Delivering bad news? Ugh. No one likes it—but in real estate, it's unavoidable.
Sometimes, life writes love stories so unexpected, you couldn't make them up if you tried. Today's guests, Jennie and Bryan Drollinger, know precisely what it means to become lost and then, against all odds, be found. Years ago, Bryan and Jennie were young, in love, and full of possibility. But like so many couples, life had other plans. At a time where dating was limited to in person communication and catching someone at the right time on a land line, a few simple misses turned into misunderstandings. Bryan followed his path as a devout Mormon, got married, raised a family of seven, and built a successful career. Jenny married and settled into a marriage that blessed her with two beautiful children, yet there was an absence of that loving feeling she once dreamed of. Life brought challenges for both of them, including failed expectations, and the deep struggle of holding it all together, especially when marriage is intertwined with faith, community, and awareness that their lives were being spent more on the worst side, for better or worse.. Then came the unthinkable. Bryan's marriage ended, leaving him in one of the most challenging spaces of his life, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Simultaneously, as fate would have it, Jenny's marriage was ending as well, facing her own heartbreaks and growing pains. And then, the universe intervened. A random reconnection occurred when Bryan, needing an attorney, found himself seeking a consultation with the firm's paralegal. Her name? Jenny.. Sparks fared, and a realization that both of their winding, messy, painful roads had prepared them for this: a second chance at the love they once shared. Now, through their new podcast A Second Chance on Love, and upcoming book made for a movie, Bryan and Jennie are opening up about their journey, their lessons, and their hope for anyone who's wondering if it's too late to rewrite their love story. In the beginning, there were Cryptokitties. Well, maybe it wasn’t THE beginning, but it was the beginning of NFTs. In 2020, there were Blockchain Heroes. And meanwhile on Ethereum, some Punks and Apes took over the world, with some NFTs commanding 7-figure prices. The world was rife with birds, mutants, doodles and all varieties of digital art. Then, the crash happened. And it happened bigly. The promise of digital ownership had been betrayed and the value of everyone’s pixels came tumbling down. Ouch. But here we are in 2025, and something is stirring in the NFT world. Today we’ll examine the past, present and future of the NFT world. With a decade of experience at Yext, a company now approaching half a billion in ARR, Darryl Bond has seen it through negative EBITDA margins, executive turnover, and company-wide resets. In this episode, he sits down with CJ to talk about his approach to the finance function, which involves prioritizing growth over compensation, tackling the messy problems head-on, making the hard P&L calls in the “grey zones,” knowing when to ask for help, and staying focused through the tough times. Darryl shares how he scaled from controller to CFO, and how, in the process, he made sense of the chaos, led with transparency, and built a high-impact finance function that doesn't just report the numbers, but also drives the business. He explains the role of systems and processes in scaling operations, the mistakes he made early in his management journey, and why relationship-building has been the real unlock in his career. They dive into building deal desks, what operational excellence really means, and capital allocation decisions that actually start with listening to the customer.—LINKS:Darryl Bond on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darryl-bond-788b962a/Yext: https://www.yext.com/CJ on X (@cjgustafson222): https://x.com/cjgustafson222Mostly metrics: RELATED EPISODES:“Run Toward a Tough Market” — Developing the Hard and Soft Skills To Be a Great Finance Leader — —TIMESTAMPS:(00:00) Preview and Intro(02:49) Sponsor – RightRev | Navan | Rillet(06:54) The Reasons for Darryl's Career Loyalty(08:58) Prioritizing Learning Over Comp(11:09) What Yext and Its Finance Function Looked Like in 2015(15:40) Sponsor – Pulley | Brex | Aleph(20:03) Choosing Which Messy Problems To Take On(22:00) The Right Time To Create a Deal Desk(23:39) When To Bring General Counsel In-House(24:36) Asking for Help and Building a CFO Network(28:25) What Operational Excellence Looks Like in the Finance Team(31:11) Staying Focused Through Tough Times(35:39) Making the Hard P&L Calls In the “Gray Zone”(37:05) The Importance of Talking to Customers(38:30) A Guide to Communicating the Bad News(40:25) The Role of Systems and Automation in Gaining Control of the P&L(43:07) Capital Allocation Decisions: Yext's Two Recent Purchases(45:06) Build, Buy, or Partner(47:57) The Pros and Cons of Being a Sub-$1B Public Tech Company(49:38) How To Get (and Lose) Sell-Side Analyst Coverage(51:04) What Excites Darryl Most About Yext's Current Stage(53:13) Long-Ass Lightning Round: A Career Mistake(54:36) Advice to Younger Self(56:17) Finance Software Stack(57:42) Craziest Expense Story—SPONSORS:RightRev automates the revenue recognition process from end to end, gives you real-time insights, and ensures ASC 606 / IFRS 15 compliance—all while closing books faster. What's up, dudes? In memory of Ozzy, Duane Bailey from Tinsel Tunes and Matt Wheeler from Resurrection Metal Radio join me to talk 1988 Headbangers Christmas! Yes, it's Christmas Eve on MTV's Headbangers Ball, and Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde are hosting the festivities. We're introduced to a slew of ‘80s metal bands, but kicking off the festivities is Ozzy himself with “Crazy Babies!” Poison, Judas Priest, Winger, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and Guns N' Roses follow. Ozzy and Zakk have a great time introducing the videos. In fact, they even dress up in Santa hats. Ozzy even wears an odd mask and a pirate hook. Next up are videos from KISS, Hurricane, Alice Cooper, RATT, Aerosmith, and Cinderella. Ozzy suddenly appears in a picturesque Christmas fireside, but now inexplicably has on caveman feet and a club. Subsequently, videos from Lita Ford, Anthrax, Bad News (with the only Christmas song), Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden air. Finally, Hear N' Aid sang “Stars” and Headbangers Christmas concluded! Go get ‘em, boys!AC/DC singing “That's The Way I Wanna Rock 'N' Roll?” Yep. Yngwie Malmsteen performing “You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget?” Uh huh. Sam Kinison? Sam Kinison?!?! Only if he's wailing on “Wild Thing!” So grab your axe, turn it up to 11, and rock out to this headbanging episode!Tinsel TunesFB: @tinseltunesIG: @tinseltunespodcastTwitter: @TinselTunesPodTownshend LightsGive us a buzz! “Misinformation spreads like a virus,” explained Sander van der Linden, Ph.D., a Professor of Social Psychology in Society and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. He asked the question, “Is there a way to inoculate or immunize people?” His award-winning book Foolproof: Why Misinformation Infects Our Minds and How to Build Immunity explores this topic using decades of research and on-the-ground experience advising governments and tech companies. He wrote the book to devise a new paradigm to help readers understand and defend themselves against a worldwide information infodemic. Van der Linden's biography describes his body of research as looking at “how people process (mis)information, how it spreads in online networks, and how we can most effectively prebunk and inoculate people against false information.” He served on the World Health Organization's (WHO) infodemic working group. He has won numerous awards for his research on human judgment, communication, and decision-making, including the Rising Star Award from the Association for Psychological Science (APS). He co-developed Bad News, an award-winning fake news game designed to improve people's ability to spot manipulation techniques! This is an very important interview.
