Millions of Texans lost power during a winter storm in February. Hundreds may have died. And people wondered: “How could this happen in the energy capital of the U.S.?” To understand how we got the electric grid we have in Texas today, you have to understand the electric grid we had up until a little more than 20 years ago — and how a group of power companies, environmentalists, cities and state lawmakers hatched a plan to completely remake it. Did the experiment fail? Hosted by Mose Buchele and produced at KUT & KUTX Studios.

The Disconnect: Power, Politics, and the Texas Blackout podcast provides a deep dive into the events leading up to and during the February 2021 mass power outages in Texas. The podcast offers clear and concise reporting, explaining what happened with great detail. It highlights the decisions made by major players in the energy industry and the government, shedding light on how our state government failed its people during this crisis. The investigative journalism is commendable, providing crucial insights that our lawmakers have been unwilling or incapable of delivering.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to provide a comprehensive understanding of what really happened during the blackout. Through interviews, research, and analysis, it reveals shocking and telling moments that shed light on the failures within the system. The podcast also explores the history of Texas's energy grid, offering perspective and context for listeners. The storytelling is engaging and captivating, making it easy for listeners to follow along and grasp complex concepts.

While there are many strengths to this podcast, one criticism is that it could have delved further into certain aspects of the story. Some listeners expressed a desire for a full episode dedicated specifically to analyzing the actions (or lack thereof) of lawmakers and addressing accountability. While comments were made about their failures, some felt there was more to be explored in this area.

In conclusion, The Disconnect: Power, Politics, and the Texas Blackout podcast deserves high praise for its excellence in journalism and sound editing. It effectively explains what occurred during the mass power outages in Texas in an informative and emotionally compelling manner. This podcast is vital for anyone interested in understanding how this crisis unfolded and why accountability is essential moving forward. Kudos to Mose Buchele and the entire team for their outstanding work in revealing important information that every Texan should know.
