the 1960s, an American composer named Steve Reich prepared some electronic pieces consisting of gradually shifting tape loops of the same prerecorded–and enigmatic–spoken phrases excerpted from someone telling a story. Reich quickly realized he could produce the same effect with conventional instruments and live musicians. These repetitive patterns and the gradual shifts came to be labeled “minimalist.” Three decades later, in May of 1993, Reich and his wife, the video artist Beryl Korot, created a large-scale piece they dubbed a "documentary video opera." Titled “The Cave,” it investigated the roots of Christianity, Judaism and Islam through prerecorded interviews, images projected on multi-channel video screens, and live musical accompaniment utilizing the speech patterns of the interviewees as the starting point for much of the score. On today’s date in 2002, at the Vienna Festival, Reich and Korot premiered another music theatre piece, entitled “Three Tales,” intended as symbolic parables of technology in the 20th century, the three topics being the crash of the Hindenburg, the early atomic bomb tests in the Pacific Islands, and the cloning of a sheep named Dolly. In this twentieth-century story of a quest for beauty, the writer Laura Freeman introduces us to Jim Ede, a man who, in creating Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, changed the way we look at art. We follow Jim from the trenches of the First World War to Lady Ottoline Morrell’s literary parties in Bloomsbury and a curating job at the Tate. He collected artworks by his friends Ben Nicholson and David Jones, acquired the estate of the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and designed a house in Tangiers that became a sanctuary for soldiers. These were stepping stones towards Jim turning derelict slum cottages into a home and gallery, a space for both tea and tours. And, as ever, we share recommendations for reading off the beaten track. Please find links to books, articles, and further reading listed below. Three of Aesop's fables re-told and re-arranged by Marlene Wurfel for kids: The Donkey in the Lion's Skin, The Crow and the Pitcher, and The Milkmaid and the Pail. Aesop was one of the sages of Ancient Greece, like Socrates. The stories ascribed to him are thousands of years old (all dating to at least 600 b.c.) and are called fables because they always include a moral lesson. Storytellers are always philosophers at heart, and so are kids.

For decades, coal was king in West Virginia. It paid good wages, paid the bills for many local services through taxes, and kept small towns alive. But more of our nation’s electricity is starting to come from other sources like wind and solar power. Coal is losing out. This Us & Them episode brings us three tales of coal and its future in Appalachia. Two of those tales come from men who grew up in the same neighborhood street in Charleston, WV and now hold very different perspectives. One owns mines, the other is an environmental lawyer. Our third tale comes from a journalist who has covered the coal industry for decades. He says West Virginia needs to look at another energy player - natural gas - to determine its future.

History lesson in the knowledge session. In a session back in January 2019, we took the then recent coinmetrics blog about inconsistencies in the Bitcoin Private monetary supply (https://coinmetrics.io/bitcoin-private/) as an opportunity to review that and two more prior hacks. The origin story of Monero (https://soundcloud.com/the-bitcoin-game/the-bitcoin-game-42-riccardo-fluffypony-spagni) and the hack of Cryptsy (since the original source is now down, here's the internet wayback machine archived version: https://web.archive.org/web/20160115053621/http://blog.cryptsy.com/). What all three incidents had in common is that actions of individual developers got by far not the scrutiny that they should have prior to being entrusted with projects and having their code deployed in production systems. It's a lesson in recent history and a call to caution.

The fate of Israel has long been seen by religious people of various stripes as intimately tied to cows. In the beginning, there was Moses’ battle over the Golden Calf, in which he struggled to bring his people around to monotheism. Then came the folks who believe, based on a passage in the Book of Numbers, that an essential step for hastening the coming of the Messiah is the sacrifice of a red heifer. In this episode of Israel Story, we bring together stories of these and other instances of bovine worship. Yochai Maital traces the origins of
