Hello Friday! Hello LONG weekend! Hopefully your Memorial Day weekend is a good time. Speaking of the holiday, we took a look at some Memorial Day stats & info this morning. Also let you know what's on TV this weekend and what's in theaters. In the news this morning, Kwik Trip is still number one, David Kahl has died, we're getting rid of pennies, and a dude was throwing dirty diapers on the side of the road rather than disposing of them properly. In sports, the Brew Crew beat the Pirates last night, the Thunder got another win on the Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals, and the Florida Panthers also got a win over the Hurricanes in their playoff series. Elsewhere in sports, the Kentucky Derby winning jockey is appealing his punishment for whipping his horse too much during the race, Aidan Hutchinson is cleared for play, the College Football playoffs are changing again, and the Blackhawks got a new coach. Doc joined us to talk racing, thanks to County Materials in Holmen. Check out this heart-warming story about a woman in Canada who found a missing locket and was able to return it to the family of the original owner. Also had a cool story about a guy who used a drone to save a girl who was drowning. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who got busted for a probation violation while doing the "One Chip Challenge", a teacher dropped a baggie full of cocaine in the school's hallway, an airplane hit some serious turbulence during it's flight, a woman had an insane list of demands before her flight, a punk band that made a very interesting album, a "standing room only" plane ride, and a guy who was illegally towing people's cars & charging them money to get their vehicles back.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Finally going to dry up a bit today after all this rain. Which is good, because my lawn desperately needs to be mowed! As we get ready for the long, holiday weekend ahead, we took a bit of a look back this morning in the news with the latest on Steven Avery. Plus, an update on the alleged murder/suicide at UW-Platteville earlier this week. Also in the news, Judge Hannah Dugan was caught on video confronting ICE agents in the courtroom, the state of WI is testing milk for avian flu, and a few more arrests have been made in connection to the jailbreak in Louisiana. In sports this morning, the Brewers lost yesterday to the Orioles in extra innings, the Pacers beat the Knicks in overtime last night, and the Dallas Stars doubled up the Edmonton Oilers. Also, the Badgers/Fighting Irish game at Lambeau Field in 2026 has a new date, Colts owner Jim Irsay passed away, a new MVP in the NBA, and the Tush Push isn't going anywhere. Cool story about a lost class ring that made it's way back to the family of the original owner, and a morning news anchor at a TV station went into labor right before going on-air to deliver the news. It's another "Hypothetical Thursday" today, and Jean's question for Brian was, "If you could be any Muppet, which would you be?" Meanwhile, Brian's question for Jean was, "You can only have one pasta sauce for the rest of your life. Which are you choosing?" A couple of new "trends" are making the rounds, including men wearing cleats during their daily lives, rather than just on the field. And putting flowers in your toilet tank. In case you missed it, the enhanced Olympics are just a year away…and in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who got "parrot chlamydia", an idiot who jumped off a bridge, a man who died after a bee attack, a man who was chased by police while trying to get his diploma, and a guy who identifies himself as "Master Baiter".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Plus, 56% of people say it's okay to do THIS on a first date. There's a great story about a good Samaritan who saved an 87 year-old man's life after they performed CPR on him after he suffered a heart attack while out for a walk. And a Great Dane had a wonderful last meal thanks Texas Roadhouse. We discussed the latest on the Bill Belichick saga and the White Sox adding a "Pope Seat" to the ballpark. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", a great mugshot from a guy who got caught speeding, a threat of fork-related violence, a Utah man who kidnapped his girlfriend's family, and a nude 5k in South Carolina.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

If we try to hide the bad news for the buyer will that work?  How long with it work for?  Bernie Madoff died in prison, his wife left in a perilous state, one son dead from suicide and the other from cancer.  I call that family devastation.  He got away with his lies and cheating for quite a while.  He offered modest, but steady returns.  He told people he had no capacity to take their money, then rang them back at a later stage to say there was an opening.  They were grateful for the chance to give him their money.  The 2008 recession showed who was “skinny dipping” in the markets, as Warren Buffet termed it and Bernie could no longer sustain the fraud. If we are loose with the facts and the truth with our buyers, how will that go toward fostering the re-order culture we want to create?  The usual ploy is to downplay the costs by offering the best case example and not offering the most realistic case.  I was reminded of this the other day, while watching a video from the President of this particular organisation.  He wanted more money, a lot more money for this project.  Let's park the fact he was a hopeless advocate for his case, bumbling his way through his pitch.  The examples he offered were very carefully culled to make the pain look miniscule.  The obvious problem with that though was the vast majority of the stakeholders did not fit into that minimum damage category. He was trying to avoid the pain, but that came across as dodgy and duplicitous.  We have to reach for our financial calculators and work out the damage for ourselves and we are left to our own conclusions.  It would have been much better to meet the elephant in the room head on and explain why the bigger number was a good decision.  That way the seller controls the narrative, not the buyer.  Call out the number, then justify the living daylights out of it.  Talk about the long term benefits and the opportunity costs if we take no action now.  Pile on the value of the proposition in the context of the number.  Trying to talk about the value proposition unrelated to the number doesn't fly.  We need to connect them together as we explain the value.  We unveil the ugly number but wrap the pain up in the value to come, to the glorious future, to the sunny uplands, the better days hereafter.  Context is everything here.  Our hero didn't do that and I believe he missed a great opportunity to get people to back his proposal. When we are selling there is a number attached to the service or good.  Actual tangible objects are easier to understand from a pricing point of view.  Services though are nebulous.  I was selling some training to a major corporation and the people I was dealing with were HR folk located outside Japan.  If you live here, you understand the cost of living and all the relativities which apply around pricing. If you are in Hong Kong or Singapore you don't.  Living in these low tax, low cost environments makes Japan's numbers look stratospheric.  They told me our pricing was much higher than this Hong Kong located from who delivered for them in English speaking countries in Asia.  I asked them why they didn't use them for Japan.  Of course, they didn't know Japan, had no capacity to deliver here in cultural and linguistic contexts, so that is why they were talking to me.  Yet the expectation was my pricing would fit in with this other vendor, based in Hong Kong.  Who were these people?  I checked them out and they are nobodies.  They are not global, they don't have 109 years of credibility or 60 years on the ground in Japan. In the end, I had to do a demonstration of what we would deliver. It blew them away because the value proposition was so much greater than the other firm.  Now the cost, the higher price, the bigger ask, that larger number made sense.  I didn't fold on the price for two simple reasons.  I know our value and I know what companies here will pay for the value we generate.  Yes, it is Covid and yes it is perilous for training companies at the moment, but you have to believe in your value based pricing and you have to be prepared to fire the client. Don't run away from the hard conversations.  Instead find ways to demonstrate and show your value.  Keep honing your persuasion skills to sustain the narrative about why they should buy from you and buy from you now and keep buying from you.

In the latest episode of On The Line, Matt Gurney dives into the geopolitics of trade and the early days of a new Canadian government.First up, Ian Lee from the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University joins Matt to talk about the so-called “deal” recently announced between the United States and China. Ian isn't here to defend Donald Trump — and says so clearly — but he also offers a sharp take on how Trump's erratic approach to trade could still end up a political win for the U.S. That is, of course, if Trump can stay out of his own way. If he can? If his plan works? The implications for Canada? Not great. Especially if you're a fan of the auto sector. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Innovative Medicines Canada. With a new government in place, one thing remains clear: Canada must continue to prioritize patients and healthcare innovation. Innovative Medicines Canada is focused on collaborating with all levels of government to improve access to life-saving medicines and develop a healthcare system that prioritizes patients, ignites innovation, and drives economic growth.Canada's innovative medicines sector plays a critical role—not just in health outcomes, but in keeping us competitive on the global stage. That's why, even during a moment of political change, Innovative Medicines Canada is staying focused on the issues that matter most to Canadians. And as Canada moves forward with national pharmacare, Innovative Medicines Canada believes it's possible to expand access without limiting choice—by strengthening what works and fixing what doesn't.Visit innovativemedicines.ca to learn more.Later in the show, Jamie Carroll — Liberal member of The Line's Anti-Panel — returns to talk about the first few weeks of Mark Carney's term as prime minister. He and Matt unpack how the Liberals are settling into their new minority, what the Conservatives are doing (or not doing), and why the NDP still can't seem to catch a break — even after all that's happened. As always, like and subscribe at ReadTheLine.ca. And did you see the maternity ward in Green Bay that is full of pregnant nurses? If you've ever wondered why your food seems to taste better after a couple of cocktails, there's apparently some science behind that. A recent poll asked people what the ideal "body count" is for a person to have. Steve Bishop used to be a youth probation officer. He wanted to help young people navigate out of a juvenile justice system he knew was flawed. Now, as the Associate Director for Probation and System Transformation at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Steve works to transform youth probation systems around the country – from one that punishes making mistakes in ways that leave young people worse off and neighborhoods less safe to one that holds kids accountable for their actions by steering them toward the guidance and support that can help them grow into responsible adults. In this eye-opening conversation with host Maya Rupert, Steve talks about how we can create a more just and restorative system that’s steeped in relationships, trust, and community. This episode was made possible with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, an organization that develops solutions to build a brighter future for children, youth, families and communities. Jase and Jep recount a brutal day of treasure hunting that went from bad to worse as bad news started rolling in. After a rough week, the guys regroup and laugh about their "old man struggles" and feeling like they're falling apart. Jase finds a surprising opportunity when a fast-food mishap opens the door to an unexpected gospel conversation. The guys challenge Christians to embrace the mission of reaching just one person for Jesus, unpack the true meaning of being made in God's image, and explore how Peter's first sermon connected the ancient promises to a kingdom already breaking through. In this episode: John 6; Matthew 28, verses 28-30; Colossians 3, verse 10; Isaiah 54; Isaiah 55, verses 1-5; Psalm 22, verse 27 “Unashamed” Episode 1078 is sponsored by: https://fastgrowingtrees.com/unashamed — Save up to half-off on select plants and when you use code UNASHAMED at checkout you'll get an additional 15% off! https://tomorrowclubs.org/unashamed — Bring hope to kids in some of the darkest corners of the world.
