Oliver Sacks classic book The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat is one of the absolute classic texts in the genre of stories from the humanity of medicine. It's fascinating to go back to it with the mind of someone working in 2023.It was lovely to connect with Neurologist Louisa Kent to think about our responses to it and our perceptions of the way the book is written and the huge changes that have occurred in the last 20 years.

Mix two parts sorcery and one part elven revenge. Add a dash of political intrigue with a light splash of Nilfgaardian conquest. Shake violently and you have the recipe for Vol. 2's first episode, “Everybody Has a Plan ‘til They Get Punched in the Face.” Considering the game-changing nature of the episode, we thought it was only fitting that our discussion of it raises the stakes for us as well. So, inspired by Geralt's climactic head-to-head duel with Vilgefortz, we open up two different whiskeys from Woodinville Whiskey Co.—their award-winning bourbon and their rye. Will double-fisting our way through our discussion leave us wheezing and immobile like a certain monster-slayer? Or will it give us the liquid courage to revisit hard-to-watch scenes like the explosion of one major character, the utter heartbreak of another and the weirdly stilted acting of a third? Listen and learn, lovelies!

In this episode we examine what happens to the mind when it loses the perspective of the Right Hemisphere (RH) and is forced to rely on the Left Hemisphere's (LH) interpretation of the world. We will use the example of the well-known case reported by Oliver Sacks of the man who mistook his wife for his hat. We are exploring the hemisphere hypothesis that states that the two hemispheres of our brain have two dramatically different ways of relating to the world and that our minds get muddled when the perspective of one hemisphere (usually the LH ) dominates and suppresses the other (usually the RH). We can learn to recognize the symptoms of LH dominance by studying the lives of people with dysfunctional RHs, such as Dr. P who, among other things, lost his ability to recognize faces.

In his sermon on Jesus parable in Luke 12, Ben Stewart says we are both physically and spiritually part of the good earth, made from good soil, fertile ground, and created to participate in the generosity of the earth rather than to fight against it, to share in it rather than trying to contain and hoard it.

A man who allegedly told police he mistook his girlfriend for a burglar after shooting her to death has been charged with manslaughter. Bobby Wolfe is being held on $500,000 bail in the shooting death of 23-year-old Chrisheena Lee. Prosecutors asked for a much lower bond of $75,000, but on Tuesday, Judge Joy Thomas decided it was in the best interest of public safety to make it much more difficult for Wolfe to get out of jail. Wolfe's public defender revealed he does not have any prior felony convictions or a documented history of violence. She also said he is unemployed but has two children who depend on him. Chrisheena Lee's family said that Wolfe, a former football player at the University of Arizona, and she have a 2-year-old child together. Fortunately, the child was with another relative at the time of the shooting. (Source: ABC13) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leah-gordone/support

The title is self-explanatory, if a little long winded. In this episode I tell two stories, one short tale of embarrassing behavior and one longer tale about an awkward February spent living with someone who left a poo for us to find in an unexpected place. All stories are experiences that I have had personally and are told as I remember them, many years later. After adamantly denying the possession of any sharp item at the airport, Sky Tshabalala unfortunately found that he had a fork instead. This still counts as something prohibited at the airport. We then asked KZN listeners to share their experiences of times they were pulled on the side by security for having dangerous items. Take a listen
This book touched my heart, and it changed my mind about neuroscience. I wasn't going to read this book. While I was at my friend's house, I picked this book up and read the preface, written by Will Self. He wrote that Oliver Sacks is extraordinary in the way in which he fuses such humanity with his scientific probing of the brains of his patients. At that point, I got interested, and my friend told me I could borrow it. I gobbled the book up in two days. Having read the book, I can see what Will Self was saying. I used to feel that neurologists were dehumanising of people, seeing them as a pile of neurons, and seeing themselves arrogantly as masters of the most important discipline. Oliver Sacks couldn't be more different. He has a real care for the humanity, for the soul of his patients, even as he describes the areas of brain damage. He marries up scientific description and human concern in a way that is life-affirming and touching. I used to think that neuroscience is too low-level to be relevant to education, and that higher-level cognitive science is enough. To a large extent, I still believe this. Neuroscience in education seems to me like trying to understand why your browser plugin isn't working properly by inspecting your computer's microchips - yes, the fundamental problem is there somehow, but it's just not the best way of solving the issue. Eric Jensen's useless book Brain-based Learning also vividly showed how neuroscience seems incapable of making a tractable theory or set of coherent principles for teachers and others in education to work from (I covered this book in detail in episode 53). However, I now see a different relevance to neuroscience. Just as psychologists have been sampling too narrowly by focusing almost exclusively on Western university undergraduates, so have they been sampling too narrowly by only looking at people without brain damage. I see neurology now as a new ground in which to sample widely, in order to get a proper sense of how the mind works by considering really different minds, or minds that don't seem to work properly. Enjoy the episode.

Four St. Louis police officers are on trial for the beating of Luther Hall, a 22-year veteran of the department who was working undercover as a protester. The officers were part of a "civil disobedience team" that was meant to crack down on violence at protests. They beat Hall after mistaking him for a protester for filming them. According to Hall's suit, one of the officers has since been promoted to sergeant, showing how police misconduct is tolerated. The trial for Dustin Boone, who was acquitted in the beating, will take place next month after his first trial ended in a mistrial, and will use the video of Hall's beating as evidence in the second trial. #LutherHall . . . . . . . https://www.policebrutalityworldwidechannel.com/2021/05/a-new-video-captures-the-moment-when-cops-brutally-beat-a-fellow-officer-who-they-mistook-for-a-protestor/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/king-emjay/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/king-emjay/support

In today's episode, Katie has 30 minutes to become an "expert" on... Visual Agnosia, or The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat! Boom! Long Title! This one was a doozy! Whenever things get sciency up in here, we get a little nervous because it is not our personal forte. But the various disorders that fall under the umbrella of "agnosia" are so interesting and unknown, it was worth the deep dive. This episode was sparked by Katie's request to Zack that he let her know if he learned about a guy who thought his wife was a hat in psych class, and it turned into something great. We learned that there really was a man who mistook his wife for a hat, and the reason why we all know about him is because his neurologist wrote about him in a book. That man had visual agnosia - there's also auditory and tactile agnosia, and we get into them all. The brain is an incredible thing... and so much more delicate and complicated than we generally give it credit for! Also, if this episode isn't enough for you, you can watch an opera, a French play, an Indian play, and listen to a Scottish indie rock band album all based on "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat." * In this collection of remarkable case studies, physician and neurology professor Oliver Sacks introduces us to the bewildering world of the brain and its disorders. * From patients afflicted with frenzied tics, and those who can no longer recognize familiar faces and objects, to others who have lost great swathes of their memories, Sacks permits the reader a greater understanding of the often bizarre world of the neurologically impaired. * He describes with great compassion and humanity the nuances of each case, and the steps he could sometimes take to address the wildly varying conditions. * The emotions and personality of the patient, rather than the abstract symptoms, he argues, must be central to any treatment – it is essential to never lose sight of the individual, the ‘I' tragically obscured by neurological disease. Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? If you are an English major this isn't to offend you. But no I'm not an English teacher. And no I don't care for my English to be next level. For those that wen to school with me know that I'm a good student. I was 4.0 material. School was easy. It's just a matter of following directions. And this is how you can pass. This was me. Pay attention and then apply. Maybe this is why copy comes east to me. But I never was super word savvy. And you shouldn't be either. If you are a small business owner running an ad.. You should only worry about results. And that's me. I was writing copy in one of these FB groups for engagement. And this guy was super hype. He was telling me I should proofread my copy before I post. I did make a mistake in my copy. I didn't put the benefits of my services rather than the misspelling. I didn't care about that. And at the same time with those mistakes. I got tons of engagement. And picked up two new clients. It doesn't matter. As long as your English isn't so bad that it stops the flow of reading completely. Like this: Alskiddybsnshsgsf. See what that did? But anyway.. You don't want to be perfect. In fact, the reader likes mistakes. Why? Because it makes you more human. They'll feel connected because you make mistakes just like them. And you can capitalize on this. Remember people buy people. And back it up with logic. If they connect with you, they will be more likely to buy your product or service. So leave the writing mistakes. But that doesn't mean not to edit your copy. There are other things to look for. That only a copywriter would know. So hire one. Remember they are an expert at that. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Bolts - how they need to attached, and how the requirements for them differ in the Temple as compared to everywhere else. Also, the significance of Mehoza [What's What - where's where??], together with Rava... Also, the framing of this daf (and several) with regards to distinctions of practice, especially in the Beit HaMikdash, as compared to the rest of the country - when it comes to rabbinic enactments (shevut). Plus - moving on to a discussion of tents - establishing a tent on Shabbat being problematic. Construction on a boat... and what about a hat with a large stiff brim? Or a cloak?

In The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks tells 24 short-stories (all true) of some of his patients. The first chapter chronicles the story of one of Sacks' patients with visual agnosia (face-blindness) who literally mistakes his wife for a hat. The book is split into four sections: each section dealing with a particular aspect of brain function such as deficits, excesses, and altered perceptions. In this episode of On books we cover three Oliver Sacks books: Awakenings, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" (the story), Musicophilia. As well as an interview with Princeton University Neuroscience Professor Nathaniel Daw. Read the book notes @ www.on-books.com

Host: Indre Viskotnas Despite our individual differences, highlighted especially during an election, much of what we see, hear, smell or feel is shareable: that is, when standing in front of an object, we can more or less agree that it has a particular color, shape, texture, size and so on. But what if I tell you that I see an object clearly which you do not? Or hear a voice that doesn't have a physical source? Now we enter the world of hallucinations. Hallucinations, or perceptions of objects without an external reality, are not confined to the minds of people with schizophrenia or those who take hallucinogenic drugs. In many cultures, visions are considered a privileged state of consciousness; the trait of a special person chosen by some supernatural force to pass along an important message. But in our western worldview, hallucinations are often associated with a malfunctioning brain. What causes the startling, unbidden perception of something that seems very real, but has no material existence outside of our own minds? With reference to his own mind-altering experiences, the 'poet-laureate of medicine', Dr. Oliver Sacks, takes us through the looking glass and into the fascinating world of hallucinations. Oliver Sacks, M.D. is a physician, a best-selling author, and a professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine. He is best known for his collections of neurological case histories, including The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (1985), Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain (2007) and The Mind's Eye (2010). Awakenings (1973), his book about a group of patients who had survived the great encephalitis lethargica epidemic of the early twentieth century, inspired the 1990 Academy Award-nominated feature film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. Dr. Sacks is a frequent contributor to the New Yorker and the New York Review of Books, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His new book, Hallucinations (2012), has just been released.
