On deck: (3:39) I had to take a second to discuss about the Blizzard of 2026 in NYC as we have to dig out of another storm before we get to the month of March. (5:04) The USA Men's Hockey Team did it. They won their first gold medal since the Miracle on Ice back in 1980, defeating Canada 2-1 in OT. Despite the win, there's a bit of a stain in my eyes as to how it was won, which quite a few people share the same sentiment. I'll also put a bow on the Olympic Games as it wrapped up last night, with the next stop in France four years from now. (18:58) That'll lead me into the hockey as the season will resume on Wednesday. I'll take a look into what could possibly transpire over the next two months as we get set for a sprint to the Stanley Cup Playoffs from here on out. (34:52) The NBA is in full swing after the All-Star Break. I'll go over some of the key games over the weekend and peek at the schedule this week as there are some interesting games forthcoming for the Detroit Pistons. (42:25) College basketball had a huge weekend with the top four teams going at it against one another. I'll recap Michigan-Duke and Arizona-Houston as the sport heats up with their biggest month just one week away. (48:03) MLB's exhibition season has begun, but overall things are quiet in the sport. My guest today worked for Club Med from 1987 to around 2002, beginning his journey during the opening season of Club Med Sandpiper as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Over the years, he took on a wide range of roles with the company before leaving in 1997 to attend law school at Pepperdine University. His career has been anything but ordinary. He later became a Cruise Director with Norwegian and Celebrity Cruises and has even written two books. When Tracy K. Smith was named U.S. Poet Laureate in 2017, the country was in a fragile place. In her new book, Smith writes that, by then, “we'd come to find ourselves in a climate of language — I'd call it a national vocabulary — grounded in fear, derision, and the notion of an intractably divided nation.”But Smith believes that poetry rises above the grim jargon. In “Fear Less: Poetry in Perilous Times,” she describes poetry as a vehicle equipped to transport us beyond facts and figures to places where we may not even know we want or need to go. Smith joins Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to explore how poetry is uniquely positioned to transform our understanding of each other.
