My friend Tamra and I tell stories of awkward moments that are immediately connected with being queer. This episode highlights some of the challenges and experiences we have faced in our lives that we would not have had to face if we were not queer or better yet, that we would not have had to face if queerness and being part of the vast Alphabet Mafia was seen as normal or acceptable. While things are looking up with the generations that are growing up nowadays somewhere on the LGBTQAI+ spectrum, other areas of life, specifically in the US, are being challenged and Conservative powers are setting the country back 50 years. Who is to say the civil liberties that queer youth take for granted today won't also be challenged by the bigots and homophobes as they try to take us back to the 1950s. Conversations with your queer elders are important just as learning history is important so we don't allow it to be repeated. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jes-muse/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jes-muse/support

In the mid to late 80s I decided I wanted to go to sleepaway camp. When my parents relented I realized my grandmother was steering the boat. The dreams of white water rafting, rock climbing, camping and other outdoor adventures faded away when I was given the choice between Weight Watchers camp in LaJolla, CA or a weight loss camp in upstate NY called Camp Shane. It's an emotionally loaded experience but it's not an altogether negative one and my guests this week helped me remember that there were fun times and heartwarming stories. There were also funny and embarrassing stories as well! Recorded between S. Florida, Northern California and Toronto, CN via Zoom.
